In his new film, director Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished - a radical narration about race in America, using the writer's original words. He draws upon James Baldwin's notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America.
"One of the best movies you are likely to see this year."

G N The problem is, that whole “Pull yourself up by the bootstraps” line is old and played. There plenty of historical facts that black communities has built their own, only for the black communities to be destroyed by white people and government. Let’s start with the Emancipation Proclamation. Abe Lincoln gave black people their 50 acres and a mule, only after Lincoln was assassinated, did Andrew Johnson sign an order called “Military Reconstruction” in which all the land that black slaves built on to create black communities was taken from them and given back to the slave owners who lost their slaves. Payments in forms of reparations was also given to those slave owners for their economic hardships after losing their slaves. 2. Rosewood and Tulsa Oklahoma were black thriving communities until white people and the government came into those communities, starting riots, looting and burning those communities to the ground, then laws were passed to insure that black communities like those would never be built again. 3. Then there’s the “Federal Housing Association of 1934” that issuers that white people would receive loans for housing and black people would not. This ushered in what is known as “Red-Lining”. It still exist today. Not to mention that I had skipped passed Jim Crow and Segregation. So please stop with your ignorance. Black people continue to pull ourselves up despite what we already know what we’re face with out here globally. And if there’s a poor white person in America, somewhere down the line, they fucked up on their own, laws wasn’t created to disenfranchise them like it was for black people. Mind you, Lebron James made it out the hood only to end up in Hollywood where the “N” word was spray painted on the gates of his home. So you see, it doesn’t matter if black people do make it in life, racists systemic structures/laws still exist and fuels this country.

I think the best way history should be taught should be the most uncomfortable parts of history
@StrategicWealthLLC
@StrategicWealthLLC 4 года назад
K S - Why only the uncomfortable parts? As parents, we know it is bad to constantly criticize our children. In business, we know we cannot always criticize our employees. We have to both critique when things are wrong and motivate with a positive view of what is and what will be. On a much more subtle but direct point, there are several social scientists who observe that Africans (with black skin) immigrating to America do quite well. Better than white Americans, in fact. When postulating why they do so well, especially relative to native born black Americans, the answer relates back to the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. Think about what that means. That highly suggests that native born black Americans children have created for themselves a mental prison... because they have been raised to feel they live in a deeply racist country in which they can never succeed. Immigrant children from Africa, not having been raised in that social and cultural milieu, have no such mental chains, find themselves successful in America. res.mdpi.com/d_attachment/socsci/socsci-07-00024/article_deploy/socsci-07-00024.pdf

The chilling point is that Americans, white Americans, must figure out, and figure soon! (para) "why was a n'g invented, and still NEEDED, in the first place!" But the delusion of race operates as an insidious narcotic within the white psyche, deflected and dismissed when it's raised, without any meaningful attempt to contemplate the consequence of its existence, the consequence to the future, the consequence of what was, and presently, being lost.

@holio Assuming facts not in evidence. This may come as a shock to you, but 1) James Baldwin was not a Stalinist and 2) thinking James Baldwin was an incredible human being and infinitely wise does not mean that you hate white people. Baldwin did not hate white people. Ibram X. Kendi, in How To Be an Antiracist (2019), very explicitly says that hatred of white people is indeed a form of racism, despite the fact that some liberal types say that isn't the case (Kendi is right, of course). That you think of a statement praising Baldwin as anti-white says a lot, in fact, about *you*. It sounds like you need to take Baldwin's advice at the end about "find[ing] out why."

Last school year my English teacher dedicated majority of the semester to discuss racial, gender, immigration, and poverty issues. We watched this movie in class and read a bunch of James Baldwin’s writings. It was a wonderful experience. I loved it even more because my teacher was a white male. I never had a white teacher before who openly talk about these issues. When we started these topics he straight up said as a white straight man he could never fully understand what it is like to be anything but that but he he will try his best to discuss the subjects(mainly by having us as a class lead the discussion and him saying as a moderator/guide). I believe all schools should undergo a deep dive like we did. Before that all of history or English would talk about slavery and Jim Crow, and would very briefly talk about the major racial problems still present today. I had to teach myself about ongoing racial themes. Not every child is willing to go that extra mile. It is so important school’s teaching about ongoing racial issues or those children(the future voters and leaders of our nation/world) will live a in a blissful ignorance which could have been torn down as a youth

I fully expect some people to come on at some point and say, these movements that have been happening around the country and worldwide, the open response from so many at all levels that you see, might make you see that you are closer and open to acceptance of black people than you were before. And they'll say, if that's what it takes, then you're not, at all. Except, for some people, that is exactly what it takes. I'm glad about what's happening in the country and around the world, and the changes that are taking place - the statues being torn down, the flags no longer at NASCAR. The many demonstrations make it easier for me. Keep the movement going. Because hesitance in yourself breeds hesitance in others, especially hesitance demonstrated at the highest levels. The people at the highest levels say I am hesitant because my people are hesitant - well, worldwide, people are showing they are not. And it is good to see.

We still have wonderfully profound, insightful and eloquent people speaking on these subjects! Baldwin and other past heros just sound more eloquent because as well as their insights of great depth and human understanding, during a time where activism carried the weight of higher stakes, they have the old fashioned way of speaking which sounds fancy against today's vernacular! 🤭 We (21st century) have bell hooks, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Akala Reni-Eddo Lodge and, until last year, Toni Morrison, among a great many others to celebrate!

The pessimistic part of black culture reinforces using the N word with each still till this day. The glorifying of crime, hood life, cops getting killed, and no real family values from the thing that is called their music, is not created or given to the streets by whites. The hood life is in fact perpetuated enough in today's black culture. Their movies and music are just as detrimental and until that also changes there will remain hate and bigotry. Just compare the lyrics from patriotic country music to rap and hip hop. Do you hear the contrast? Cops that were at least born in the 80s, lived through NWA and ICE T. That music resonates and has a residual effect just as bad a racism does, consciously and subconsciously. There's a movie called White men can't Jump. How about making a movie called: Black people can't swim. Call out the double standards.

One of the reasons James Baldwin is probably not read in schools is because he writes on such a high intellectual level that most students today won't be able to read his works. Try reading Just Above My Head and write a book report on that. I read it and I know that most students today cannot concentrate long enough to get through the first chapter. Brilliant writers like Baldwin didn't even have to go to college. The book, Caste, by Isabel Wilkerson reminds me of the type of intellectual rigor of James Baldwin. The movie Caste is a masterpiece too!

I wasn’t racist, I was selfish. And if I’m not walking with him I find myself facing my selfishness. I don’t think anyone is racist. I believe people are selfish, and the shallowest of excuses is skin deep. Blood that coarse just bellow the surface is where the truth lies. 1 John 4:10 This is real love-not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Understand that so that we can all serve each other. The true master is a master servant. Love one another. Submit to the Servant Master, the Master Servant, the Way, the Truth, the Life.
