Lana's first album is heavily focused on this toxic relationship. The storytelling in Off to the Races is phenomenal as well. The sound and lyrics paint a messed up picture of the relationship. National anthem and ride I would consider separate storys...story's... amazing
Taylor Swift is actually inspired by Lana Del Rey, she’s talked about her a few times. She also accepted an award and talked about how Lana has influenced a whole generation despite the criticism she still stuck to her own style
@@DadoPanda What did Taylor get inspired by from Lana songwriting-wise? She just said she's inspired by her attitude and her different writing style. I don't really think they influenced each other.
The story is "Born to Die - Blue Jeans - Shades of Cool". In Shades of Cool her ghost haunts him when he's old. But National Anthem and Ride are not part of that story.
Born To Die is such a top tier in her discography. But for me so far Norman Fucking Rockwell is still her best album. I've been diving in her discography lately and currently in chemtrails era. I fear it's hard for her to top that album. Ultraviolence probably the most loved one in her fandom but, I personally think Honeymoon is another tier in her discography. It's very cinematic and also the sorrow one. Ps. Lust for life isn't bad at all like her stans always preach. It's very interesting record that I actually love it. Can't wait to hear Blue Banister.
Comparing Lana and Taylor has always been an issue between the two fandoms, both believe that their favorite is the best... in the end I think we have to enjoy these two great artists and that's it. But in the video when you mentioned that they were both amazing storytellers but that they were very opposites is the best way to describe them and to separate their jobs, Taylor has had a life in my opinion full of good decisions, where she has been protected by her parents and that is always good, she has surrounded herself with the right people, something very important not only in life but in Hollywood, I think she has an impeccable musical career and in her personal life she has also made good decisions and has been able to emerge victorious from the difficult moments that have been several, on the other hand Lana has had a tumultuous life, full of excesses, drugs, alcohol, bad behavior, love, sadness, friendships and also happiness, she has also been supported by her family but many of her love relationships they are with lowlife men, especially on this album, I think the best way to resume this part of Lana's life is by listening to "Off To The Races" this song you HAVE to listen to. Lana has evolved so much from Born To Die to her latest album Blue Banisters, her writing has always been super honest, touching on very uncomfortable topics and talking about her life in a diary way. Listening to Lana is a gift, it is an experience that will change your life and the way you listen to music. I understand that you want to watch the music videos that's super cool, but in my opinion the best songs with the most brutal lyrics don't have music videos, it would be great if you also react to some of her songs. I love your Lana reactions!! (sorry for my bad english 😋) ❤️✌️
this is truly a perfect description for lana and taylor’s musical style. they both perfectly doing a good job of describing their life through songwriting but in opposite spectrum. personally i relate more to lana although i still love taylor, she really know how it feels like to be constantly surrounded by darkness and persevere hard to not be affected by it.
The trilogy of songs as stated by Lana is Video Games, Blue Jeans and Born To Die as they talk about the same relationship - then, well, yes all her other songs keep the same kinda theme and style so it's preferably do a chronological order because you'll see her sound/songwriting evolve and change with every album and make more sense doing it that way - literally you'll follow her life, her growth( personal and musical growth) through what she share in every songs. Of course you can enjoy her songs in any way, but if you are interested in follow her story and understand her, going through the order of the albums is key, that's why everyone is suggesting it! Anyway loving your reaction!! can wait for the next 😽💖
I would usually beg people to react to my favorite artists but with lana it's totally useless cause she's so unique you'll end up listening to her whole career even with no requests. I'll keep suggesting albums! They're concept albums, very...compact stories. It all makes sense track by track. Have fun falling in love!
