i loved the bill and frank episode i think it's much better than in the game, and i love the game a lot! the only thing i think is off is the intro of the first episode bc like you said it doesn't feel like a great hook but since it has been doing so well i don't really mind. i hope it continues being this good
I came in with low expectations because the story was told so well in the game, from the acting to the pacing to the emotions. I would have figured they'd be better off trying to tell a different story set in the same universe than try to recapture what the game was. I was so surprised by the third episode where it became clear that they were both telling a different story and recapturing the game's plot. It almost feels like a magic trick.
It really is phenomenal. Heck in behind the scene meterial with interviews you see the writter for the games constantly praising the shows writter and been like "Wish I had thought of that for the game" with some of the stuff that happens. Its a great blend of the two
So true. This project was stuck in production hell for the longest time that there was no way it was gonna be any good. It is a literal fucking miracle how good this show is.
You know what hooked me in the first episode? It’s such a tiny, inconsequential detail, but for me at least it showed such attention to detail. During the scene where they’re trying to escape (which, btw, is the most tense I’ve been watching anything for some time), when they come to the queue on the highway and Tommy goes off-road, you actually see other people pull out behind them and start cutting across the field too. At least one of them is a pick-up that looks like it was hanging a little way back from the queue, as if they were considering it and then seeing someone else go off road decided it for them. Which is such a human thing, like I’m sure most of us will have been stuck in traffic and when one person decides to do a u-turn or take a side road a dozen people follow them. But so often in films/shows you see everyone but the main characters responding to things like, well, NPCs. As I said, it’s an inconsequential little thing, but it really tickled me.
My favorite moment of respecting the audience was when Frank asked Bill, "Where did you get that?" About the scanners. It was pitch perfect. It acknowledged Bill's utility and skill without making unnecessary exposition about it. Bill doesn't answer, we know Bill is a survival badass and could find anything given four years.
I believe that one more reason that could explain the rise of (good) videogame adaptations recently is also the fact that a generation of younger filmmakers are starting to get into the industry as well. Younger people have grown up playing videogames, we understand the medium extremely well, both its strengths and its limitations, and that allows those of us who decide to to get into the film industry to have a better respect for the source material and to appreciate the way in which it should be done
I think also because of the kind of video games that were available to us. Games existed for previous generations but they didn't have the kind of rich in-depth storytelling that more modern games did. There's a world of difference between games of the 80s-early 90s like Sonic, Mario and Pong compared to those of the late 90s and 00s like Half-life, Skyrim and the Last of Us.
TBH it can't just be "younger people getting into film making" cus we've had video games since the 80s don't forget. And those games still had fantastic story telling (hello FF4?)

And, to my knowledge, a FF4 adaptation hasn't ever been even attempted, so I guess your example is irrelevant here. Plus, the fact that there were good games in the 80s still doesn't change the fact that the first videogame adaptation was the Super Mario Bros movie from 1993. This means that a child who grew up playing videogames in the 80s, would have been at most 13 years old by the time that movie came out, so they had no way of influencing that production. That movie was so horrible exactly because it was made by people who just saw a popular videogame and tried to get some easy cash from it, but they didn't have such an emotional attachment to the game as those children did. And by now those children are, at most, 43 years old, which, to me, means that some of them have had time to grow up, become experienced filmmakers and are now starting to take over the industry from the old guard. So my argument still stands, reinforced by your comment.
I love that the show uses my knowledge of the game against me. I was waiting with bated breath for when Bill and Frank’s love story would turn ugly, because that’s what happens in the game, but instead we got one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve ever seen. I didn’t expect to cry as much as I did.
