I know that this video is over a year old but I just came across it and I had to comment. I had recently purchased a used Champion 3400 Dual Fuel unit that wasn't running...supposedly sat in storage for about 9 months. As I figured, the carburetor was all gunked up. I decided to replace it rather than try to clean it as it was pretty corroded. Still wouldn't start. Then started my journey of tearing the generator apart to find the problem. One of the main issues was that it had a faulty inverter board. I replaced it and it would then start but ran crappy. Anyway, it turned out that the new carburetor came with a faulty "stepper motor" on it. I just happened to have kept the old carburetor and replaced the new stepper motor with the old one and BAM, started right up and ran like a charm. Who'd of thought! After hours and hours of trouble shooting this thing, man, was I a happy camper! I let Champion know this and they promptly sent me a new carburetor. One lesson from your experience and mine that needs to be shared...never fully reassemble your generator until you have thoroughly tested it to make sure it runs right. It will save you hours of disassembly/assembly time, not to mention reducing your risk for loosing parts or ending up with "extra" parts, lol.

Just remember to constantly check your oil level. Also try to run your generator as level as possible to keep the oil circulating properly. Just a thought.

Good point, most people don’t realize that if the oil is low you’ll never keep it running, or get it running because of the oil kill switch!

I would add one thing to video - make sure fuel filter isn't clogged. And some generators have tiny little inline filters that slide inside the nipple on the bottom of the fuel tank like on my Champion 3100W inverter generator. (#75537i) They clog easy and you can't even see them until you pull the hose off. They pry out with a little screwdriver or knife.

Youre lucky it was so cheap. I bought a used gen from a friend it had sat about 4-5 months. When I fired it up it ran about 15 seconds, then spit the connecting rod out the crankcase and across the yard. The old fuel gummed up the carb causing a lean condition which of course runs super hot and seized the piston. Luckily coleman repaired it for free under warranty even tho it was customer error.

LP gas gives off water vapor in the exhaust, and doesn't get inside the carburetor. But the high humidity may find it's way into the bone dry carburetor to corrode in the float bowl and other areas inside the carburetor.

Hey. Learn the chemistry you never learned. What's the amount of water released due to the combustion of propane, NG, butane, etc? Yeah, humidity did that. God help them, please!!!

A little pointer, no need to create a 13 minute video on a simple fix solution such as running gas periodically if you usually use propane. Save your viewers some time on this one. RU-vid shorts are perfect for something like this. Then you can do a separate DIY video on all the work you did on it to help clean it up. I spent 6 mins or so just skipping ahead 10 seconds at a time until you got to the question at hand. Hope this helps you out.

Sorry pal. But you clued a few people in. Hope you found a good no name carb, at least. Propane may create a pound of water for every two pounds burned. Every generator needs to be to be gone over as close to 1 use, 1 complete clean out as possible. Not usually possible, but that's what would be vest, so you meet in the middle. Now you know why gas furnaces used to rust out so fast. It's a lesson that may pay you 100 times over in your life, though.

I didn’t believe it, so I contacted WEN generators which is very similar, if not exactly like the Champion. The manufacturer said that yes, you should use both fuel sources to prevent corrosion. Alternate the propane and gasoline every 4-6 weeks start up. Fuel stabilizer is mandatory also in the gasoline tank. Always run the generator by shuting the fuel source switch to off. Gasoline and propane will burn and empty the carburetor. This shut off procedure will prevent this. Thanks for the video.

You are a lot more resourceful than what I did with a 4500 watt Westinghouse with an automatic choke that was stuck... I set it aside and bought a dual fuel Champion 4650. One thing I do to ensure a generator lasts a while is to use E0 gasoline with a fuel preservative, and try to run it at least a few hours monthly with a half load. I managed to have a Yamaha generator last for 5000-6000 run hours by doing this. This is very good info, as I was planning to just run propane through my dual fuel generator. However, it might just be wise to run gasoline, then use propane near the end just to get any gas out of the carb bowl, but not so much propane as to cause water buildup.

You should run a quart of gas through it every 3 months. Keep up with the oil changes per the manual. If you leave gas in it, add some stabilizer. Plus running it every three months is also a good way to remind yourself to charge the battery. :) Also use REC GAS if you can. (90oct no ethanol) Marathon stations have it. Keeps that carb from gumming up.

I have a 20 year old generator that only runs on gas, and sometimes I don't run it for several years until I need it. When I do run it I ensure that I run it until the fuel tank is empty and I have always use standard gas with ethanol. As long as you let the unit run until empty the carb stays clean. No need to constantly maintain fuel if there is no fuel. But I also have no battery to maintain.