I think you got confused between some comments. Born to die, Blue jeans, Shades of cool (from Ultraviolence album) and west coast(kind of) are related. (Idk if it's official but you can clearly create a storyline from these MVs) National anthem and ride are totally different. Ride is very poetic and personal song to Lana. It's truly a masterpiece. About Blue Jeans song. Your interpretation is correct. In they bridge "then they took you away" By they I think she means addiction of drug or alcohol. Or even Bad guys who made her lover an addict or a bad guy. And Yes he k!lled her by drowning her. she couldn't escape. she's so in love. Hence "I will love you till the end of time" In shades of cool Music video, you will meet the older version of this Guy. Also we would loveee Album reactions!!!! Starting from born to die.
I do like the order that you're doing these in, but just so you know it doesn't really continue as one cohesive, singular narrative with the same characters in each throughout her music videos. I have a feeling that those who recommended you do these in order meant that the videos are best to react to in order because it shows her progression as an artist both sonically and thematically. Both of these songs are off of her first album Born To Die (as was Summertime Sadness and National Anthem) and you will definitely see common reoccurring themes in the lyrics of these songs. Ride is part of her Paradise EP that came after Born To Die, and I do think it is nice to get familiar with her first 'era', so to speak, before moving into the next, because each of her albums does have a unique sound and vibe. It's also nice to react in order because you can really see her maturing and her outlook on life changing and her lyrical focus shifting as you go through her albums.
You should also do Tropico after Ride. It’s a short film by Lana that has three songs from the Paradise album (Ride is also from Paradise). If you would do a song that doesn’t have a video, I recommend Off to the races while you are still in the Born to die era. Both of those are iconic.
You gotta do shades of cool next! The old man in the video is supposedly this same guy who aged and is haunted by lana's death in born to die, acc to fan theories!
Lana is inspired by a lot of 90-60s era of music while Taylor is inspired by Lana’s music! Love how Taylor is using Lana as a muse and I also see a lot of parallels from Lana’s past songs into Taylor’s newer music! So cool
Keep this guy in mind because there’s a future video, way down the road, where she is haunting an older version of him. (Shades of Cool, Ultraviolence album )
For me it's her best album. There are many great songs. I got to see her live back in 2013 and let me tell you... It was magical! Very fitting for an outdoor summer event, which it was.. Cola is amazing live.. so underated! She had a great band back then.. You should also listen to the demos of born to die. You can find them here on YT (demos full mixtape).
Love that people r finally reacting to her. Pure genius. If u want a darker genius artist. Melanie Martinez start from her first album. She has a video for every song and it's all in order, one long dark, creepy, beautiful story
yess i’m so happy being able to see someone new dive into lana’s discography,, so excited for you to get into ultraviolence (my personal fav album)☺️☺️
I’d recommend reacting to all the music videos of Born to die era, then do a full reaction album Then move on to the next eras music videos, Ride, and so on.
I’m the one who had suggested the order in your last Lana reaction. I did it more as a suggestion for the era. Wanted you to do a couple more “Born To Die” album era songs before jumping into the “Paradise” EP era with Ride. I would actually recommend doing a full album reaction of Born to Die after you finish watching the eras music videos! It may also be worth reacting to “Young and Beautiful” before Ride as it was released as a single for the Great Gatsby movie and isn’t associated with any of her albums.
I suggested Blue Jeans next because it ties into Born to Die, but I’ve always viewed Blue Jeans before BTD because thematically it makes more sense. You just happened to watch BTD first lol. Good catch on the comparison of their toxic relationship being akin to the alligators she swims with! The imagery of her being pulled under by him at the end is so haunting!
This song is probably about her gangster boyfriend, who was "chasing paper" - doing something illegal, maybe selling drugs, and he was "caught up in the game, that was the last I heard" He didn't come back, because he was caught. by the police. "Then they took you away, stole you out of my life" - he was probably put in prison. "I would wait a million years... promise you'll remember that you're mine, baby, can you see through the tears?" - she is probably telling this to him visiting him in prison, she tells him that she would wait for him. Lana also once said that: "I am usually always singing about the same god damn person, so I will love him forever." Don't know when exactly she said this, but it was probably in 2014, so after Born To Die, Paradise and Ultraviolence albums.
