Hearing Linus talking about Hard R reminded me of how when I was a kid, Hard R was used when referring to a movie rating. If a movie was R rated, and REALLY deserved its R rating due to excessive themes such as nudity, language, or gore, people would say the movie was a hard R.
I think that's still a thing. I think I last heard it when Deadpool released (though here in Canada, it was rated 14A, which is the equivalent of the American PG-13 rating, instead of 18A, which is our R equivalent)
I woke up to my earbud having died at the point they were talking about people auto playing into the middle of a WAN show and I thought the simulation was cracking.
Linus: “Eat a raw Cockatiel in front of your birds?” Luke: “They would be pretty upset.” Linus: “He was ripped out of his skull and didn’t recognize it was a live bat” Dan: “We’ve all been there” This is why the WAN show is my favorite podcast
I personally can't stand auto-play on RU-vid, so falling asleep and then waking up to something like the WAN Show playing is never an issue for me. Lol
@shall_we_kindly have u never fallen asleep in school before? Lol Background conversation is a great thing to focus on to fall asleep, especially if ur own thoughts are less than appealing.
@@verakoo6187 I don't know about them, but I never fell asleep in school. I've also never fallen asleep while watching a movie (especially in a theatre) or RU-vid. That's what I thought at first too when I saw the $8000 bid, I then read the description for the listing...1.7MW lmao that is the ENTIRE electric service capacity for 50-70 homes
Fashionably behind once again this week, but I am a former OTR truck driver. Most new trucks come with what is called an APU, auxiliary power unit, run off a small diesel engine with typically a 1500 to 2000W inverter built into the system. The reason you are unlikely to see a high-end gaming computer typically is the incredible amount of vibration and physical movement in a semi truck. I actually knocked multiple Xbox 360s out of laser alignment with nothing more than standard driving.
24:05 yeah, the everyday Russian term for both P2W and giving money to streamers/content makers etc is донат (donàt) which obviously originates from "donation". That's probably why he calls it that. Also, BTR is not just a truck. It's an APC with a mounted machine gun.
@@thejeffofjeffsYeah it's really not all that pedantic in this context. Calling in an armored car would be dumb but nbd. Calling in an armored car with a 30mm autocannon on it is a problem.
Just to clarify. The cheyenne supercomputer was the 20th most powerful when it was built, but right now you can match the power of it with under 50 4090s. 28 rack units can be shrunk to 2 or 3.
Multiply that number by at least 64 because 4090s cut off double precision calculations (FP64) to virtually nothing. The Cheyenne supercomputer was over 5,000 FP64 TFLOPS, and over 10,000 FP32 TFLOPS.
@@NUCLEARARMAMENT 5 petaflops of FP64? you'd still need more than 500 A100's to get there. Honestly pretty impressive for a CPU based system from 2017.
@@harmvzon The A100 manages to achieve 12.5 FP64 TFLOPS in LINPACK thanks to sparsity support being supported, out of a maximum theoretical 20 FP64 TFLOPS (so, around 5/8ths or 62.5% RPeak efficiency). That translates into around 400 or more A100s assuming linear scaling across the interconnect fabric. Sadly, I have no numbers for the H100 or the upcoming B100 GPUs, but expect at least 1.5-2 times for H100 and 3-4 times for B100 in LINPACK for FP64 calculations.
non-premium spotify users have extra ads, as far as I understand it when you hear an add it is baked in the midea file and spotify might not know. In some instances, with poor connection, my Spotify has bugged and given me extra ads in my local language during an english podcast. Did the Cheyenne supercomputer come with the gate dialing program? 1:11:00 was amazing! Just the whole thing. This is the only channel I have watched pre bullying in 2011-2012. Whenever I begin to think or do personally destructive(mentally) things, you two pull me out of it. I went way to deep, but after these years I just got the realisation and had to throw it out there!
regarding CPU supercomputers, I'm currently learning weather modelling and climate modelling, and most of the weather and climate models that we are learning about are designed to run on CPU supercomputers. For example the Weather Research and Forecasting model, WRF, has no ability to be run on GPUs - but runtimes scale linearly with # of cpu cores point is, not literally everything run on super computers is designed to run on GPU SMs
Commenting to highlight a problem with the podcast distribution. For some reason its not being added to the podcast on RU-vid music. This is the primary way I listen to it in my car since it syncs progress between the video and the audio version. Not sure why but the last one to upload there was april 20. Its a little frustrating, and I'm guessing it's RU-vid's fault since it has been uploading to other podcast apps.
