I told you on VinWiki, that you're the OG of Car Guys. Your good mojo is stronger than Tyler's mojo. So, the next time he calls you "Urination Bob", kindly remind him of what happened when he turned on the A/C on the barn find Mercedes. The mojo/karma double whammy!
My coworker had 3 of these Mercedes Benz 300D sedans. They were plentiful in the San Fernando Valley around 2005-2020 and cheap! Most had about 50-70k miles to start. Barely broken in for a diesel. She’d drive them until something major happened. Very comfortable! PS - Epic to see Hoovie get mouth full of dust and mouse poo.
Outside of the mice and a bit of rust, seems like a pretty solid car. Could make for a good project car for someone to clean up. A solid base there to start with for whoever buy sit.
Everyone knows those are the single greatest cars ever made! More of those were built AND more are still in service around the world than any other car. More than the Beetle, more than the Hilux.
I kind of follow the Mercedesource guy, and if there's anything I've learned from him, is that you cannot kill these motors. Literally. Because he had one where a valve spring broke and was jammed into the cylinder and it STILL started, ran, and ran at almost full power. They could not figure out what the weird noise was until they completely tore the block apart. They found the connecting rod was bent because a broken valve spring got logged in the cylinder. Yet it still started, started cold and hot, ran, and drove up to 70 on the highway. And the odometer had stopped at 250,000 miles years ago.
Oh wow! Bob, I would buy it in a minute if I was in the country…. That is a jewel. It started easily because of the low miles and probably some decent maintenance. Great compression!
Hi Bob, glad to see you in another video. Bob, i will be surprised if it didn't started,.as you know very well they never die :) keep it and out it back on the road
These cars were capable of driving well over a million kms without any engine work done. Here in Europe these were THE taxi cars that were used everywere. I live in The Netherlands and back in the 80s tonnes of these w123 models were driving around, most were the 200,220 or 240D models. They're still very popular today and regarded as the best models Mercedes Benz ever made. This car will outlive the modern crap that towed the trailer by a huge marging, since these cars were made to drive AND be fixed when needed. Enjoy it,great buy and with these miles barely run in
Great looking car Bob. I had one years ago and I really enjoyed it. My main issue was the glacial slowness. Once it was up to speed it was great but getting there was an experience. I sold mine to a gentleman who had a small collection as a daily driver for his mechanic. He still owns it and it's probably been 20yrs since I sold it to him
Yes, it ran great but coming from V8 daily drivers it was pretty sketchy getting on the freeway. We had a lot of freeway entrances that have pretty short on ramps. I owned an auto repair shop at the time and used the car to shuttle customers back and forth. EDIT - It would have been in the mid to late 90's and a lot of us were still driving 70's cars, lol.
I had a 280E in about 1983. My mum wrote it off (totalled) in the late 80s. Head on both cars doing over 70mph. She was fine. At least the 280 had some power.
It's an OLD Mercedes Diesel, and it only has 123K. I'm slightly surprised it started as easily as it did, but I had no doubt it'd start! Those buggers are good for half a million miles and more!
Hey Bob, there's a dealership in Jacksonville FL (united imports) that has a Opel Lotus Omega for sale..I spoke to him for a while a month ago.He had two sold one on bat. He has a sick inventory. Just FYI.
The spare tire was definitely old but it wasn’t one of the factory tires. Hopefully you don’t find more rust as you often do the deeper you dig into these cars. You probably want to remove the old aftermarket alarm as I did on mine to eliminate potential electrical problems.
The locks are vacuum operated and if anything goes wrong it’s a cinch to trace and replace. They pretty much have to be subjected to some harsh elements to fail, like salt, oils, fuels, solvents of any kind, or constant moisture.
My grandma had an 1989 300D, so a W124, the body style after this one. She'd end up getting a 2000 C320 after that, so the V6 model, last year of the W202's.
These W123’s are so incredibly durable that wear and abuse is sort of a badge of honor. I think the coolest ones are still plodding down the road with a dent in the door, a cracked tail light, and 350K on the clock.
😱 My blood pressure instantly rose as I saw that dumb, ignorant loader operator damaging the car with the long forks. I'm glad that there is a big pond between him and me.
hope the fork driver didnt just destroy your sls system,Here Down Under a Turbo diesel 300D is a 10K car, love it,them mileage Hankooks are from the 9th week of 2004 and look like they have a heap of tread left on them ,pretty sure they have a white sidewall on the inside but id be swapping them out anyways ,go for a 205/70x14 they look better than the 195
The fact it popped right up,tells me it has good compression, if the engine was worn it would crank and crank, probably has another 150 thousand miles of life, fingers crossed
This kind of loading onto a trailer would NEVER happen here. It can cause lot more damage instead of doing it right by lifting it up with a crane. One reason to keep in mind once you are buying an american car.
They do this in the UK too and Salvage Rebuilds UK had a video talking about the fact that this doesn't do any harm to the car if it's done right since it is lifted on the pinch welds. A crane would be far more dangerous.
Very Cool Bob. Starts, runs, and blasts 8 years of dust and mouse turds! ha. Congratulations. Love the W123. Looks like even the leather seats are in decent shape. Does the odometer still spin?
I'd say clean it up remove the mice poop get it mechanically safe and and reliable and let the next owner do as they wish with it I think that's a good plan
I'm a big fan of you, Hoovie and the gang but I really didn't want to click this video. Now that I have RU-vid will bombard me with Will it start videos I care nothing about. I mean sure I like engines and I watch rebuilds and all but I don't give a rats ass if some 15 year old weed whacker will start. RU-vid's algorithms are so bad at times.
Oops! I just wanted to differentiate my customer directed car overview videos from my “fun adventure stuff” so you know what you are getting when you watch my videos. Thanks for watching and giving feedback!
@@euroasianbob9268 IMO. much better. I clicked the video and then again opened YT home page and didn't get the start videos. It really does work! HAHAHA Nice one Bob, U the man.
Why do they pick it up like that!!!!! He just drove the spikes right into the underside when he missed! That's just dumb! Unless you are throwing it on a wrecking pile don't do that!
It’s Copart. You don’t have a choice. He just hit the steel lower control arm and didn’t do any damage to this tank but think of all the damage they do to modern cars.
According to Babvvo and Tebbvo laws, sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime!!!!!!!
