I bought a 50s British car for under £1000 - big win or big mistake?! 

Outright Winner of the RAC Rally 1956. These are extremely under-rated and reliable cars. Please keep it looking as original as possible. I have driven one as a Classic for 40 years and it is on the road always. See you at the Standard dhows in 2025

You don’t get much for under £1000 these days but a 70 year old Standard 10 is definitely worth £1k! A beautiful and original car that looks like it has been loved all these years and if it could talk could probably tell many a happy tale!

Good on you Steph. I say to other's I know that are into old cars that if they aren't prepared for a bit of risk and unpredictability, then owning an old car isn't for them. It's the journey that makes it such an interesting hobby.

Wow. She looks absolutely fabulous. Gorgeous. I love it. She is definitely completely practical for everyday motoring. Back in the 90s I used a 1930s car as my main car (1936 Austin 7 Ruby). I even went on holiday to Brittany in France with no problems. I remember my uncle having a Standard 10 back in the 60s. I was in the car when he was on holiday in Devon. The bonnet opened, flew upwards, broke its hinges and landed on the road behind us. Thankfully the lorry that was following managed to stop without hitting it. We collected it and tied it in place, continued to the next town (Teignmouth) to the Standard dealer. They had new hinges available, and immediately helped to re-mount the bonnet, so although there was a few scratches, the car was still good for continuing their holiday. I still have my Austin Ruby, but she is now demoted to second car status. I now have a "modern" as my main car, she is only 40 years old (1983 Ford Escort Mk 3, 1.1 L). I went in her on a 2,500 mile holiday to the French Alps in May this year. I am excited for you and your lovely Standard. Great choice!

I’ve just shown this to my Mum who used to work for Standard Triumph in Canley from 1959 to 1966. She loved it !

We rescued one in 1996, totally overgrown with thorns, had to get a crane to lift it out of the garage roof! Nice cars. Well done Steph.

Hi Steph, I have a vivid memory of my dear next door neighbours taking out their Standard 8 out of their garage for a drive. It was in the 1960s and I think I fell in love with the car. The engine sound, the design and the little trafficator indicating that they were turning right. Such a delightful memory for me. My parents had a Vauxhall Viva but to me the Standard had charm and character. I enjoy your channel, and I hope you enjoy your new Standard 10!

Hello Steph, Great little car.. once you get it sorted it will be very reliable, My little story. My parents bought a 10 new in Glasgow in 1957, in '61when I was about 6, with my brother of 3 we would start very early with the rear seat folded down to a bed. We drove all the way South to stay the night at Ringwood Hampshire. The next day the car was loaded into a Bristol Silver city airservice plane at Hurne airport, over the channel to land on grass at Deauville airport, spending 2 weeks in Normandy with the family. My dad had the AA 5 star touring package complete with a box of spares, free if returned unopened. We had the car till 1963, when we traded up to a Morris Oxford. Cordialement

My earliest car memory was of a standard. In 1962 my dad had a 1949 standard flying 8, the previous “sit up and beg” shape. Either it had a wooden floor or the floor was rotten in the front passenger well. I was in the back as a 1 year old and dad was driving along in the rain. He drove through a deep pool of water which was, because of the speed of the car, forced up through the hole in the floor, it went straight over mums head and absolutely drenched me lying on the back seat. Oh how we laughed….not. A. Year or so after that he sold it for £10 and put that money, plus another £20 and bought a standard vanguard 1 saloon. I thought he was really cool as there were pictures of an identical car all over the press what I didn’t realise was that the car in the photos had been used in the great train robbery lol. It's good for people to see that a sound car can be bought, avoiding online auctions and listings on social media through good old club membership! Also, it is lovely to see yet more knowledgeable and genuine people about you to help you out too. Our next door neighbour in Bangalore in the sixties had one. He was chauffeured to work during the week (I remember the Chauffeur had a grey suit with a matching cap) but it also was used on weekends to take us kids out of the city for tea or coffee at local plantations. These British cars were mostly owned by ex civil servants who had retired. They were a nice change from endless Ambassadors.

From the perspective of a classic bike owner I do hope we all don't get stuffed by the car (and bike ) haters in the government.

Glad to see another 10 owner, bought my 1955 10 after my Dad died in 2015, as an eight was his first car and he always raved about it, couldn't find an eight at the time so went for the 'big block 10' I can see why he liked it so much now, and with 20 mph and ULEZ zones they make so much sense now. Good luck using it as a daily, think you might struggle up the hills in Yorkshire. I totally agree these cars need more coverage and to be saved and appreciated by more youngsters like yourself. Wow, what a super cute little car. I love the colour scheme and the interior is so bang on 1950s with that lovely two tone styling. The bodywork looks absoloutely incredible for a 70 year old car. Its always best to start with something that hasnt been bodged and full of filler. I cant wait to see your eveluation and repair videos. And when its done, get plenty of rust proofing into the body cavities. Id like to see a video showing how to prepare a classic for use all year round in the British weather..

