@johnny smit There is a third outcome. The helmet saves your life and you walk away relatively unscathed and enjoy a long and happy life.

@johnny smit It was a suggestion, it's Your life man, but let me throw this in, if you do survive as in a veg state you won't know and some other poor sod as to wipe your ass for the rest of your days.

@johnny smit Actually, it's a proven fact without a shadow of a doubt that helmets do provide significant protection compared to not having one. Helmets have saved me and a bunch of my friends lives in crashes/falls and helmets are actually mandatory in most of the world. Yes it's your life, but why be so selfish to think when you come off a bike or get hit you won't survive? Maybe, just maybe if you rode legal speed and got into an accident you'd survive but at normal legal speed if you fall with no helmet you significantly increase the likelihood of getting brain injury or massive road rash that will destroy your face permanently, because you can't control the way you come off a bike and might be unconscious by the time you hit the ground and will be sliding face first with no helmet like a moron. In regards to your friend, was he going legal speeds by any chance? Yes you do get hit by moron drivers, but this is just as bad in driving a car and sometimes it's more beneficial to crash on a bike than a car, as the car crumples and crushes you, where as on a bike you get bumped off away from the car.

@@jbuckley2546 I once witnessed a head on collision between two motorcycles. My friend was right behind me when a Harley crossed the centerline and hit him. He had a helmet on and suffered a broken bone in his hand. The two people on the Harley had no helmets or jackets and the driver broke his collar bone, and ripped most of the skin off the top of his head. The passenger broke her back and her orbital (eye socket). I can't say on the other injuries, but both would have avoided head injuries if they had helmets.

@Diesel Creek, I've been watching your videos for a while now, Just want to add to get a Helmet and some gloves as those 2 minimum is needed for even basic crashes/falls. I've seen many times people lose their fingers when falling because that's the first thing that touches the ground out of reaction and immediately get scraped away at even low speeds. Hand injuries will make you disabled and unable to work on future equipment and using machinery(very difficult to press a button with no ligaments on your fingers or nerves to control them as there is no muscle protecting them in your hands). Just get a pair as there is nothing as fragile as your fingers and as easy to damage beyond future recovery.

I'm old and retired now, but I've been riding since I was a young'un. I've put more than 200K miles riding back roads and highways coast to coast. For the last couple of decades I've had cruisers and baggers. I'm riding a Victory Cross Country Tour now. Bike styles and accessories are the rider's choice, everybody's taste is different. Tires should match the riding you're doing (i.e. dirt, highway, cornering, etc.). Don't go cheap and check the year when you buy them. Some have been on the shelf for 10 years. Motorcycle tires are softer than car tires and rot sooner. I believe more lights are better, both to see and to be seen. I agree that other drivers are getting more dangerous. Many are distracted and some are weirdly aggressive toward bikes. But the worst day riding is still a good day!
@46bovine

Metzeler tires, made in Germany. A good friend and motorcycle safety instructor highly recommends the Metzelers. Also, rider preference, I would and do, ride with a helmet. My helmet saved my life 12 years ago. It's up to the rider as far as I'm concerned.

I know this video is a couple of years old. I'd like to say that the bike is tastefully done right off the bat. First, put a breather on. I'd go with a round one that fits the look and also breathes well. Second, I'd recommend a set of Pirelli "Night Dragons". The wheels look nice to me. Possibly have them finished with a mix of shine and black. They accent the bike well, especially the primary cover, and spoke wheels are a PITA. Run a performance exhaust and have it dyno tuned. It blows my mind someone put a SE kit on with no air filter and straight pipes. It's a safe bet the bike hasn't been tuned better than enough to make it run. A new rear fender and Yankee Tombstone tail light would look nice Lastly, it being a Springer Softail a set of slim saddle bags to cover the swing arm would look great on it. Either leather or Duck canvas in black. Emphasis on the slim attribute.
@Granddad92
@Granddad92 3 года назад
I had a '97 Superglide and it was a great bike. On tires I liked Dunlop and Michelin. Dunlop has more sizes but both are good tires. I haven't ridden in about 8 years so there may be better choices now. I will add, tires are not the place to go cheap. I've had flats on both front and rear while riding and either one will make you exercise a sphincter muscle. Road hazards will cut any tire, but cheaper tires won't hold up as well to the heat and stress of long and/or exciting riding, like on a windy road.

That is a real looking bike, no barn sized front window, or container sized saddle bags. Worst thing with it is that its is way to new, and shiny. The noise would drive me crazy also after a while. The back fender is too short, too wide, it should follow the wheel with a tight fit. The saddle also looks like its made for someone with a big ass. :)

Or even better, a damn MUFFLER ! I can appreciate the torque of the HD engines, but NOT the noise. In my area, there was a huge demand for Harleys a few years ago, mostly boomers living their youth dreams, with straight pipies like yours. In summer, they would get around in 10, 20 packs, invading scenic villages across the province. Cities and villages responded with police interceptions, HUGE tickets $$$ for modified exhausts and inspections $$$. Now, the fad is dying and you can get Harleys for next to nothing, boomers getting too old and fat to ride. Good ridance.

