I just sold a 69 Custom that was mint, one owner, and from the neighborhood here. It really sounded great and the neck was perfect. Usually don't buy newer vintage guitars but at 9 lbs could not pass it up and was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, a "10" all the way Pilgrims...
Everyone has their own love….I love strats. BUT I love what you play. Restraint. Attention to and respect of the groove. Pure musicality. I get so tired of hearing a bazillion notes played where 1 or 5 feel better. You have that down. Keep ‘em coming.
I remember being a teenager and digging for all the Buk footage I could find. I think I was one of his first 100 subscribers. So, that guitar is seared in my mind. Glad to know it’s in good hands!
I traded in 4 Customshop guitars from Fender, Gibson ESP and Gretsch with 4 amps plus a bunch of pedals for an original 1968 Les Paul Custom. I named her “Dottie” because 68’s had a dot on the Gibson logo. I couldn’t be happier with it. Totally worth it, 🤘😎👍
Awesome video! A few years ago, I picked a 2013 Non-Weight relieved Les Paul Trad Burst out of Nashville that weighs in at 8lbs 14oz, and has the big neck. It came with all the usual suspect upgrades, 50s wiring, Burstbuckers 1/2, bone nut… etc. for a modern Les Paul, it’s a real barn burner, and nice complex highs. A good use of $1400!
If you play a new custom Les Paul next to this guitar they will all sound dead 'dull'. This specimen is the ultimate example of what a Les Paul custom should sound like. That's why I'm holding on to my vintage Les pauls and ignoring all new Gibson guitars since I tried so many of them in music shops over the years
My guitar partner of 60 yrs has a nice one as well. I myself have a 1960 standard and a 55/56 LP Special. We startedout in 1963. Yours is sweet. Nice channel.
I also have a (very early) 1970 Les Paul Custom. Original frets but a lot is changed. 1/2 T-Top is original, the other pickup is "unknown." But thing is, it sounds awesome. Those who plays it, just plays and don't say a word, haha.
Dude I replied on that controlled Hillbilly music video like 10 years ago asking what tuning it was lol thanks so much for giving me closer lol that’s video was what introduced me to buk a long time ago! Enjoy you just as much man, love the channel!
Hey Justin I’m a guitarist and would just like to say to you, Thank You! I have watched most all of your videos and am now watching “Uncle Larry” I’ve learned so much by just the way both of you play and how you guys are. Tom says it best free doesn’t cost us anything. 🎉 Cheers Guys and no ego, no bull, and all humility! Thanks! Side Note the 3:00 mark on Son of Kong is fucking beautiful! And he’s clearly just messing around adjusting the pedal! Love you guys!!! Keep doing GOD’s Work!!! 😊
That is a sweet Custom Les Paul Gibson you got there Justin. And a ‘69 at that. just love my Gibson Les Paul Studio it is my primary guitar for recording. No paint job just all natural wood. Plays like a feather, put’s and growls, and screams when provoked. Definitely reminds me after playing when my shoulder is in knots… but we won’t get on the subject of her weight now… that would just cause more trouble than necessary. Thanks for posting. I enjoy your channel. You are one helluva musician and guitar player. Keep up the good work.
Had to watch right away. Love Customs. I have Burstbucker pros in mine and am thinking of going to custom buckers. Thanks for all you do. Ran into Tom at a guitar show in Franklin this year. He was so nice to me even this I was slightly fan boying.
I do this too. Come back around to one of my guitars. Kind of rediscover it in a way. From my touring years, I would have 2 of each style guitar I played. It’s actually really cool to go to one of my old backup guitars and finding new magic in it. Love your content Justin. Thank you for sharing your talent and stories. 🙏
I'm not sure. Def during the vids you mentioned, but I was thinking of this vid. May not be the same guitar but thinking it was. Regardless, he's killing it on whichever LP this is, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GN3GSViS8HA.htmlsi=SbmNH3Mboo_GwXX9 @@JustinOstrander
I am lucky enough to own an early '69 custom, (one piece neck, long tenon). It's a player grade (heel has been shaved). It is my favorite of every Les Paul that I've ever had, out of about 30, including my 68 standard. I just love T Tops pickups.
" . . . it's the opposite now." - hilarious! As I understand it no volute = 'early' 1969, I believe the velute appeared later that year. I still have the 1968 I bought early 70s when I was 18, very similar. Really enjoying your playing and wisdom . . . looking forward to exploring other vids on the channel!
Very cool Justin & once 1 of Tom's it's a going to be a very good one .... but if playing 4hr on stage probably not the 1 to take out 😀... sit down session would be top !
Don't know how this snuck past me... First, congrats on the score from Second Gear. I only heard about that place after it was gone. Second, thanks for being a mind reader. After your first pass I literally said: "That was great, just wish it was louder" then voila! You fixed it! If you're looking for a custom with a big neck, check out an R4 Black Beauty. Mine informed me of why Frampton's was probably shaved down. It's über girth-y. Yezz, it's not a humbucker example BUT the staple pickup is my favorite jazzbo noise ever contrived and the P90 rips. I don't think they've achieved crazy money yet. As always, thanks for the time and the insights. You TOTALLY got me to re-imagine my approach to the beloved 5e3! Much obliged from Knoxpatch
Not a huge fan of LP's but that one is pretty sweet. I like the tone and feel of PRS better, in general. I'm becoming a fan of solid rosewood necks on Fenders. The resonance is really nice when compared to maple. Not many of those floating around though. The thing I miss most from my days of touring is hanging out at the local guitar stores. 😊😊😊
Les Paul Custom! My first "real' guitar. I bought mine in 1980 with some financial help from my grandmother, God rest her soul. My profile picture is the head stock. No dot over the "i" but it does have the volute and pancake body. I think it's either '74 or '75, I'm not that good at figuring that stuff out. Mostly original. I changed out the original pots a long time ago. It had 250's and I had 500's put in...night and day difference. I broke the original black plastic jack plate jumping off a stage in high school and landing on my ass. Lol. The pickup selector fell apart years ago. The treble pickup had been changed to a Dimarzio Super Distortion when I got it. I found a mid '70's T-Top on eBay off an E335 that was just a bit hotter than the original rhythm pickup on my Lester. I know it's not the best Les Paul in the world but it's my Les Paul! It plays like butter and it sounds pretty good through everything I've run it through, even plug ins. Lester the Molester....that's my baby!!! Wouldn't trade her for the world. 🙂
What a guitar! When you said you were going to play in C#, I was expecting C# Minor (relative minor to E). As usual it proved easy for you in C# Major. Justin, your slide playing is sneaky great. I am catching your occasional fingering of a note behind the slide - not just the last note of that solo. Wish I could get better at slide. Some of my guitars are more friendly in that regard. They play to my weaknesses.
