I believe Mark Hamill was the only one told what the actual line was, and even on set and in the script they said that Obi-Wan was his father. So his reaction seemed off for everyone else on the set if I'm remembering the story right. Everyone else basically found out about the spoiler only after the line was dubbed in I guess.
@@R2Bl3nd I believe the original fake line was that Obi Wan actually killed his father. Mark Hamill has an interview about it with Graham Norton where he recounts the whole story. It's actually a really funny interview and I highly recommend watching it if you haven't; my favorite parts of it were Mark's account of Ford's reaction to the twist and when Lucas and the director (the only ones who initially knew what the line was really going to be) decided to tell the line to Mark (so he would know how to act) telling him that if the twist came out before the movie did they would know it was Mark's fault.

If I had a Time Machine, I’d go back to opening night in 1980 just to experience it. My Dad told me stories about how crazy the audience was when they heard Vader say he’s Luke’s father. People gasped because absolutely no one saw it coming. One of the greatest plot twists in cinematic history!
Nobody saw it coming because it was a retcon. Darth Vader and Luke's father were originally supposed to be separate characters hence the lack of foreshadowing. It remained so even in early drafts of Episode V.
Sequels better than the original movie in 1980 was extremely rare! Star Wars '77 was already a phenomenon. When this hit the theaters, the franchise was thrown into uncharted territory!
I love how this is an attempt to alter Vaders line to “No Luke”, but the “Luke” line is taken from about 40 seconds after this, and you can still hear the flute from the music 💀
It's actually rather sad line now I read between the lines. Deep down, Darth Vader didn't want to kill his own son, hence maybe a sincere plea to Luke before Darth Vader is forced to kill him.

In my country i saw the Movie for the very first time in 1991. We were 11 year old boys and went to cinema after classes. This scene shocked us all. I still remember my feelings.
Yes I remember it freaked me out when I watched it as a kid... the original star wars was the first movie I ever went to...I think I was 10. Then I went to this one and was so shocked about Darth Vader being his father...it was such a surprise back then!

i remember being with my step father at a cinema the day of release for this movie and the theatre went nuts in shock over this revelation. i was 9 at the time and even then realized i was experiencing something incredible. Amazing moment to be alive and experience.
I don't think this is legitimate. Video cameras with VHS tapes DID exist back then, but for it to be this good of quality and have absolutely no timestamps on it (all Video Cameras back then defaulted to including timestamps and removing them was practically impossible until the late 90's) would have required some serious editing (plus converting to DVD and then digital, which on digital the editing could process could finally be started) and I doubt whoever recorded it would have pulled that off. By timestamp, I mean the date of recording and the time of day should have appeared in the bottom right corner of the screen. While you can make a case that the owner cropped it out upon digitally converting it to be RU-vid ready, why would you do that? The date adds validity and authenticity to the owner actually being there, and if it were me, I'd be proud to show that off, not want to hide it. More importantly though, the famous line is "No, I am your father," where this audio incorrectly says "No Luke, I am your father." which was never said but often misremembered that way. If you don't believe this part, google it.
No one knew about this, the original script that all the actors had said a different line. Only Mark Hammil, George Lucas, and Irvin Kershner knew about the actual line.
Sam Haynes that‘s wrong because the Plan to make Vader Luke‘s Father came up while filming Empire strikes back and he already had the name in A New Hope. And the German word for father is Vater, not Vader.
It is crazy to think about the guts Kershner, Kasden, and Lucas had to basically flip everything from the first movie on it’s head…where Bespin looks like Heaven in the clouds, then a large chunk of the end is seemingly the characters “descent into Hell”…as you go from beautiful sky and city in the clouds, to dark reactors, dimly lit carbon freezing chambers, and the city’s air shaft…all the while, Han gets frozen, C3PO gets dismembered, Luke gets his arm cut off and finds out that the face of evil is his father.
I will never forget being able to see the original trilogy in theaters. This moment had us going through so many different emotions. Confused, angry, excited to see what would come next. Amazing experience.

That was b/c it was Generation X and Star Wars was a huge hit and everyone was watching this*** Your right it was a good time to be alive.. I wish we had a time machine to go back in time.. 21st century is a horrible one.
I wasn't born yet in 1980. But when I DID finally get the chance to see this (I was about 8), I was one of the fortunate few that did NOT have this scene spoiled for me. My 8-year-old mind was like, 'I didn't know you could do that in a movie'. And then years later, I learned that the cast wasn't told about the twist until they were about to film the scene. And Mark Hamill was the first cast member they told it to. If you ever get the chance, look up the interview about it. It's pretty interesting. They were as surprised during filming as the audience was in the theaters.
oh my god watching this scene back, I literally felt a shiver go down my body right when Vader said “I am your father”… and I’ve watched this movie so many times before
One way of telling this is fake is there's no echo when Luke or Vader are talking. There's an echo in the original film and was later removed with the special editions.