I have the Tri-Fuel 8,000/10,000 Watts for a month now and just learning about the effects of running on propane only and then having issues with the carb as told on this video. So I called the company 3 times (the first 2 times the wait time was over 2 hrs). Upon asking about the need to run it on gasoline too, the agent could not understand my thinking. He told me repeatedly to ignore peoples' suggestions (of getting into issues if only run on propane). The only thing he emphasized was, if run on gasoline, to make sure I use a fuel stabilizer or/and empty the tank (let engine run out of gas would be best). So, no clear answer from Champ. By the way, the company's support is bad (had to make other calls for a different issue) - agents are upset, rude, and non-helpful
@johnlucier5654
@johnlucier5654 6 месяцев назад
My laymans take would be if you run on propane only you should run the gas system periodically, with a strong mix of stabil, then fully drain that gas system. Just to keep that part of the gen healthy. If they advised against that would love to see their logic. Remember sometimes tech help is some guy they pay min wage plus 10% to hand out anwers that hes not allowed or qualified to think past. Its fantasy to believe you would get someone on the phone with years of experience running their gens or anyone elses. Kind of like auto parts counter guys at autozone etc. zero experience repairing cars, and thats understandable.

CHANGE THE OIL! Keep in mind, these small engines don't have oil filters, and barely hold one quart of oil. It's easy for the oil to become contaminated. 4 days of running it is surely enough hours, to require an oil change. When shutting off the generator, it's actually better to remove all loads, then, shut off the gas tank valve, rather than the ignition. That will empty the carburetor, so it doesn't dry out, and leave varnish behind. As the float bowl runs out of gas, ride the choke, to keep it running as long as possible. That clears the emulsion tube, as well as the idle circuit, owing to the higher vacuum created by the choke valve.

The open frame Champions have a shut off valve which allows you to isolate the carb from the tank. It also has a drain screw to drain the gas out when you're done, but I usually just run it out of gas. I guess the enclosed generators aren't this way? Good info for others who have the same gen. Thanks for the video.

AWESOME Information. I just fired up my Champion Dual Fuel Generator after 6 years. Bought it from Costco in 2017 and NEVER used it. It was in Storage for a few years then in my garage for a few more years. Never needed it for anything so I just never fired it up. Then with recent bad weather I figured I better pull it out and get it ready in case I need it. Put Oil in it and then tried to "electric" start it but nothing was happening. Realized I needed to use the Charge Adapter to charge the Electric Start Battery. Charged it for a Day then tried again but it still wasn't doing anything. It seemed like it was trying to turn over but was really weak. Left the charger on for a couple more days then the Electric Start Again and this time - iI could tell it was turning over. I dod not have any fuel connected yet because I did not want to actually start it until I could run it for a few hours. Finally today I connected the Propane tank and fired it up. Ran like a Champ. I bought mine strictly for use with Propane as well so this video was awesome. Had I not watched this....I would have Never thought about the problems of running Propane Only. Champion should POST a HUGE WARNING on the Generator because you are correct. Propane causes a lot of condensation. I intentionally planned to only use Propane because I did not want FUMES in my garage when storing the Generator. Guess I will have to Store it in the Shed now. Curious if it would be best to just store it with Fuel and a Fuel Stabilizer or if it will be ok to run it dry after using Gas. I plan to call Champion tomorrow to see what they suggest. THANKS AGAIN FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! Very Helpful!

@@WeCanExploreIt So.....I called Champion Support. I explained that I was concerned about running my Dual Fuel Generator strictly on Propane. I explained that I planned to use only propane and not gasoline and explained the issue you experienced with the rust. The Support person told me that "The Propane fuel system is separate from the Gasoline Fuel System" and they do not have any impact on each other (paraphrasing). She told me that running strictly propane would not impact the generator. I then felt that I needed to explain further that I understood that the Propane fuel system and Gas Fuel are separate but I was concerned that SOMEHOW running Propane ONLY would harm the generator and cause the Carb or Float bowl to rust. She again insisted that it would not. I explained that people (your situation) have experienced rusting in the gasoline portion of the engine after never having run gasoline in the generator. She then started to suggest that "we" don't know the complete circumstances around "your"" situation"...and I agreed because I do not know for certain.....only what you have stated in this video. But I trust that you have no reason to be dishonest about what happened and therefore I wanted to get to the bottom of what could have happened. Since I was still questioning the Champion Support rep I could tell she was not happy with me for not just accepting her answer.....true or not.......and she started to become very "SHORT" with me. I then told her that I could tell she was not interested in helping me any further so I hung up the phone on her. I felt as though she was not going to elaborate any further than what she already stated to me which was.......Running Propane Only would have NO AFFECT on the Gas Lines. It made sense to me but I still am concerned and feel that this has not been completed resolved. Also.....I think she misunderstood me when I said that I would strictly be running the generator on Propane and She said that it would be fine and not impact the Gas. But as I had to further explain to her....what I meant was...I planned to use Propane the vast majority of time and only run Gas if the need arose. I never meant that I would NEVER .......EVER run gasoline in the generator because that completely defeats the purpose of DUAL FUEL. Bottom line is.....I am still not certain if Running Propane MOST of the time will have any impact on the Gasoline Fuel System or not and I don't think Champion Customer Support really knew either. Sure it would seem that the Propane Fuel System should have NO impact on the Gas System but I trust that you would have told us if you ever Ran gas in your generator and maybe left old gas in the generator eventually leading to the problem you encountered. I trust that You were completely honest in your video and therefore I cannot believe that this was just an unlucky circumstance although I suppose it is possible. But since I have NO idea what could have caused this and I do NOT trust what the Champion Customer Support told me....For me, I will simply take precautions and Make it a habit to run 100% GAS and fuel stabilizer in the generator every now and then just to keep any water/moisture from causing problems. Sorry for the LONG response but I was getting very aggravated with The Customer Support because I felt she was not ver "reassuring" me there was NO PROBLEM and I could tell she did not like my questioning her answer. Not sure if this is of any help to anyone else but just thought I'd share it.

