mejinks1978 i know they only taking the piss every car can run and be nice if you take care and replace everything you see wrong if you don’t want any work or maintenance buy a new car
@David Hamel fair enough. I don't personally attribute cleanliness with professionalism though. Just me. For example Pepboys shops are clean but the kids they hire know nothing as opposed to smaller run places that live and breathe history of certain vehicles may not have the time to dust the shelves. I see what you guys are saying though, it's a nice shop for sure 👍
Why would he be upset? Does a restaurant get upset when customers are flooding in? I think your heart is in the right place but your reasoning is kinda effed-up
I loved my 2001 740i, got it with 74k miles and set about to replace everything that needed it. Complete suspension, guibo, center driveshaft bearing, entire cooling system after a catastrophic failure, stereo with factory widescreen NAV, grill and more I am sure I am forgetting. If you are unable to work on them yourself and only write checks for others to work on them, they are a horrible car. If you can turn your own wrenches they are the easiest car in the world to work on. Everything is assembled logically and it is the smoothest car for traveling you can own. I only sold mine because we moved out to the country and I knew the dirt roads would destroy it after two years and thousands of dollars to restore it.
“There’s basically no technology in here” ....” here You have a basic satelight navigation system”. Bro that was HUGE in 2001 what are you talking about?? Power seats, especially way multi-way power, was still reserved for very premium cars too.
My 03 540i has the later DVD-based system, still running a 2002 map. Get some nice chuckles when I drive by ENRON Center and other buildings that have long been renamed.
I love how The Wizard doesn't even want to waste 2 minutes looking at a BMW to see what's wrong with it, even out of curiosity. Hoovie takes the BMWs straight to the Ninja lol (then straight to the junkyard, I assume)
narrative is the cancer of society we are slowly working through... at the very least bmw will drop the crap and get back on the original mission. aka not failing at things they had sorted 30 years before.
@@MousemanLV my dad had a bmw 2.0d in his Avensis and it was crap underpowered, heavy oil consumption, it's a shame it replaced Toyotas own 2.2 d as that was a far better engine.
@@deedsofdecapitation7477 Right? How many views would he get if he bought a 2 year old Tacoma with 10,000 miles? Nothing is wrong with it? It just runs perfectly? Yawn
It's not unusual for a dealer to clear the codes to sell a car like this. It LOOKED like it was well taken care of, but really nobody wanted to pay for the big maintenance it needed. In walks Hoovie...
@@mightbegenius he knows very well cars, so he knows what he is buying. He just buys this kind of cara because we like to watch it, and more we watch it more money he does lol. Tyler is a very smart business man.
Hoovie,, you’re a funny and entertaining guy....your productions are so much more watchable than most of the guys trying to share their car experiences. Keep it up dude!
Car Ninja Shop Rate is $89 on the invoice. The hours to change timing guide is 21.6 HOURS = $1922 labor alone !!!!! and 6 hours for the Trans seal = $534 ........OUCH
If you watched Jr m6 video, he quotes bmw book times. M6 was officially 51 hours of work, thinks it's getting done in 10 hours complete with the extra abs pump issue they found after.
@@pencilboy34 I work at a new car dealership and that's what we charge. Granted it's Massachusetts so everything is more expensive here but we're a Japanese brand... $89 is a great rate
German plastics and rubbers in the 90s were often complete shit. The metal parts were great though! I have a 03 540i Sport similar to this one. Great car, well built, but plastics and seals are biodegrading after all these years. The good thing is that as long as you keep replacing the plastic and rubber parts, these cars will run forever.
Back around 1997 my uncle who is paraplegic had one of these adapted for him to drive. I was around 13 when I rode with him on the back and just apreciated what a great car this was and how cool it was that he was able to drive it. I even remember some of the songs we listened to that day. These minor experiences stay with you over the years and become major things. Now at 37 this is my dream car. Im looking at a 740IL that still looks great. Hope I can get it for christmas.
OMG. When I saw this video, my jaw dropped. No, no nonooonoo! I owned an E38, a 2001 740i Sport and it was a NIGHTMARE, not just a nightmare but the absolute worst nightmare I've ever owned in my life. I never thought I'd be triggered by a Hoovie's Garage video!
But to be fair, it's the only car I've accidentally (legit, accidentally) gotten a 100+ mph speeding ticket in. I thought I was doing like, 65. The car was too comfortable... when it wasn't sitting in pieces in my driveway.
Such a iconic car, in my opinion one of the best 7’s next to the E32. Timeless design. From the history to the 2pac story, it is truly one of the ultimate driving machines.
I was lucky to have owned 2 740 IL’s ... the only BMW products I ever owned. They were works of art. And the way the dash is aimed at the driver. The dampened suspension system alone was incredible.