I feel this exactly! I was waiting like you, with baited breath, waiting for Joel's fall at the research lab, so when they revealed he had been stabbed, it completely took me by surprise! I was really impressed with that, especially since it makes the incident seem more survivable. (Though I still wish we coulda seen the giraffe lol)

One thing I loved about the game is the change in the deal with Marlene. Joel is seeking a vehicle to go out west to see his brother and needs a battery, Marlene has promised a vehicle. In the game it was about getting some guns that were taken from them and that’s it. It was fine in the game but it made it more impactful and gave Joel a better motive to continue escorting Ellie beyond Tess asking as her dying wish
It’s funny because you never even considered Joel’s motive aside from ‘we need our shit’ which b lines into his obligation to Tess, but givin Joel personal motivation just helps buy into this idea it’s not just Ellie, infact right now she’s the side quest where the game is this is the main quest, and obviously Ellie will become that but what a good way to add on and elevate
I really just hope they take this energy and change last of us 2’s story a bit. Putting aside the game had one of the most divided fan bases. It just would be weird since LOU2 was literally almost a full action game. Seeing Bella Ramsey kill 15,000 of Abby’s freinds would be weird in the TV show.
Late to the party but wanted to pitch in! I've been thinking about this change and I do think it works very well - but here's my reasoning why the game version also has a lot of merit: First, it's not a super coincidence that Joel just so happens to be trying to go away exactly when Marlene needs him to - this is whatever but I like that Joel is just minding his own business when he gets "stuck" with Elie. What this also does is tell us exactly how much Tess means to him, since he's "willing" to risk so much for Ellie just for being Tess' wish. Of course in the show we get other scenes exploring their relationship so that's fine, I've just been wondering why I liked both iterations so much
I have never actually played The Last of Us game. I've had friends who have played it and I've seen plenty of clips but I've never actually played it myself. However I do have a genuine phobia of the fungus that's used in the game. The fact that only a couple of genes are protecting us from becoming zombies if we walk through the wrong section of forest is legitimately terrifying to me. I appreciated that prologue with the scientists because for me horror feels a lot more close to home when it's grounded or at least inspired by reality.
not even just genes. our high internal temperatures. higher than insects. The show actually suggests that global warming could mutate the fungus into surviving warmer and warmer temperatures and eventually us.
I’ve been so excited that I can finally share this story with my parents. I basically described the whole game to them back when I was playing it for the first time but now they can finally experience it in a medium that they enjoy. I love the subtle differences too because they feel well thought out and keep me engaged with the show in a way that the game couldn’t.
Episode one, especially when the apocalypse really started to go down brought tears to my eyes. That plane crash made my jaw drop, literally. I don't usually get that sense of personal attachment and feeling of scale from apocalypse movies and shows but I certainly got it from this (admittedly I knew his daughter was going to die, it was the only thing I knew about the game and show) but I still fell in love with her.... BUT EPISODE THREE?!?! It BROKE me. Shattered me completely. I was bawling by the end of it. I LOVED that episode so much! And then episode 5? Shell shocked almost. Cold and sad and disappointed in what could have been but never will be. This shows ability to make someone without a connection to the game CARE so deeply about characters we JUST met... is incredible. I certainly think episode three though... that's going down in history as one of if not THE best episode in television currently known to us. It felt like a four hour film, a life time. It was so beautiful and respectful and SAD, GOD DAMN IT'S SO SAD BUT I LOVE IT... ugh... indescribably wonderful. There aren't enough words to explain my love for episode three. It would take me a novel to write all of that out but I think I've gotten my point across lol. I absolutely look forward to the rest of the series and hopefully when I get my system maybe even play the game. Let's pray this can land as strongly as its taken off and as gracefully as it's currently flying
I firmly believe this will go down as one of the greatest television series ever made. It certainly is way up there in HBO’s roster. And I will largely credit this success to Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin’s incredible creative partnership as the showrunners. To have both the creator, director and writer of the games alongside the man behind one of the most acclaimed short series ever in Chernobyl who just happens to be a long time huge fan of the games as well, perfect combination that balances respect for the source material with what works in this different medium. Listening to Neil and Craig on the TLOU podcast breaking down each episode with Joel’s original actor, Troy Baker hosting is fascinating as they unravel the show’s production, writing, casting, directing, effects… This was made with a love that you really can’t match anywhere else and it shows… so good.
I'm really surprised Tim didn't pick up on the opening with the scientists. A cure is impossible. To contrast the ending of the episode, With Ellie being immune. The show's end goal has been established.