Hijacking this comment to mention that Spotify premium still gets ads. Not sure if specifically on wan show, but podcasts in general consistently get ads.
Spotify premium is so overrated I switched to RU-vid premium and genuinely I get so much more use out of it best subscription service I have you get some sick features when I travel it’s so nice to download a bunch of RU-vid videos for the flight
I love finding out there's a solution to a problem I have, only to simultaneously find out its broken. Still, cool to hear that the two versions sync if they ever fix it.
@@EricLicciardello good thing is that the feature works, it's just a distribution issue with the podcast version onto RU-vid music. This happened a month or so ago and eventually they got added.

As a dev, when asked for timelines, I learned to take whatever I think it should take at first blush, then triple it. If I'm unsure, then I first add 2 of whatever units the initial estimate in, then triple it. Finally, I round up to the largest unit (so if the estimate ends up e.g. 6 days, I round up to 2 weeks). Usually I end up overestimating, but you'd be surprised by how little, and I find it's generally better to deliver early than deliver late.
This rule applies to almost all projects, whether software, hardware, civil, mechanical, etc. First double the number. Then increase the time unit by one notch. 2 hours becomes 4 days. 3 weeks becomes 6 months. 2 months becomes 4 years. Yes, it is astonishingly accurate. All part of the human ability to vastly underestimate just how complex and difficult something is going to be.
I would advise that unless access to social media is part of their job (i.e. managing and posting to LMG accounts) then access should be blocked. I can't recall the last corporate job I had that actually allowed access to anything like Twiter, Facebook, etc and some block sites such as Reddit and RU-vid.
3:04:59 I actually built a mini ITX rig in a Corsair obsidian 250D, and I used a TV tray in the middle of my cab and sat on the edge of the bed, and used a full-on gaming desktop in my truck. I had a diesel power generator that provided up to 2000 watts to the inverter.
I can't say that I agree with Linus's take on pause ads moving the UI around. This was specifically about RU-vid on TVs, where you are using neither a touchscreen nor a mouse to navigate. It is directional arrows and media buttons on the remote that will control the app. Having the UI shift is in no way a problem here. Of course, this is not the case for phones or computers, but I find it to be a decent way to show ads on a TV. Not to mention that this format has been used a lot for live TV, such as sports games.
@@zerker08 Right now you are needlessly combative. Ads are a reality on youtube and they're not going away. I never said I liked ads, as I actually really dislike them and have gone on to block them from my life as much as possible, although the tracking aspect is by far my biggest issue with them. I just did not consider this particular complaint (UI moving) to be legitimate in this context.
22:10 - You're basically describing skill-based matchmaking. I'm personally all for it, but people enjoy stomping on the casual players and having a 5000:1 kill/death ratio, so they get angry any time SBMM is mentioned, because it means that they can't do that anymore. I find it boring when games always end with one team having a significantly higher score than the other. SBMM (ideally) prevents that, and (again, ideally) makes it so that most games end with a relatively even score, along with keeping players' K/D ratios close to 1.0
You're missing the point for a lot of above average players here though, it's not "enjoy stomping on the casual players" it's "playing every casual match like it's the finals in a massive tournament is not enjoyable at all" and it also ruins playing with people of different skill levels
@@taj1994 Personally, while extremely one-sided matches aren't that enjoyable either, I much prefer having matches that don't all feel the same. There's basically no variety when you constantly get lobbies where everyone uses the meta stuff. Should SBMM exist, yes, but it should not be anywhere near strict in casual modes. What's the point of ranked modes if casual is exactly the same just without a visible rank? And all that is excluding the manipulative matchmaking systems used by some games that basically decide that you're supposed to win or lose the match before you've even started.
