Here’s my perspective on a portable like this. These consoles are targeted at a very small market of buyers. 99% of gamers don’t care about having a piece of hardware like this. And high quality portables like this one are not comparable to the ones I buy from Aliexpress. Now looking at pricing, $1,200 for a custom built device like this is reasonable. Parts for a build like this are around $500 (maybe more now because of inflation). And the amount of time it takes to plan and build custom PCBs, 3D prints, wiring everything up, and troubleshooting… I can’t even give you an estimated # of hours because it’s so high. There are a lot of skills and knowledge that goes into building a custom portable. Now this specific one was built by GMan, who I imagine has this done to a science at this point, but he’s one of the few. I completely understand that $1,200 is very high and not something that 99% of people would buy, but for the small market of people that are looking for a high quality custom portable with real hardware, $1200 is reasonable.

It is not easy by any means. I'm in the process of learning pcb shortening and 3d printing atm. It is however, very straightforward and with a little time, anyone with technical aptitude and desire can make it happen. Not as expensive as one might think. wiis can be found that dont read discs but will work for this for as low as 20$ just need a few of them to practice on. The barrier of entry is kind of high given all the tools you need but once you have the tools and some donor consoles, it gets pretty affordable. I could probably make one for 250$ if im cutting corners and buying broken controllers and consoles. and smaller screens. you dont have to make a wii portable in this style. You could make it like a gameboy color with sticks if you wanted. possibilities are endless. pcb cutting isnt rocket science and neither is 3d printing. the hardest part about 3d printing is assembling the printer itself properly imo. then you need basic electronic repair skills like diagnosing and soldering as well as how to use a multimeter. Just take it one step at a time. I dont necessarily think 1200 is worth it. this guy gets that much because he is very well known and loved in the community so the demand is high.

If you spend $250 on materials for a portable, and then spent 80 hours trimming, 3d printing, designing custom pcbs, assembling, troubleshooting, etc, how much would you charge someone and still make money? If you value your time at $10/hr (absurdly low), then you’re still selling this for $1,000+ to make money. But because a custom portable takes so much time to build, most people are not actually building these in order to sell and profit. Gman is one of the exceptions since he has it down to a science.

I know this video is old but it's also worth noting that gman is the guy who pioneered this design. And then open sourced most of it. So this cheaper ali Express version is only available because of the massive work put in by gman

There's gonna be those who say it isn't worth it. I love it and I'd hazard to say this is purely a luxury item of luxury items. Personally, I'd build my own if I ever get the chance to have all the expertise and equipment necessary. Otherwise, this is just a beautiful piece of tech hardware and dammit it looks stock. Great job to all the bitbuild modders and G himself. Absolutely beautiful

It looks great but for less than 1.2K I have a true portable gamecube with the portable screen, original console with picoboot, with gba player, wavebird controller and with a portable car battery charger and you have multiplayer on the go with AV output is the best, i will do a video later about this set up i mentioned. Worth it. U have the expertise that's required to create one that's clean and premium looking. Of course if you went into any kind of volume manufacturing the price would come way down. But I like the challenge of modding what you already have and turning into something as incredible as a portable system

It’s a cool device but im not sure I really understand the market… Collectors obviously don’t want it, and someone looking to play these games on the go wont want some proprietary hardware with DIY software… especially at that price. You could get a mini laptop that could run ANYTHING or even a steamdeck for like half the cost

It's a very neat concept and I very much appreciate the time and effort that goes into these things but I couldn't warrant the price for something that's just 'neat' I love original hardware as much as the next guy but I mean.. at $1,200 USD you could buy a high-end portable PC and emulate the Gamecube with better performance than native hardware and at higher resolutions. Heck, I recently picked up an Odin for a quarter of the price and it's handling Gamecube at 720-1080p very well. No shade at all on these products or those that make them and I absolutely love the process and dedication that goes into making these but like you said in your larger comment this a is a very. *VERY* niche product.

This thing is cool, but for that price you could buy 3 steam decks, which can emulate Switch, Gamecube, GBA, PSP, and everything in between. They are also computers and can have windows installed on them and basically run any PC game. I just don’t see how the price could justify buying one of these!

GMan didn't design the interface. That was Aurelio. The big code man of the community. GMan still makes insane portables though and designed most of the PCBs used in these.

probably should point out that the case was made by Wesk and RVLoader was made by Aurelio. Gunnar built it and made some of the custom PCBs EDIT: The whole thing is a community effort

A steam deck is a third of the price (a little over with an SD) and can do anything this can do but better… and way, way more. Emulation of many consoles at a better frame rate and higher resolution… plus modern AAA’s/indies. I just don’t understand why someone would pay that much for a device that pales in comparison to what even a cheaper 200 dollar emulator handheld can accomplish. What, because it’s made super inefficiently by one man and it’s in the shape of a GameCube controller, it’s worth 5 times more than it’s actual functionality? I don’t care about how long it takes to make the product by hand, all that matters is the quality and capability of the end product, and this cheap 3d printed machine just isn’t worth 1,200 dollars pretty much any way you cut it 🤷‍♂️

With levels of portability with the steam decks, switches, and phones, of course, you can put a variety of emulators on these devices and experience all your childhood games in one device. Hell, the Gamecube version of NFS Most Wanted runs hella smooth on my phone. So no go, lol.

I honestly don't see the point.. the snes and gamecube games looked bloody awful stretched like that, you'd have to be a masochist to play the games like that. However if there's a way to show the correct aspect ratio for all the games (i realise the wii is native 16:9) then that's fine.

For 1200 bucks I'd expect this thing to play actual Gamecube discs and not just ROM's. I get that its original hardware, but if you're just dumping data onto a Gamecube shaped TV at the end of the day, I don't understand why you wouldn't just emulate it and use a USB Gamecube controller. Maybe it's me, but I don't understand these people who mod stuff like this, it's not a 'portable' anything if you have to give up half the functionality of the system in the process, and then get gouged for the privlege.

This is completely pointless. Just buy a steam deck and install dolphin (or another gamecube emulator). The steam deck comes with 512GB storage so you can literally install thousands of gc games and you can even mod them. The only appeal for this is the shape is similar to the classic gamecube controller but I don't think that's worth the price tag tbh when there are cheaper and better options

The reason for this device is you cannot emulate better performance than native hardware. Computers running windows and Linux are running an x86 processor architecture. Even the steam deck. Nintendo Wii utilizes a completely custom AMD GPU with a "Hollywood" based proprietary architecture. The dolphin team has done a fantastic job of making a great emulator but it's physically impossible even with modern hardware to emulate a computer language not natively spoken by the processor flawlessly. There will always be noticeable ticks or frame hangs that ruins the experience for a true enthusiast. There's definitely no shortage of rich nerds that want this upon their display shelf as a symbol of community based engineering and development in a form factor that is the expression of sheer will power.

I'm a huge gamer and to me that's a rediculous price. The 3d printed parts would of cost next to nothing. Ofcourse it's all in the design of them not much the printing. But if it was me I'd rather build one with a raspberry pi and a modified controller.. It's cool but not 1200 bucks cool..