This new zombie show about Hilda and the Mandalorian struggling to get to Lab Discovera is amazing, my thoughts on current 5 episodes out. Episode 1- Amazing premiere Episode 2- I love Joel, Ellie, and Tess trip through the Natural Plains. It is sad that Tess died. Episode 3- This is one the best romantic subplots I'd ever seen. Fun fact, the key chain on Ellie's backpack is an enemy from the Kirby games. It's sad that Ellie is living in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Episode 4- Not matter what the future brings, Starbucks being shit will never change. Joel and Ellie road trip was amazing, The Chekhov's gun of Lyanna I meant Ellie secret gun was fantastic and paid off well, and it's so sweet to see Joel laugh. Episode 5- Ellie being an older sibling towards Sam is precious. Can Joel and Ellie supporting cast stop tragically dying for one episode!? I hate myself for thinking of the music from that Better Call Saul burial scene during the tragic ending of episode 5.
I never played the games or watched the play through videos when TLOU came out. Ngl I am kinda glad I never did because experiencing this universe for the first time is pretty freaking exhilarating (and filled with so many emotions my god). This is a great show and I’m very much obsessed now
As someone who loved the game, and am thrilled to have introduced my mom (who has never played a video game in her life besides solitaire on her laptop), to the show which she now loves, I now really appreciate the prologue scene in 1968. I am already super familiar with the world and, for me, it was indeed a bit on the nose in terms of telegraphing what’s about to happen. But to someone like my mom, it was very helpful to ground her in the world and get her invested in the story that much quicker.
Love the show. I think the part that most makes it work so well is that they managed to convey the same feelings in a different medium by doing some things differently. That "translation" was much needed (otherwise you could just play the game or watch someone's playthrough. When I first learned that Craig Mazin would be writing and how it got to happen in the first place, I developed some good faith this would work, unlike so many other projects. His way to look at it felt perfectly right, he understood "what it's actually about". I knew from watching Chernobyl that he's capable of writing "the feels" in a very organic and honest way, and boy was that good faith met, leaving impact after impact of... well, all of it. Also, I'm extremely glad that it's a weekly release. I don't think binge-watching it, especially on a first run, would do it any good. There's just too much going on to digest and think about before loading the next shovel. And that's not just on the heavy end. There's simply a lot happening on all ends, nothing is throw-away - at least to me and so far - and I would be surprised if they slowed down on that end. I hope studios (and writers) take examples like these to focus on what really makes a story and its characters worth while. Overall to me the show is "one of the best bad times to have", I would say.
Fully agree. Adaption often necessitates some changes. Things that may work for a game / book may not work when translating beat-for-beat to a show or film. What i think is the reason for the "golden age" of game adaptions is studios recognizing that they cant just cash-in on a recognizable name alone and be successful and also recognizing that game stories CAN have actual weight, drama, and emotion behind them. (it also helps that games in general have been increasing in story quality). See God of War moving from generic action / revenge plotline to this deeper story of a father and son
I’ve never played the game but my husband told me this is his favorite story ever, out of movies, books, all of it. So I couldn’t miss experiencing it with him and now I love it too!
I think the fact that Craig Maizon adores the games, and that he is working with Neil Druckmann (creative director for TLOU at Naughty Dog) are the key elements for the success of this adaptation. Before this I thought that The Sandman was a near-perfect adaptation, with Good Omens close behind. But The Last of Us is right up there with them. Considering that Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers of all time, and the two other near-perfect adaptations are his work…it says a lot. But there’s a reason I never played the game (I watched a playthrough). It’s so incredibly bleak. I know why, but I wonder sometimes how things would have turned out differently if they had included just a little more hope. I would love to see you compare Andor with TLOU, for example. Both stories of authoritarian regimes oppressing people and how resistance often requires getting one’s hands dirty. Of course Andor doesn’t have zombies, but The Last of Us isn’t really about the zombies anyway. It’s about the consequences of humanity’s hubris, about how we are often our own worst enemy, about how love can enhance your humanity but also drive you to do terrible things. I think there are some interesting parallels and some interesting divergences that could be explored.
I think the reason why a lot of the first half of the first episode had all that tension was because of that very first scene. It’s the classic Hitchcock definition of planting a bomb and telling the audience that it’s there and is going go off, the only difference being the audience doesn’t know exactly when. The Last of Us is amazing and I admire your work.