The gasoline drain was in my manual for the 2500 duel fuel. No mention of running it on gasoline from time to time to keep the carburetor clean. I may see if I can fit a gasoline cut off into the line so I can run it dry instead of draining it for short periods of non- use. I also use fuel stabilizer in all my small engines just in case I don't get back and start them as planned. As an aside I have also used the stabilizer at twice the normal amount in cars that I left for 3-9 months when on trips to Alaska from Texas. None have needed any fuel system work over the four years in Alaska and the five years after we came back full time in the lower 48.

I ran my recently sold 10KW Champion generator for 18 months on just propane and I never had one single issue. I recently sold it because I wanted an inverter generator so I bought their 8750 watt model. I did the initial five hour engine break in cycle using gasoline only. But I have since then converted it to a tri fuel set up and it will never see gasoline again. Propane is so much better than gasoline in terms of fuel supply practicality along with having a much cleaner running engine as opposed to gasoline.

@@cipherfxmp I read that you don’t want to break in an engine on propane unless the unit already came as a dual fuel setup.

What was your wiring to hook it up to your house? Afaik, you connect your generator hot wire to either one or both hot wires in your transfer switch, the latter though creates a concern of a multiwire branch circuits with overloaded neutral. Thanks!

I have one of these Generators without LP hook up. I usually don't leave gasoline in the tank. An old friend of mine that repairs generators always told me to run the gas out and empty the bowl. He was right, I have a generator that is 30 plus years old and it worked to keep it running. But this champion I wonder about what they are making the gas tanks out of? I had used regular mostly and some with no alcohol. We had a tornado last year and was out of power for a week, I ran it dry. Now I went out to exercise it and the tank is rusted inside, my brothers tank was rusted in less than a year. A friend of mine has told me there is a guy here in Chattanooga that if you take the tank off and take it to him he, cleans the rust out some way, glass bead or pecan shells or something and can re coat the inside of the gas tank with a better coating. I have a brand new Firman Tri-Fuel and now I am confused. I had planned to never put gasoline in it unless I just had to.

Thanks for the video. I would never had known this (about condensation build up from using only propane). Watching to the end I Was really rooting for you. Your determination and stick-to-it-ness was Rocky like inspiring. By the way, ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning is will absorb moisture from the air. As in, over time water will seem to magically appear in your tank, go to the bottom, and be the 1st thing the pickup tube draws. So "gas goes bad" is kinda sorta true and kinda misleading. Removing the water from the bottom of, or replacing all the gas from, tank and carb, usually gets a motor started if it sits.

Are you saying that by running only propane, condensed water collected in carb? I thought propane was a clean fuel. If you or anyone else can explain, I would appreciate. And what about units designed to only run on propane or natural gas, do their carbs rust from condensation? Perhaps there's something else going on here

Propane produces water when it’s burned. As I recall, it’s a 1 to 1 ratio. Most of that should leave through the exhaust. Running a propane heater or stove in a small space, like an RV will put moisture in the air that can lead to mold issues. It makes sense that running only on propane would leave some condensation inside the engine (carburetor). As I just purchased a duel fuel (Champion) generator and had planed on only running propane, I’ll be checking with Champion tech support to verify this. I’ll also be asking if draining the carburetor will fix this without the need to run gasoline.

Nitro RC trucks have the same problem because their fuel attracts moisture what you have to do is spray some WD-40 or seafoam deep creep into the carburetor right before you shut it off that will take the lubricant into the carb and the combustion chamber and keep it from rusting
