In preparation for this year's $1,500 "Grandma Goes Rallycrossing" challenge, Jake purchased a 1998 Volvo S70 T5 with a manual transmission - 1 of just 361 for the 1998 model year and a rare car nonetheless. The best part? His 1998 Volvo S70 #T5M has nearly 300,000 miles on the odometer. Follow along as he introduces the car and goes on a brief test drive before the challenge.

Robert, I am dealing right now on a 1999 Volvo S 70 AWD Turbo with 72,000 original miles on it. It is a one owner, and I'm going to pay a fortune to get it, but I have to have it. It is almost due for a timing chain and water pump. But the air and PCV system seems to be in great condition. I can't wait to add this car to my other two Volvo daily drivers! : )

I’m From Ecuador and sometimes its difficult to find original spare parts in my country, i have to import From Miami, but all is original. Thanks for the video!

My baby was sitting outside my friends house for about 5 years. I finally saw the owner outside 2 years ago on my birthday. I asked her what was wrong with it and did she want to sell. It was her first car, she had a baby. She wanted an Odyssey so she made up some issues so her hubby got her the van. It was plugged PCV and I fixed it while she was at work before I drove it home for $200.

I have something cool and rare to share and it's installed on my modded C70 T5. To help you guys out on the rotors. You have the 280 and 302mm rotors but there was a 3rd big brake kit option not many people and even dealers knew excisted for the P80 platform. You could buy the insanely expensive OEM 320mm police car upgrade. Big ATE one piston calipers mainly used on Audis, OEM Volvo pads and 320mm OEM Volvo rotors. This was fitted with Volvo OEM brackets. Problem is all of this stuff is discontinued. I had to disassemble the brake system and measure my rotors and pads since nothing it available anymore. I did 3-4 days of comparison with mostly Brembo blueprints. In the end after a lot of research I ended up installing parts and also had to adjust them to make everything fit. Since I'm on the track (Nürburgring) with this car I wanted a performance upgrade on top of the 320mm BBK already. I installed 320mm EBC GD rotors of a Volvo S60 P2 model, Audi 200 Ferodo DS2500 Pads which I had to modify and motul RBF 600 brake fluid. Nothing compared to the stock system. 👍

In regard to the clutch catch point and iffy shifting: for what it’s worth, i recently bought a 260,000 mile V70 and it had the same issue. I replaced the MTF fluid a few days ago and it’s made a huge difference, especially with engaging 1st gear. If you’ve got the time/means to have that done, I’d recommend it. Make sure you use Volvo MTF. You only need 2 bottles and they’re about $17 each. You’ll also want 2 new copper crush washers ($0.20), a fluid transfer pump (

We are a two Volvo family. Back in 2016 I bought an immaculate one owner dark blue 1997 Volvo 850 GLT automatic with 65,000 original miles on it for just under 4K. It is my wifes daily driver and now has 140,000 miles on it, and runs and looks great. After I bought that I found a silver 1998 Volvo T5 m just like yours for agaqin just under 4K in Iowa. It was also a one owner with 101,000 miles on it. Today it just turned over 145,000 miles and got a new timing belt, water pump, thermostate, front seals, and brakes/rotors all around. The interior is dark charcoal and in great shape as well. The car is totally stock except for a KN drop in filter.orsIt is running on new Pirelli tires as well. I decided to buy a 3" downpipe and open up the exhaust soon, along with a short ram cold air intake. Then I will buy a chip for it as well. It is a blast to drive as I live out in the country and get to stand on it now and then. My redline shifting speeds are 35 in first, 65 in second, 90 in third, and 130 in fourth! At a 70 mph pull in third gear I walked away from a Subaru WRX on the highway. The kid looked at me (a 64 year old man) like WTF? LOL! I subbed you to keep an eye on your cars progess, great vid!

@@OutMotorsports that they are. Be careful on any Volvo to have the PCV system replaced every 60 to 80,000 miles or so. They clog up faster if driven short trips of just a few miles. As opposed to highway miles which they last longer. I do the glove test. Take off the oil fill cap, and put a flexible plastic like medical glove over the fill spout threads. Then start the car, and the glove should suck in slightly toward the engine if it is working alright. If the glove blows up all 5 fingers, the pcv system needs replaced (not cheap) but necessary. I let mine go too long awhile back and it blew all the oil seals out of my T5.

I have the exact same car, with one exception. The VIN comes back as a manual, but it is an automatic. Same colors, with 72,000 miles. I have owned it since 2008, third owner. The interior of yours is is great shape for the age. Mine drives like new - suspension is tight. I am glad I watched this, as it dampens my enthusiasm for trying to change it to a stick as this point. I don't believe it would be worth it.