So what I liked was that they didn’t totally erase the video game adaptation aspect of it. Like the first two episodes definitely had sequences where you go, OK, this was the video game tutorial level or this was a set piece in the game (like in the second episode where they are in the museum, Joel gets separated from Tess, and he has to contend with an uberzombie), but still manages to keep a great story. I’m not actually a big fan of zombie apocalypse media, but I’ve enjoyed this. It is probably my favorite since 28 Days Later.
I also think we see a rise in video games adaptations because these tv shows are almost totally assured to tell their stories from A to Z - whether the adaptation is only one season or multiple seasons, because the tv show comes with a pre-established fanbase and money (which has not been made by the tv show, but by - usually - a very successful video game). It's a virtuous circle: viewers (new and old) know the show is an adaptation of a successful video game (which means there is money and a higher chance of the story being finished), therefore viewers will tune in and get many views for the tv show (which will push for the show's renewal, etc, etc.). In a world where art is left behind for profit, only self-assured tv shows are a mean for great storytelling without cancellation for (allegedly) low budgets. Also, I really loved how they expanded Bill and Frank storyline. Some people say it wasn't necessary but I think it kinda is, it's so rare to see a gay lovestory, especially about adult gay men and not always teenagers coming out in highschool. It was so well-written, so soft and beautiful, and I bet most viewers of The Last of Us (especially new viewers, since players from the game already know about Ellie being gay) weren't expecting this kind of story in the third episode. Heck, even queer viewers weren't expecting it!! And that's great, because usually queer people are going to watch something because of the queer content in it, so we know it's in there and there is no surprise. Also, detractors and homophobes will also attack these same tv shows and movies for the queer rep, sometimes without even seeing the tv shows/movies in question. But in this instance, nobody knew and so, everybody watch it for what it was - a love story in a post-apocalyptic world.
I never played the game, but I knew a good deal about it because of the internet. I love this show so much, especially the 3rd episode, which broke me emotionally but in the best way.
I think Episode 3 is still my favorite as of this moment, purely for how well they fleshed out Bill and Frank's backstory and just how touching it was to see this beautiful and healthy love story blossom in a world full of dread and a lack of trust. Also the moment with the Bloater from last weekend's episode was awesome
It's all been great, but Episodes 3 & 5 have really blown me away with how they've felt like stories that bring the notes and environmental storytelling in the games to life.
Since you mentioned how animation is a very good vehicle to tell video game stories, I would be very curious of your opinion on The Legend of Vox Machina, the animated show based on Critical Role, the d&d livestream. The second season has just finished on Prime, and most people seem to realy like it, both as an adaptation of a d&d campaign, and as a story driven animated show.
Love this show so much and so excited to see you doing a video about it! Most recent episode was just incredible, though honestly that can be said about every episode! If you did videos on breaking down each episode I would watch those in a heartbeat!
The biggest, and practically only, reason I've never played the games is how much it seemed to be misery porn, "humanity sucks", and especially the whole "THAT NPC YOU KILLED HAD A FAMILY YOU'RE A TERRIBLE PERSON FOR KILLING THEM" (even though you the player aren't really given the opportunity to not shoot NPCS). Given how prevalent that all is in the zombie genre as a whole it came off to me as being dark and gritty for it's own sake rather than having something different or interesting to say about it. It didn't really occur to me until the latest episode just how much the show is decidedly more hopeful in tone, that while the apocalypse can bring out the worst in people (Kathleen's self destructive pursuit of vengeance, being the latest example), it can also bring out the best in people (Bill and Frank helping total strangers and finding love, the doctor risking everything for Henry and Sam), and even though not everyone gets a happy ending, there will at least be days or nights that will be happy and filled with laughter and fun. And I kinda love it for that.
This is a great series no doubt, but one thing I'm feeling right now is kind of diminishing returns with repeated tragedy? Brutal moment after brutal moment can begin to mean less and make the show feel a little less dynamic? The one exception being the third episode (easily the best so far). But I get that it's pretty early and they're still kind of just coloring how bleak the world is and all that. I hope the show can feel a bit more emotionally dynamic in the latter half of the season. (To be clear, this show is a full A so far.)
