Hi James, great video and of course all my respect for the hard job you have done. I am in the process of buying it, but not sure after your video… Issues with this engines cost extra money although they seem hard as a rock. I am short of of money but found one at 9000€ and 230000km here so let’s see if I finally buy it. Cheers from Spain.
Thanks. Yeah its still running perfectly. I forgot to say in the video that the reason it broke in the first place was because who ever previously replaced the cam chains put the Idler sprocket on the wrong way round. So it prematurely wore the new chains out. Very nice car to drive. And a nice amount of power 👍🏻 Hope this helps your decision. Cheers
Very nice video and into details. May i ask is those chain tends to break and nneds to be replace at some stage? Eg how many milage should it be replaced. Mine is a8 4. 2tdi😊
One of the local garages had change one that the chain for the cams had broken. So I knew bottom end was good as it wasn't starved of oil cuz it would of stopped as soon as chain snapped. So I got that cheap made good one out of the 2. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Awesome video mate. Thanks so much for putting the time into making it. Very beneficial. With 315,000 kms on the clock, mine has noisy lifters, oil leak from the rear, and noisy chains. This video really helped me understand how theyre put together. Like you im a bit of a "backyard mechanic", so these videos are super helpful. I think i might try to take the engine out from the top though. From what you saw, how difficult do you think it would be to get out from a wiring / gearbox point of view? Also - did you use a workshop manual or something similar?. I assume youd need to understand torque settings etc. If so - would you mind poitning me in the direction of where to get it? Cheers.
Hi . Thanks for watching. Glad its of some interest to you. I think engine would come out the top no problem. You could even remove the front and just pull it out the front. Torque settings wise just had a look on my friends auto data for the important ones most of them I just torqued in my head 🤣🤣. Hope it all goes well. Let me know how you get on or if you need anything. Cheers
Forgot to say wiring wise. Best to leave engine loom on until you have it out of the car. There are 2 ecu's ither side of the scuttle panel. Take wipers off and panel. You have to cut the security plate off the one ecu to get connector off or try and remover shear bolts if you can. Cheers
Mate it’s an absolute night mare lifting out the top. I understand not having the hoist but you have to get round and separate from the trans it’s so so much easier dropping them together. If you do decide to push on and give it the the Cistercian removal please video it !
Hi. Yeah maintance wise definitely the p38 so much more simple. The amount of pipe work on the audi engine is nuts. Every thing has water running through it . But drivabiltiy wise its got to be the audi. So much more power, torque and comfort. Thanks 👍🙂
Hi James, just watched your video. Well done and thank you. Can I ask roughly how many hours it took you to pull the engine out? Justcabout to take mine out for an exhaust manifold gasket leak, might as well do the chains while it's out
Hi thanks for watching. Hopefully it can be some help along the way. The engine out part wasn't actually to bad. Abit more difficult doing it on the floor. But probably 3-4 hours to get it all out. Everything is very heavy so keep that in mind 🤣. Something to note there are 2 ecu's for me the one on the passenger side had a security tabe over the connector that I had to cut out the way. Other than that it was all straight forward. Yeah definitely worth doing the chains. I might need to drop mine out again soon as one of the turbos is abit smokey. Good luck to you buddy. Shoot me a message if you think I could help in anyway 👍 cheers
Hi James, out of curiosity, how did you time your camshafts when you put them back in? had you marked them before your removed them? I made a cradle to hold the camshafts to the carrier when I removed them off the head. As long as I kept the gears meshed together I "should" have been able to just bolt the carrier and camshafts back on.. Somehow I have lost my timing.. I fear it may be a trip to the dealership with camshafts and carrier in hand to get them to line it up in their jig and put some reference marks on the gears so I can line these back up when I reinstall.
Hi. The timing marks for the cam shafts are on the opposite end to the gears. The slots should align with eachother. So that you can put a peace of flat metal across the face of the head and into the slot on the cam shafts if you know what I mean? I just did mine by eye because if your are one tooth out you can see it clearly. Let me know if your still struggling and I will try take some photos of the other engine I have in bits. Cheersfor watching 👍🏻
@@jamescollett3746 ah yes! Thanks heaps for that. I watched a vid of someone using the alignment tool after I messaged and saw that the ends were just aligned with horizontal holders in the slots.
@@jamescollett3746 that is my intention! I have been quoted ridiculous price to be fix by workshop, so I’ve been googling to find what is my best option on removal as I don’t have a hoist. Lucky to come across your vid to inspire me to give it a go! Thanks 😊
@@jamescollett3746 No harm intended I underestimated your situation poor fellow mechanic 👨🔧 All I can say is you are a good sport for putting up with my humour. I was happy to see you happy about the outcome with the engine. Hope it gives you many years of hassle free driving. Your video actually inspired me not to give up when times are tuff. Thank you James I hope we both had a friendly laugh together. 🙌
Hello I have an audi a8 2006. 4.2 tdi, I have a problem, the car shuts off while driving on the highway. the engine turns over healthy but does not start. with the help of the start spray, it starts for a few seconds. the computer gives a camshaft sensor error. I replaced it with a new sensor but no progress. do you have any idea what could be the problem. fuel?? thanks for the help of course.
@@jamescollett3746 thank you for the reply. I'm asking because I have one in my scope and it is a 4.2 v8 tdi just like yours. The owner just told me he hasn't done the chain cause "it doesn't need to be replaced" 🤦♂️ the vehicle has 160 000 miles.. so I'm looking at how it is going to look for me if I pick that one up
@@jamescollett3746 also I have a question that maybe you know the answer. I have seen a few 4.2 v8 tdi listed for sale, some write 540 torque others 800?? And not only 1 🤔 I know there is the v12 pushing 1000 torque but I haven't found any on a reasonable price. So my question is are there different 4.2 v8 tdi's or this is a modification that some people do?
So as far as I'm aware all the 4.2 v8 tdi are the same. I have seen alot that have had a re,map for extra power. Also if your just doing a chain replacement then its not to bad of a job once you have engine out. For me most of the work was swaping everything on to the next block. It is a beast of a car though. If you do end up buying one I dont think you will be disappointed. 👍🏻
Good question. I'm not sure if you can get it out without removing the drive rod. It took the drive rod out first as I already had engine out. But definitely worth trying to get it out before you take engine out because it might be possible. 👍
