This week I started work on a brand new driveway workshop, by building the frame. I've never built anything like this before: Can I muddle my way through and build something that won't fall down?

Looking good, I'd probably have used bigger joists but then I over-engineer everything (you can always double them up if it looks like sagging). Going to be a big roof and you get some wind up north - hope you're sticking some tie downs (or upside down joist hangers) on before you put the lid on and paint the cut ends of the treated timber with end-grain preserver.

Thanks chief, I’ll defo look into that. Doubling up is probably a good shout.

I would have used a lap cut to join the two main support beam parts. Next, spread some Titebond glue over the surface and clamp. It will make a super strong beam. The lower side of the roof would be a good place to run a gutter to collect rainwater from. I don't know what sort of wind or snow loads you get there but a 2x4 for a top support beam is nowhere adequate for support. At a minimum, it should be a 2x6. I bolt and glue that beam. You have to assume that some stupid person will walk on the roof eventually. It is better to have too much than not enough. I don't know what sort of roof you are planning but you might consider one made of clear or semi-clear polycarbonate panels. It will be easy to put up and let lots of light in during the day...

Looks great, did something similar to create a lean-to down the side of my house. Only challenge was finding a way to avoid the gas people condemning my boiler due to the vent being into an enclosed space. My boiler wasn't suitable for a goose-neck extension, hope yours is!

Hi mate, before you go any further, you may want to beef up the roof joists, that sort of span with (I’m guessing c16 timber) 4x2 will sag and could cause a whole host of issues, especially when the snow comes it may collapse. Maybe look at getting some larger c24 timber and I’d swap the untreated for treated timber for your wall plates! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. There’s websites you can use to work out what size timber you should use for your span.
@northernworks
@northernworks Год назад
Oh no! I spent a good amount of time researching to make sure everything could handle the local loads, but I'll definitely check that out - thanks chief.
@resmond
@resmond 11 месяцев назад
@@northernworksDefinitely look undersized for that span, pitch and spacing. I think 4x2 might be alright at a steep pitch but you’re lean too is on the verge of a flat roof. Another thing to note is a 4x4 does not have the same deflection strength as a 8x2. Adding intermediate joists to bring the span from 600 to 300 could help, may also be possible to glue and screw 2x2 to the bottom of your 4x2 and then add some joist hangers at either end to support

Will be interested to see how this turns out. 2 questions for you, does the vent for your boiler go straight into the workshop your building, if so will fumes and vapour be an issue. Second question how do you plan on dealing with the rain water that the roof will shed directly into your neighbours. One of my neighbours built a huge garage and every time we get heavy rain the garden floods and i cant let the dogs out for days until it is dried out. Hope your build goes well and these points arent going to cause to many issues. Good luck.
@northernworks

Well…I don’t want to spoil the next video, but those were definitely two factors I’ve had to overcome 🤓

Looking good mate! Question, I’ve always thought there needed to be a dpm between the wood and concrete/brickwork to increase lifespan of wall plate and posts? Keen to see how you get on in the next vid!
@northernworks
@northernworks Год назад
Yeah, I wondered about that - and probably should have just put one in - but they should never get wet once the roof is on (is my hope!)
@elminz
@elminz Год назад
I'm no expert, but personally I would have used a larger joists. Snow is the real problem. e.g. Snow load be 0.40kN/m2 (can be looked up for particular areas), so a fully exposed (that isn't tho) area of ground might have ~40kg/m2 of snow load. I would have gone 2x5 or preferably 2x6.
@northernworks
@northernworks Год назад
I'll definitely look into that and check how they're holding up
@elminz
@elminz Год назад
@@northernworks I'm sure it will be fine for the time being. I think any problem may show up after heavy snow or in several years. I've not got the experience with it personally, but have seen a lot of builds using larger for that span and span tables do say 2x6 for that sort of distance/spacing. It's not much issue for a workshop vs a house though as it's much easier to rectify later if it does prove to be a problem, nor does a bit of sag matter if it's not plasterboarded.
@northernworks

@northernworks
@northernworks Год назад
Aye, I reckon we definitely have some similar influences from the early 2010s vlogging explosion. B-roll's funny - sometimes I remember, and other times I forget until half-way through an edit and then it's usually too late 😅. Haven't seen any Wild Wonderful Offgrid - I'll have to check them out. Love how your house is coming along, by the way!

I bet the neighbours are going to be happy when the rain comes and it's all coming over their side of the fence. Will they also like the guttering on their side? How are the fence panels coming out to be replaced, I ask because my neighbour did a similar lean to. He asked for permission but forgot to mention the full plan to me. Not a happy bunny but put up with it, to be a good neighbour.

@northernworks
@northernworks 11 месяцев назад
Haha, glad you found it. You’re right though, too many people take ‘permitted development’ to mean ‘I don’t need to talk to anyone’ - I’ll be keeping an eye on the rainwater over the coming months to make sure nothing is flowing straight over the fence
