For anyone whose wondering it ended up passing emissions! I guess the work in Colorado paid off, the tech who ran it said he never sees trucks this old get such good opacity numbers and couldnt believe what I bought it for. 👍

anecdotally my 98 exploder took a while to get to operating temperature, because of the notorious thermostat housing leak in the 4.0 SOHC engine. Its a 3 piece thermostat housing made of plastic so it will leak at the seams, the bolt holes, the upper and lower as they clasp the thermostat, and so on. Because it was more or less constantly leaking coolant, I didn't realize how long it took to get to operating temperature until I replaced the entire housing. Nowadays it gets up there within minutes in the nice el nino winter far north of you. another anecdote: far before I knew much about vehicles, and far before I replaced that housing, my temp gauge would only get 1/3rd of the way to operating temp and I never realized it was an issue. I think in this case I think the thermostat had failed-safely and was keeping the engine colder than it should have been. Eventually it broke completely(or my water pump went) and I learned how to replace the thermostat and waterpump. Afterwards I noticed how it hovered over the temperature symbol on the dash and I immediately thought: hey, its never done that before... Those are my two anecdotes on your trucks operating temperature problem

Thanks! I actually did find and fix a coolant leak when I did the injection pump I guess I missed putting that part in the video. It seems to warmup better now but I need to run it more to be sure. Its also possible the thermostats stuck slightly open 🤷‍♂️

What type of mileage are you seeing now that everything is fixed? Would love to buy a diesel eventually

Still only 14 mpg 😅. However that's city, not highway, and I have a long steep canyon drive to get anywhere from my house. When I was thinking it'd be a lot higher I must've been looking at people who had the 6.5 in a lot lighter vehicles - suburbans half tons humvee's etc. This truck is about the biggest vehicle you could buy with it minus a dually, extended cab extended bed 1 ton 24' long around 7500 lb. So I guess I was overly optimistic about the mileage once fixed. The place it'd make a big difference vs a gasser would be towing, but I don't have any experience towing with this yet all my experience is with gas vehicles - used to getting 7 or 8 mpg towing with those.
