Today is the second episode of my interviews with digital nomads asking them how they make money in Bali.
In this video I met more people with even more different ways of making money online. A lot of people often think that Digital nomads don't work or either make money in suspicious ways. But there is a whole world of them so I thought of sharing some of the people I interviewed and what they do. I have met pretty interesting people with very creative income streams, here they are:
Chapters
0:00 Intro
0:24 Marija from Malta
2:52 Tiara from Java
05:40 Ghassan from Lebanon
08:32 Dena from Jakarta
10:45 Kyla from Philippines
12:55 My friend Marina from Brazil
15:55 Outro with my boyfriend Jesse

@@btgoros I've been there and I'll go again. This is a country with magnificent nature and very kind and well-mannered people. But this is A VERY poor country. Especially some islands, such as Palawan - this is the most beautiful, but probably one of the poorest island.. Residential buildings - are makeshift bamboo huts without electricity, shops without refrigerators, all buildings without any glass windows. Very bad with quality food and a very low standard of living. But, nevertheless, there the most cheerful and open people I have seen in my life live there, and the best nature, I will definitely return there again.

Here is an idea for another episode. Ask them how they get paid. What apps they use to get paid. Is it direct deposit and do they bank in Bali or use a bank in their home country? Also, these interviews are great and maybe you can do a set up where other nomads can sign up with you for an interview time slot. I’m sure many would love to share their story.

Strange question . What's the problem? Any mastercard and visa (except Russian banks) and bank`s apps work without problems anywhere, including in Bali. Withdrawal and exchanges of freelancing and other platforms, I think directly, or through PayPal and similar services to a bank card. For example the real problem - the West helps Putin to keep people in Russia - imposes sanctions against ordinary people, against those people who left the war for other countries, and the West turned off VISA, MasterCard, Paypal and all money transfer services that it could turn off. And now ordinary people who are against the regime cannot work for Western companies and survive abroad. Here's the problem. And your question is not a problem at all!

Thanks for those interesting interviews! I think you forgot one important question: How do they see their future? Many interviewees make around 2-3 kUSD / month. You can have a pretty good life in Asia for this. But what are the perspectives? Are they dreaming to become rich? Thinking beyond today: What about health care? Are they ensured? Could they support a family? Or do they see this nomad life only as a temporary phase in their lives? Certainly I am envious and can imagine leading this life for a limited time. But it is also good to have a place called 'home' and rewarding to have a family and see kids growing up. What would be the balance looking back when you are old and have focused on being independent and to make money? Not implying anything. I am not sure.
@travelwithrafa
@travelwithrafa 8 месяцев назад
Thank you for the idea! I will make one with those questions sometime in the future. In my opinion/case most of these people are trying to grow their businesses so they can obviously have all of that. About health insurance -- nowadays there are many good options for digital nomads and everyone I know has it -- having this lifestyle doesn't mean that they don't think either save for their future but most of them are starting something and as most of them are young It's the time to do it. I will make a video about it tho. Thanks :)
@spo-tube
@spo-tube 8 месяцев назад
@@travelwithrafa Good to hear that the digital nomads in your circle do have health insurance! I just come every now and then across stories of foreigners in Thailand (where I lived and worked for 10 years) who turn to GoFundMe to pay their hospital bills. Those things are often underestimated. So I am curious to learn about the views about security, future plans, family, retirement funds and maybe plan B in case of failure. Thanks!

This is one of the main reasons people are staying in their comfort zone. They all want a steady paycheck on 1st, insurance, and health care. I was on both sides. What I can tell you is that now I am working in a company remotely but I am from home and I can't wait to feel alive again and go work from another place and meet new people. You will never achieve what you will get from this free lifestyle than staying in a safe place.

