I bought a 1982 Honda FT500 new out of the crate in 1984. Drove it for 5 years when I was in college. Last 4 of S/N were 1770. It was a great little 1-thumper. Hardly any oomph, but great gas mileage. Loved that bike. It is immortalized on film parked outside a diner in an early scene of 'Point Break'. Only place I've seen it.

as someone who owns an old Helix, i can tell you there are days I choose to ride it over any of my other bikes, it is so much fun and comfortable, like riding a 60mph lazy boy around town.

As a helix owner after many years of "real" motorcycles, I can tell you Craig was the most comfortable on this trip.

I love seeing the Ascot getting attention. My old man has his 1983 FT500 and I've ridden so many miles on it on the bike and in the saddle myself. I took my motorcycle license tests on that bike. Still runs to this day.

Being able to ride a new 40-year-old motorcycle is like a world of time tunnels. This is a dreamlike event, and I envy you. I think Honda engineers who have already retired from active duty are pleased.

Having been a teenager in the 80's i have a special place in my heart for that era. My first bike was a 78 Suzuki GS750E. I will always love the classic lines of a UJM.

I am way more excited about the Honda Helix than the Ascot. I wanted one of those SO BAD when I was like 16. My first bike (when I was 27, was a 1984 Honda Interceptor 500, but to this I would still love to have a Helix. Modern scooters just look like smaller versions of existing bikes, but the Helix looked like a futuristic transport. Nostalgia for the win.

I bought that exact bike in 1983 as a 1 year old holdover. $1,038 brand new. Loved it, got me hooked on motorcycles.

The version of this Ascot 500 was just sold as a Honda FT 500 in the U.K. . It had a twin port 4 valve single OHC engine . I had a CB 250 RSA with a 250 version of the same engine ,it was more popular seller than the FT 500 as it handled & quick for 4 stroke 250 single at the time . The FT were regarded as a slug for a 500 cc reported to have issues & never sold well in the U.K. ,they usually ended up being bought used by riders on a budget looking for cheap utility hacks to spanner & get about on . I doubt If modern bikes will last as long as some of the old Honda models 👍

As an owner of a different 80s Honda I would tell you there are probably 100 different little rubber things in this bike that need replacing! Especially the brake piston seals. Good luck, ride safe.

This was my first motorcycle! My uncle gifted me one he had in his garage as a gift for graduating from Coast Guard officer candidate school almost 20 years ago. Wish I had kept it, fueled a life long love of riding! I was missing a side panel I could not find at the time. Brings back memories of wrenching with my uncle who is no longer with us and we miss him, he sported a rad beard!

I have a 1982 Honda GL500 Silverwing Interstate (with a complete spare set of plastics). I love showing it off to people (even tho it's currently down with a bad case of old) and pointing out how ahead of it's time it was. Epic bikes from the 80s.

God I love the 80's aesthetic. That bike is gorgeous. We all love flowing curves but sometimes geometric lines just hit the spot.

The ascot was a common bike back in the day, they came in red black white and I think in the gold wing yellow. I graduated from high school in 82 and went to college and in 1984 I went to work for Honda from 84-2010, I will say this everything Honda made cars motorcycles scooters lawn mowers to weed eaters everything they made was well made and well engineered, to this day I own Hondas from car to my 2007 ST1300, which is my favorite bike ever, I ride it everyday. I really enjoyed this series from bikes and beards. It brought back the grand memories of the 80s

Love seeing old Honda's. I honestly don't think you can kill those bikes, little bit of maintenance and they'll run forever.

I had a red FT500 like that one and loved it. I gave mine away when my Wife and I adopted a little girl. My new daughter was a different ethnicity, so it was obvious that she was adopted and had somehow lost her first set of parents. I wanted to reduce the chance of her losing another father so I decided to give up risky hobbies like motorcycling and hang-gliding. She is grown now and I own a Z400 which is almost exactly the same weight as just as maneuverable as my old FT500. The FT still looks better, though.

FT500 Ascot= XL500 in street clothes... They used to make an equalizer kit to 'air charge' the forks. You started by removing the valve stem cores, then attaching the common line that had a 'common stem' with one line to right and the other to the left fork. It tied both together with its single to dual-feed inlet, to boot, you could upgrade to get the one a small gauge on the 'deluxe' version. VERY easy to do a homemade version. Do NOT OVERFILL or risk blowing those fork seals out and it will piss out fork oil all down the outside of the lower fork LOL. I'd keep it >8-10 psi MAX.

I was so excited when I saw the Honda Helix. I bought my first bike and it was a Helix. 1992 brand new and I managed to find the original Kenwood stereo that was made for that bike. I had a custom paint job and the sissy bar with the pouch on it. Stupid me, drove it from Brooklyn New York to Tennessee in 1993. Never again. That was a long trip. My first night when I bought it was February 2, 1993 and I drove it home to West Islip Where I was living at the time. It was starting to snow that night by the time I got home. When I drove it around the house to park it in the back porch where my entrance to my apartment was, I slid on the snow covered grass and hit the above ground pool in the yard. All I remember was ice and water landing down on me and I left a big dent in the side of the pool......which I kept quiet about. Lucky for me the property was shabby looking and by the summer, the weeds grew 4 feet tall covering the dent in the side of the pool. The landlord's wife decided to take out the lawn mower and cut the weeds down. When her husband came home he saw the big dent in the pool and beat his wife up for mowing the mower into the side of the pool. She got the blame for it. As for me, I bought a whole new nose and put the parts together and installed it on the bike. No one knew I hit the pool till this day. Well, I guess now everyone knows.

