nah im PSP bias anyways, its whati used for about 7 years before i built a PC. the PSP freezes because its accessing the memory stick for a bit, it can chug for a bit.
i acquired a few PSPs, PS3s, VITAs after i got enough money to buy them since the pandemic. i got every model of them! i didn't have them when they were hot but i still felt nostalgic when i got them. all were bought very cheap in the 2nd hand market and some bought as "defective" that i fixed. my OLED Vita and PSP street are my favorites.
If you'd ever wanna, a psvita is another great handheld to mod from what I've heard. My friend got one two years back and she's started to play games she never had the chance to before. great vid as per usual.
@@ImHardToUnderstand hard part is the battery of a ps vita fat is very bad, and the ps vita slim just quit the OLED display for a LCD and some little storage, i think the fat version with a modded battery is the best shot, also use it with a sd2vita to get the things done, and if you can mod the charger to can use a USB-C cable it can be a game changer, because the cable for ps vita fat is a propietary one of sony, there is the video here in youtube, you can also mod the sticks of the ps vita to use joycon sticks, that are mostly the same, but you can use hall effect joysticks of joycons to have a better experience and durability, aaand i think only that, the ps vita is a very japanese handheld, specially it can run psx, psp, and ps vita games so it is pretty good, just mod the things i mentioned and you will be fine.
The freeze is usually reading the SD card, depending on the size and the type. The bigger, the more time it takes. Edit: Recommending 128 max GBs. Minor correction
@@YewfNet just letting you know that it's recommend 128gb as the max because anything higher than that can cause problems. My card doesn't have that much, but with 128gb you could have basically everything. You can fit a hundred psp games and what's left for emulators
@@YewfNet I would recommend not going over 128GB in storage, as it takes quite a while to load with just that. If 128 isn't enough, I'd say get multiple 128GB cards. Some cards don't even register & they tend to be the bigger ones.
Holy shit! Glad to see you answering to comments. I was a huge fan of your channel because of the PS VITA modding. I apologize for answering in English, but my broken Spanish that stems from my Portuguese can not keep up in writing, but I just wanted to say that your videos were great!
I am like 20 years late finding all this out but I think it's cool!!! But yeah honestly I'm very hyped to do all kinds of videos about retro gaming/tech, including some Retro Achievements videos I'm working on, so I hope you look forward to them!
It’s crazy how handhelds are still a thing. I’m 17 and my first experience gaming on a actual platform was my Switch Lite, it’s like a rite of passage for people to own a handheld at some point
Plz let me join the group of fossils here, let's cry together 😭 My first handheld was the og 3DS, like 7 years before... I still have it and play with it. Yes I feel my bones disintegrating 🤣
Got pushed this by the algorithm, Glad to hear another person getting deep into Retro gaming. I was always more into the DS as a kid as there were more games I was interested in but I was floored what was basically a PS2 was even possible with how much junk tech was floating around back then.
I bought a PSP in 2011 for just one purpose, and that was to play *Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.* And it was the only game I needed for it! Put in several hundred hours and still have it in my cupboard! Good times. Handhelds will always hold a special place in my heart.
Just kinda stumbled upon your channel here, I love the vibes. Cozy, retro gaming, feels comfy. Would absolutely appreciate more content like this, as someone just getting into the whole homebrew thing, and finding my love of retro games again, it's really cool seeing someone else into it as well.
It's just strange to think that someone with such good and well-made content could be so small. I'm happy to be here, watching you grow, I wish you all the success and a great video!!!
Couldn't tell you why this got pushed into my recommended, but I'm glad it did. I've had my eyes on getting a psp for emulation for a while now, maybe this is a sign lol. I checked out your channel and saw you're pretty new, but your videos have great quality already! I wish you the best of luck in your youtube endeavours!
I considered getting a PSP to play some PS1 games like SOTN, Parappa, and FF7 portably but decided against it, but glad you will get use out of it!! Also I am 100% here for more retro tech videos as well as retrospectives
just discovered your channel and loving the vibes, hoping to see more of your retro journey! i just started one myself (collecting all nintendo handhelds atm) and it's definetly a journey worth experiencing
The video quality is phenomenal, especially for a channel with only 3K subs! The audio quality, visuals and vibe made this a very cozy viewing experience. I expected you to have around 80~160K subs until I read some of the comments. Keep up the great work!
