In the late 60s&early 70s I worked for Naumann Fork Lifts in Phoenix,Az. We were a Clark Forklift Dealership. My work was to recondition/rebuild older forklifts which were traded in on new units, to be sold as used units for customers who did not need a new unit. I have experience with just about every forklift made by the different manufacturers. Don't know why this vid came up as recommended that I watch, but I did so out of curiosity. Made a couple notes as I watched. Take it for what it's worth as I am now 80 years old & may be a bit fuzzy. At 8:14 - that hose is just to return to tank any hydraulic oil which may bypass the Cup seal at the bottom of the lift cylinder, it's size is OK the way it is. At 8:54 - The trans oil should not be milky(probably has quite a bit of water in it), wish you would have changed it before you ran the unit, but you can change & flush it later and probably won't hurt the clutch packs. Dexron would be good for it. At 9:00 - That should be the breather for the hydraulic tank. It should have a very small filter element installed in there so clean air is sucked into the tank when the lift cylinder is raised. At 9:28 - There was no extra reservoir, what you are trying to get out at the end of the vid is the cap/filler. A 1948-51 Ford F100 Master Cylinder may be a crossover to your original unit. At 10:00 - You are quessing right about the year, that was the style of almost all smaller forklifts in that time frame. At about 25:00 - you quickly discovered that gravel/soft surface and hard rubber tires are not compatable. When you are looking to see what you got, pay special attention to the kingpins and the steering spider(the part where the inner ends of the tie rods connect to) as they do receive a lot of wear under normal usage and sometimes owners are derilect in lubrication duties. The engine may not be in too bad condition, depending on how long it has been run on propane. Hope all this rambling may help you out in some small way. Good luck with it. Fred

As a forklift tech don't worry about that watery oil too much yet. Most lpg forklifts if only used sparingly - especially when the engine never gets up to operating temperature are notorious for creaming the oil up simply due to crank case condensation, lpg being a cleaner fuel makes a lot of water vapour when it combusts. Also many forklift have a run for 5 minutes, stop for an hour, run for 5 minutes again ect... life which compounds the problem even more.

Back in the 70's & 80's I was a forky tech. I worked on Clarks, Yale's, Hyster's & Datsun's and of course A/C's just like yours. Out of all of them, the Datsun's was my favorite to work on. They were the best engineered and very mechanic friendly . When I saw your A/C , it brought back many memories . I feel, that just the rear counter weight alone would get you your 200.00 back. The Continentals flat head 4 & 6 cylinder engines were the best in the business as far as repairs and cost.
@seansysig
@seansysig 4 года назад
A running Allis Chalmers F50-24PS $200 is a steal. Maybe $900 (carb, master brake cylinder, brake components, emergency brake cable, tires about $400, hydraulic fluid, oil, and filters for air, hydraulic,oil) and your time. The carburetor needs removal, cleaning, adjustment, or replacing. The poor running could also be attributed partly to a lack of back pressure due to missing airfilter. Also the LP regulator might need replacing the diaphragm fails & the spring gets weak due to fatigue of the metal. I'd shorten the plug wires and verify firing order although it sounds right. I'd also pressure test the coolant system.

Hi Matt. I had an old Clark fork lift. It had such funny "rolling" sound, like yours. Four cilinder engine as well. I found out, there was nice new oil, good spark and so on, but no one ever cleared air intake. Horrible mess inside. So as I was standing on gas pedal, I was drowning engine in gas, without air. I found it by "jumping" on gas pedal in rythm "full-non-full". About yours: It has quite a high dead lift. Handy suff.

Entertaining video. The trailer unload went a lot better than I anticipated. It's not unusual to find milky oil in the engine of a forklift that has been used infrequently and only a few minutes at a time. Probably just a lot of condensation that was never burnt off by reaching operating temperature.

I picked up a F30-24PS a couple years ago for $700. It ran and drove but the brakes barely worked. Didn't look at it much when buying but when I got it home I realized the engine had no oil on the dipstick. Added 4.5 quarts to bring it up to the right level. Then I had to add two gallons of water to the radiator (didn't leak out like I expected) and the brake master cylinder was bone dry. After adding the three fluids everything works great! Been using it ever since, always starts right up. Mine was converted to gasoline sometime before I bought it using a Zenith carburetor. The mast has a lot of slop when tilting and the e-brake sticks on so I rarely use it. Otherwise a solid little unit. Cool seeing this one in detail with the same engine as mine.

When you get that 4th cylinder to fire it will be a runner for sure. How about just cutting down the cage to fit in the garage? 3" should be enough, if you still fit in the seat. Brakes will be a real help in saving things near the forks. Please change the oil asap, or get it running hot enough long enough to purge the water out. Propane has a way of creating that kind of water in oil look, they usually don't get run enough to get hot and boil of the condensation. Looking forward to seeing your new toy earn its keep. Thanks for sharing.

I thought it was interesting that the data plate said Harvey, Illinois on it. Harvey was where the mall scene in Blues Brothers was filmed--the mall basically sat empty for years after. According to an article in the Chicago Tribune dated April 5, 1985, Allis Chalmers was planning to close the plant in Harvey in mid-1986, because Deutz Corp was not interested in buying it.

that kind of looks like the old 60s Hyster I learned to drive forklifts on. it was back in 08 and that thing was a champ! wonder if its still around somewhere... I was 18 and didnt know jack about working. we had a really great forklift mechanic join our heavy equipment crew and he saw that i needed guidance, he had me watch and help where i could, I learned more in 1 year on that job than i have in a decade.

Pro tip, They make (or at least did make) a point file. It is a small metal file that is made for points. The reason I mention this is because you can bend them to get into the point easier on a car/truck. Looks like if you like you could easily cut down that cage so that you can get in the garage with it on. Nice find, and good job. Most people anymore don't know what points are even. I am sure that you will have it running great and it will be very helpful to have. Have a great day!

Loved the sound when you had it playing at double speed. Sounded like a psychotic remote controlled car