Love the content, as always! I thought you'd be talking about the 5th episode (it was in the thumbnail). I loved how Last of Us made us feel for the characters, and gradually they strengthen Ellie and Joel's relationship, which felt like a whole build up to 5th episode (not gonna give spoilers obv), but the way Joel looked out for Ellie, the silent communication between the two really solidifies the bond they have. It was an intense and really well choreographed scene, ooofff! It had been a very long time since I cared for real, authentic characters. Really well adaptation indeed.
I also didn’t initially like the hook of episode 1, because I immediately picked up on it being an exposition dump and it felt a little drawn out on first watch. However after rewatching the episode I think it is a very strong hook. It gives crucial information to understand the world the story is set in and how that came to be, and because after watching it you know there will be a fungal outbreak, it laces the entire pre outbreak sequence with Sarah with tension and dread. You know that something it going to happen that entire time, and your just waiting for the other shoe to drop. And anytime a something small happens, like when the kid in Sarah’s class was flicking his wrist or the clock shop owners closing early or the grandma in the background, that dread just rises even more because you know something is about to happen, you just don’t know when. The opening scene also creates a strong emotional connection very quickly with the audience by using an experience nearly everyone on the planet shared, our recent experience with a pandemic. With the first words of the scene your attention is immediately piqued because you hear something that is very familiar. That shared experience also allows them to set the fear of a fungal infection in place by explaining how deadly and devastating it is compared to what we know with Covid. It also established that this ideas is not nearly as far fetched as it seems by making the audience aware that cordyceps is a real fungus that already creates “zombies” and in real life it’s really only a step of evolution away from the last of us becoming a real thing. That only further contributes to the fear and dread the scene sets up, because while it may not be as action packed or outright terrifying as the opening to a zombie show “should” be, it sets up the scenes to come very well and I don’t think Sarah’s story would have been nearly as terrifying or compelling if that scene had been left out.
Ive only watched the First 2 episodes, and what Sold me on Bella Ramsay was... That angry stomping away in ep 1. All the adults are pointing guns at each other, Marlene tells Ellie to get her bag, and Ellie gets Up and struts away angrily as If the guns werent a concern. It was Peak teen anger and i loved it!
I don't care much for video games. Not that I don't respect the art nor the hobby, I just lack the time for playing between work, writing, painting, reading, going out. However I actually played tlou with a friend when it came out and it was so captivating! Luckily its been a long time, so can enjoy the show to the fullest. I made the mistake and re-read Good Omens shortly before the show came out, likewise I read Dune only a year before the movie was released. My memory was too fresh and I kinda just waited for plot points to happen instead of being engaged with the story.
Not a gamer and don’t have cable, but I did dig into the original game when I was trying write my own post-apocalyptic story. No zombies, but it does have the “man is the real monster” trope and themes of trauma, isolation, and redemption.
I absolutely believe we are in the golden age for adaptations. I agree with another commenter when I say we have millennial and gen z filmmakers just coming up, and they are putting every bit of love they can into these adaptations. I went into this with fairly low expectations (the fact that Pedro and Bella were cast is ultimately what got me to even watch the pilot). TLOU is probably my favorite game series of all time, and I’ve been playing games for over 20 years. By the time the opening scene was over, my immediate thought was “oh they really put time into this.” Every week I think they’ve absolutely peaked, and every week I am blown away. I am so excited to see what they do with season 2.
I have to disagree about the first scene as just dry exposition and laying out stuff; or rather, it has to be that in order to set the tension of the whole Sarah bit. The idea of a fungal infection going rampant is probably a novel concept to a general audience, and it needed to have a weighty introduction so we'd take it seriously. It's an elaboration of Hitchcock's "Bomb under the dinner table," and I thought it was just enough to sell me on the premise without overstaying its welcome.
