THIS THING IS AWESOME!! This is my 48V 1000W 20AH ebike that I built from a Voilamart eBay kit. For only $350, I really didn't expect that this electric bike would be as cool as it is, but it is! It does wheelies, burnouts, off-roads like a champ, and rides on the road even better for around 50 miles before you have to charge the battery. I hope you guys enjoy the video!

I have had motorcycles my whole life. I have a large 1700 cruiser right now because I am old, BUT I am a drone pilot and photographer and I just bought my first Ebike this year and have barely touched my motorcycle. I take the Ebike up trails all of the time and find places all over the city to launch my drone and be discreet. I just look like a guy on a bicycle with a little backpack. I get off trail and film all kinds of stuff I could never get to I a car and in places where there are no people questioning what I am doing. I am already planning my Ebike upgrade.

the battery level indicator on the screen reads the voltage of the battery, and when you put a load on the battery the voltage can drop a pretty large amount depending on what power you draw. That's why the battery life is "draining" when you use the throttle

Hey, you should look into; -Disc brakes -Better rims (not sure what are on there but look into thicker walled rims) -Possibly better tires that support higher PSI so you know that they have better construction (an egg in the tire could literally kill you) -Pedals w/ removable pins so you have more grip but not strapped or toe clipped pedals as those might also kill you -Different gearing options for the uphill and downhill -A battery level reader that is separate from the display so you know actual bat levels
@Nphen
@Nphen 4 года назад
I bought a Voilamart kit and the tire was dead within 100km. I got a Kenda Iron Cap tire at a local bike shop and have since put hundreds of miles on it and it's as good as ever! The bike shop owner (25+ years experience) said the rim from the Voilamart kit was good. The battery level on the display I think is only reading voltage. That's why it reads lower when the motor is engaged. I always go by the level indicator on my battery pack. Seeing how much cheaper the blue wraps are though - I think I'm done with buying fully-assembled battery kits from now on!

I'd just like to say, v brakes, with good pads and propperly adjusted, are plenty good for 40 mph. I built a motorized bicycle that weighed 60 pounds, and went 40, and the v brakes would lift the rear tire under braking. Even with a rather chubby 230 pound me at the time. The main issue with v brakes is they are inconsistent and dont work as well in the wet. but higher end pads somewhat reduce that issue. But day to day, I never found myself wanting for brakes with a set of kool stop pads.
@milesmoore5422

Disc brakes are much more expensive and more work to maintain, and in the dry conditions work no better then the good rim brakes. In the wet, disc are necessary.

hey, just thought id clarify your concern about how weird the watts are acting and how your battery meter seemed to be acting funny. any ebike motor kit only consumes its max amount of power when starting from a stand still and when going up hills or carrying a big load, once you are up to speed (or nearing the speed limit you have set) the wattage goes down bc its not using as much power to gain or maintain its speed. as for the battery meter acting funky: ebike kits use battery voltage to determine the remaining charge, as your kit draws power from the battery your battery voltage will begin to sag, this is a normal thing on ebikes and your battery voltage will slowly begin to climb back as the bike begins to use less power, this is why your meter shows half battery when accelerating and goes back to full once your up to speed. hope this clarified a few things tho you prolly already figured that out
@imnota
@imnota 3 года назад
Yeah and I'm sure his battery isn't rated for that much power draw which makes the voltage sag even worse, it's one of those fake 20 billion Ah kind of batteries you can find on Aliexpress. If you look you'll see it's totally square which doesn't make sense for a battery made out of round cells, usually you can see rounded corners and bumps because of the individual cells, but here I bet it's a small 10s2p 4ah type of battery but in a bigger box to make you think the capacity written on it is real.

The controller pull more power to accelerate or uphill but not much to keep at a constant speed, unless if you have a lot of wind resistance. You will get a more accurate battery level after 10 cycles. This motor can get a lot of abuse. You can overvolt up to 120v no problem. I use lipo batteries in 24s configuration. (4 22000mah 6s lipo packs connected in series). You need change the controller for a 72v 3000w (3kw) one or better. tires to at least 2.25 and please hydraulic disc brakes! The battery meter goes down because the battery is weak to supply the amps necessary to accelerate so voltage Sag quite a lot

Battery level indicator works off of the battery's voltage, which drops under load and recovers off-load. That's why the gauge dips when going uphill. Laws regarding e-bikes vary from state to state, but in most states they're considered moped/scooters and subject to the same regulations.

Such motorized bikes inherently have LESS bodywork and framing to protect the rider than a typical scooter, so the rider has to assume MORE responsibility for his own safety.

HVAC guy here. Work with motors alot.... The watts reading is going to jump around because it's based on load, downhill, less, uphill more. Anytime the controller decides to cut it, it will drop. Pedal-assist is faster because you are taking a lot of the load off, we are high torque beasts, not speedy. So the motor is adding to your legs, boom, you're FLYING. I don't know, just going off what I run into a lot, we are getting brushless/VFD/PWM motors in my field increasingly. And had to learn about them and their controllers.

