I bought LIVE PLANTS for my TURTLE TANK (and then my turtles DESTROYED them 🥲)

So I’ve been trying to grow plants for a year in my community tank with 2 Razorbacked Musk turtles I’ve tried alllll kinds of plants and this is what I’ve learned. If you want carpeting plants, forget about it. Stem plants…they lasted me pretty long maybe a few months but eventually they’ll be eaten as well. Best plants for turtles go with A LOT of floating plants, they’ll eat them but if you get something that grows fast it won’t matter they’ll have a nice endless supply of snacks. You will be covering the light at the surface from getting thru the tank so keep in mind how much your willing to provide shade. Salvenia does wonders. Any kind of moss forget it. And finally the best thing I’ve done so far, POTHOS, I put some in the filter to prevent them from getting to them and they grown out nicely out of the filter towards the surface of the tank, they might nibble a leaf here and they but that’s ok, and I put some on their turtle dock/basking areas cuz news flash musk turtles very rarely ever surface to bask and they been growing like a little bush. My turtle tank also has plants. My turtle honestly is TRYING to upset me wit this one. He shreds the plants, and then wont even take the time to eat them. So pieces float around and little bite marks on all the plants. So half of them are like destroyed, but they were beautiful and great. Aquarium co-op has incredible plants. Also i did use the easy planters aswell

Thanks for giving us your insight! I've tried to do this with my res in the past, but it's never worked for me either. Whenever he sees green, he immediately begins to eat. It's great because he never refuses green vegetables, but he has never let any plant (even floaters like duckweed) last longer than a day.

I have a Chinese pond turtle and it has destroyed/eaten everything that ive tried to put into the tank. The only way I get the plants to survive was to make little cages for them out of bits of eggcrate and zipties!

Love the plants! I have two turtles - both African side necks, one destroys any live plants and the other completely ignores them. Like how you glued them to the driftwood- I’ll have to try that!

I’ve been lucky with my Anubias, but crucially, it has to be on the edges of the tank-Mary Shelley the yellow bellied slider only destroys plants that are in her path, and I tie them to driftwood with zip ties rather than plant them! I hope this works for someone! Also, she only eats young plants, including Anubias. Mature Anubias is more tough and unappetizing! Thanks for teaching me so much!

My RES tears apart every plan I've put in. I love those plant bases. I got two. Now they are just in the tank for my RES to knock around and scratch itself on it. It loves destroying things lol.

I have Java Fern and Java Moss that's attached to small wood logs. Mine generally leaves the plants alone, but does like moving the logs around. Both require minimum care

Hey I saw u removed the canister filter from Hoku's tank, is there a reason why? I wanted to buy one for my turtle l, but seeing u don't have one anymore I don't think I should bc my tank is smaller than yours. How often do u change the water with no canister filter, only the normal one?

My aquarium is always a tank of native fish, like sunfish and pickerel, and turtles lol, so I have usually just gotten my plants from dipping in my local ponds and swampy areas lol but I was still wondering where you think is the best place to order plants lol?!

Before I added my turtle, I started it a bit planted with some fish and had it establish. Added him and he slowly destroyed most the plants 😂 decided to just go all out and add a bunch of Anubias and ferns and yeah didn’t last a week lol surprisingly some Amazon sword has lasted tho, he would always dig most of them up but a few he’s left alone for some reason. Love floating plants tho, water lettuce, frogbit, duckweed. He loves to snack on it so I have a separate tank growing those so I don’t run out 😂

hiii! i’ve been wanting to add fish to my turtle’s tank. i’m just wondering how would i feed the fish without my turtle trying to eat it? i have other question about adding fish to the turtle tank. i’m aware that there is a chance of the fish being eaten but still have questions that google is not answering

Good luck on your plants! Can give a tips tho' as you did with the anubias...the plants are usually more easily rooted without the cage and yellow substrate, and just added to the sand. You could still use the plant pot, just with sand instead of the cages (that I really remember the name of ) Plants usually needs a bit more light in the form of a t5 for plants...to stop the turtles one could use a LOT of fastgrowing plants like hygrophilla and such But I do hope you manage to plant some more plants; do not give up! You just need far more plants than that for some to establish😅 Thank you for sharing the progress! 😊❤

