I always learn so much from these videos. Kinda comforting to see someone with so much experience still “get behind the airplane” sometimes. Also, I love the longer videos but would be happy with anything.

The attention to detail is what built your channel IMO, so definitely appreciate the shorter more detailed versions in a series. The longer format is ideal for the scenic flights - you just don't wanna stop watching those! Thanks for putting yourself out there with the good and the learning opportunities.

I think this is a great answer. The general answer throughout is “both” haha. But I agree - for scenic views, let the beauty do the talking. For drills at the home base in Texas, I like the details!

The details is what got me to subscribe, I fly a bonanza v-tail with steam gauges and planning to do the full conversion to glass like what you did. I trained on G1000 when it was brand new and have been working at converting. I love all your videos so what ever you do I’ll still be a fan. Blue skies and tail winds, thanks for sharing

No matter how small the detail or how irrelevant or obscure one thinks a bit of info is, everything is relevant when learning about flying. I have always said I would read a 10,000-page book on worms if I could pull out of it just one, single, itty-bitty gold nugget of info that would make me a better person, a better human, or a better pilot. Don't pigeonhole yourself by trying to standardize your video lengths. Your stuff is fantastic information, whether it's presented as a cinematic life experience or as a messy, down and dirty instructional video. I feel that videos of real-world flying with real-world situations allow a viewer to sit back, watch, listen, and replay over and over someone else's successes and failures to make their own learning more productive! Those are are priceless gold nuggets of info for us learners of life! Keep up the great content! Cheers!

I personally like the 30 min long videos on this kind of videos. Gives the viewer the impression they are really part of the flight completely. I also want to note the amount of improvement your dad has shown over the years on IFR flying through your videos. On this series he really looked and flew like a Pro IFR pilot including showing good CRM skills on this video by helping write down the missed approach instructions when you were busy hand flying. Great job overall!!

I'm a big fan of the raw videos, and longer is OK. In the vast majority of cases, I end up watching the whole thing. For me, the major selling point of this channel is listening to you talk through every situation. The little details add to the experience, and I love that you go over the things you did well and areas where you could have done better. Terrific content!

Josh, great content. I'm a retired NetJets pilot, and it's unique to see a panel like we had in the jets, installed in 991. I learned to fly on the often foggy, Northeast Coast - Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard... - and it was the typical 6-pack and needles in Pipers and various Cessna aircraft. Pretty much OEM. Then, it was off to the jet realm - PFD's, MFD - and what a difference. The fatigue factor was much lower. Much less eye movement, and better displayed info making a 10 or so hour day of flying less draining. If this modern tech existed back then, it would have been in there. The thing is though, after not having flown in a bit, if I did, I would feel more comfortable with the old 6-pack. It's simplicity was its genius. Everything there, albeit spread out in such a way to sometimes cause vertigo during one's scan...but yeah, those were the days for me...

To answer your question: both. I am an IFR pilot also flying a Skyhawk and I love the videos. I sit down and watch some of your longer content and completely digest it. The details are super interesting and relevant and I agree they provide great examples for pilots to study. At the same time I watched this one because it was only 15 minutes. And at times I really just don’t have the energy to sit down and digest that longer Content. So for what it’s worth, I like that you have both options on your channel. Sometimes having the shorter ones are really nice too. Keep up the good work

Great video as usual. Since you asked, I would prefer several short videos showing the details. Your videos, showing the details of flying the plane, inputting the info into navigation, radios, etc., was what got my attention and is why I have continued following you. Your checklist discipline is a reminder of the importance of avoiding mistakes. In a fast-paced flying environment, it is easy to forget or overlook something that could be a serious problem. Keep up the good work and we are all watching...

Well, I'm torn, Josh. I do appreciate many of the longer videos. But I also like the details, especially as I "learn" the new glass with you. I'm sure you are torn as you move your mind between being a cinematographer and being a detail oriented pilot who likes to teach. I can see that those two drives would conflict at times. I've been following you for years, and some of your long AND detailed videos are what I cut my Aviation 101 teeth on. But I recognize that you, in your process of growing, expanding, and refining what you want to do with your channel, you will inevitably change what happens on the channel. I feel that I, like thousands of others, are not contemplating leaving the channel. All that said, given the options of long but non-detailed versus shorter with good technical details, I'll vote for the details. Thanks for all you do for GA! And long live AQP!

Nice Job. This was my first tIme seeing you. I just finished upgrading my B36 Bonanza. 2 Garmin 275's and Garmin 500 auto pilot and a 750. I am a 13,000 hr. pilot mostly in Bonanzas and Barons with steam gages and a KFC200 AP. What a difference. I am only at my 12th flight with the new panel, but thanks to videos like yours it is all coming together very fast. Oh ya, thanks to Tony Ferrari ( good friend and instructor.)

I’m very excited for the next series! I love learning about new places to fly through RU-vid videos. I really like the detailed videos about the Garmin avionics and software doing instrument work, I learn a lot even as a CFI myself. This technology is still so new and there’s a lot of very cool features to learn about that when used correctly can really help with Pilot workload and increased situational awareness. However as you demonstrated you can also get very behind quickly with a simple mistake. Thanks for the great video Josh!

I like the detailed shorter vids - the detail in this one is fantastic - I got the pressure and the cause which is extremely helpful and both emphasizes the importance of preparation while encouraging me that IFR is also amazingly cool!!