I can relate with your experience in Retro gaming for me I was very late to the party for Sega Dreamcast back in 2019 but perfect timing nonetheless considering it turned 25 years. The only game I have were MK4 Gold, Resident Evil code Veronica, Jet Set Radio, Virtua Fighter 3 TB, and Crazy Taxi I can say that it's okay to look back and enjoyed any kind of Retro gaming in general.
I absolutely love retro tech, I've been steadily building up a collection myself, and I'll always say that the worst thing about CRTs is that no one makes them anymore!....... And how heavy they can get-
my algorithm recommended your channel!! you're literally the type of content creator i'm looking for i myself aspire to make content like this (IM NOT A BOT THAT SOUNDED LIKE A BOT SENTENCE) and it's super nice to find someone who has that vision!! coincidentally, i'm on my journey collecting retro handhelds i've had and hadn't had during my childhood! ^^ last month i just fixed my childhood psp, so it's cute that someone out there's kind of in the same journey as me I'll be looking forward to your videos !! and support you !! and manifest that you get a sponsorship to review those emulation devices like those anbernics! i feel like it suits u !
I would personally recommend investing in the main PSP library too. Soo many banger games, from GTA, to star wars, to metal gear, you really cant go wrong
I still have a sweet spot for PSP that the Vita never filled. I look forward to some of your personal retrospectives, and you have a very nice voice. Looking forward to future videos from you.
You just gave me a formula to starting up a channel. Seeing that yours was created in August. Now I'm seeing why my own channel failed. Thank you yewf for the proof I needed.
I've been on the lookout for a PSP too, just out of curiosity, because i was mainly a Nintendo consoles owner back then, and i want to play some games i missed, like P3P, but i had no luck finding one at a good price. Great video, keep it up!
@@St0rm-fz6br I've been trying, and one day i found one at a nice price, but i had no money to spare at the moment, so when i came back it was gone jajaja.
Since you're doing it for the novelty, getting a Vita would've been a better choice, imo, since it's much more powerful and also has a second analog stick (or nub), and also front and back touchscreens. But, either way, good vid👍.
as somone who recently revived their PSP I love seeing people talk about it, it's an amazing console and has an insane backlog of games, some of which are still stuck on it
Your channel is absolutely amazing and I apologize for not finding it sooner!! Amazing work on this and your retrospectives, and I look forward to your next videos!
That cat on the TempGBA Emulator start up screen is hilarious 🤣 Love your stuff and excited for more content and Sony handhelds I LOVEEEEE the Vita but have a soft spot for the uniqueness of the PSP and the Portal isn’t really a “handheld” but I love it and consider it one! keep up the work Yewfie! Much Love 😊❤️
found this on my recommended page, and I honestly love your video style! the entire aesthetic of your channel is just so comfy! also nice video too, I plan on picking up a PSP at some point for the same resson you got yours for, which is emulation purposes. plus, it's got Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, which is one of my favourite games in the series. I played the remaster on ps3/4 in the 2.5 ReMix, but I'd love to play it on an actual PSP at some point. I currently have a modded 3DS LL that I play games on, which is fine probably, but it's a little big for retro emulation, and the dual screens are a little distracting.
I got my first psp a few years ago and I love it a lot. I always bring it to school. I bought it on buyee for only 20$ + 1 game and even tho it came from Japan it was still way less than 150$ and in nearly perfect conditions lol. If you ever want to buy games or retro consoles I would highly recommend it
my only exoerience with a psp is a childhood friend owning it and letting me play pokemon fire red on it, which was the introduction to possibly my biggest hyperfixation! so only good things to say about it from me
I actually have both the first get PSP and PSV laying around, though I never bothered to homebrew with them. I was fine with the stock official experience (games, obviously, but I also used my PSP as a very heavy music player in school and on the go). I have heard that the PSP is still a popular homebrew machine to this day, which is kind of remarkable considering its age.
When PSP came out i was working at a video game company and it was all the rage with my coworkers, but i opted for a DS instead. I dont regret my decision but the PSP just looks like such a high-end device. Even 20 years later it looks like total luxury.