Im really loving this adaptation, I wanted to shared with my sister, she liked the walking dead so I assume she wasn’t gonna have a problem with the whole zombie aspect of the story. So I asked if she wanted to watch it and we did but she didn’t seemed to like it cause she spent most of her time texting on her phone, too bad but she didn’t seemed to like it, she said she did but I know her and I wasn’t really convinced
I do honestly think we’re officially reaching a golden age of video game adaptations. In addition to the ones you mentioned, there have also been Detective Pikachu and the Sonic movies that also knocked it out of the park. I’m just really hoping the Mario movie is also good, but it’s hard to say given Chris Pratt not even trying for a Mario voice. 😩 Otherwise, can uhhhhhh all the people working on live action anime stuff PLEASE take some notes, I am no longer begging agdjshsnsvshsks
I found the opening scene particularly effective mainly due to John Hannah's excellent delivery (I really grew to appreciate him in Agents of SHIELD, though he was fun in The Mummy), but also felt it did a good job giving us the exposition establishing a threat in a unique manner, where it felt like it built things - something that became especially important with the way subsequent episodes worked, avoiding giving us the actual infected very much. It's something I felt did not work with the second episode's flashback because we were already in the story and had the threat established (and it's explained better in that episode by the actual characters we're following). Have really loved this show so far (now 5 eps in) and am curious to see where season breaks will be. At this pace, I'm thinking we'll get about half the game this season and the next half for season 2, then maybe onto Part 2 for season 3+, but I might be off on my estimations by a season. If they do plan to do Part 2, I wonder if they're pre-filming stuff for its flashbacks, so Bella Ramsey hasn't aged too much once they get to when they'd need them.

I think previous game adaptations were generally made by filmmakers who looked down on games, they saw film as the superior artform and so when they were adapting something they saw it as their chance to 'make it good now' by changing things. Where a lot of the more modern, successful adaptations have either been made by fans of the game, or even people directly involved in creating the games who want to make something relatively faithful to it.
I'm enjoying it too. I only wished they would use the cinematography more widely and make more shots into beautiful paintings. Like, there's been some cool shots but it's not that impressive compared to the cinematography of Chernobyl or House of the Dragon, for example.
It’s crazy to see the franchise I’ve loved to also be loved and pretty much eek into mainstream water cooler discussion. I really want to see how this continues especially by this seasons end, and even more so with how the show proceeds with arguably one of the most divisive and controversial sequels, not even in games but just…in media. I think the rollercoaster we embark on with season 2 depending how they play in the show will be huge

I've been a Last Of Us fan since it first came out and I love pretty much every change for the series, the new stuff keeps longtime fans on their toes about what's going to happen while the easter eggs made post-episode discussions so so much fun with my fiancé (who has never played the games)
I haven't played the game and I probably won't because I think it's too intense for me. I also wouldn't be able to watch it without my boyfriend, who has played the game, knows what's going on, but doesn't spoil it for me and who can tell me when I can look at the screen again when something particularly gruesome/cruel/disturbing happens. That being said, I really like this show and am excited for the journey they will go on, even though I'm sure it will make me cry so many more times...
I wonder if the prologue was inspired by the one in "I am Legend," where Dr Krippin was talking about altering the measles virus to fight cancer - the difference between them, (and why i think The Last of Us prologue is weaker) is that Dr Krippin wasn't giving us a warning; she was celebrating a medical breakthrough, and then it cuts to 5 years later, and New York is in ruins.
I'm really liking it so far. The deviations make sense or feel good (very happy with the Bill x Frank stuff), and they actually had me hoping episode 5 would end happily. I just hope they can make one or two adjustments for Part Two. (SPOILERS) It was...fine. It just felt like misery porn to me, and none of the characters were likable. Not in the Succession way where it's funny or they've got some charisma, but actually unlikable.
Would love to hear you talk about The Witcher. It's interesting in terms of adaptions since it was adapted from the books to both a video game series and the netflix show.
Breaking bad is my favorite show and i never expected it but this is definitely a close second. If it keeps up the quality this show is going to be amazing.
I have only ever played the start of the game (I'm not a big fan of shooter-ish games) but I too am hooked and love the story! I'm currently waiting to watch episode 6 because I promised my boyfriend we would be watching it together :3 Episode 3 was especially great! (No spoilers here!) It was the first time I really liked a story like that! It was amazing!
