Reasonable price....? VW has been overpriced since many many many years, a design that’s old, plain and boring, an Interior that seems dead, non playfull boring plain ass car that will never stand out in a crowd.37.000€ for the standard R, that comes with very few options, you would have to pay up to 45.000 € for this matchbox sized car with boring design and very boring rigid driving experience. There are waaaay better, cheaper, sexyer options out there. Wanna be a grey mouse in the grey mass, buy a Golf by al means, wanna stand out, NO VW golf.
Only reasonable if you buy an R used... I paid $15K less for a fully loaded GTI Autobahn DSG with DCC and Navigation 😉 Though, I’ll admit I might upgrade once the new MK8 2020 Golf R is released next year 😎
There’s something special about Golfs. We’ve had one in the family since I was 3 and I’m almost 19 now and it’s still going strong. There’re good at just about everything. Would love a GTI someday, would love to take one across Europe and through the alps. Couldn’t do without VW/Audi now they’re just great!
Congrats . A great example of what VW can produce especially with the Golf range. I collected and drive GTIs and VR6 in Ireland bought most of them in the UK I’m here in Nashville now and considering an R they are incredibly high priced here and based on other cars I can acquire it’s hard to justify he price tag. I had a Mk7 GTI which I loved, but had to sell it a few years ago and always wanted another. Your videos helped convince me the Golf R was the next step when the time came to get another fun car! I picked up an excellent used 2018 Mk7.5 in Lapis two days ago :-D So happy with it! The passing ability and handling are incredible! Keep up the good work with your videos!
I’m a bit behind the times, as you no longer own the Golf R, but my desire to get myself one has brought me to your videos. I absolutely love this car, and if I had any doubt as to saving, and spending the amount of money it will cost me, you have most certainly put these to rest, so thanks for that.
Love the car! Have exactly the same colour set up! My favourite feature if you haven't found it yet besides the heated windscreen, are the smart lights! Push the light stalk forwards to full beam with an A for auto and drive down a dark road! It's magic! Dips and changes direction itself depending on what's in front of you!
I bought my first car last year which was a 2008 Yaris but quickly replaced it with a 2014 1.2TSi Golf within a few months. The difference between them is astounding, of course. I've only had it a few months and I'm really loving the VW quality and the sheer comfort and stability of the Golf. My next car will certainly be a Golf R line though might be waiting to see what the Mark 8 looks like. The VW brand just feels so much more grown up compared to Toyotas offerings. That's all my car experience I've had though to be fair.
Congrats! I really want one of these myself. I'm in the U.S. and going to start looking in March for a Grey model with the DSG and I'm hoping within 3 months of looking I can find one! Enjoy it!

Luke - did your 2018 7.5 come with a reversing camera? I found an online brochure that stated 2018 Golf R’s come with the reverse camera as standard but I’m not convinced.

TTRS different league all together. I found this out one day from some lights in my manual R. By the time I was changing into second it was 3/4 car lengths ahead. It wouldn't be much different in the dsg but for that price I'd want to be smoking a R :)
Great intro into the Golf R. I’m already lining one up for next year but as a family man the boss (wife) has said it has to be the estate for ferrying around stuff for the kids but that’s ok, the estate looks mint too!

Just need tracker, after market immobiliser and anti-hijack security system for it now. Also worth revisiting your house security for when they break in at the back with masks on brandishing weapons looking for the the keys.
Totally agree with the 'dad' comments, my dad's always been a VW Golf man and it's rubbed off on me because of that, I dream of a golf R myself one day
I think the golf has got a bit boring in recent years. I think the new Hyundai i30N and Honda Civic type R are the best bang for your buck with a lot of flavour and fun
Who the hell would want to be seen in a Civic Type R? You don't need a masters degree in design to see it for what it is: a Frankenstein creation. As for the Hyundai - meh!
@valleysofneptune - What good is all that power if you can't drive it to its full potential? People get hung up on lap times when the reality is, driving fast is a talent that simply doesn't grow on trees.

i drive the same car, same color and tranny, although US version with 292hp. If you want to make it a beast, get a tune or piggyback like a JB4. I turn off my JB4 in the winter because it's not needed and general safety/traction concerns. also we don't get those seats, only option is full leather. folding mirrors are not an option. your exhaust is much more poppy than the US version, ours only farts between shifts

For me at least the manual is way more fun but slower in a computer controlled launch control drag race neck and neck on a proper race track or on the roll just so much more engaging having said that VW/ Porsche/ Audi have the best dsg's and contours to pore millions into research and development and new generations while not doing any updates to the manual but that is where upgrades come in with an updated clutch and chip they cost about the same and run neck and neck in a straight line Of course you can add to the dsg too Maintenance and replace me by cost for the dsg is quite high compared to the manual both are great though I hope be keeps the manual around as it still has a high take rate but desperately need an updated clutch shorter shifter rev matching launch control no throttle lift shifting 7 or 8 gears or "ANY" update whatsoever in like over a decade
Don't like speccing these on my cars for the pure fact of car theft. The amount of people that have there car stolen so easily because they have a keyless start car is stupid
mac daddy it’s a point. Having keyless makes it easier to steal the car. Thieves can get a device that can detect the code from the car key. Once they have the code. All they need to do is get in the car and drive off.
@@therider04 And before keyless they simply used a screwdriver and turn the ignition over. Or better yet, they would simply tow it away. Nothing has changed.

Not sure if this question has been answered yet, but what is the insurance like on one of these. I’m 19 next year and wondered if getting insured on a Golf R is achievable or do you need 2-3 years solid no claims?
hampshirephoto Cheers mate that’s good to know how many years NCB you need just glad to see it’s an ‘achievable’ car to get insured on around my age, now considering it as an upgrade for next year sometime. By the way love the spec and can’t wait for Project R videos to roll out.
19 years old on a golf r will be stupid money for insurance! You'll be better off getting a polo gti or fiesta st and upgrading to an r when you turn 25.

This car would be perfect if it had the A3 interior. I’m not a fan of the interior styling of the Golf, which is a shame as I think the exterior is better than the A3. This is why I went for a TTS
I'm very curious about the "eating oil" problem that I heard so many times about the VAG engines between the service's. Maybe you can give an info later on if it's true or not. Great choice, love the color! Enjoy!
Thats quite a generic fault not specific to this particular car (I heard the first gen rs3 drank oil as a specific example, although the latest facelift (aprently) doesnt). I have had a Golf R for 4 years now and doesnt use any oil between services. if you are considering one but are worried about oil use, I wouldnt let that put you off. ;-)