I owned a '95 740il and it was a good thing i paid for an after market warranty. It more than paid for itself. Great car to drive. Most of the repairs were maintenance items.
@@roko-ui1dv long wheelbase 760 e38. The dream. And i love how hoovie says it has really no optional extras. Shades sunroof Electric seats. Like all the thing i wish i had in my e39
@@RandomHondaGuy Here in the US it would be very rare for a BMW to not have those. I think the shades and maybe heated seats were the only options besides the sport package
@@RandomHondaGuy Ooooooh ja das ist gut. Never heard of the 760 lwb but it sounds like a serious president vehicle 😂. Still can't decide if i like the pre-facelift headlights more than the post-facelift ones but i will be happy with any E38!
"This time I got a good one". 20 years old, deferred maintenance and repairs, headliner drooping, obviously knackered suspension, check engine light on and so on. By a good one we don't mean a shiny sh1tbox.
This brings back memories! My dad had a 1997 740i that he bought used back in 2002 or so and traded it for another car back in 2010. It was a nice car, beige on beige, and he loved it for a while. But it started developing issues eventually. Overall though I have to say, it never stranded us anywhere. I also learned to drive on it which was pretty sweet.
I still remember the glowing descriptions of BMW’s “green” plan to make recyclable cars way back in the 80’s. Guess they made good on that dream. They’re nice cars to buy new. Once off warranty, it’s time to put them in the blue dumpster.
I would replace buy with lease, and only if you can bury most of it in business expenses. Buy one and you'll suffer horrific depreciation & have to deal with time lost if it has to go back for warranty issues. Otherwise I totally agree, they are disposable commodities, like pretty much every mid-tier luxury car is these days, especially the German ones. This is of course totally on purpose to drive new car sales, and of course, they do not give one shit about the amount of pollution and landfill they are generating, as long as the cash keeps rolling in - sure you can recycle the steel, aluminium and copper, but most of the hard plastics & electronics in them are destined for landfill, and there are a LOT of hard plastics and electronics. Green my arse.
I own 2 BMW's far out of warranty. It's not as bad as people make it seem at all. Negligence is what makes them get a bad rep. But, when you can buy a 500hp M car for $3k, I don't care about the rep. Keep saying they are horrible lol. I will buy them.
Europe screwed up by pushing "greener" plastics and rubbers onto automakers. A ton of them wound up biodegrading far faster than expected! If 80s-90s Germans could have used American and Japanese plastics and rubbers, the cars would have been completely bulletproof.
In all fairness, I think Tyler wants his 7-series to be to a higher standard than that M6. That 7 is still a really nice car, it's just the labor behind fixing those seals. Once he gets it sorted, it really should be good to go. You know, unless the Hoovie BMW curse kicks in and his mere proximity is enough to make the car spontaneously explode itself one piece at a time.
My uncle got one and it looks and drive amazing. It has phone inside the interior, look so high tech once you get inside. The ride so smooth, no wonder he always wanted me to drive whole he sits in the back.
I owned the 5 series version of this car for 11 years. Same spec same engine model E39 which in my opinion is the nicest 5 series ever produced. It was a 2000 year and in all those years it only required a MAF. It was serviced every year using quality parts and the best oil I could find. Couple of pixels died during my ownership but easy fix in the UK. Eventually I was offered an amazing price for the car and I really struggled on wether to sell it. Turns out I wish that I had kept it as the 540i M Tech Sport is getting difficult to find in good condition. A quick check of the resources available in the UK shows the car fully legal and still being used. I put 70 Thousand miles of the car with regular maintenance and replacing consumables like brakes etc. Great car if looked after properly
If it doesn't have a spare, I don't buy anymore. My Z4 had shitty run flats which are poor riding and useless if you get a puncture in the middle of nowhere with no cell service.
My e38 (728) reached 190000 miles last year before the radiator exploded and it died for good. I believe that it was still on its original plastic guide rails but they were but definitely, certainly on their way out and it was only a matter of time. When I purchased it five years earlier it was the cheapest 728 in the UK price at £425 (due to a rusty gas tank). But I loved it. The quality, the drive. Sublime. I've nothing but a smile everytime I think about it.
I'd wager that the 18" M-Parallel wheels are the most iconic and best looking mainstream BMW wheels ever made. Back in '99 these looked huge and were so BOSS... but in a dignified way. They still look fantastic 20+ years later.
I finally understand. Keep knocking down the BMW's Hoovie, your only doing me the biggest favor in the world by keeping the prices low. Keep up the good work.
He probably got it very cheap (its hoovie) so if the milage is low, then something else is wierd. In this case maintenance is probably minimal on this car.... probably only oil changes and never done anything else...
