The joys of taking the Body off aye?! I purchased a similar project, paid peanuts for a non runner 2007 Sport HSE. Completed all work with body on! Never again! Repaired both cylinder head gaskets, Oil Pump, HPFP, Alternator, Turbo the lot whilst the engine was out! Was not a job for the faint hearted, I can lay testament to that! It would have been an absolute doddle with body off but did not have the facilities to do so. Great walk, talk through video on how the job should be tackled, if I have to do it again, will definitely hire a 2 post! On inspection looking at my knuckles etc, the skin has now nearly grown back! Engine work can be done in situ but be prepared for endless tantrums and tool searching! Nothing like hearing it fire up when completed, MOT with no advisories and back on the Road! These cars are absolutely fantastic when they are Running although a bucket load of determination and persistence is required when not! You will notice more and more Sports, Discovery 3’s etc being assigned to the salvage yard due to costs when things go wrong, it certainly does not have to be that way if you are prepared for all the above! All the parts I obtained were new or remanufactured and come in at approximately a grand, give or take a few quid! A lot better than the £4000+ it would have cost if I had palmed it off elsewhere. Great channel by the way! 👌

I love all this stretch bolt stuff...Years ago I had a VW Passatt 1300cc.....it burnt a valve....now I didn't want to bother doing all the shimming that was required, a mate had a 1500cc Passatt that he was scrapping, so before it went I had the head and the alloys on good tyres, and it got my old wheels with tired tires. I stuck the 1500cc head on with the old stretch bolts....old belt and timed it up. Ran fine...and the performance was better than with the old head......That car went from Germany to the UK twice more, over two years, then I gave it to a g/f who ran it as a daily driver for 2 more years, before giving it to her son, who ran it into the ground......the engine didn't die, even at the hands of a 17 yr old....the car eventually succumbed to the rust bug.

Top tip for refitting a head. Grind the heads off a couple of the old stretch bolts, screw them into the block lightly and use them as a guide to lower the head down, then simply remove the ground down bolts and put the new ones in. Simples

Love how its all is fixed in a small garage by some normal blokes and not like for example hoovies garage where he buys the car, gives it to his mechanic, plows hundreds and hundreds of dollars on the damn car + have to pay the labor because they have infinite money and then make a RU-vid clip about it.

There is a guy on YT called 'jade Muttley' who restores old Triumphs and he does it in a lean to garage at the side of his house but man what quality he knocks out. There is another called Matt Green who rebuilds Classic Minis and he also has a lean to garage at home and an old shed somewhere! And his rebuilds are excellent. Of course he gets the 'experts' who are so called purists who know it all and slag him off. But when you see their videos they never get their hands dirty. Always paying others to do stuff. I am doing a '78 Mini and every nut, bolt, panel and weld has been done by me. On my own. Because that is where the satisfaction come from. Just as well I never meet these 'purists'..

My D3 was rotten on nearside rear arch and sill 😓 Check the crossover pipe at rear of the engine mate before the body goes back on, they can crack 😉 They're not that scary these newer landys, people are petrified of em but most jobs are diy and parts are actually cheap compared to ze Germans

Thanks so much for putting this on here-There was little chance of seeing this as it tends to be a behind closed doors operation-albeit you have a 2-poster and plenty of room. Absolutely First Class-you've dispelled some of the myths about this. Ive got the same car but a year younger and I've owned it for nearly 5 years.Always had Barretts of Ashford do the service but they started to take the mick and the warranty was £1400 a year-which, as it got to 10 years, despite the wording to the contrary-most things were NOT being covered as down to wear and tear. So I didn't renew it. Im not averse to doing my own repairs as Ive 3 other cars and lots of bikes-These cars are just entering the affordable market- and loads of people will benefit from your video!

Thanks so much for taking the time to explain things in detail! I had to change the head gaskets on my 2001 P38 Rover a couple of years ago and it was very difficult getting access to everything (in the U.S. you have a lot of emissions parts that get in the way). It would have been so much easier if I could have taken the body off of the chassis. It's great to see a video from someone that really knows what they're doing!
