It's a harlequin ladybird... invasive species that practically wiped out all the regular ladybirds I knew and loved as a kid. They're absolutely everywhere in the UK.
A 13 y-o highly modded car has a limited market wheras the A3 Quatro is probably a future classic and should sell easily so while it aint my call I'd stick to stock!
Mike England Agreed: Standard. Turbo, tidy the interior up, road test, replace broken rear diff, road test, replace that also broken rear diff, swear, and then finish off the RS4. 👍
Even though I’d love to see you do a conversation on it with more power I think keeping it standard would be the right thing to do on this particular car. A straight Audi will always sell well, modifying it will reduce your selling market especially during these times when a lot of people are watching the pennies. Either way it will be good content Dean. 👍🏽😎
The only problem I see with the bigger turbo route - if the car has been "ragged" you will putting extra pressure on a "tired" engine - Keep it standard and like the Skoda do it up!!! Good video - Best wishes Clay
@@Chris-hw4mq Pagid are factory fit for Porsche. They're the best, up there with Ferodo. "cheaping out" would be fitting brands like Eicher, DriveTEC, ECB, Ridex, etc.
@@ventouxR yes, they're very good brands too. For commuting and normal driving ordinary brake pads are good. Ceramic pads can sequel or make more noise. The reason ceramic is good is because after lots of heavy braking they take much longer to overheat, for example if you visit the Nürburgring ceramic pads would be nicer.
Agreed, there are enough videos of k04 conversions. As you said nice to see what looks like a well looked after car that's just worn out and you it seems are the man to give it a refresh!
Keep it standard.. you said your self.. it hasn't been messed with it hasn't been thrashed/lowered or anything. Personally I'd like to see the ins and outs of doing the turbo and more fault finding 😀 brilliant for the money! What year is it? You didn't mention in your vid
@@namegoeshere6638 when you tell me what 56 or 62 stands for yes it's simple. But not everyone on yt is from the UK. I'm from Iceland and living in Norway and in both countries you will have to take a look in the registration papers. But thanks for explaining this for us none UK citizens 😁
Really weird hearing the Square space advert as been hearing it from Matt Armstrong for months now. Love the A3 8P platform, the best IMO. I have both an 8P and 8V Sline. Prefer the tech in the 8V but the look of the 8P. Looking forward to the content!
I just got a 2009 A3 2.0TFSI Quattro in NZ. Its an amazing car and im lucky that it had a great owner before me and they have looked after it. I would love to see you repair and make the car look new but some cheap mods as well
Go K04 as it's OEM+. Easy and popular route for these/mk5 GTI. If you use 2nd hand parts you can do it for only a few hundred and it transforms the car.
I just bought a 2.0TFSI a month ago, exact same color and inside but not Quattro and with DSG, what i can tell is, this one isnt sline, its just aftermarket badges :) those engine are strong but they may sound dieselish a bit sometimes :) Enjoy, with a remap its a sleeper monster , and btw the crack on the armrest from the door is on 100% of them, mine too!
Think I'd put it to standard. Might just be my age but over 100k is a leggy engine to try to double it's power without stripping and rebuilding it completely I would imagine the oil looking fresh is probably because it's been refilled so often with it burning/losing it rather than an indication of care.
From a financial point of view just repair it back to standard. From a fun point of view get ringing TurboTechnics for a nice hybrid unit. Front mount intercooler and go the whole 9yds.
K03 hybrid or K04 conversion. Downpipe decat. Bigger intercooler. Ramair induction kit. Polybush it. Bigger brakes. Coil overs. Good tyres. Hit the track
Aww an old A3 I had mine for 16 years and it had 170k on the clock when I part exed it. The only thing wrong with it was rust where the jacking points were. I had to replace the throttle body in the end when the new MOT rules came in place about engine management lights. But she did me well for so long I do miss her.
Maybe get the turbo modified with a larger set of impellers and remap... So it's standard on the outside but modified on the inside? There's a UK company that does that... Not sure of the scope of it with the current turbo castings? And 4 matching tyres is always a good idea with 4wd 😊 Good luck either way 🍀🤞
I’ve got one of these but the front wheel drive and I’ve just been doing bits to keep running as well as it can. Personally, keep it standard, but do a really nice job on it, sort the interior bits, all new serviceable items incl. cam follower etc. Looking forward to this series, may even learn a few bits about mine
Hi, i think if you go down the mod route you will not get your money back, cost of spares and time. Keep it simple, replace the turbo and give it a good service and of course replace the door card and boots. Good luck
If it had less miles I'd say go big with the K04 etc...but unless you're gonna do a full rebuild--new rods, bearings and all--the engine will be too taxed. As an A3 8P lover/ owner, I think keeping it stock would be the reasonable route with this one, imho.