One of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever driven however I agree problem plagued don’t forget the 25 cent end-stage resistor on a blower motor That requires complete dash disassembly to replace
One of my favorite pieces of car-related TV is Tom Ford's reaction to the Bangle-era 7 series on _Fifth Gear_ back in 2002. "The bloke that designed it, Chris Bangle, says that it communicates 'dynamism, performance, and on-the-road presence.' No, Chris, it doesn't. It communicates fatness, weirdness, and what-the-HELL-is-thatness. Y'see, there's a problem with this bit of the boot here. It might contribute to great aerodynamic efficiency, but it looks like it was built by gibbons with access to welding equipment."
I found it ugly at first too but I ended falling in love with the 745s with the sport pack and then facelift 750 was even more improved. I myself had two e39 540s and when the e60 545i I wasn’t the big of a fan but I ended up loving it and had two e60 550s with sport package. The tech and feeling of the e60 was on a whole different level. My 07 550i had a sticker of $80k. Night vision camera and HUD just to name a few was crazy. I think the design aged really well too,I wouldn’t mind driving an e60 even today.
I feel your frustration Hoovie! I really want one as it was a dream car as a kid yet the reality of actually owning what is one of the most iconic and best looking BMW’s ever is pretty dire... talk about reality check!
I have had my 2001 740I sport since new... I do all the maintenance myself and have dropped the trans myself twice- once for the torque converter seal and the other was the lightweight flywheel replacement... If you can do it yourself it's worth it.. what a wonderful drive!... It is a beautifully styled auto.
In fairness, NOTHING is worse than a Lambo. Actually, a McLaren. Consumer Reports just did a cost of ownership bar graph. They had to extend the page for BMW. First five years, very good; next ten years, total nightmare. My personal BMW made nightmare was not a BMW, but a MINI JCW. I managed to pump about 15,000$ into it in 5 years, before I gave in, and just cut my losses.
I drive BMW since 1981 and had never troubles with it only the normal maintenance things. My BMW’s where, 320, 318i, 323i, 530V8, 325i, M3 and the present one the BMW Alpina B3S 3.4 E46.
Hey Tyler, I have a set of rare Remus dual exhaust system for sale for your e38 if, when you fix the e38. great sound and boost in mid range torque. made me rip it on the road every time i get.
Watching Hoovie buy another BMW must be how my friends feel when they watch me get back with my Ex..... Me.... "this time is different" Friends..... "WTF??"
Reminds me of the Beamer in the Transporter... made me fall in love with them. But I’ll probably never want the headache of owning one. My parents had a mid 80s 3 series. That thing was an all around car.
He's probably getting is so cheap beacause he's wrenching on it too. If you look at hoovies estimate there's ~2.9k labor out of 5.5k bill... Old BMW is a good idea if you can do a lot of work yourself.
@@stanislavs2661 I have a E39 with the same suspension setup. Quality Lemforder control arms are about $100 each, same part as what the dealer sells. He's being quoted $700 parts and labor when you can spend $250 on 2 arms, a ball joint remover, and a case of beer. Old BMWs are quite simple with tons of DIY writeups. Few computers and bullshit, makes them great cars for weekend tinkerers.
All reliable but as soo old and only 82k seal gone hard and leaking. mine was fine 234k only ever had consumables like rota's, shocks, pads, top amd bottom arms in its life was a 1999 model 735i till someone rear ended it and totalled it. Replaced with a 2008 Mercedes C350i worst mistake ever that had sensors go bad monthly so Traded that in to buy a brand new GM back in 2018 that jad 79miles on it and still have that now with 48k but im sure at 80k that will need suspension all round as its had rota's, pads & sensors already.
My me and my Dad had fun with this same spec drifting around the arc de triomphe roundabout in the rain which is notorious black spot for crashes in Paris, France. But always had error messages on the dashboard 😬
I’m a proud owner of 1999 740i FL. Aaaand I remember driving it just yester... ehm...last summer exactly whole one day after being serviced for few months. Still renting the garage hoping for the best.
"they lease cheaply" spot on. That is how they are still on the market. I had an E21 and an E30, my dad had the E21 (bought it brand new in 1975) and friends around me had E36, E38, E34 and E39. For me personally, the E38, E39 and E46 represent the end of the line for BMW for the respective series. Anything later is only junk, when compared (at least in my eyes). I still have an E46 330Cd. After having moved on to a 2015 Audi A6 Allroad, I returned to the much more agile BMW, that had been sitting, waiting. Daunted at first by the complexity, well, for my standards, I now do all of the work myself. Although it is a "mechanic-friendly" car (i.e. it enjoys _very_ regular maintenance) I don't regret it. Definitely a keeper.