8:32 - the situation alludes to her bf doing something wrong, possibly drug dealing to get more money. He didn’t come back because “they” possible the police or some other bad guy prevented him from returning to her
This song is really good!!! Specially the bridge part where she sounds like she is abt to cry Also u should do 'video games' before 'national anthem' since video games came first and was her break through song and after video games we got born to die and the other songs Thanks for the reaction btw
I'm enjoying Lana Del Rey reaction, I would suggest you to react to the whole album, and then react to each video in order. You'll be amazed of her artistry.
Don't forget to do Tropico after Ride. It is almost 30 minutes but contains 3 songs from Paradise. It's amazing! But then again, everything she does is amazing!!!
shades of cool is the follow up cuz it’s him already old, seeing her ghost when she used to be alive and young, and her haunting him telling him she’s the only one for him in this whole entire world basically.
The real order is born to die and blue jeans ( where she is killed by him) and then west coast/shades of cool ( where she’s haunting him as he’s getting older. National anthem and ride are yes from the same era of born to die , shades of cool / west coast from another one but if u’re looking for a STORY it’s the order i gave, national anthem and ride music video don’t have any connection with the born to die and blue jeans music video but yes came from the same album xx
A few of Lana’s musical inspirations were Eminem,Frank Sinatra, Nirvana, Sublime, Chris Isaac, David Lynch. I hear some Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, Fiona Apple especially in certain cadences in her voice, but like she has said you wouldn’t necessarily compare her to any of them. She definitely crafted her own style and sound immaculately well!
Blue jeans White shirt Walked into the room You know you made my eyes burn It was like James Dean For sure You're so fresh to death and sick as c-cancer You were sorta Punk Rock I grew up on Hip Hop But you fit me better Than my favorite sweater and I know That love is mean (uh oh) And love hurts (uh oh) But I still remember that day we met in December, oh baby I will love you 'til the end of time I would wait a million years Promise you'll remember that you're mine Baby, can you see through the tears? Love you more Than those bitches before Say you'll remember (oh baby) Say you'll remember, oh baby, ooh I will love you 'til the end of time Big dreams Gangster Said you had to leave to start your life over I was like, "No please, stay here" We don't need no money We can make it all work But he headed out on Sunday Said he'd come home Monday I stayed up waitin', anticipatin' and pacin' But he was Chasin' (uh oh) Paper (uh oh) Caught up in the game It was the last I heard I will love you 'til the end of time I would wait a million years Promise you'll remember that you're mine Baby, can you see through the tears? Love you more Than those bitches before Say you'll remember (oh baby) Say you'll remember, oh baby, ooh I will love you 'til the end of time You went out every night And, baby, that's alright I told you that no matter what you did I'd be by your side 'Cause I'ma ride or die Whether you fail or fly Well, shit, at least you tried But when you walked out that door A piece of me died Told you I wanted more That's not what I had in mind I just want it like before We were dancin' all night Then they took you away Stole you out of my life You just need to remember I will love you 'til the end of time I would wait a million years Promise you'll remember that you're mine Baby, can you see through the tears? Love you more Than those bitches before Say you'll remember (oh baby) Say you'll remember, oh baby, ooh I will love you 'til the end of time
i think that the part where Lana sings They stole you out of my life is about her first boyfriend, which her parents(mostly her mother) didnt allow. she got a drinking problem because of that at an early age. she was around 14 years old. So her parents send her to boarding school. thats also why she hates her mother and has mommy issues, she shows that in the type of men she dates.