I highly recommend the retro handheld route! As psp and vita owner its fun tinkering with the homebrew that's available, but handhelds fully designed for emulation generally have way more options that tend to run a lot smoother, and these days there's tons of different form factors to choose from. Anyway, I subscribed to see where this channel goes, keep up the great work!
I was randomly recommended your channel (YT recommends doing an amazing job again) and this video was so enjoyable! Watching your Pokemon restrospective now :) Looking forward to more content ahead, keep up the amazing work!
Oh this takes me back to my middle school days when I had a silver PSP 2000... playing Persona 3 Portable, Gran Turismo, Motorstorm: Arctic Edge among other things. And, although unrelated, also to when I had a PS Vita in 2022. I had sold them all due to... circumstances... but videos like this always give me a good dose of nostalgia
I understand you perfectly, I got my first 3DS in 2023 and haven't stopped playing since, I'm currently playing simultaneously Gen 1 to 6 of Pokémon, the best 40 bucks I've spent
Your avatar is absolutely adorable! Yeah, the PSP is a really good platform for both regular gaming and homebrewing, and while I still need to find and fix my brother's PSP, I kinda want a PSVita to do emulation and stuff. I also really want to grab one of those Android based retro handhelds like a Retroid or an Ambernic. Retrogaming is great, and being able to experience these games on the go or comfy in my bed is a big desire. Also, installing Doom on everything. No electronic device is complete without running Doom on it.
The slowdown on the home screen is caused by the PSP reading the SD card allocating memory. You have a 128GB SD card, which will slow down the PSP on the XMB. Should not have an issue loading a game or anything like that. (worth the trade-off) This coming from a guy who repairs these systems. I'm SHOCKED that the seller on Amazon didn't replace the screen lens with a fresh one without scratches. Also, he did not clean the stick, there's dirt all over it. I recommend lens/glasses cleaner and a toothbrush and the dirt will come off like magic. You also sadly overspent for this PSP by a long shot. 2000 models are typically sold for $90 - $105. I don't even sell 3000 models for more than $120. But being happy with it is the most important thing! Thank you for the great video! This is amazing market research and learning more about customer expectations
I remember being in middle school when I got my PSP (its died since then...) but it was probably the handheld I remember the most. I did have a DS at the time but the PSP to me had alot more games that I felt was more for a bit older audience. You had most of the turn based Final fantasy Nes-snes games, Persona 3 portable and Persona 1 remake, Kingdom hearts Birth by Sleep, Fate Extra, a large amount of shooters and platformers (some good, some bad) but it was still the console that made me a fan of several franchises I adore to this day. Seeing someone buy a PSP to give it a new life is so endearing to me. I didn't even know it could play PSone games natively :0
I remember when i bought my psp-3008 in 2008, (it was priced 8000 rubles ,and disks was 750 Ru and 1500Ru ).What a great times it was .I miss this times .
I have always wondered if i should add a psp to my retro collection, but I just don't know which model to get, I have heard that the 3000 model is the best overall because of the screens better brightness, pixel response and less glare. But I have also heard that it has a problem with scan lines and has some inaccurate colours. I have no idea what to pick. Btw I heard you had a freezing problem with the psp when you start it around 2:35. I decided to look around on the internet and I also looked carefully at your video to see if i could help somehow. I found a few things, but keep in mind, i'm as inexperienced with psp's as you are, so the things i say you should take it with a grain of salt. When you could press the button around 2:39, the orange light on the left side (the memory stick indicator light) stopped blinking at the exact same time, which leads me to believe it has something to do with your sd card being used a lot. I looked around and found a person on reddit talk about he had a 128 gb sdcard (like you) and it takes his games list a solid 6-8 seconds or so to load (He also had many emulators on). I also looked at other people with a psp 2000 and saw theirs start up with no form of a frozen screen, but people who modded their psp had a very slow startup and the memory stick indicator light was also blinking a lot. So it could be one of the downsides of modding a psp, that your sd card is too slow if you have too much on it (I don't know if buying a faster sd card would fix your frozen startup). The person on reddit also talked about a plugin where you can split up your collection so it doesn't take as long to load. It could also be the sd card not being installed or formatted correctly but it looks like you did it correctly. I don't know if any of the things I said could fix your problem, but i hope it does. Btw very good video and i like your channel, the things you talk about is also something that i love🙃👍
I literally found my old psp's a few weeks ago! I'm pretty late to the emulation party too but I def want to fix the ones I have that are a lil busted and start emulating some old games I loved as a kid! Awesome video :3
My brother had his PSP since Christmas 2008 and had borrowed it for the longest time. He burned through a lot of chargers and batteries since many third party batteries for the device suck. It wasn’t until July this year I got a PSP for myself. It was a blue one I got from a Japanese seller on eBay. I bought a micro SD card, an adapter and a carrying case for it just before going on a camping trip. I received my PSP just 4 days before going on a camping trip and brought some games to go with it. I also softmodded my PSP, added some pictures and added a buttload of music on my PSP. Been enjoying my newly acquired PSP since July.