I´m planning to travel as of next year, and start working remotely from anywhere possible as a freelancer, quitting my corporate job. I already do work remotely but from home, without leaving my country, but since I have always been working a 9-5 for someone else, I´m kind of concerned. Especially when it comes to taxes - nobody really talks about that. Does anyone have any advise? I reside in Spain at the moment, and taxes are too high here for self-employed... I will also return here when I finish traveling.
@zarkarkas
@zarkarkas 8 месяцев назад
Taxation is complex and depends on the countries and how you structure your finance vs your business. In Spain I guess is similar to Italy (where I am from) so if you are fiscal resident there, you pay taxes for your worldwide income. Fiscal residency is where you reside at least 183 days per year and/or where is the center of your life / business. So if you register your business in Spain, your clients are in Spain and your bank account is in Spain, even if you live outside all year you may still be considered fiscal resident there and tax agency will come ask you for money. Problem is that if you work from another country, tecnically speaking you should declare that income in that country too, and then, if there is some agreement between Spain and that country, you are not taxed twice, but still everything is more complex. As well, to work from that country you need a Visa that allows that, and not a Tourist visa / VoA. These people (foreigners) most probably just take a Tourist visa / VoA and don't declare anything in Indonesia, because is kind of a grey area and unless they stay there for too long (aka many months and more), nobody checks on them.
@1nilu1
@1nilu1 8 месяцев назад
@@zarkarkas these foreigners can get a visa for 2 months in Bali, then they have to exit the country for at least 24 hours and may return for another 2 months, they have to continue to do this for the entire time they stay in the country. Other visas, for example, a business visa costs over £1000
@travelwithrafa
@travelwithrafa 8 месяцев назад
Hey! Good luck with your traveling! Most people that are digital nomads pay taxes where their company is registered. Many digital nomads find places to open their business with lower taxes like Dubai, hong Kong and they find a way to open it there. I don't have many details because I also pay for my own country but I can ask some people about it or make a video on this subject :)

Hey! Most digital nomads don't have an apartment back home and their expenses are all into the place they are at -- so no, you would not pay for 2 apartments -- most people carry around their belongings and obviously you start having less things or you leave things at family's house or rent a storage somewhere if you have too many things
@Kiracuts
@Kiracuts 8 месяцев назад
That's the best way to do it for sure, but there are also many short term nomads like the girl you spoke to that does SEO for a company (2-6 months abroad). Many people like me, have an employer that requires them to spend at least some time back home. I can work max. 6 months per year abroad. Finding affordable housing in many countries is not easy and I can't go househunting everytime I need to come back. Definitely one of the biggest challanges for me to be a digital nomad and I imagine for many other people as well that want to start working from abroad. I will sublet my apartment for my next trip so I don't pay rent twice, but I never hear people speak about this challange. Everybody has their own way to be a digital nomad and would like to hear what others do. Great video's and thanks for the inspiration :D @@travelwithrafa

@katelynnkoi
@katelynnkoi 4 месяца назад
It depends on each person's individual situation, how long they stay in which country, what kind of service they offer, and if there's double taxation treaties between the country they pay taxes in and the country they are visiting. Most of the time digital nomads don't stay in one place long enough to have to pay taxes in the country they are visiting, hence "nomad" in the title.

They are successful, making from $300k to $1.2 millions a year and enjoying life to the max, and they are not hungry enough to move to the billionaire level.

Tell you friend what she’s doing is illegal in Bali working in bali also all those supposedly digital nomads living that so called life making no money is also illegal. I’ve been living in Bali for 7 years and the govt has been ignoring this until this year These people are not paying any of the fees or taxes Bali is due and before they go online bragging about a phony life they should think twice

Digital Nomads only for young(starting from millennials) without family.I don't see old senior people(boomer) working.I think it's just temporary.

This is true. There are not many older digital nomads, and there aren't many who have done it for a long time. It's like van lifers... it sounds lovely, until you do it for a while - then it's not so lovely.

None of these strike me as being genuine business people. None of them seem to have any idea about what it really means to bring value to the table for a business client. They're all obviously dreamers, wet behind the ears newbies who haven't really got a clue about what being in business is all about. I bet most of them are either living off of their parents still, or are in Bali on an extended vacation in this hostel pretending they're successful digital nomads when the completely opposite is true.

This video is great for the new tourism task force who are now busting foreigners who are working illegally in Bali because they are doing it under a visa that isn't allowed. It's like cookies leading to the crime scene. Genius.

@@ursdreyer3122 okay I researched it still not 2 years tho 🤣🤷‍♂️ and just remember and be careful the official laws say not longer than 6 months per year , one day you show up to the border and they just tell you that you had to many tourist visas in the past and get banned same happend to me in Thailand although I always had my visas right

Marina from Brazil is probably not following the law. First, she needs a kitas to be a yoga teacher if she teaches in Bali. Second, if she is organizing retreats, so her kitas needs to include organising retreats. Third, she is saying she's also exploring Bali, which means she's a tour guide, which is impossible for foreigners in Bali to get a kitas for. So most likely she's not following the law.