Yes I agree don’t get pets that people aren’t prepared for!!! My turtle is about the same age if not older than my 23 year old son! I tried putting plants in his tanks multiple times thru out the years and doesn’t matter what kind he eats or destroys them all! 🐢

I have a huge red eared slider and she is a plant destroyer. She can fit my fingers in her mouth and she is 12 inches long. She was a rescued red eared slider and when the first time i had her i thought she would enjoy some fresh plants. After i finished placing some plants in her tank i went to the bathroom and came back to her chewing up the leafs and spitting them out everywhere 😂 I decided fake plants are definitely the best decision but i had to get some strong ones since she actually did bite a chunk out of a plastic plant once. Your videos have helped me a bunch thank you by the way! 😅

I’ve been trying to add some plants to my Mississippi Map’s tank for awhile. I have thus far had the most success with a decent sized Java Fern that I purchase already established on a piece of driftwood, and I have also recently added an already established Anubias Nana (but with a little less success, he seems to like eating that one more). Both of them I added to his tank after a few weeks of having fake plants in there first. I interspersed the real plants in with the fake and he has mostly ignored them. Before it was just a few days and he would have them destroyed. 😂

My musk turtle ate an amazon sword, It was huge.. and about 10 java ferns. He like to nom on anything green. He even eats floating plants. I feel ya on this video!

I have never had success with any type of vegetation in my turtle tank. My sliders eat anything and everything that is put in there, only exception is the convicts which are doing great with them. It helps the tank is a few hundred gallons so everyone has room and plenty of places to hide. I get little fry in the tank all year round but not many survive so it is working great for my setup. There is 3 Rio Grande RESs and 1 Caramel Pink Albino RES. Sorry the plants didn’t work out but water turtles with the exception of a couple species destroy water plants in aquariums

Hello 👋 and thanks for the information. I’m thinking about starting a turtle 🐢 tank so the video is very helpful. I am a huge plant person. I have 7 tanks all heavily planted with fish. 🐟. What I’m thinking about doing is this-take a large tank such as a 75g. Put in a tank divider about 1/4 of the tank. In the divided 1/4 section add substrate and plants 🌱 including floaters. Then in the 3/4 of the tank would be for the turtles. What do you think? I am new to turtles and I absolutely would have to have a planted tank. This is what I’m thinking. I'm not sure if the materials the plants are stuck in inside the container are, but if it is what I think it is, you might want to remove the "sponge-like" thing, because it's bad/hazardous to the fishes and turtles. Sorry I'm being vague here, because I'm from taiwan, and I don't know the English term for the sponge thing that stabilizes the plants.

So I'm new to turtle keeping, I have 2 female yellow bellied sliders. They been in the same tank since birth about 4 months now, but one has been growing bigger while the other is staying smaller, and recently I've been noticing they swim head to head shaking their hands/claways infront of eachother. Shuld I be worried about this behavior? I'm worried they may be starting to dislike eachother? Or is this a normal sighn of playing?

I did the same with my turtles. I also bought from aquarium coop and glued some to the my driftwood and on the substrate and same result. Plants and turtles is a no go it seems like. Nice try though.

Haven't rightfully attempted it myself yet, but I'd imagine the key to turtle plants is both not desirable to eat and well established before adding the turtles

Hey everyone, I’m not sure where to go so thought I’ll leave a message here and hope someone helps, so I have a turtle a yellow bellied slider and for about few weeks she hasn’t been eating well, barely anything. And today she pooped green and liquidy, anyone have any idea why this is and what I can do to help her. i bought my turtle 2 plants, he ate both of them overnight. bought him sand for the bottom of the tank. he kept eating it. switched to small stones. ate them. fake plants? no. he eats them too. and his poop aswell.

I have turtles there names are Tur and Jasince the seller said they were both females but actually Tur was a male and Jasince was a female they are both baby red eared sliders I think they are only 1 years old.
