I'm sure you know that in Asian communities, people don't really talk aobut mentla health and grief... that's not talked about at all because we don't want to "trouble others". I think especially toxic masculinity also makes this worse. So thank you so much for your vulnterability Eric. super sorry for your loss and the rough time of it you’ve had, but it’s really cool of you to talk so openly about this. my dad and i had a complicated relationship and we stopped talking when i was in my sophomore year of college, and then one morning that year i got a call that he was in a motorcycle accident // he was essentially a vegetable for like 8 years because of the head injury he sustained, and he eventually died when i was 27; i spent a lot of my twenties feeling a lot of regret and struggling with depression and anxiety, and while i spent some of my early thirties (i’m 36 now) feeling angry that i “missed out” on life when things were really bad, i think the time it took to process the grief at my own pace was necessary for me to now finally really be able to enjoy my life and appreciate *all* the things (whether it’s something big and cool like taking an international trip or something small and stupid like eating an edible and taking a walk outside), stuff that i think many of my friends who haven’t yet experienced a big loss aren’t necessarily able to do as easily (or at least don’t appear to be actively doing in the same way, if that makes sense) // the grief still hits pretty hard sometimes (there are random moments where i think “damn, i wish dad was here to see this” or “i wish i could call dad right now”, and i think it’ll always be like that, but i just try to take things one day at a time; it sounds like you’re doing better which makes me super glad, but give yourself the time and space to process and try not to feel guilty or bad if you feel like you’re not being as productive or upbeat or etc. as usual // anyway, this has been my unsolicited two cents and a long winded way of saying welcome back but also take it easy // ps on a lighter note i only just recently got the “teriyaki” pun for your dogs; i kept going “oh wow, what a missed opportunity to call them yaki and tori or tako and yaki” 🤦🏻‍♀️ okay byeeeeee 👋)

i lost my dad when i was 16 and i think about him ALL THE TIME. it definitely takes time to process and get through it. THANK YOU for sharing how you feel and what you’re going through. i’m glad you’re back!

I'm a recent korean newyorker and have watched your videos for the last 8 months anticipating my move to NYC. I leave this comment, not as a korean, but as an average youtube viewer, when I say that not every youtube video has to be happy or about a life achievement. People enjoy watching you but sometimes forget that you are another human being doing things, eating food and living a life. We are all people, with lives, ups and downs and I believe that you sharing those experiences is perhaps more interesting than your usual content because it reminds viewers that you are in fact a person with insecurities and downs. This is YOUR experience of life in NYC, with food, trips to the hospital, job insecurity, unlikely but very real chances of being attacked by a crazy person, etc. It being YOUR experience is what makes it enjoyable to watch. It's how YOU present NYC that people are watching. The character you have made presenting life in NYC is what people come here for. So don't feel as if you are failing in what you do because you are down. If making videos keeps you busy and let's you not think about depression, then make more videos like these. Your viewers will still support and even appreciate you checking in and explaining your life as it is.

My dad passed 8/21 and since 2007 we lived on the other side of the world from each other - only saw him a handful of times because life/work/having kids just happens. Don’t beat yourself up, your Dad would want to see you happy & thriving. Viv is amazingly supportive - you’ll get through this together. Maybe Viv’s redundancy is a sign for you both to create more content together. ✌️