My son as a S3 with the same engine. I run my own Mechanics business and rebuilt the top end for him. Not easy engine to work in the car and it looks like you are going to be doing the turbo on yours. The exhaust manifold is a pig to remove a lot of bolts you can not see and the left hand side were the turbo is is almost impossible to remove and even worse to get back on in reassembling it . My advise his to drop the engine to work on it a lot easier. Good luck and looking forward to more videos.
If you’re going to keep it go k04 and stage 2+ with all the toys. Will be a great fun car to drive having had a stage 2+ edition 30 myself with 360bhp I know this well :) However a standard k03 A3 all straight and true will sell easy and it’s quick cash turnaround for yourself. More a limited market selling an older A3 with a conversion but I’m sure you already know this as you’re a very knowledgeable guy. Look forward to the next one Dean.
Don't complain about rain - we'd love some - love the sound of rain. You said how pleased you are that the car hadn't been modified, so logic says a lot of other people would think the same, thus making it harder to sell when completed if you modify or "upgrade" it. Also people like to do their own modifications to suit their tastes and desires so I'd take it back to standard, clean and detail it and you should maximise your profit, thus allowing a better project next time.
New stock turbo New steering wheel and arm rest on the door. Mini service Discs and pads Cv boot Missing undertray support tyres Valet Sell. 700 is great for all that car so you shoukd be good to make around a grand on it I reckon. Keep it stock though.
intermittent errors are because of low battery voltage on these cars. charge the battery, clear codes, run the engine for 10 mins and check codes again. then you will have a true image of which codes are thrown. i had this on my E60 BMW , on low voltage battery i had a TON of weird fault codes.
Either keep it stock, and move on if it’s not a tidy car, or if you wanna go down the modded route then make it into an S3 type replica and change some cosmetics aswell as that may help claw some money back when it comes to selling it.
From a business perspective fit a KO3 and get it out of the door, as you say there maybe other issues. From a Dubnut point of view, KO4 all the way but, it is like using £50’s to wipe with 😂
Yes, that looks like a pretty good sign of total turbo failure... I'd put it back to standard, if you modify it to S3 standard then the next owner is going to be paying S3 insurance premiums, unless they don't disclose the mods to the insurance, in which case they won't pay out if you crunch it. These were fairly popular with people who couldn't afford, or didn't want to pay S3 money and insurance, and it's likely they still are as they give a lot of the S3 driving experience at a much more affordable level...
This is exactly what I want from a car channel, I’m late to the game of mechanical interest. Lots of comments advising restoring it to stock with your financial interests at heart and I think I agree. TFSI is direct injection? If so, how choked up would you expect the valves to be? Nice project, good luck.
I would upgrade the turbo (if that's the fault's source) and leave other stuff standard. And get them mapped together up to the limit of the weakest link. You'd still get 250-260ish bhp I reckon and the K04 or whatever upgrade turbo would be running super safely, far from being maxed out.
I'd go for full on S3 spec, with scrapyard salvaged parts ( apart from the turbo obvs ) it's a mod a lot of people would like to do for a cheaper pocket rocket.
Haha you bought the same car as me! Mines Ebony Pearl, bought it for a cheap in between car after returning a RCZ THP to the finance company due to having it 3 days and the head gasket going, it then broke down 2 more times after that. Any way the A3 drove so much nicer and I’ve fell in love it so kept it! Mine has the lighting pack, auto wipers but no parking sensors. Some great content would be changing the timing chain, as I bet yours has started to be noisy on startup, Cam end seals, carbon clean from intake, pcp valve (smoke from crank case due to blockage?), upgrading the turbo to the K04 perhaps, retro fitting things like cruise control, (only needs the stalk and VCDS) lighting pack etc.
Dean, keep it standard, its worth more.I am a dealer and i hate cars that have been modified,it makes the average person wary and the cars never drive as as good. That was a good buy at £700,its a popular fast hatch and when sorted should return a good profit!
I don't like it, the windshield isn't cracked. Apart from that, the car looks in good nick so you can really just focus on the mechanical side. And another vote to leave it stock. I'd look into prepping a car to tune a bit more in depth, maybe something you always wanted to do, who knows.
Go for the k04 it will be good content for the channel. There are lots of cars with same engine and with the ko3 and I'm sure there will be a lot of people interested in watching a k04 conversion with big power.
