I'm writing as I watch this. The rear deck lid was slammed just as you guessed. It needs to be replaced. The rust is typical in the lower rear just like you showed.The lower front fenders usually have the same problem as well. Replacement rust repair panels are available from Moss Motors. The top was installed incorrectly by someone who didn't know what they were doing. It's been ruined and needs to be replaced. There should be a rubber seal at the edge of the frame where it joins to the windshield. The top replacement job has been totally screwed up. Unfortunately, your car doesn't have overdrive. The overdrive switch would have been on the top of the gear shifter. You've got the original Zenith Stromberg carburetor with the automatic choke - a very problematic and troublesome carb. Part of the air cleaner is missing. (I see it sitting in the trunk. I don't see it installed and hope you didn't throw it out.) Smog pump has been removed. It's a 4 cylinder 1798 cc engine. The engine has been detuned and all the smog equipment turned it into a 64 hp underpowered car that can barely get out of its own way. It has 3 wipers because two wipers didn't wipe enough of the windshield. I think, by USA law, British Leyland had to add the third wiper to get the cars into this country. Earlier cars only had two wipers. You can buy the missing right front center wheel cap from Moss Motors. I've worked on MGB's for decades and own two, a 1968 and a 1977. I do all of my own maintenance, for what that's worth.

I was thinking about this little MG I saw on YT named Goldie Locks?... Don't take this the wrong way, but these cars usually turn up here in Wa for $300- $500,w/ titles, non running but complete. Thinking someone would actually pay $4,000 for these blows my mind. Maybe, but I don't see it. 4k could buy me a classic Firebird, maybe a Dodge Charger. They really are cute cars, but $4,000, that's a lot of money. That would buy me another tow truck.
@DiaryofaGrimReaper
@DiaryofaGrimReaper 3 года назад
@aranphor I get the appeal MG has. It's a fun little car. But it's not a $4,000 car to me. In my mind I could buy 4 $1,000 RUNNING MG's at that price. I get that it's a classic, I get the metal bumpers were more desirable.. But if I'm spending that kind of money, I want something that can get me in a little trouble. I could buy a Corvette, Porsche, a built Jeep, something with guts, something with balls.. On Bainbridge Island it's rich people and new money yuppies, they all have to own Volvo.. I don't get it. It's the Island thing. And of course when they get stuck.. They buy their way out of it. They are the rich, they are above everyone else.. And if you're a contractor, you feel it as they watch over your shoulder, telling you how to do your job, and looking for ways to compline and get it cheaper. Point is, some people have money and they don't have to care. I own a wrecker, so I get free cars all the time. And I see values differently anyway. We don't pay real prices on cars, we pay scrap prices on the metal. Because realistically, I can pay $100 for that MG, take it to scrap and possibly make $150 on it. So if it can be saved, I would rather do that and sold for more, I would rather do that, but I'm not going to sit on it. Real estate is not cheap. Space is limited when you have a tow truck. That MG pretty as a pig, I think is capped at $2,000 tops. Because here, I CAN buy them $300-$500 each... I have never seen one here with metal bumpers, their all faded plastic. To each their own.

@@DiaryofaGrimReaper I would buy all of them from you if I could then. Here in Sweden you get a rustbucket with a trashed and rotten interior for $3000. Edit: Oh you own a scrapper, if you can get cars for that price then ship them over here and Ill sell them for ya. American cars with v8's go for 10k minimum regardless of the condition if it's running. Where in the USA are you located?

I just finished your video. Great job Craig. That car would have looked rough to some people but it's in amazing condition and thats why after cleaning it you got top dollar. You brought the real condition to light. Back in the 1980's many were not in that nice of a condition. But always fun to drive. I had a stable of awesome exotic cars but loved cruising these cars. I had an awesome Fiat Spider I just loved. At the same time I had a drop top corvette and I have to say i had lots of fun driving the cheapie. I have a few hot pieces these days and buy and sell here and there but the c7 is my favorite now. the C8 Corvette is ok but after driving it a couple months It felt numb next to the muscle of the C7 so I cashed out of it. Great video and awesome job. I always jumped in with our vehicles as you do. No matter how many dollars you have there's nothing like being part of it and you showing your skills. Never lose the hands on or you will become numb to the business. I WOULD GIVE THIS VIDEO TWO THUMBS UP IF I COULD!

yeah a PERFECT car for a coed to get back and forth to college, or to work after school, etc. You can drive all week on $10 worth of gas. Pop out to the store to buy milk or ??...... A friend has a 1967 (I think it's a 67) air cooled 911 and it only has 65 hp and he loves it. It's his go to car to get to work in the summer. If something breaks? you can fix it with a screw driver and a pair of pliers. He owns an import car garage and he's built a super seven that he does autocross with and restoring a 308 GTB ferrari. But just for pure analog fun? goes to the 911 every day.