I fully restored a 1983 Kawasaki Spectre 1100D BECAUSE I flew in the USAF as an AC-130 SPECTRE Aerial Gunner. The bike runs AWESOME and in many ways is more fun to ride than my 2008 HD Miller Lite Special Night Rod...Go figure...LOVE the 80s Bikes! Awesome video guys!

I have ridden bikes since 1964. I have owned 19 motorcycles. I've had Harleys, Hondas, Yamahas, Kawasaki's, triumph and a few odd Italian things. Through the years I've always believed and still do that Honda makes the most reliable motorcycle. It may not have the rumble or the moniker but they will last. Oh, yes I've had a Suzuki or two also.

I was 14 and had just gotten my (New Mexico) M/C license when this bike came out. I wanted this bike so so bad.... love seeing it!

Watch the valve cover on the FT, they tend to weep. There is no gasket (by design). IIRC it's because part of the valve train is mounted in it and a gasket would mess up the clearance. Also, the kick start from an XR500 supposedly fits but the FT head does not have the compression relief port machined.

I remember seeing four of these lined up in a row on the showroom floor of my local Honda dealer...loved the early 80's Honda's. I bought a brand new CB900F that same year...great bike!

A good Helix has been my dream for a decade, sadly there are just a few in my country and even less in good condition. I still find it alluringly beautiful today. I was a kid in the 80s and I can't even imagine what would've been having one in those years!

Watched the entire video, just finished it. The high five at the end and Sean saying, 'We made it home, NO PROBLEM." is a testament to how tough Hondas are. I have a 1991 Honda Accord LX 2.2 that I'm putting a turbo on and gonna "sleeper surprise" every car on the road between towns here... I have a Honda powered pressure washer, a Honda powered 2" semi-trash water pump for irrigation on the ranch, and I've had Honda motorcycles when I was young. Only 3 words describe Honda: Tough, tough and tough.

Back when I lived in California I bought my Honda from the dealership and would pick to ride in this shopping center parking lot and do doughnuts and figure 8s. In this shopping center there was a mechanic shop and this guy (can't remember his name) used to see me doing that and became friends. His dad owned the shop and he showed me a 1969 Honda. It looked neat but it was kind of different than today's bikes. The clutch wasn't on the handlebars and other different features. Not motorcycle related but 3 years ago I bought a vintage mountain bike frame because the color and style was the same as a mountain bike I used to have. The challenge was finding vintage parts or similar new parts. It's awesome that mountain bike looks so much like my old mountain bike.

My Dad had a Honda Helix and he rode with us on the interstate and kept up just fine. I have a Honda Reflex 250 now besides my 93 Heritage and it is a lot of fun and cheap transportation. It will cruise at 70 all day.

Of course it'll make it 350 miles, & it'll do it without breaking a sweat...it's a Honda...even after 40 years, it fired right up, because it's a Honda...& it needed minimal work outside the actual assembly, again, because it's a Honda...I love my Hondas...I love their just turn the key & go dependability...I also have a moody Road King, & while I do like the bike, & it's faster than both Hondas, it also requires special treatment, higher octane gas, more parts replacement, & demands a pre-ride inspection...it just can't hang with those Hondas for dependability...always develops some kind of issue when ridden on the regs...so I mainly ride the Hondas & leave the Road King for big trips...

It's great to see a clean 80s bike, I love the gauges and square lights. Turns out they look good without 40 years of grime and sun fading on them.

Just picked up a 97 honda cbr 1100 blackbird with 4543 miles ,was in a Dr's collection flushed of link break system and it runs like a new bike ! Honda make some really gr8 products.

"It just fires right up man! That's amazing!" Well yeah! Do you know how many Honda ATC's from that era we found in barns or just abandoned outside and all we needed was a carb clean, a new spark plug and those beasts always started. If the CDI is good, if you got gas and a clean carb, good piston compression, Hondas always start.

I love '80s Hondas, pretty much all of them. I know today's bikes are more competent but those simple old machines are competent enough to have a lot of fun on and, to me, better for the soul. Let the flaming begin LOL!

My old man had both an FT and a VT500 Ascot at the same time when I was growing up. He loved scootin around town on both of em! His FT he mad into an actual Flat Tracker too! So cool seeing one literally brand new!

My ascot had around 12k on the odometer when I sold it in the late 90s. Apart from the header rotting at the lower bend, it was unbelievably reliable. I always thought it was strange having a twin down pipe on a single pot but it worked well and I also had the shaking problem but couldn't figure out what it was. Nice find guys and helped me reminisce my teenage years........I should have kept it!!