The 60s panel intro worked for me coz I don't wanna imagine another pandemic-like event. The threats of extreme climate and antibiotic-resistant pathogens are real.
I think that inclusion of a prelude, is both the hook for the built in zombie audience, for people who did not know about the game who are iffy. And also, it is about changing the last of us into a more horrifying theme. By spending so much more time on how it happened, and placing it into much more realistic circumstances, the viewer who suspends disbelief can get the unsettled fear when they see a black spot under the sink they anxiously scrub away. Obviously the science shows us that it is a long way off. But if it crossed into mammals or gene modification were to advance rapidly and something got out that was much closer to a human infecting cordicep fungus…
I usually avoid adaptations after the harsh betrayal of my favourite cartoon series by M. Night Shyamalan... But this one really blew my mind. I was so sad they were planning an adaptation because most of them focus and glorify the wrong details of the original and change the theme, but I was elated to be proved wrong. Here are the main reasons why I think this adaptation worked so well: - The writer being the same for the game and TV series meant that the core of the story remained the same (the relationship between Joel and Ellie, in this case) - The long episodes and clearly big budget allowed them to reach whatever pacing and perspective each part of the story demanded I'm not sure I will be able to stomach season 2 unless they add something more cathartic to the ending but this first season was extremely satisfying and really honoured the beloved original work.
I’ve never played the game myself but have watched playthroughs of part 1 and 2 so am familiar with the story. I love the show so far I think it’s fantastic
I knew this show would work. I’m so happy it did. Now, pllllllllease give me a Red Dead adaptation. I have serious doubts about the other currently greenlit game adaptations. Maybe when Flanagan’s Dark Tower succeeds, that may help interest in westerns as well.
Re: your question about why video game adaptations are getting better. Here's my theory. Because the people making them now *grew up playing them* and they are finally in powerful enough positions that they can do justice to the games they love and bring other people into the project of a similar mindset. In this instance, I think it is also really helpful that one of the creators of the game is heavily involved in all aspects of the TV show.
funny you mention rings of power cause i literally forgot about that show which shows how little it impacted me whereas Im constantly excited for each new episode of the last of us and the game before impacted me so much i revised it multiple times throughout the years, something i rarely do with story narrative games and tv shows
I never played the game bc I never had a PS (tho I already preordered it on steam as soon as it was announced) I tried my best to stay away from anything related to the game bc I always wanted to experience the story properly for myself. Mind you this was over the course of years. But, I figured if I can't play the game I might as well watch the show, and holy fuck. I think I cried in every episode except 4
I also think the fact that these adaptations are series instead of movies makes a better fit. Since you get that same slow burn and get much more immersed in the world similar to video games
Coming in here late but I'm just gonna talk about the adaptation thing in general. All the previously mentioned good adaptations were animated, and were done really well. A lot of people dunked on the pre-release reviews of The Last of Us as "breaking the video game adaptation curse" because Castlevania and Arcane and Cyberpunk area already great adaptations. I think the critics should have said that it was breaking the live action video game adaptation curse instead. Because that's what they did. They could have easily made the show animated and make it shot for shot like the game without sacrificing realism (like Joel being able to [GAME SPOILER] survive falling onto exposed rebar). An animated TLOU adaptation would mean Joel taking more hits like the game can be realistic. He could have been more traditionally badass. But they adapted it to a more grounded medium, live action. And that's what I think is most commendable about the show. From adapting the game mechanics to the screenplay to the frame by frame accurate scenes to, most especially, the acting talent, they knocked it out of the park.
The show was very lucky too. Showrunner, main cast, the original creator - they were just the right people to the job. I'm afraid Horizon and GoW won't be as lucky.