Josh, i much prefer the detail in your videos as this helps me learn. I have been following you for years. But just because you have details doesn’t mean that you cannot have a longer video with some scenery blended in with it. The short videos tend to have so much information coming so fast its hard to absorb all of what’s going on! Thanks for what you do and continue to be safe.

I have to agree with most of the comments I read. I enjoy the longer, full (or at least, fuller) -flight videos, and they give me ideas for day or even weekend trips, but I get more out of the shorter concentrated videos. Watching you handle different situations adds another perspective to what I get from my CFI. I'm not suggesting it in any way replaces what I am learning from my CFI, but that added perspective provides more depth, and flight instruction is not one of those areas where too much knowledge is dangerous. So, thanks for both types.

Great video and demonstration of how busy IFR flying can get. You seem very fluent in the use of the avionics, you are quick, and know what to do. To try to avoid being over tasked, I always set up as much as possible long in advance. Items like getting the ATIS, coming up with a plan, setting up radios and avionics, briefing the plan, etc., help tremendously. Even if I don’t know which approach I will get, I will take my best guess and set that one up, brief it up, and be ready. If ATC changes to a different approach, then you are no worse off than if you hadn’t done anything to prepare. Also, I know you were in practice mode and hand flying, but in the real world, using the automation allows you to divide your attention a little more so you can focus on the set up and avionics. Once caught up, you can always go back to hand flying.

3-4 part series is better for the viewers probably. And gives anticipation of the next vid. Also allows you to put out more content for the same amount of filming. Seems like a win/win. p.s. one word of caution would be to insure that the content is enjoyable enough to warrant a multi part series.

Great lesson Josh. It's great to watch you two acclimate to the new panel (Very clean). I think the short form content is good for focused presentation of procedures and basic instruction. The long form can be effective for flow through different scenarios, IFR, Mountain flying etc.. And both for sharing fun aviation moments in the air and on the ground at cool destinations.

IMHO, let them run, the longer the better. I always learn something, and I'm sure others do too. It could even qualify as an AQP, we all learn something together. You have no idea how much your vids mean to an older Ex TurboViking owner/driver, it's like being there again! Had multiple strokes and forgotten so much, but not the joy of flight. God Bless you at all times. Hand flying approaches etc. is THE way to be able to do so in an emerg.

Both! Since time is so scarce for most of us, I prefer shorter videos with lots of detail. I will often skip You Tube videos based solely on the length of time. That’s not been the case with you though. I guess I embrace the word “And” instead of “Or”. For learning techniques, I prefer shorter videos with high detail. I also enjoy your full content videos, such as trip or adventure. You Tubers don’t understand that we don’t need to see the unboxing of a product, or them getting their cup of coffee.. You get it!

I remember the first time, early in flight training, when I got badly behind the plane. Ironically, on a long straight-in approach. The instructor reasssured me "that's what I'm here for!" We had a spectacular fall here in southern British Columbia. I flew enough that it was starting to get expensive...

Long time follower, current ppl student (T82). I like both formats and really there's a place for both depending on your mission at the time. Something like this video would be great in the 10 minute teaching format while Oshkosh adventures seem to be more suited to the longer story format. Watching niner niner one get tossed around like that makes me wonder how anyone experiencing that kind of turbulence in IMC can keep from becoming disoriented especially with qualifications much less than yours. Scary. Glad to see upcoming vids of you and Chelsea together. Good to know.

I love your videos, they are instrumental for me. I am in the edge to starting my process to get my private license and watching your videos allow me to have some concepts already feel natural and, though nothing is like the real deal, I love the opportunity to learn ahead of time if at all possible so, thank you very much for the effort of filming and producing all of your videos. If you ask me, I will watch either the 30 minutes with the 4 approaches or the 3 10 minutes videos, as long as we get more of this great content, is whatever makes more sense to you!

If you think back to your instrument training, you may have been taught about the PPP acronym. Perceive, Process and perform. I feel that applies to how you discovered you were getting behind the aircraft and thus a very good example of working through it. Nice work. As always, video quality is just out of this world! I like the context provided by the long-form edits. Especially when it comes to instrument stuff which I absolutely love to geek out on. Videos are no substitute for seat time, of course. But I feel like it helps me stay proficient by keeping the procedures and knowledge fresh in my mind. I also like to add little tips and habits I learn from various aviation creators to augment my own routine. As an aside, could you discuss sometime the pros and cons of dropping in more flap on short final? When I was doing my instrument, my instructor trained me to set the flaps to 10 (also a 172) and never touch them again. He said he's not a fan of changing configuration on short final. And also said that if ceilings were low, adding more flaps could potentially balloon you back up into the clouds and cause you to lose visual. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

Josh, your content is outstanding, no matter which way you produce them individually. I think for the more technical and skill heavy examples, a shorter but full video that covers every aspect of the technique(s) needed would be more beneficial. As for the videos that contain more of a travelogue feel to them like the long trip you & Chelsea are embarking on, those should be as long and cinematic as the story you're filming benefits from that kind of coverage. You have a very good idea of pacing when you edit your videos and you have an ingrained sense of how best to put together your images and words to tell your story. Stick with that, it is an important part of who you and Aviation 101 are all about!