Fabulous car! Mine was a a Super 10 in phantom grey PWO 48. I swapped the wheels for the higher rated van wheels, The car cornered so well cracks appeared on the originals! Will follow this project with interest.

What a wonderful choice Steph. My granddad had a Standard 10 before he had his Triumph Herald. According to my dad he bought the Standard 10 instead of the Standard 8 as the 10 had a boot lid and the 8 didn’t. He’d already replaced it with his Triumph Herald when I was born. I’ve always loved them as they have that ‘50s cheekiness to them. I can’t wait to see it at the NEC show. I’ll be following this with interest.

I had one for driving round the farm when I was 14 it was super tough the only problem i had the spring broke that holds the pin that holds the gear stick in place so you could hit a bump and the gear stick would jump out. I wish you all the best with it mine was super reliable in extremly harsh conditions and driven by lots of school kids.

Nice buy. My parents bought a 10 in 1956, ohv, 4 speed, electric wipers. Way ahead of Fords. I bought one in 1989, restored and occasionally used. These old cars make you realise how good post 1980's cars are. The old cars require much patience, especially in comfort, braking and power.

What a lovely car Steph. Unusual to see a car of this age not in black. My Dad actually learnt to drive on a blacl Standard 10 way back in 1960 when he was 33 years old. His first car was a black Austin A35 followed by a light blue Vauxhall Victor with a bench seat and column gear change. Your blue Standard Super 10 looks like it has the same blue paint as the Standard Vanguard in one of the Bangers and Cash episodes. Love the Channel BTW.

Your happiness with your new purchase is infectious! 😁 My father's first car (and the first car I can remember travelling in) was a Standard 10 which he ran between 1957 and 1963, repping in southern England for J Bibby and Sons Ltd. Fawn brown in colour, I think - but I could be wrong. The family used it for longer runs too, such as a trip between East Kent and Chester, using the Woolwich ferry as part of the South and North Circular route round London and on to the (then new) M1, which only went as far as Rugby in those days, then by the trunk roads like the A5. The trip took about 10 hours!

I think it,s great what you have achieved here , a friend gave me a car because he new I,d always wanted that particular type , but there was a catch . Keeping classics on the road is as valuable a resource as restoring the next Spitfire !

Wow, Steph, that's a great find. Mind you, I think you may have been set up by the Standard club, "Join us, join us!". BTW, the Deluxe version of the Standard 8 did have a bootlid. There was a lovely chap at Rustival whose Standard 8 Deluxe was parked in Mayfair, it was the sane colour as your Standard 10. It looks like there is a leak around the lower driver's side of the windscreen. If so, that would be the first bit of bodywork to attend to as that could quickly escalate. I look forward to the next instalment. Wishing you all the best with it.

At last! Someone covering Standards! I nearly had a Standard 10 as a first car 11-12 years ago as we thought it'd be a good idea for me to have a baby Standard to go with my Dad's 1953 Phase 2 Standard Vanguard. Didn't happen, but I still have a soft spot for these.

What a lovely car looks in amazing original condition, I remember the basic version where it didn’t have an opening boot , it was accessed by tilting the back seat forward .

Well done Steph that has the makings of a really good usable classic One thing to watch out for with these. Crank end float ! If you have any difficulty in getting it into gear check to make certain that the crank is not moving back and forth in the main bearings.

Great choice! My Grandmother had a grey Standard 10 called 'Rumble'!These are simple cars that are easy to maintain. Keep an eye on the brake and clutch fluids.

On the YT short video hinting at the 1950s car purchase I guessed Austin A35. However Standard 8 or 10 was my second guess. Good luck Steph!

My first car was a Standard Vanguard back in the 60s, and I passed my test in it . I now run a 1955 MG Magnette ZA ( for pleasure as a hobby ) . Well done Steph .....I would fit seatbelts though for today’s driving conditions. You have made a great decision. Cheers DaveH 😊

My father used to have a Standard Vanguard way back in the early/mid 60's, and growing up I always thought they were really cool! I even drove one once when I was about 10, yes 10. I larnt to drive from when I could just about reach the pedals and see over the steering wheel, I must and been 7 - really. I wouls jump into any car and drive it! Zephyr, Hillman California, Vauxhall Victor, Austin Healy Sprite, Morris Minor, even a Prince Skyway, (I bet you haven't heard of those?) and a TR3 to name a few - I was car mad! And this before I was even eleven..!! STD 10 - what a beauty! You're so lucky! "Happy Travels"...