@@JustinOstrander For me, the best part of hearing your slide playing is that you pay so much attention to hitting that string at the right tuning. Very instructive.
They’re either T tops or the earlier patent sticker PAFs (gold covered ones have been known to be installed late into the 60s on Customs, ES-355s, etc)…I haven’t looked
Justin thanks for the video. Got me to get my LP out, been playing my strat lately. PS which do you prefer open or covered humbuckers? Thanks for all you do.
That's a good year for sure. And one of the last. The 70s were junk. In 72 I had a LP Custom and was absolutely shocked at how cheaply made it was. A Rep gave me one of the 1972 EHS Custom LPs as long as I used on stage and in the studio now and then. I thought why not. Once I used it I sold the Gibson LP trash and walked away from newer LPs forever. I know for a fact that this 69 LP C is a fine quality crafted Gibson.
@@JustinOstrander A non pancake body is more valueable and more desirable. Mine is a very early 1970 Custom with original frets. Not a case queen, but still nice to play with loads of sustain.
I'm a big fan of customs, I only have one, but I'm hoping to get a black beauty some day, what I like about them is the first fret marker and the binding on the headstock, the fret marker fills out the fretboard, and I think it looks great, it's hard to go back to just a standard, after you get a custom, that guitar sounds really good, just wondering if the body binding is aged or is the yellowing natural, since the neck and headstock still looks white, thanks for the video.
When I was a kid in the eighties I picked up a black Les Paul Custom that was beat to hell and modified to hell it was light but it played like crap don't miss it but I love that 69
My first guitar was a '74 Custom. Later I got a '59 3 pickup. I finally realized I really don't like Customs, the fretless blunder. Give me a Standard any day.
First good electric I ever owned was one of those I bought in a pawn shop in 1973 for 300 bucks...I played it for two decades and now a good friend has it. Mine wasn't that light. I'm not sentimental about it at all. I'm a 335 guy these days.
Have 81 Les paul, ITS built like a tank. It's about as heavy as a AR15! I'm too old, so l bought the sg l love both my les paul, and the sg,the sound is similar.bb
Truth be told, I believe you could pick up an old Teisco and make it sound incredible. Both lead parts were some of the most tasteful things I've heard in awhile and really inspiring. Where can I find your finished stuff? You might not be able to disclose here, but I am going hunting. Thanks for doing what you do. And thanks for the little tidbits you toss in as well.
So is this what a good Les Paul should sound like, I got a chibson/epiphone I had custom built with no reliefs and I’d say it’s probably a 9.5/10 the same tone, I just never get a good comparison tone, especially through the vox ac30 , I got roller saddles and bone nut, and plecked Most
Hey Justin, interesting to hear that Uncle Larry doesn’t like the new Gibson reissues. I been looking at a 335 vos ‘64 for sometime and trying to decide if that’s the best way to get a “good” 335. Have you had any experience with those? I saw your video about getting an 80s 335 but those seem to have gone way up in value or are hard to find.
To be fair, I remember him saying that several years ago. I think Gibson is putting out better and more consistent guitars out of the custom shop these days. A friend of mine has a ‘64 335 reissue. It is a FANTASTIC guitar.
Justin…you and I come from 2 different worlds…you need a guitar for certain sounds…I needed something that was light, comfortable and was always in tune…so I bought a Strandberg…I sit for hours learning solos (I’m a slow learner and an idiot)…I was starting to get pain in my left hand…the strandberg has worked out quite well…unfortunately my other guitars feel heavy and cumbersome now😳
Man I just bought a 59 reissue dirty lemon VOS guitar and it’s the best guitar I’ve ever played. I would not hesitate to by a new reissue. And the VOS finish is the way to go in my book.
That is a very nice Les Paul Custom you have Justin. Good old Gibsons sound great in the hands of a guy like you. I am glad you don't play Strats too often, I just cannot enjoy that weedy sound.
@@JustinOstrander Thank God. I was thinking “where would I get that kind of money”. Even though i’am an old guy I still want one of thoes. I have been looking at used Les Paul Specials, black. If I ever sell that impulse purchase Epiphone 12 string hummingbird. I am a hobby player. That Les Paul Custom you have is very cool.
I love your channel Justin! I seen these early Tom videos with this guitar and so I bought what I could afford and that was an Epiphone gold top les Paul . Factory wise it sounded blah so I put some Duncan Pearly Gates in it and it turned into a demon. Playing in a country band where tele is king, the look of what the the hell, a les Paul was prevalent until I fired it up. I know it it is a little thick, tone wise for some things but the tone is ballsy as hell. I have had more compliments on my tone from other players and my own girlfriend says, your other guitars sound great(tele) but they ain't Les! Lol.....