Enjoyed your review of this car , i think for $1500 you bought a gem , bought a 98 V70 T5 with only 121,000 Kms that has very rare suede inserts in the seats in Oct. 2019 , after owning a V70 20V N/A and a V70 GLT the T5 certainly drives with gusto when given some throttle and time to get over the lag awesome economy on the Highway If driven sensibly , Cars of this age Must be serviced if the maintenance hasn't been kept up! if not costly repairs will eventuate age wearies the consumables , Volvo's are very underrated cars by others that dont know whats lurks under the hood

I bought a 98 s70 t5 manual last year. Was a 1 owner car with 195k. I immediately started modding it. At 202k i spun a bearing and decided i didnt want to let it go. I bought a 2004 c70 2.3 hpt motor with 60k for $500 amd swapped it myself. Have a modified ecu to run the vvt cam. It now has a hybrid turbo with a billet td05 18g wheel on methanol and makes around 380bhp and over 400 ft lbs. Ive gone through all the upgrades. 3" dp 2.5" ss catback, front and rear strut bars, 468cc injectors now maxed, a 960 v6 maf now maxed, a dw200 fuel pump, poly mounts, poly subframe bushings, snabb rip kit and fresh air pipe along with intake manifold spacer, has new radiator but still running the stock intercooler. 302mm brakes with brembo rotors and pads. It is a blast and i plan on keeping it for a long time.

I'm a local NoVA Volvo enthusiast as well - I own a 1993 240 wagon and a 2000 NA V70 SE wagon. Both are manuals (5-speed) and both were purchased from their original owners by me. If you are seeking a low-cost but high-quality independent repair shop in NoVA that specializes solely in Volvos, I would highly recommend Swedish Import Service, which is in Fairfax, VA. My longtime mechanic, Mr. Mark Weisman, is the proprietor and sole mechanic at the shop. Tell him that Mr. Rosales referred you. He loves working on - and discussing - all things Volvo, whether old or new.

Hey Jared, the event took place a few weekends ago by now. Rallycross is very low-risk for any sort of wreck, though it does add some expected wear to bushings and balljoints. The Volvo did really well and was super happy in the top half of the revs where the turbo and whiteblock can really sing! Someone's flying in to purchase the car and road-trip it halfway across the country to their hometown this weekend. In the meantime, enjoy the rallycross video linked below, hopefully you can get whatever you own out to an event like this and experience it firsthand! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LYamGZM1sso.html

I have just inherited one of these from my father in law T5 spec full cream leather ( looks like new ) same colour 70k automatic. its been sat in a garage for 3 years never turned a wheel The battery is flat ... do I boost start it and take a chance on old fuel and cam belt which is original so 24 years old and counting ? Or do I get it recovered to a Volvo specialist and pay the price to get it up and running and keep it

My '98 S70 T5 had 72k on the odometer when I did the 1st timing belt change a month ago. The belt had NO cracks. It was a bit stiff. One pulley was worn - the serpentine tensioner. replaced the other pulleys but they felt fine.

I hate that I'm part of the problem why old school turbos that are good up high don't exist anymore, but this car is absolutely not fun to drive in my opinion. If it's something I have to ring out to get power, I'd rather have something NA. I was honestly impressed with the braking, however.

It's not fun to drive in a city environment. Rallycross, however, was a RIOT. All the boosts.

So in retrospect, the manual is rare but doesn't necessarily add much to the driving experience. It's not bad, but it's not insanely great either.

it's killing sleeper, faster even todays 3.0 liter turbo BMW 5 series, it has same engine with 850 T5-R which won BTCC 4 years consequently. Just apply BSR software tuning (which was Volvo authenticated tuner these days) take 320 HP and smoke them all. I've C70 T5, V70 T5, 850R, S60R, Audi A6 C7 3.0 TFSI, T5s smoke Audi ;-). Your T5 should be checked, T5 goes good also at low rpm

Yes, Volvo imported 361 S70 T5s with manual transmissions in 1998. Total import of T5M for the three model years they were here (1998-2000) was about 633. Volvo confirmed this several years ago and production details for the S70 T5 and V70 T5 (and V70R) can be found easily if you Google.

@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 3 года назад
Nope - rallycross doesn't ruin anything! We believe in driving cars hard as they're meant to be driven, maintaining and fixing them, and doing it all over again. You'll note we had an epic time at our rallycross, the Volvo survived aside from a quickly-fixed split coolant hose, and the car has since been sold to one of our members in Texas. He road-tripped it all the way there with no issues at 298k miles and has since fixed all the little leaks and issues. Runs like a top.