@@awfultruth6216 The E34 remains the best looking 5-series as well. The E28 is cooler, but uglier. My perfect BMW garage is E30, E34 and E38. What have I owned? My first car was an E36 that I drove until it died, then an E60 I intend to also drive until it dies. No sale! 😂 They both adhere to the rules of BMW happiness: - Thou shalt not have a V engine - Thou shalt not have less than five or more than seven cylinders - Thou shalt not have forced induction Keep those in mind, and you avoid 90% of the problems 😂 (My E36 was also blessed with no vanos, it had the M50 engine).
People can say whatever they like about BMW's... in general buying a used car is only going to be as good the people that owned it before you. Take the most reliable vehicle you can think of and skip oil changes, run crap gas and treat it poorly and you will have a bad experience. Speaking personally, I own and currently run an E36 M3 and E39 M5 and both have been excellent cars. I bought them both used, from a previous owner that I trusted and admired with confidence that they took care of these vehicles since new. Run good oil and gas, have a relationship with your vehicle and you can truly enjoy a BMW. These cars are not meant for those who want bluetooth and cupholders...
True story. I been watching this channel for almost 2 years and i been always inspired to do the samething you do with cars. Recently I had the opportunity to buy the cheapest BMW 550i in the US thats is running and driving. I did buy the car and after 2 days ownership I discovered that transmission and transfer case are both cracked 😥.lol To fix both these things with parts and labor it will be around 5,000 dollars. I guess the lesson here to never buy a cheap BMW
what I have learned is : stay away from ALL BMW's that are not still under warranty from the factory, period. And then sell it just before the warranty runs out if it is.
@@batsonelectronics given the cost of a new one, why bother at all. If you can afford one, you have nothing to prove. If you have something to prove, you probably can't afford one. And Lexus is always there.
I'm about to do my second DIY M62tu timing chain guide job. First was on my 2005 Range Rover, now on my 2003 540i. Honestly, it is a lot of work, but I think these engines are worth saving compared to all of the new BMW engines. Good job, Hoovie! I hope that you can save this one!
same! about to do a full engine rebuild on my M62TU out of my 540I //M that my mom owned since 2004, once i rebuild the motor im putting it into another 2003 540i ///M with a 6 speed that i just bought with a junk motor
I've had 3 e38s over the years. Absolutely brilliant vehicles and the quality was granite levels of durability. Radiators used to split, random bits of interior trim would implode but for such a huge car they drive fantastically well. If you want pure quality buy an LS430 they last forever but don't drive half as well as the BMW :)
I also love this specific BMW. My grandma had a red one. She stills has it but it was hit by a city of Wichita snowplow and opened the passenger side up like a sardine can. It’s in the back of her property.
Yup. I had over 250K miles on my e34. Engine was still running strong when I sold it, but you should have seen the pages and pages of the repair...I mean "maintenance" log to get it there.
@@JonNobleNobelOne And that's the difference. One of mine is a 25 year old Lexus SC400. Timing belt, brake jobs, some hose replacements, and new valve cover gaskets. And that's it. The steering wheel autotilt, sunroof, power everything all work after 25 years, so does the solid state ABS and traction computer. The 1UZFE was designed as a Daytona engine, and it's so reliable the FAA even certified it for flight. Japanese quality, indeed.
A good running example of an E38 will be one of the best big car driving experiences because this car hides it's size and weight amazingly. Ride and handling especially in the M Sport configuration is spot on too.
I owned a 1998 BMW 750Li w/ a V12 back in 2000 when I was only 20 years old and it was a great car before they switched to all plastic everything under the hood , and it WAS THE PRETTIEST CAR EVER BUILT even to this day if you ask me!! I loved that car so much I remember crying so hard when I drove away from the guys house I bought it from that I had to pull over because I couldn't contain myself. I saved up every dollar I worked for while living at mom and dads house out of high school working as an electrician helper back then for almost 3 years to buy my dream car. Like a young kid I put 19 inch Lorenzos on the caras well as 2 - 18" subs powered by two 1000 watt Memphis digital amps that back then cost a dollar an amp, with a Chameleon flip face stereo!! I also added black lights under the car as well inside the car under the dash and seats so the entire bottom of the car and interior glowed at night. Back in 2000 it was a big deal having all that crap LMAO!! I thought I was BIG SHIT!! LOL!! It did get me a lot and I mean A LOT OF GIRLS!!! My confidence was beyond through the roof!
Our 740IL black on black was purchased new in 2001. Still running strong with just over 100k miles. Our Motorola BMW cell phone worked until Verizon stop supporting that technology. Love the car and plan on keeping it forever.