I live along your route home on this adventure and recognize the “Gopher” reference from a neighboring town…actually the school mascot in Pavillion NY and I’m guessing it was on or around the last day of school. Love the 80’s bike theme as I ride an ‘85 Shadow 1100 which the previous owner treated as his own child. Beautiful weather for a beautiful ride…you guys are blessed!

I’ve have always wanted a ft500 since they came out , never could afford to purchase one payments were just out of the budget. Watched them go to a two cylinder but never liked that look , in my opinion the ft500 was the coolest bike ever built . Now that I could afford one they don’t make them any longer . Over 50 mpg that’s awesome .... Thank you for the memories...

Really digging the Helix. Honda knows what they are doing with scoots. I miss my 83 Honda VF750S...They made some awesome stuff in the 80's. The Helix is amazingly comfortable, so it's great for a long ride.

The good thing about riding a scooter is that you don't need to wear gloves or any protection. Because magic! 😄

You don't know how bloody lucky you are in Murca - last week I filled mine and my wife's CB500Xs here in the UK and the total was £60 (that's $73.20 in MurcanMoney)...... at the moment we are paying the equivalent of $9.23 / US gallon. So forgive me for not having much in the way of sympathy for you!!!! Other than that, great video, guys! Always loved the FT500 (Ascot name not used in the UK) - along with the SR500, XBR500 and SRX600....

I would love to have either one of these especially with the gas prices being so high!! I never would have thought that scooter would go 70mph!!

The shrader valvles on in the fork caps on most of those bikes were actually for bleeding the air off the forks. I had several bikes back in the 80's, early 90's that had them. Over time they would build up pressure and you had to bleed it off. I will not deny adding 5-10 psi to them helped the ride. When I was in my teens, riding street bikes and thought I knew everything, and my dad was wrong, I would add air to my forks. I did this to get them extended all the way and stiff so I could pull wheelies easier, since the bike no longer had to raise the bike the length or travel of the forks before it started pulling the front wheel. Needless to say it actually made the bike have a slight chopper look since the front was raised up a little more and I kept blowing out fork seals due to too much air and pressure in them with no room for it to expand and contract a pocket of air plus the fluid, lol.

NGL, I love your channel and the energy you guys bring, I dont know much about motorcycles, I went to college for automotive tech, and dont know much about carbs along with starting to ride 2 years ago. but my dream would be in a position that Craig is in - the accident. to have the knowledge and the freedom of being on a bike with friends that you show and the experience of riding older bikes

Glad you came the realization that riding that thing on 40 year old tires was a bad idea. Hard dry rotted rubber is no way to go through life.

I find it difficult to understand how something so nice could have been left in a packing crate to rot for 40 years unused and unwanted. There were indeed new bikes that main dealers found hard to sell, but would drop prices until they got rid of them - a friend bought a new 6-cylinder Honda CBX for a knockdown price in the early 80s after being offered it at a price for quite a lot less than the CB900 bike he originally wanted.

My dad bought me an old Honda back in the 70's to fix up. He never got around to fixing it up for me. I remember going into the old shack and pretending to ride it. To this day, I still shed a tear. Yea I know, suck it up and get over it. That was the one thing we had in common. He owned 2, Harley Davidson's. A police 3 wheeler (suicide shift) and a 1968 Electro-glide.

What has become of the FT500? Please do more with that great bike. I bought one new in '82, loved that bike. I dropped the triple clamps on the forks 3/4" and it really improved the handling. I also put a White Bros. Stage 1 kit on the engine,(header, Supertrap exhaust, carb jet and K&N air cleaner),... all of which improved the performance and lightened up the bike a lot and made it super flickable. I put Fox Shocks on the rear and new springs and fluid in the forks all set up for my weight. I could go on & on. I wish I never sold it! Bye the way,.. in May of '82 it cost me $2,350.00,.. too much but for a dirt biker like me it was perfect street bike once I made a few changes.

I bought that same model and color new in 1982. One if not the worst motorcycle I have owned in 53 years and at least 25 other bikes. The air suspension was fidgety and the skinny forks flexed at speed but that was okay because the vibrated so badly at 70 mph only until starter motor clutch quit working. The starter motor clutch failed so much that I became an expert in bump starting.

This was my first street bike, I bought it used in 1992. Rode it everywhere. I ended up selling it the guy skipped out. Years later a shop called me that they had it and ir was abandoned by the customer. He offered it to me for 200$ but my newlywed wife sad no, still regret not buying it

I'm just in love with both of those bikes man I was born in 1972 so I watched all these bikes come out and it was beautiful when they came out and it's still beautiful now not to mention that Honda makes bulletproof engines the last year a good 150 to 200,000 miles granted you service it 😁

I had a 1982 Suzuki 750 GSE. It was awesome. It had anti dive forks, adjustable valving on the rear shocks and 16 valve heads. And a nice comfortable seat.

I had one of these for my first and only bike. Exact spec. Missing it bad, never got to ride it thanks to the previous owner stripping the spark plug threads. Took it apart, never had the chance to finish it. Was so happy to see this just to feel in some way like it was mine being put back together and on the road. Time to keep an eye out for something neglected.