@@Viirax "What's the point of ranked modes if casual is exactly the same just without a visible rank?" Most of the games I've played that use SBMM _don't_ have a ranked mode Admittedly, it's mainly Call of Duty though, since I'm not really into PvP in general, but do enjoy CoD (especially Infinity Ward's games. I also don't know if MWIII has a ranked option, since I haven't played it yet) The only major exception I can think of is Halo Infinite, but honestly though, as much as I love the campaigns, I could never get into Halo's multiplayer (outside of custom games with friends), so I just don't play that one very often I'm more of a modded Minecraft/co-op Souls/cruise around in Forza/explore the galaxy in Elite: Dangerous gamer most of the time though
My problem with SBMM is that most games that have it can’t seem to actually match me with players of similar skill. I’ll have five matches in a row where I’m untouchable and destroying everyone, then I’ll have five matches where I can barely leave the spawn without getting put in the dirt, then repeat ad nauseam. I much prefer lobbies. If I feel the skill average is too high or low for me, I can just go to another lobby.
The concept of SBMM definitely has its place in gaming, but current implementations are dog shit at recognizing skill level. Plus.... Players on the higher skill level face matchmaking queues that take forever because there's not enough players in their level to start a match. Those same players then get on their Smurf account, or intentionally do bad to lose rating as soon as timers become inconvenient. Smurfing ruins the game experience for any new players looking to get a feel for the game before climbing to more challenging games. Intentionally losing rating just ruins the day for everyone. It's not fun to win or lose because of someone intent on sucking. And like any other gaming mechanic I don't want to see it crammed somewhere it doesn't fit just because it can be. Make it work within the context of the game/game-mode.
I absolutely fall asleep to the wan show - set to the playlist, and thanks to insomnia wake up intermittently maybe 2 hours, 3 hours later. It's good to have fairly in depth technical chatter to distract the inner dialogue, which helps me fall back asleep. Unless Luke is laughing, which has woke me up before. As a little kid I fell asleep with Johnny Carson, now it's you guys.
Wait Tarkov is the successor of contract wars? This all makes sense now, the amazing gameplay attention to detail highly accurate firearm rendition and almost fair monetisation of a free game. I played contract wars a little bit, kedr was the best starter gun lol
The Helldivers situation is kinda screwy. To my knowledge as a person from Estonia, Sony kinda overlooks the country requirement for us, but they could technically still chop heads if need be. These days people create a Finnish account since it's geographically close. I myself have a UK account because when I made mine in PSP era, not even Finland was a thing. Granted I haven't really bought a game digitally since I own a vita and prefer cartridgesz so I would not even lose much. Still is scummy though.
2:06:22 I don't know if it's in the legislation, but I would imagine that the temp passwords and first-time setup passwords would still be allowed to be things like admin:admin, so long as that password needs to be reset after the first use or after an hour/day/week of use (depending on what kind of software).
The problem with using a burner account to register for Twitter or whatever is that companies have cross platform, cross account and offline tracking software. They can link accounts that happen to have been on the same network at some point and stuff like that.
LOL. I never clicked on one of these podcast, it just always starts playing after I have finished something else and then I just keep it on because cou guys are chill.
2:10:00. Digital headphones. I can remember the companies selling "Plug into the headphone socket, wired" headphones as digital. Everything was advertised as digital and/or turboed.
"Don't buy it, grow a back bone." I hear you, but that in no way helps the people who were legit just lied to and scammed out of their money. "Don't buy it" helps break shitty consumer relationships, it doesn't solve the issue for a customer who was perfectly satisfied with a transaction they made, but then later had the rug pulled out from under them. Like there's a MASSIVE difference between bitching about horse armor and how the state of gaming is in the toilet because of it and then buying that same horse armor 10 minutes later, and buying the armor and being ENTIRELY satisfied with the purchase then having the armor somehow remotely removed 3 months later. You can be held responsible for making shitty buying decisions, but I don't think ANYONE should be held responsible for someone else legitimately just scamming and lying, not buying doesn't solve this unless you just chose to NEVER purchase a video game ever, just to avoid the possibility that they don't somehow, intentionally brick the game for everyone with an update just to fuck with people. Not buying in no way shape or form dissuades someone attempting a rug pull unless you expect nobody to ever purchase anything under any circumstance.
Your talking about the helldivers thing? A PSN Account has been a requirement from the start. It's a scummy thing to do, and everyone in countries where you can't make a PSN account should be refunded, or they should have a region specific patch (even if PSN players can't play with non PSN players) but otherwise don't buy it if you don't want to make a PSN account.