Yes, back then there was no internet, Even if somehow we manage to not get spoiled nowadays, there are too many shows which make these kind of twist feel a bit cliche.
Not sure about how illegal recording happened in the US, but i do recall some from my my country in the 80's. They used a stand, huge camera and told us kids to keep quiet bc this is for the television. We were impressed and shut up - we thought we'd be now on television! X'D

I thought they recorded the scene with both actors saying "Obi-Wan killed your father" and the only person who knew was James Earl Jones when he was doing the voice-overs.

I’m not sure if this video is real. Some commenters say it is not and others beg to differ due to the various releases. The description states this video was done for aesthetic reasons. I’m utterly confuzzled. 🤷♂️
@@walangchahangyelingden8252 Mark was pulled aside at the last minute during the filming scene by the director and told Mark not to say anything about the "I Am your Father" scene to anyone on set or outside of set. Mark explained it on the Graham Norton show
Still get goosebumps everytime I see this scene, and ive always known the twist as I watched Star Wars in 2009 when I was 17! Wish I got to see it in the cinema when we didn’t know. Must have been unreal 😩
I saw it in the theater, late June 1980. I had just turned 7. I was so shocked and borderline depressed leaving the theater. Han was frozen, maybe dead and Darth Vader was Luke's father? ! And let me tell you, that was a very long 3 years to wait until Return of The Jedi came out.
This is a faked video guys. Look at the description. The audience reactions is from an Avengers screening. The “Luke” that Vader says is clearly cut and pasted from his later dialogue where he’s trying to convince look to destroy the emperor.

Yeah it’s hard for people to imagine it because it’s so ingrained in pop culture. I feel like I knew he was his father before I even saw it. But to the people at the time, must have been wild.
This identified Star Wars to me. It hurt me right in the childhood to find out that Lucas didn't plan for Vader to be Luke's father until ESB came along, despite the hints dropped in the first film (Kenobi's paused glance before he told Luke how his father died, Uncle Owen saying "That's what I'm afraid of")

Interestingly, it was such a shock for the people at the time, some people just straight up didn't believe it, thinking it was probably a ruse or whatever, hence why there is a scene were Yoda confirms it in The Return of the Jedi.
Now imagine if Return of the Jedi pulled a Rise of Skywalker because people on the internet complained about Vader being Luke's father. "Master Yoda...is Darth Vader my father?" "No...chewbacca, your father is."

A few years ago I showed the original trilogy to a friend of mine who is unimaginably uncultured when it comes to movies. As a kid, years before I saw the movie I knew that Vader was his father, eceryone did. So I liked to imagine what it would be like to experience it for the first time without knowing before hand. I was hoping that my friend was somehow unaware and he was. His reaction was amazing
Same. My parents were never into Star Wars and it was still a couple years before the prequels so it had kind of died down in pop culture, kids my age weren't really familiar with it. I was spending a weekend with my aunt who's really into movies and she showed the the trilogy for the first time, my mind was BLOWN by the twist.
I got into Star Wars when the Special Edition was released in '97. I knew nothing about it, saw some commercials for the VHS trilogy, bought it and discovered the plot for myself as I watched it, and for that I'm grateful. Spoilers were more difficult to come across back then. The internet can be useful, but when it comes to cinema, I still stay offline as much as I can before hand so I can enjoy being surprised.
Gosh, if this movie released today, people would take to internet and say it’s bad writing or something just because it’s clearly not the news they wanted to hear. I’m so glad audiences used to be so much less cynical back then.

I was 14 when I saw this in the movie theater. I don't think my Dad took me but I remember clearly that everyone knew that Vader was his father, it was all people talked about for weeks up to the release so it wasn't a shock but it was very cool seeing it play out and it was so well done. An amazing memory
Its mind boggling to think that the movie came out in 1980....it was just uploaded in 2020.....dude saved this clip on his phone for 30 years before uploading!!!!!
1. the clip is fake, the "luke" was taken from another place 2. the audience reaction was inserted from another film 3. the first phone with camera was sold in 2007 4. if you look closely you can see the bottom edge of the TV under the clip
Even the story on how George Lucas even kept this plot twist a secret from the entire cast and crew is incredible during a time before the internet and spoiler leaks. The only people who knew about the line change while recording was Lucas, James Earl Jones and the recorder. Cause when they shot on set Lucas gave a script where Vader says "no Obi Wan killed your father" thus Luke's reaction..but when Lucas got Jones record the voice over he gave Jones the line to say "no I am your father". The cast & crew only found out about this plot twist on premiere night. Mind blowing
Mark actually found out around a year before it was released and had to keep it a secret. Only he, George and Irvin (the director, the guy we have to thank for almost everything amazing in ESB) knew.