I would probably stay stock and look to the potential to recoup a tidy profit. Availability and price of stock parts (both new and used) will avoid a hefty outlay on a car that is knocking on 14 years old.
Have to agree with the others, the upgrade would make good content but not financial sense unless you intended to keep it. If you’re flipping it, just do only what is required to make it run well and pass MOT.
100% I would recommend a balance shaft delete if you start modding i had to get a new engine because the sprocket on the balance shaft seized and killed my engine
Keep it standard, give it a good tidy up & get it running sweet, see what you can get back from it & it would be a nice cheap car for someone. 👍🏼 look forward to the engine/turbo investigation...
Nice buy!! Keep as completely standard. Do all the mechanics and interior plus a top of the range valet. Will make a great car and seems to be a little pointless modifying it when you are not keeping it and as you say you might lose money on it. Might be inteesting to see massive polish up on the paint and a ceramic coating? Cheers, Bob
I’d keep it standard as with the age/mileage increasing the power will probably cause more problems, possibly with the drivetrain and probably wouldn’t increase the value. Enjoying the videos 👍🏻
I'd go with what Keith said and go down the stock route. Modified cars in the North of England seem to be something younger chaps than me like to do but they make no money unless they are an old ford. No sense in loosing money unless you want to keep it. A repair video is fine by me pal,
Keep it standard. I don’t know if the Quattro system is the same as the haldex on the Golf. I’d be wanting to at least service that as I’ve known them to sometimes be iffy.
I enjoy your mechanical videos. I hope this Audi is not as much of a headache for you as the V8. I woould keep it standard and I look forward to seeing how you get on. (Also really hoping that you are able to restore the V8 Audi).
once you've determined the fix, I'd look at both options and consider which the most advantageous modified to k04 (S3) 'sleeper' spec will make it more expensive to buy and insure and will have a smaller market appeal, back to standard might have a wider market but make less money. But as modified it might stick! depends if the turbo is an easy fix or not. Or find a buyer and then give them the choice.
It must be the turbo because I had the exact same engine problem as you ! I sent the turbo to be rebuilt and had to do a major major clean of all the air intake system !!! And I had to have it Walnut blasted ! Tfsi are terrible for carbon buildup.
I think that, even though it’s fairly clean body wise, you’re not going to keep it, it’s a flipper imo. New turbo, sundries, service (poss timing belt kit?), MOT and let someone else have their fun with it if that’s what they want to do? Really enjoy this channel mate. Inspiring
i would like see you get it running again and just see cost of replace turbo etc and how to do it, great content and your just so honest with everything and just say as you see, can't szit for next part 2
Ko4 conversion; would be good to see the process , and whether the early tfsi engines can handle it... fragile at best... watch oil pump chain sprocket bolt... and the damn cam chain slap 😁
Awesome video! I can’t wait to see the next episode... I would just get it back to standard, but make it as nice as you can. Sort out the cosmetic bits with interior too!! 🙌🏼
Just upgrade to black front grill (£240 from Audi) and maybe the newer rear lights and a simple stage 1 remap transforms these into near a stock S3 approx 250bhp the k03 spools up early nice low down torque will leave a 3.2 with stage 1, S3 parts to expensive for a conversion S3s that shape 3dr not going for that much
This video is immaculate timing for me as I just bought almost the exacts same car except not Quattro and no arm rest😂. Will be following this one for sure!
Keep it stock, Maybe a small increase in power of 20% is ok(250bhp is sweet spot) but doubling the power of this engine is risky - Almost certain end of that engine.
Keep it original. That's how it was designed, and you will hopefully get some money for your time. The turbo swap is a good learning project for us all.
Another great video with some mechanic bits thrown in. I’m all for entertainment but it’s great learning when watching a professional fix a car related issue. £700 smackers seems a bargain if it’s just the turbo? In terms of mods, I guess it depends on whether your keeping it or using it for content in the channel. I would go balls to the wall on some sick mods.
Keep it standard move it on with a decent profit I've found in the past standard cars are easier to sell.. modified cars have a smaller market..but that's my opinion..good luck in which ever route you choose...
Nice project 👌 perhaps keep it stock as the rest of the engine has done 116000 miles so pushing up the bhp could find any other weak points . Stay safe mate 👍 🍺
Lovely vag project to get your teeth into. So so much potential. Very best of luck with the project! I’ve done lots of vags but I’ve started my channel with an RX8! I’ve subscribed and will follow closely 😊🚗🚗