I knew the price went up but I didn't expect $150 in 2024. You mentioned at the end that you could have got the Retroid, I'll say that you have made the right choice. Personally I find PSP buttons and d-pad much nicer than any retro console. The freeze at startup is normal. It needs a bit of time to read the contents on the memory card.
Great video as usual, Yewfie! (Also, disclaimer: Absolutely nothing wrong with Pink. It’s a very welcoming and engaging color - oh, look - just like you! 🙂🙂🙂) Also also: Not sure if it was intentional, but I love how you muttered “…DKOldies…” as though it were vulgar or offensive. And believe me, I understand WHY 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love how good the video was and thought you had 200k subscribers but was shocked to see you only has 2.1k Don’t worry I believe you will become famous and grow big❤️
I bought a PSP a few years ago and I love it ☺️ i use it more than my Vita because I just like the vibe of it more. If you’re interested in emulation I think they updated Retroarch for it recently. As for the screen hang when you turn it on, I’m not sure but it could be due to memory card formatting. If you are using a micro sd adapter there are some guides to format them for best speeds.
I got one of my own for the first time in 2024 as well! Always was jealous of them as I grew up with the DS, and seeing how badass the PSP was as a kid really left a strong impression on me. It's such a damn cool little thing, as you said the emulation capabilities are wicked neat, which I plan on doing to mine in the future. For now though I've got a hell of a big PSP library left to go through, highly recommend Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and FF7: Crisis Core, both bangers
Got my psp back in 09 or mid 2010, sadly the battery crapped out in 2018 and never got around to fixing it. The cfw is probably over a decade out of date on it by now. Emulation was never my go-to for it but the homebrews and 1st party titles are amazing, it was my pocket Doom machine for long time. I hate to say it since psp games are technically retro now but I'd recommend Patapon, it's one of the games my brain defaults to when I think of the psp
Okay, so there are a few things you should probably know about PSP modding/ ownership in general. #1: CHECK YOUR BATTERY, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS OEM. They are now old enough a lot of them are starting to swell. #2: it's not recommended to use anymore than 256GB, and I found that 128GB can also induce choice paralysis. That said... #3: this thing is an offline entertainment powerhouse. I also advise utilizing it as an MP3/MP4 player during natural disasters so you can spare your phone (I recently went through Helene, and my PSP was EXACTLY this). #4: if you aren't using a PSP-1000 model, Infinity is your best friend!! #5: the 1000 thru 3000 models can do a cell phone battery mod to get a bigger battery. You have to harvest the terminal board from an OEM battery, and there is soldering required. You also lose the UMD drive (which, depending on your use case, actually extends your battery life).
Another cozy video by Yewfie 👏🏽 Here's some games to look into that may be of any interest: LocoRoco, LittleBigPlanet, Sonic Rivals 1 and 2, Burnout Legends & Dominator, God of War and the Need for Speed games!
