I recently watched episodes 1 and 2 of HBO The Last of Us starring Perdo Pascal and Bella Ramsey. So far I think it's a great show to make a videoessay on, particularly a deep dive scene analysis breaking down the best scene from episodes 1 and 2. These are what I think the best scenes are and this is my attempt to analyze them in depth.
My Little Thought Tree is my channel for drawing out the deeper meaning and emotion in film, TV, and the world at large through relaxed, analytical video essays. I am a professional counsellor and often draw on my psychology and therapy background to better understand characters, themes, and emotion in fiction. I upload every Saturday and occasionally on Tuesdays, if I'm feeling productive.

Use the code TREE for 40% off World Anvil with the link worldanvil.com/?c=mltt Or else try it out for free...if you want to anyway. I'm not gonna tell you what to do...just so long as you watch my videos. By the way, Bella Ramsey is really, really great in this role. People being annoyed that she doesn't look like "Game Ellie" seems odd to be. She embodies the personality brilliantly and works really well as a foil to Joel, that much is obvious in all their interactions together.

I like the slight change to _how_ Joel drags Ellie away from Tess. In the game it's almost like Ellie leads him out while apologizing and Joel is stuck on just not thinking about it and keeping his head; but here, it's just a snap decision of "So we're doing this" and he drags Ellie skidding on the floor behind him while she's fighting back. These aren't quite the same characters from the game, but I really like this Joel.

I think its a great point you bring up about how many people were immune in the past? Maybe they burned them all before anyone could find out. Maybe there were immune people at the start of all this, but they got bombed out or killed in other ways. Everyone was so focused on their individual groups survival, not all of humanity, and the solution could have been right there the whole time. Great metaphor for politics, global warming, and all of that.

The more i think about it. Its so cool how they constantly play with "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" with the idea that "Humanity starts at home"

I love this show, you don't even need to be familiar with the original games to enjoy it. I love how they casted Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and Merle Dandridge in the show as well, with the latter playing her original role.

I think another interesting aspect of the kiss was that the runner recognizes Tess as one of their own, and maybe her hesitancy in using the lighter is actually the fungus taking over her, and her managing to beat it in the end by choosing to die as herself. Earlier in the same ep, Tess mentions how all the infected are connected and now that she is also infected, the infected man is "connecting with her", much like they do when they lie on the ground bound by the same roots.

Really enjoyed this analysis, thank you! As a lover of the game and the show I always felt they're really good for therapists to tackle in general so I was hyped when I saw this in my sub box The acting from the FEDRA agent has been underdiscussed in general by the fanbase imo... she conveys so much sorrow in the tearing up and subtle microexpressions but always keeps it just behind the comforting "you're safe" mask and I cannot imagine that is simple or easy for an actor to do I hope she gets more work, I've not seen her in anything else as far as I know

Seems like I really wasn't paying attention in the first episode, because I thought that boy was a younger Ellie and it really made it difficult to understand what was happening later. Thanks for clearing that up!

If I remember rightly, the red and green combo also can make the viewer feel unsettled or even nauseous! So even if those earlier hints of red and green aren't tied into the theme the way you think, I still think it was an intentional choice.

I couldn't help also thinking red and green could represent the red of human blood vs the green of the infected... although that's the reverse of red light=infected and green=clean, so who knows? Glad it wasn't just me thinking it anyway 😆

I don't see any moral dilemma. The infected are killed , because there is no hope for them anyway. To put them down is the obvious choice, it's better for the infected , they are out of their misery and it's the only safe way of dealing with the infected for not-infected people anyhow. Frankly I find nothing immoral or brutal in the killing of infected children , it's just what has to happen. Also the fact of the officer comforting the child before giving him a anaesthetica ist a very kind and human way of killing a doomed child. Their is no need to scare it and make his last moments miserable.
@josephcarreon2341
@josephcarreon2341 Год назад
I think this is what makes the show as great as it is. Especially with the ending. Everyone draws a line differently. People born into that world would more than likely see it your way, but it is completely understandable if people born before the infection struggle to still kill an innocent child. In this case, they killed the child before he was able to fully change. That is where I believe a lot of the morality is argued. I don't think no one is arguing that the child should've been particularly spared, but when is it okay to kill him? Do you kill them before or after they change? Is it more moral to let the kid choose rather than making the decision for him?
@mylittlethoughttree
@mylittlethoughttree Год назад
Yeah that's how I see it. It's killing someone who still, for the moment, is human. Rationality says it's right to kill but that person might still beg or cry and you couldn't help feeling bad. And also the point of Ellie is to emphasise these people might not turn into infected. They could very well be immune

How does this frame FEDRA as the bad guys? Other things may, but this certainly isn’t one of them. Should they let an infected kid in the QZ to be merciful? Or let him back out to complete the infection, which would make him a prisoner in his own body, while the fungus grows from the inside out?