How did you go about matching the paint colour ?

That was a complete score for sure! You could likely have tripled your 'roi' soon enough. I got into MGB`s couple yrs ago & discovered a real admiration for these little autos that are such a blast to drive and now possess 3, all rubber bumper car which are much more affordable. A $2,5 `78 roadster is my daily driver & I love the fuel economy as gas is now $10-gal in Canada. Others are `75 project car & an untitled `76 parts car. My `78 only has a single electric fan and also overheated in slow traffic. Tried a number of remedies inc plastic mechanical fan from the `75 car to no avail. Final solution was additional radiator from the `76 parts car to make the `78 a dual-radiator car. The "inner" `76 rad has the cap conveniently on top vs on the fender-mounted surge tank for the outer rad which I wanted to retain for it`s working thermostat fan. It was an easy fit...got hoses that matched basic shape I needed, cut to fit,& clamped `em down. Haven`t even seen the gauge go over the halfway-mark since. Oh ya, I ditched the my daily`s troublesome Stromberg & run a long sidedraft Weber + header but the `75 will keep it`s dual SU`s. Priceless fun!

I sold my 72 chrome bumper earlier this year. The chrome bumpers ran up to 74 and had about 30 more hp than the rubber bumpers. The rubber bumpers were taller as well. All thanks to the american regulations. If you find a chrome bumper, they are worth more, but still not expensive cars. I sold mine for $10,000 which was a pretty good price for it. Sold it in under a week on Facebook Marketplace

Rubber bumper does not equate to "junk" - the earlier chrome bumper MG's are simply more collectible. Your auction special was unmolested and mechanically solid with relatively good sills and great paint. Yeah, it's easily a $4,000 car. Simple fix on the trunk and you could have put it on the lot for $5,500 all day long - especially with the approach of warmer weather.

The late RBBs are junk. Worst years for MGB 78-80. 68 HP, high ride height, god awful bumpers, weighs 300 more than a Series 1. Sluggish pigs and handle badly.

Agree Iguana. And the distain for them is dropping with time. I just saw a vid where a guy was on the way to have his MG converted to chrome bumpers and literally on the way, he got rear-ended and the bumper and car were unscathed. He changed his mind and kept the bumpers as they were. They're designed to withstand 5mph impact. Sway bars were done 77-80 which helped with the slight height increase for headlight height US standards. There's good and bad in all years.

Just an FYI, it did not come with power steering, but it really doesn't need it. The top should have another bar that folds that takes the slack out of it. MGs are very easy to work on and have a strong aftermarket. I would highly recommend keeping it or finding a chrome bumper car to buy.

Craig: you're too used to corvettes and challengers and camaros, it's a perfect car for a young lady, or guy to get back and forth to school in, or zip off to the store to grab some milk. The back rib of the convertible top frame will pivot back and correct the sag in the vinyl. No pwr steering but no problem if tires inflated and rack and pinion lubed (the rubber gaiters or boots are usually filled w 90 wt oil). The "bonnet" is what we call the "hood". The "hood" is what we call "the convertible top". "Grind that out and repair it"; does that mean Bondo or replacing with metal? The doglegs on the MGBs are frequently rusted and need replacement.

Owned it a year, waited on some parts, then decided that taking back my family's 66 Fury VIP that I'd had in HS would be more sensible. But it was a fun car, handled well. I'd upgraded the tires from 155SR13 (78 or 80 series before they even specified) to 175/70SR13 tires and thought it looked awesome with those wide, low profile tires, hahaha.