Hey man, nice ride. I myself have a 90' Heritage Softail I did some motor work to to spice her up so me and my better half could keep up with all the new fancy bagger boys we ride with. Here's what I did: * Heads shaved 0.050, plus a port, polish and valve job. * Andrews EV-27 cam (great for low end torque and two-up riding) * Adjustable push rods * Squak'in Chicken coil and plug wires * Zippers Maxflow air cleaner (plus carb re-jet and tune V&H Big shots Long exhaust * Torrington cam bearing (did this because I had the crank case open and the bearing was a more common failure point of Evo engines. Might as well, it's a $5 part!) After it was all said and done, project was about $2000 in total and she's a real Ripper now! I run Dunlop tires myself, they're a bit stickier. And I've nothing but good things to say about the Zippers air cleaner - my local HD tech who is an Evo engine specialist highly recommended them to me.

Nice bike Matt, and always a dry patch under your tires. I know in your neck of the woods, the crash helmet is "advised" but man, you're worth more than the protection of a crash helmet and some decent leather pants.... remember, Jeans/Denim gives way after 15' of contact with asphalt.... just sayin'. I've got a 2013 RoadGlide Custom, but my touring bike is a Yamaha FJR1300.... There I run Michelin tires all around, gives me the biggest bang of the buck and perform just awesome. HD (as in HunderdDollar, cuz, everything from HD cost at least 100 bucks, even looking at something LOL). I've specked my RoadGlide in to a Arlen Ness bike, decent prices and great selection on everything you desire for a HD.

I did fractured my femur and 3 vertebrae spent 3 yrs with a 1/2" rod knee to hip through the center of the bone to mend it. Couldn't say that the helmet did me any good or not. But I do ride with gloves because I have scarped up the hands in dirt bike wrecks, but no longer wear a helmet. LOL Yep I've wrecked a few times but get on that horse and ride again. This is all wrong! Don't touch that bike until you drop a few thousand $ on Harley branded costume accessories. At a minimum you will need boots, chaps, a vest, a jacket, 10 bandanas, and 30 t-shirts, and they all need to be black. No helmets though. Then you need a stereo that's a minimum of twice as loud as the pipes, but make sure it can only play "music" from 80's hairbands. Finally, you need to practice revving the engine while idling at red lights. That's very important. Harleys won't run on their own, you have to constantly rev them!

Lmao I was waiting for a good comment from you.... I despise bikes with radios, totally defeats the point of riding IMO, and I’ve got 2 Harley shirts but they were given to me lol I’ve only been in a Harley shop 2 times and it wasn’t my idea. They are awful proud of their stuff, outrageously expensive!

For tires, Dunlop/Harley or Metzler (don't go too wide, as it messes up the steering), for air filter, K&N, with whatever housing turns your crank. Stay safe

Nice ride! Spoked rims look great...spoked rims are also a pain to deal with. I’d personally go with taller bars-I’m 5’7, and like tall bars- easier on the back. BUT it’s all about what feels best for you. As for air cleaner, get your forward controls first- some of the front facing cones put the intake right in the way of your knees when using forward controls or highway pegs. Also if you have the time stop by Steel City or any of the other shops in the area and throw your leg over one of the many used bikes to get a better idea of some ideas of how the customizations feel. That said, we live in a great area to ride- if you can find roads that haven’t been “tarred and feathered”, falling away on the edges, or have those “half paved” strips up the one half Of the lane.

Great bike Matt. I think flat black spokes would look great, but once again it's your bike, your choice. A lot of folks telling you to wear a helmet . Your choice.

My thoughts are...The front fender is all wrong for this bike, I would go back to the original Springer/Bad Boy type fender or no fender at all. The wheels need to have more black in them like you mentioned. I'm not a fan of the rear fender on that bike, if you like that profile it's ok but it should be narrower or the rear tire should be fatter. It's a great bike, I love my Bad Boy & believe no bike should remain stock. Enjoy!

I've discovered that stating personnel preferences in brands of motorcycles, cars/trucks, firearms, etc is the quickest way to get "flamed" in groups of otherwise pretty much liked minded folks. Despite that, I've ridden many thousands of miles on motorcycles over the years and I'll just say I've never really been a fan of Harleys myself. I understand others are though and as with all your video's I'll enjoy watching you fix this bike up the way you like it.

Maybe a little late, but I would spray the rims black with a red line near the tires. And no Horn as a airfilter. You can’t have the problem with debree on your ride. For the rest a nice bike, but nog my cup of tea. I love the old Indians.

Invest in a shop/service manual. Stealerships will rob you blind. Love the Springer front ends,but they do however,require adjustment,at times.