oh boy, you just scratched the tip of the iceberg, theres romhacks, cfw and even homebrews for most retro consoles, especially portables hell, last i checked, you could run half life 1 in a new 3DS through a port someone made for it, theres probably a couple ports like that for the psp id wager not a shill but a good channel to learn more in regards to emulation and soft modding would be Modern Vintage Gamer, so check him out some time lovely video btw
i highly recommend any of the metal gear titles or monster hunter titles on the system alot of them are still psp exclusive and have hundreds of hours of content available but if youre not into that the psp had a ton of smaller titles aswell like patapon or loco roco@@YewfNet
I don't know how RU-vid recommended your channel to me, as it's been years since I've used my PSP (almost forty now and I used mine so much in my 20s that the battery can barely hold a charge). I modded mine to run UMD Images, never had emulators on it, but wanted to leave feedback for your question at the start there. Even after this many years, the startup is very smooth and seamless and the interface reacts sharply (mine's a white one and I use the lime green interface for it), so I think that delay isn't as much Software related as it is just wear on the button pad. I remember taking it everywhere when I got it and would even use it as just a Walkman since I could easily upload MP3s to it, for people doing serious gaming I can imagine a lot of mileage went on those buttons and the joystick. Even I had some moments when I would get a bit too enthusiastic with the buttons during God of War, LEGO Indiana Jones, Wipeout or Ridge Racer. Worst offender was a Gundam fighting game I picked up from somewhere that had an all-Japanese interface, thing was so intense and frustrating I ended up deleting the image for fear I was gonna end up smashing the console on a curb or something :)))) Anyway, hope you have fun with it and maybe you can give some regular PSP games a try, they're not 90s levels of Retro yet, but we're getting there 😅
PSP has been my favorite thing to mod, play, listen to music, etc. Recently found a method to change the resolutions on 'totally legit backups' of movies to play on my psp. Currently have The warriors and the first three fast and furious movies ready to watch on a whim. Have some era appropriate music on there like deftones, SOAD, big pun and plenty others. Along with all of my games. Currently trying to find a shell to replace the oem one I have along with ordering some buttons to match the ones on the ps2 controller
Wasn't expecting to see N64 games emulated so well on the PSP, though I suppose not ALL of them are quite so slick. Still fun to see others get into retro-gaming, if we're talking PSP games themselves I'd recommend Breath of Fire 3, a turnbased RPG that exists both as a PS1-version to emulate and a native PSP-conversion. It IS a PS1-era RPG so I dare not say it's peculiarities will be endearing in the year 2024, but it was definitely very dear to my heart- had a lot of customization options for the characters as you explored the world and found 'masters' that would alter your level-up boosts and teach you new spells if you apprenticed the player characters under them, and the main character could find different 'genes' that he could combine to create a lot of different-looking dragon transformations. It also did Ocarina of Times "start in childhood and timeskip to teen years" thing that gives you a look at the world from two different perspectives, albeit without the possibility to time-jump between the two. Makes for a real bitter-sweet "the times keep coming and they don't stop coming"-type of story, appropriate if we're talking retro stuff and the passage of time and so on :)
Oh wow your channel's hella underrated! I love the cozy genuine vibes. Great video! On the topic of retro handhelds good for emulation, the PSVita and 3DS are really popular for that as well, nowadays. Coincidentally, I'm currently working on getting my 3DS fixed for that very reason. Watching the vid got me really excited for the parts I need to arrive! XD Also, nice Chao charm! :D
The psp is a fun little console, i never had one when I was little, but around a year ago, I felt that itch to get one, and now I own two psps and two psp go's (one of the psp go's is one for parts)
I looooove the PSP, it's a pretty good emulation machine, but it's also got a great library of its own (gurumin: a monstruous adventure and ape escape both being one of my favorites for the console). Also, I think your corrupted data problem might've stemmed from what folder you put the emulator in, as older/legacy homebrew tend to go in the "GAME150" folder rather than the standard one. Anyway, i really dug the vibe of your channel... definitely subbing!!
I was pretty much exclusively playing on nintendo handhelds back in the day when gaming on the go. I got one years ago to play ridge racer, monster hunter and emulate ps1 games on. In fact I got the exact same model and color as yours. I was going for a pearl white 3000 on ebay but landed on the rose pink 2000. playing klonoa, gran turismo 2, and all sorts of games is fun but I’ve also been getting a lot use from the music playback from the XMB too. I just power off the screen, lock the buttons, and jam to the music. The other multimedia features are neat in a novel kinda way. Like viewing photos, playing umd movies, or playing videos you imported to the psp. Again it’s cool you can this thing on a portable handheld from 2004, but in the present day it’s a neat novelty. But I’d argue the music playback is very nice, especially for those long commutes.