The MGC was the 6 cylinder version, not a V8. 3 litre straight 6, with a "power bulge" in the hood. Not a bad engine for it's time, but very huge and heavy, and buggered the handling. The V8 was the MGB GT V8. Good old Rover V8, nice and light being alloy. The plastic bumper version came about because of US regulations regarding bumper standards, and the car had to be raised about 1 and a bit inches, (mostly because the headlight height was deemed to be too low, which also stuffed up the handling, and while the old 1.8 was quite torquey, US emission controls robbed it of about a third of it's horsepower. So what was about a 95 bhp engine ended up as a 64 bhp engine, in a car with heavy bumpers, that rode too high to handle properly, and combined with an auto trans, it was pretty much unable to get out of it's own way. One thing common to these things is, no matter where in the world they ended up, is rust, and I'm talking RUST. Horrible, complicated corrosion, especially in the sills, (rocker panels), which are structural components, especially vital in the Roadster, which is what you had there. A company called British Heritage, (or something like that), ended up manufacturing complete replacement body shells - that's how badly these things rusted. The truck-like steering came standard, and with 64 bhp on tap, it's unlikely for power assistance to have been an option, but who knows. Must be a ball of fire when the a/c is on, if it was fitted - seems unlikely on a convertible, but maybe the GT had it fitted, being a coupe, not a rag-top. Bit of a sad tale for what could actually be a nice car.

You,re right about chrome bumper models being far more desirable. Unfortunately all BL cars suffered from poor build quality mainly due to industrial disputes in the 70,s. Convertibles were a bad idea in Britain as at least 8 months of winter.

No power steering on these cars. I had a 1974 Triumph TR-6. I used to like driving it around Los Angeles side streets in good weather. People noticed it. Freeway driving could be scary.

Thats sweet man! They're fun little cars. There was a MILF I knew back in the day who had one of those and a porche. I've always loved them! Hell, I had an old Austin mini with like 45 horses that I loved! Good job!

The small little teardrop shaped piece with the flapper inside goes on the air cleaner assembly and would suck warm air into the engine to make it start easier I saw that that was present in the trunk when you first picked up the car but didn’t see it attached to the motor unless I missed it in the pictures. Also the car was not meant to be a 0 to 60 cutter it’s meant to handle corners and sharp roads that’s where the car is the best plus it gets incredible gas mileage. It may be low horsepower on around turns in corners when you downshift it goes great I had one they’re great cars.

Just wondering why you didn't try to straighten out the trunk lid enough so that it looked better and didn't leak water into the boot. And replacing the broken antenna stub would have been a nice touch. Nice flip and enjoyable video!

it looks like the right miles for the year but its been sitting a long time. In the business most of my life I say its worth the money. Looks like a lot of paint on it though. the original paint didnt seem thick enough to crack up. But its a a cool old car. I owned a dealership and har quite a few of these cars and most were rusted to death back in the day. That car seems to have been stored somewhere.

Selling cars has a lot to do with proper presentation and cleaning cars is part of the basics. Plus when you clean a car you have an opportunity to notice any potential defects that might turn off a would be buyer and correct them ahead of time.

My first ever company car was an MGB GT in 1990, the car was over 20 yrs old already (my boss had a few of them in different colours so i chose British Racing Green).Me and my then girlfriend (has now been my wife for 32 yrs) took it for a spin in our local park and as a youth i was showing off, right up to the point i blew the Distribution cap! I also had to sit on a Yellow Pages Book to see out the window screen! Fun car though.🇬🇧👍

What happened to the cracked paint? And how did you get the trunk bent back the right way? Wish you'd show those parts.
@fretworkband3204
@fretworkband3204 3 года назад
In dealing with the cracked paint he would have spent much more time, effort and money. Probably buffed it out as best they could. The trunk was probably held down by one man and another lifting up on it to straighten as good as possible without pounding it out or replacing.

Little challenge is to learn about MGB because there are lots in USA and the plastic bumper one is lower value because it was given the bumpers for the American Market and also some emission controls (lower power). However it should also have a 5th gear or overdrive switch, either on the gear knob or on the dash panel. You did great with that car though and good video.

When you go to re-sell, how much disclosure do you give on a vehicle like this? Is the amount of disclosure any different from a sale at another auction as opposed to selling on your lot? Those MG's can be very popular depending on the market- you might have gotten 5-6 for it in the summer....but then you'd have to hang on to it for another 6 months.
@jeffhildreth9244
@jeffhildreth9244 2 года назад
If you made a "disclosure" .. be truthful.. the car would never sell.