I was really impressed with many changes and additions in the show. I thought the change from spores to tendrils was very cool, and more realistic, because in-game, you're still covered in spores head to toe, mask or not, surface air decontaminates people? I mean maybe, I'm no scientist, but I accepted it. The hive-like mind is awesome and terrifying, and adds so much potential. The Kansas City community was a really great addition, revolutionaries, Henry's more complex morals and self guilt, etc. Though, I do prefer some things in the game too, which is inevitable when stories translate to other mediums. I think the show is more "wholesome?" idk if that's the right word, or maybe optimistic, less bleak at certain parts. For instance the 180° with Bill's ending which is happier, or Ellie's last interaction with Sam, which is a lot less comforting/reassuring in the game, those moments helped contrast the happier moments with Ellie and Joel, and I kinda miss that, like keep the "lows" low, and the "highs" high. Maybe it's just me, those still were heavy moments for our protagonists either way. Overall, I do really enjoy the show, I wish The Walking Dead translated as well as this show did from it's source material.
one of the complaints about the second game’s story telling was that it seemed to retconn so much of the emotional story from the first game. (no spoilers here), i was very concerned that we’d see this played out in the tv adaptation. so far, so good. other than joel being somewhat softer and less cold, it seems to be working out well. now my only concern is how they’ll fit all the beats i’d like to see in four more episodes!
SPOILERS FOR LIKE 80% OF THE WAY THROUGH THE GAME SERIOUSLY DONT READ IF YOU DONT WANT SPOILERS I really love this show so far. Like I adore it. The actors are brilliantly cast and the production is amazing. I am adoring the way theyre fleshing out characters and giving more depth to Ellie and Joel's relationship. There was ONE THING. ONE LINE I missed, that I wish was included, that was important to me, and created my line in the game (that as of now looks like would be in next weeks episode). And thats when Joel carries Sarah to her bed in the beginning he says "Goodnight baby girl." and its such a tender moment. And its not there. And the reason that I wish it was is because in my favorite scene of like, the entire game, when Joel gets to Ellie after she kills David, he says "Oh, baby girl its ok" and THAT is the moment where all the walls come down and he holds her and you know that he sees her as his daughter now. I genuinely think its the strongest moment of the game, to me. Like I had a good cry about that one. And its perfect and I'm kind of sad that its not going to be quite the same. THAT BEING SAID. I think they're going to pull it off just as strongly. Theyve been building up the relationship beautifully, and I get to have NEW favorite scenes like Joel crying and telling Tommy about how scared he was that the dog was going to hurt Ellie. So I'm really not so much complaining as I am highlighting something from the game I really love because its such a lovely and touching parallel that is brought back at THE PERFECT moment imho. This whole time Joel has been trying to separate Ellie from Sarah. We just recently saw Joel tell Ellie shes not his daughter. And then in just one line they DESTROY that because that's what he called Sarah in one of the few scenes we got with them and its so EFFICIENT and it hit me like a goddamn TRUCK the first time I played it. I'm sure theyll find a whole new way to make me cry about it next week and I am UTTERLY unprepared. Hats off to the whole team, I love this show. It made me fall in love with TLOU all over again.
4:17 they got my mom hard, I mentioned in the future it was a guy and his replacement daughter and she just assumed Sarah was the daughter and we were gonna find the new dad. I did not correct her 😅😅
I'd be curious after watching the whole season what your opinion is. I liked the show. I thought episode 1, 2, and 5 were 10/10. The rest of the show was great but by the end of the show I was finding it hard to be an apologist for the lack of infected. It wouldn't have been that big of deal except the whole time I kept thinking "why are they working so hard to get a cure? There's barely any infected in this world" 😅
It's nice to finally see a good and successful adaptation of a story from a different medium that people are loving. A video game I think would make an incredible adaptation if done right would 100% be Red Dead Redemption 2. There is literally no video game that I think deserves a respectful adaptation more, that's all I'll say. The game is the best thing that ever came from the western genre.
Now five episodes in, the only fault I can find is that sometimes the pacing feels a bit rushed. I've never played the games, so it may be the same, but it feels like they're trying to condense so many individual plots into the grander story to the point where it has become a little too busy.
As someone who's never played the games and is generally annoyed with how a lot of franchises are adapted, it is incredibly refreshing whenever I see an adaptation that doesn't need to heavily lean into a gimmick in order to gain a lot of attention.
I haven't played the games, but I see that the next episode (Ep. 6) brings them all the way to Wyoming. I've loved the series so far, but their journey across the country has felt perhaps a bit too quick.
