I think to people that know what's actually possible with astro images it adds another dimension. But to photographers that don't usually shoot astro they tend to dismiss it as something that's not natural because we can't see it with the naked eye. It's usually landscape photographer's that have problems with it. But I ask them this "do you see the effects of a 10 stop filter?" That kind of gets the cogs moving a little.

Excellent shots! I always wondered how a wide field shot would look with narrowband imaging. Taking Flat frames is a life saver when you realize your sensor / glass Is just a mess

This was the first video I've watched of yours and I was very impressed. I'm a visual observer with aspirations of starting astrophotography. In that regard your videos are excellent, you are calm, clear, and do a great job of articulating the excitement and anticipation of astrophotography! You also explain the technical aspects of each step of the process very well, even someone like myself who understands astronomy and has no personal astrophotography experience. I think this video was great and I enjoy seeing these objects under different filters, thank you!

i think the h alpha is the most important step you can do in astrophotography. you go another level with it. go shoot the cygnus area, ngc 7000 and around sadr, deneb and enjoy the show

As if I didn’t want an astro-modified camera enough as it was!!! Personally, I love the extra Ha... I’m always so impressed (and slightly envious) when I see nightscapes including it with a cool foreground. Looking forward to some more of these images from you now!

I have just moved over to cooled mono and H alpha is just amazing ! The amount of detail is just phenomenal!

I love these images. I find it fascinating that there are so many different ways to enjoy the night sky. Naked eye, binoculars, camera, smart phone, and different filters. My telescope arrives soon, i'm hoping to enjoy some clear skies.

Your last remark about how these pictures would look to people who don’t know anything about astrophotography was spot on. This summer I shot my first star trails images and when I shared it with family and friends most of them did not know what they were looking at. I had to explain to them what the pictures were about and how they were captured in order to understand what they were looking at.

Those photos turned out great especially like the Nightscape with the Orion Nebula. I would be really interested in seeing a similar photo but taken with just a full spectrum camera no filters.

Very good photos. I find the wide field one, with those red clouds of nebulosity, pretty amazing. They are not strange to my eyes. This is how we would see space if our eyes were more sensitive. Well done!

This is really cool stuff! Thanks for explaining all these so clearly. 1 question, can you do time lapse videos with this? I'm guessing no. That last image looks really cool but it's a composite with the sky filter, and the ground un-filtered, isn't it?

I think you can get the same result using an L-enhance filter if you discard the G/B channels. The L-enhance is 12nm HA (more like 10nm), but you can get a RBG image out of it that's not too far off from natural color if it's processed right. I've messed around with mine a little, but have never really used it strictly as an HA filter to add data to an existing image. The Horsehead nebula picture I took with the L-enhance filter in Bortle 6 looks very similar to yours after adding HA data to the RGB. I think the main difference is mostly the star color, but its not too different after using star extraction and then processing the stars and nebula separately.

My first thought at that last image was "Damn that's pretty, but it would frustrate me having people not knowing the techniques/astro side of things asking about the weird red lens flares or something". That being said, I love the shots and the work with the filter! Looking forward to more!

Alyn, as the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... that being said, for me I like to stay as much as possible closer to what we "could" see, and a subtle integration of HA+RGB so the pink/redish doesn't take over the image... but then again, that is just me.

That looks amazing, Ive have a dual narrow band clip in filter from STC, haven't used it as I always shoot on a new moon. I need to get around to getting an astro mod camera to pair up with all my sony lenses. Getting the Canon Ra and a lense is too much $$$, wished sony made an astro dedicated camera to compete with the Ra

Have you taken a look at lens performance with this kind of clip in filter? Things like aberrations and sharpness? It will probably be pretty close, but by putting something in between the lens and sensor I'd expect some kind of additional refraction. You would have to refocus, but it would be interesting to see a delta between with and without the filter.

Night scape images are always cool to see, and are much more accessible for the average Joe to replicate. I have seen a couple of these recently, and I love them. I think they will start to be done even more because they add perspective to the size of the things astrophotoraphers shoot. For example when you tell someone the Andromida galaxy is 6 times the size of the full moon people are like yeah ok and their eyes glaze over. Show them a picture comparing the 2 and watch their jaw hit the floor.

Thanks for vids :) ps - the wide field RGB+HaRGB images I feel would have a limited appeal to those who have some understanding of what they are seeing or at least are curious as to what they are seeing. I think the average punter on the street would find them strange. That said next I have said punters in my company I'll show them your image and see if I can get some uninfluenced opinions.

Thanks! All clip-in filters, or any filter placed between the lens and sensor will shift the focus point inward. The lens will now focus sharpest on stars with it set well inside infinity, perhaps at 6 m or thereabouts. That changes the optical performance of the lens, usually for the worse. Lens aberrations are designed to be at a minimum with the lens at true infinity. But with the focus shift introduced by the filter the aberrations blow up, so corners look awful. Some third party lens adapters can do the same thing - adapted lenses can perform poorly compared to when they are mounted natively, at least with some third party adapters. In either case - filter or lens adapter - the severity of the aberrations varies with the lens and its design, but is usually worse the wider the lens and steeper the light cone. Clip-ins work fine on telephotos and telescopes with narrower light cones. I saw this demonstrated well in a filter test Peter Zelinka did a couple of years ago. The problem isn’t the filter itself but where it is placed and how it changes lens performance. Filters over the front of lenses make no difference to focal position and lens performance. But that’s not practical / affordable for narrowband filters.

Incredible images! Do you get much periodic error with the star adventurer when doing deep space? What percentage of subs do you usually keep /how much do you end up throwing away? I have the skyguider pro and find that I end up throwing away quite a lot at longer focal lengths.

I have a full spectrum X-E1 which I use for infrared photography. I'd love to give this a try, but I think I need a budget hydrogen alpha filter that's half decent because that's quite expensive.

In answer to your final question: Anything we shoot at night is going to be an exaggeration of what the naked eye can see. Thus, I at least, approach these shots with a sense of wonder at what is out there that the technology can reveal. The same applies to telescope images and even macro photography.

you can use a plug-in called star net to remove the stars from your hydrogen alpha images and it will make blending your photos much easier, better on star color too as Ha degrades the star color a bit. still great image