After Ride pls do a short film by her called TRÓPICO, includes 3 songs from the paradise edition of Born To Die. I’ll love it 😍 Before to go to ultraviolence era 😬
There's a lot similaries in the lyrics between Lana and Taylor but I think you should see it as Taylor being inspired by Lana in her way to solidy as a mature songwritter
Lana was sent to boarding school at the age of 15 and has problems with drugs and a pretty dark past, shes gone through a lot, shes an old soul tho Sorry for my english
The alligators representing how toxic the relationship is on both sides is genius. Alligators hunt at the surface edges of large bodies of water (for anybody who doesnt live in the South, ALWAYS assume there is an alligator in any body of water you cannot see to the bottom of) and it is actually safer to be swimming/submerged in the water than to linger on the edge outside of the body of water. Seeing only Lana's reflection at the beginning, her warvhim get in, and watching him surface the same way an alligator does and then mirroring that same predatory behavior shows she's become just as toxic as he has and is no longer just "prey". Alligators are also known to cannibalize smaller alligators. Lana and her love interest circle one another and later on, he's holding her limp body. It seems to symbolize that they were both attacking each other and only one of them was going to survive it in the end. I feel like I went way too into this....😬
well taylore mention that lana is one of her inspirations . soo i think lana then taylor. personally i prefer lana all the way, event though i like taylor alots as well. when i was a teenage girl i like taylor but now as grown woman i am in love with lana, her song speak to my heart more
I actually you kinda missed the way you pictured Taylor. She built her image in her music as the girl that everybody's ignore. She was that quarky, goofy, and genius at the same time. The type that people known as uncool. But you also right cause her brand are that innocent, fairy-tale, hopeless romantic, good girl gone wild, fucked up a little bit, then fall and learn from it to be mature which is very relatable. While Lana lived in the toxic fuck-up society which is I found very interesting. For me Lana see everything through the very brutal landscape than Taylor. Anyway I'm still new in Lana's music (currently in chemtrails era)
Hellow fellow Swift. Soon to be a TayLana fan (i hope?) Yes I agree with you. Lana has dealt with a rough teens. She was alcoholic at young age (not longer) but yeah she has had many "Bad toxic boyfriend" so her music is relatively "dark". Critics were toring her down for dark lyrics. Which Taylor also taked about in woman of the decade speech. Also If you're in chemtrails era. I think it's great to start her discography from start to end because you will see how her music has changed and she has matured.
@@hrctdelrey9540 yes I'm already a taylana fan. I knew her name and her brand probably couple years ago. I already amazed her style by how her fans described her art. But I never really try to go deep in her discoghraphy untill recenrly. Yup I start from BTD (atcually I already heard this record back then and i love it) but I kinda set that album as a standard. So when I heard UV for the first time, I don't like that album at all. I didn't see it what her fans saw in that record. Honeymoon put me back in her shoe and then I was amaze when i listened LFL. But NFR instanly become my fav by my first listen. Now i'm at chamtrails and white dress is definetly her best one. But i'm not so sure about that whole album and I'm still looking for it. I said I don't like UV right, but these days that record grew so much in me. I love almost every songs in it. Well btw I'm a writer myself, one of the ghost one. I really love taylor writing skills but it's kind of hard for me to match her energy sometimes. Lana now opened my eyes. I think my writing skill suit her the most than taylor. But obviously queen lana still superior than everyone. Through her art I learn to see something in a very different pov that i used to. It's funny when suffi explained their styles, I immediately picture what if they both were in the same school and have a crush with the same person. Imagine how different they would write that story about.
@@afiefswift5403 about her albums: i am a big fan but some albums i didn't like at first but them after some time i rediscover them and fall in love. I'm always like 'why didn't I like them before?' but my preferences just change over the years depending on my life experiences and mood. And if you keep asking me what is my favorite album of hers, my answer will be different every time.
@@justlily3971 oh it's like when I love taylor for the first time. But in her case I watch her artistically grow and now the re-record enhanced her older albums for me. Well with Lana tbh, UV is the most challenging one for me. Now that album grow a lot and somehow so far COTCC feel like a major let down from NFR. It's hard to keep the whole album together even tough some songs in it already won my heart.