@@christianmino3753 Nobody brought up Helldivers, nobody is talking about it. I'm talking about the game that said "Here is a 150$ bundle that gives you access to all proceeding dlc" and then effectively decided they wanted to charge 250$ for a premium dlc instead because they like money. That is a rug pull, you buy something expecting "x", but what is delivered is not "x".
@@christianmino3753I'm talking about Tarkov, the game that charged 150$ for a version with all future dlc and decided later to charge 250$ for a new super premium special gold e-peen edition dlc. If you buy a version with access to future DLC and they don't uphold that promise the rug has been pulled, you have been scammed and there is no way not buying it would have helped anyone unless you had future vision.
My issue with the RU-vid pause ads is will they have sound? Like watching videos and you are pausing because someone is talking to you or asking a question or whatever and you can't hear what they are saying. Pausing with an ad that has sound in that scenario will now require not only pausing the video but then also muting the sound.
Only time I've ever commented but I legit fall asleep and wake up and somehow the WAN show is playing lol. I'm glad it played because it's now one of the few podcasts I listen to.
As a Foxhole player with 1000 hours in game.... someone making fun of "taking out 28 rounds and put in one with 30 and they magically teleport..." makes me laugh.
Except in tarkov you have almost every calibre available. You can load .366 into a 7.62 mag and then shit yourself when the gun doesnt cycle rounds. You can mix ammo types within one mag, so you can have FMJ and AP rounds as you maybe would in a warzone irl, based on what you have available. I really like the idea of Foxhole, but Linus and Luke didn't really go in depth as to what makes Tarkov so unique and realistic. Those are the same reasons it dominates its genre and why they have a monopoly on extraction shooters. Its been said for a while, that the only Tarkov-killer will be Tarkov. As we can see, the prophecy holds up.
Even Battlefield 1942 didn't have the magical ammunition balancing in clips/magazines. In BF1942 if you reloaded, you lost all ammunition remaining in the weapon. That has its own oddities, but I really think more games should have kept that.
@@notrobert8284 No new project can dethrone it right away, but Tarkov is getting closer and closer to its expiration date thanks to how poorly built its barebones features are and how all its systems rely on that mess. Can't fix the bad foundation without breaking everything else. The amount of work involved to resolve that is absurdly unrealistic even if you're an optimist. The relationship of map loading, loot generation and syncing the server/players won't get significantly better(scav queues are the quickest in good conditions but still take 50s+ at the minimum, no matter how good your specs are) Each match relying on offloading AI behavior to the server that doesn't always keep up. Overload scenarios can cause stutters/slowdowns/bugs that are almost impossible to replicate. Game performance can drop by half from something small, seemingly unrelated. Could be a small patch, could be a special event, could be server related, could be RAM mismanagement and the impact can vary from match to match greatly. There's so many other things I don't see them solving that are growing pains for years now, and unfortunately for them, technological advancements won't cushion those drawbacks either.
Regarding Luke's comments about Google sheets, I can confirm there are some personal projects that we opted to use Google sheets for instead of Office 365 due to the remote accessibility, better integration with forms, even with the technical challenges we had to overcome

I used to watch F1, and yeah, it was pretty boring after the first 2-5 laps, unless someone crashed or went off course. Most of the overtaking happens because of pit stop strategy during the bulk of the race. Sometimes youll get licky and some cars in the mid pack will be exciting for a couple laps, but typically whoever is in front will stay in front.
I have the same game strats as Yvonne and I know they're shameful but hearing you commend them so valliantly has given me one of the biggest honors of my life
It’s funny you mentioned that because I fall asleep watching anything LTT related every night and it always is somehow playing a WAN show when I wake up
As a person who played games and studied games design in Uni...I can honestly say that the consumers are 50% of the issue with the gaming industry. Micro transactions, pre-orders and play to win models and the gamers brought in, hook, line and sinker. These days, Ive found touching grass and exercising far more rewarding and far less frustrating then trying to enjoy games and the people that play them.
I legit listen to WAN show when I sleep here in the UK, I manage most the show I'm interested in but wake to find another 2 have played through as well 😅