Okay so for me I'm really enjoying the show, but although I liked the idea of the slow approach of the infected in Tess' last scene as you said, I really disliked the innovation from the game of the kiss of death. I've seen them try to explain it away by saying that it hammers home how the shows going for the idea of "infection by tendril" rather than spores, but honestly it just feels like a shoehorning - its the same old horror trope of using motifs adjacent to sexual violence against women to carry shock value and yuck factor, which just feels so cheap and shitty to see used in a show that otherwise is doing far better than that?? Your points about how we see fascinating emotions in her as we see her overcome by fear and give up almost are ABSOLUTELY reasons to run the scene in that way up to that point, but the infected slowly taking her down or biting into her neck would've achieved the same 'softness' or lack of violence the directors seem to have quoted as a motivator for this scene without giving it overtones of rape culture. I've got a lot more respect for a creator when their story can carry the desired themes without using those types of motifs as vehicles for it.
@nathanielraefraughton5218
@nathanielraefraughton5218 Год назад
This is the one thing that really bothered me. It’s kinda funny that it’s supposed to be the lack of violence that motivated this scene because the kiss felt like an incredible violation. It seemed very unnecessary and took me out of the scene entirely wondering why they would make this choice.
@squirlmy
@squirlmy Год назад
jeezus! how jaded to you have to be to think "motifs adjacent to sexual violence against women to carry shock value and yuck factor, which just feels so cheap and shitty"???? It's not about "sexual violence" as much as a symbol of just pure sex! And, no film maker can overdo sexual symbolism, imo. I think YOU are making it about rape symbolism. The woman, as you even point out, has already given up on her own survival, but is using that time as an opportunity to destroy them all by dropping the lighter. And according to what I've heard, the reason for the tendrils rather than video game spray is because a spray of spores is so difficult to achieve, particularly through CGI. Not sexual symbolism, but an attempt to recreate the game's effects, yet still use impressive graphics. The tendrils are an interesting animation. "Biting the neck" is really impossible to graphically show, from any camera angle. Good grief, dismissing "rape" as a overused trope? what is wrong with you?
@squirlmy
@squirlmy Год назад
@@nathanielraefraughton5218 because CGI animation of the spray of spores was too complicated. And yet, they wanted to replace it with a still impressive graphical effect. Purely technical. Are you saying the scene triggered you in some way?
@nathanielraefraughton5218
@nathanielraefraughton5218 Год назад
@@squirlmy I'm saying I didn't enjoy it and would have preferred it being done differently but I didn't write it. They obviously thought it was the best choice, and I have every right to disagree with that choice. I wasn't aware of the change from spores to tendrils as I've never played the games, but regardless of the technical challenges it doesn't really change my mind on the necessity of throwing the kiss in there. I will freely admit that sexual things showing up where they wouldn't normally be expected to does tend to bug me so maybe it's just a personal hang up of mine but either way I didn't care for it. On the other hand everything else about this show has been great so it's not really that big of a deal in the grand scheme just a small piece I didn't enjoy in a show that I love.

@mueggsy
@mueggsy Год назад
in case you didn't know, Joel's daughter is a blonde-haired white girl in the games, and her being black/mixed is a change made for the show. so while there absolutely is a problematic trend of non-white characters getting brutally killed in this genre, it's debatable whether this instance counts due to the source material

@@boneappletea3858 while this piece of media is certainly not exempt from this kind of critique, this one in particular feels like it's erring on bad faith. i highly doubt they changed the race of sarah's character because they need to "build up to something as tragic as the death of a white girl." bc in the game, sarah's death is meant to set the tragic tone for the story to follow, so there really isn't something more tragic to "build up" to. i could also point out that hbo changed her race because the death of a little black girl holds just as much weight and import to the story and the audience's heartstrings as the death of a little white girl, so the race swap doesn't matter. that being said, I really don't blame you for being suspicious of a decision like this, given the trends in other media and the copious amount of POC character deaths in TLOU game. this is really a matter of "wait and see" for me, because the showrunners said they would be introducing new characters, so I'm withholding my judgment in the hopes that we'll be getting some good, complex new POC characters who make it to the end of the show :)
@boneappletea3858
@boneappletea3858 Год назад
What I meant was the first death of a main character that's white in the source material being changed to black seems sus in a stereotypical black dude dies in a horror movie sort of way but I doubt it was done in racist spirit.

@@boneappletea3858 that's a fair point. again, i'm crossing my fingers that we'll get some good new POC characters that will show that the showrunners are cognizant of these racist tropes and have made the effort to subvert them
