I recently bought a nature homestead in the backwoods of Quebec, where I hope to attract as much wildlife as possible.
Join me as I conserve and manage the land, explore the forests, and search for all of the wildlife that lives here. There's a lot to discover and much to do over the coming years. I can't wait to see what shows up!
The two charities I'll be donating to for the month of January are:
Help People ▶ Feeding America: feedingamerica.org
Help Nature ▶ Audubon Society: act.audubon.org/a/donate-stepped

I love this! Those ponds are so good for the wildlife in the area. Some suggestions to what you could do with them: -Build a shallow creek leading to one of them for added circulation and oxygen, bathing spot for birds, easy acces drinking for mammals and reptiles and for adding to the beautiful scenery :) - Make a marshlike shallow beach area with lots of vegetation for insects and amphibians to hide in. Amphibians need shallower waters in the spring that warm up quickly so the eggs hatch early and have a better chance of survival, and dense vegetation for hiding from predators and getting food. Shallow planted areas are also very good for filtration and oxygenation. - Plant more plants! Water lilys can sit both in the deeper and half shallow parts and help with excess nutrients and hiding spot for animals in the pond. I'm not familiar with the native plant species there, but the more the merrier. Both fully aquatic and marsh plants. Since it's so deep it won't get overgrown easily. Try to plant them in the bottom instead of planters for a more natural look and they'll be able to spread out. - I'm not sure about introducing fish or crayfish to the pond, maybe just some small minnows like you said that won't disturb the balance too much. Any bigger fish might eat the tadpoles, insects, plants and ruin nursery spots and scare off amphibians. And with amphibians thriving they'll feed the birds and other predators around the pond. I'm sure you'll do wonders with this place, I look forward to following the process!!

I was so pleased to learn that you and your partner were able to buy this land, especially so in that you are taking it over from hunters, returning its focus to supporting wildlife rather than exploiting it. What you were able to accomplish in your last two endeavors was so impressive and inspiring, I can't help but think you'll be able to do exponentially more in your new home. Congratulations. I look forward to watching your progress.

hunter's provide 60% of state wildlife funding, yet only account for 5% of the US population. you would be hard pressed to find someone who cares more about the long term health of the environment than those of us who continue to live off the bounty of nature. and more to the point, to live is to eat and to be eaten.

Good initiative man. As a child (I was about 5 yrs old) we had a small cedar acreage on Vancouver Island. I absolutely loved the feeling of all the old trees with streams and dense forest. Long story short, we moved to New Zealand when I was 7, now I'm 50 but that feeling of the cedar forest had stuck with me and at the age of 45 I bought a 45ha hill with the pure goal of reforestation and facilitation for natural New Zealand ecosystem. Sounds like a similar path you and I. My job mostly consists of weed control and pest control - New Zealand has many imported invasive weeds and pests that will obliterate the native biodiversity. It is a grueling project, but it makes me feel good. Good luck with it.

Warning for the pond: adding species (fish) is totally different from encouraging new species to come by adding flowers for examples. I'm always concerned about introducing any specie in natural areas. BTW, I suppose that you choose local flowers species for your meadow of course. 2 questions / suggestions for your ponds: A. Could your ponds become shelters for seasonal migratory birds species? If yes, what can you do to help them during their journey (probably same kind of initiatives than the ones you took around your small pond) B. Do you have bats during spring / summer seasons ? If so, you could add bat shelters on the roof of your towers and/or in some trees. They are mostly endangered species.
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro Год назад
Definitely plan to setup bat boxes around! I'll be curious to see which birds migrate through this spring/fall. Once I have a list, I'll be looking into habitat to setup to help them on their journey
Год назад
as for myself, I realize how important bats are in our ecosystem back in 2013 when I was backpacked in Costa Rica. I visited the Bat Jungle Tour created by a known specialist Dr. Richard K. Laval. "While bats account for nearly a fifth of the planet’s biodiversity, more than half of the known species have unknown or declining populations" Anything you can do will be great ✊

I think with that much land, you have to decide whether you'll be helping injured wildlife or not. It's very likely some of the larger animals may need medical care, as is the way of nature. It's up to you whether you let things take their course or get involved, but if you do choose to get involved, you're going to want to talk to the local wildlife protection charities and figure out what you're going to do the first time an injured lynx starts hiding under your porch.

Salut! I'm in BC and am envious of your setup. I got a couple suggestions/ideas/ambitions. 1)Making your meadow: I really liked your standing/sitting blind. The thought occurred that you could do something similar for your meadow. Set up something between a hobbit house and a bunker so that you can maximize your sights while keeping it unobtrusive. 2) Around Costal BC we have a TON of wild birds that go nuts on local berries, you might want to get some native berry bushes set up and planted. On one hand it can attract bears, on the other hand if it's sufficient distance away from your living area they'll also attract birds and other critters. 3) Consider using a small portion of your funds used for charity to also go into bird seed for your feeders, use your views to keep the birds fed.

I'm truly interested in living more in this way but currently still at university, so the steps I take are restricted to my balcony. Seeing where you're at and what you're creating gives me a lot of drive and hope at steering towards my own future. Hopefully you meet many more people with whom to enjoy what you do and love - wishing you the best for this projects and the ones to come!

This is phenomenal! There's just so much potential for wildlife. I am genuinely very excited for the number of species you would attract and would photograph. I would personally like if you could set up habitats for all the different types of animals so that it can become a property teeming with wildlife. All the best!

Wow, look at Sparrow! I watched your pond video & was so appreciative of all you had done for conservation in your area & taming a feral cat that could have devastated the bird & wildlife population was the cherry on the cake.. To see her so tame & loving indoor life warms my heart!

I am so excited for you! I’ve been looking at doing exactly this for my next home or play area so here are some of my thoughts based on what I’m planning to do and what you asked: For the hunting blinds, I would absolutely put feeders high up in nearby trees so you can photograph out those higher windows. Or put owl boxes as you’ve said. I would definitely build a 2nd lower level to photograph any mammals or birds going by. Or, you can get some help to take the legs off those stands to ‘lower’ the top part to be a photography blind. Something else along the line of bird feeders is finding roadkill and putting it in front of blinds. Sounds macabre, but the road kill won't go to waste. The same thing will happen, just not on the road. You'll attract all sorts of predators like wolves, coyotes and birds of prey. It's wouldn't be like baiting because using bird feeders is along the same idea - you're providing a food source. Trail cameras are also what I would deploy next to start getting some mammal patterns. Those will change now from the spring in the summer, but some of those trail cameras take great video. OR, go the extra step and create camera traps with dslr/mirrorless cameras. Those captures some high quality photos. For trail cams, I use GardePro from Amazon, under $100, batteries last long and the quality is great. I would look for solar options as well (I’ve been looking into those instead of using so many batteries). Bird feeders! YES! Set those up all over the place especially near the blinds. It will attract predators too. You’ll be able to get some great grouse mating and chick video. A friend of mine had a ‘gang’ outside his place. I’ve yet to photograph them, but he sent me iPhone photos of them all puffed out. The pond: I would take your idea from the home built pond and see if you can build a blind at eye level. Or, build/buy one of those floating hides. I know the pond is deeper so you might not able to touch bottom, but could be huge. Or maybe even use a kayak built with a hide. Merry Christmas to you and your girlfriend!

Thanks so much, Brian! So many great ideas in this. You share a lot of similar ideas that I've been thinking about, so it's great to see someone else confirming and adding on to them. Keep 'em coming!