Is it a new built battery of a home made battery pack ? What type motor and rating are you running ? It’s all relative. If you have a 509w hub motor like I do and only get 8 miles somethings seriously wrong but if you tell me it’s a 1500w motor and your 300lbs and doing that 8 miles stretch at 28-35 mph it might be fairly accurate but even then I’d say you’d get 12-15 miles in my scenario More then likely sounds like an worn battery or you have a few bad cells etc

I ordered a front wheel 1000 watt kit. I have fairly skinny tires and I do ride through sand sometimes. So having a motor to drive the front wheel while my legs drive the rear wheel should be a huge plus. I'm really looking forward to slapping this upgrade on my bike. Bet it's gonna be a lot of fun. Even if the difference between highest and lowest capacity or internal resistance of a cell is 0.5% if they are discharged half way then charged up again to 80% below where Ballancing can start after even 10 or 20 cycles there can be a significant difference in voltages between the cells. BMS's are programmed to Ballance cells out to avoid this, however as the charger is directly connected to the main terminals how this works is high cells that hit 4.2v first are discharged with a little resistor to maintain that voltage while the low cells continue to charge to reach full voltage. If a pack never gets to fully charge this process will never get to occur and even though it can take a long time problems could start to happen if say the weaker cells end up completely discharged while the higher cells are still going strong.

I just finished my exact same build on same bike and voilamart 1000w kit for total $450 after tax all from ebay. The battery is 48v 20Ah. It works well so far the the only draw back of this mountain bike is the limited space in the middle so i cant mount anything in the mid frame even the controller box. If you have the controller box in the middle, it may get crushed when you hit the bump or something because there is a shock pole there. I leave both battery and the controller on the back seat which make the back really heavy.

The battery guage is a volt meter. When you use the motor it loads the circuit and the voltage drops. Hence showing fewer bars until the load ceases and the voltage drop is removed.
@kd4dhk
@kd4dhk 3 года назад
To anyone ordering a battery pack for an ebike, the continuous discharge current that the battery is capable of is just as important as the voltage if you want your motor to actually perform.
@kd4dhk
@kd4dhk 3 года назад
Also, you might see packs on ebay that say theyre 99AHr and the use 18650 cells in a 13s3p configuration which would mean each cell is 33AHr. 33AHr 18650 cells dont exist, theyre lying. In fact, 10AHr 18650 cells dont exist. An 18650 cell is only capable of around 3AHr, maybe a little more so a 13s3p pack that uses 18650s cant really have a capacity more than 9AHr.
@kd4dhk
@kd4dhk 3 года назад
The 'battery gauge' on the display is measuring the battery voltage. Batteries that cant discharge enough current to satisfy the controller will dip in voltage significantly and I can assure you that a $150 20AHr battery cant discharge enough current. Thats why the gauge is saying your battery is low when the motor is pushing hard and then saying full when the motor isnt running. When you get to 1000+ watts at 48v, thats over 20amps. I used a 1500w 48v motor which draws almost 32amps and getting a battery pack that can continuously discharge that much wasnt easy. I ended up ordering 18650 cells and building my own pack. It was that, or paying $500+. I think youd be surprised how much more torque your motor would have if you got a battery that could keep up.
@kd4dhk
@kd4dhk 3 года назад
That voltage dip is also why the 'wattage readout' isnt making sense.

Your voltage sag is due to poor batteries. For your battery monitor to drop 3 bars on acceleration is a sign of poor quality batteries or high Internal Resistance on the cells. I built a 10ah 36V battery from dewalt tool batteries that was on clearance for $125, these had samsung cells that are rated at 25amp continuous discharge per cell. I go full throttle on my bike and it does not drop a single bar unless I'm going up a hill at dead start, then it will drop one bar and recover within 3 seconds while still ascending.

Well it can’t keep it fully charged but could help regenerate some power. Remember Physics 101 matter can’t be created or destroyed. If you had a generator on front wheel capable of fully recharging the battery while your going it would have to produce the same power your using. That said it would have so much drag it wouldn’t be practical. But if you had something very efficient you could possibly charge about 10-15% would help a bit but again not as a constant. As you’d have that given about of drag from energy you’re creating. Best way would be regenerative braking that if you’re coming to a stop you could engage. This could take all the kinetic force (Motion) and turn it into power (volts) to recharge the battery somewhat But for riding in the country or open trails it would be useless almost. For a city commute bike it might be a great idea IMO. even if it only recharges 10-15% that extends your range proportionally if you were getting 30 miles on a charge you’ll get 33-34.5 miles. The more you stop the more energy you regain. Tesla uses this strategy where you almost don’t need to apply the brakes.

on your handle bars ; you dont need the brake levels it came with. it only makes the hubb get hot when you use it... use your brake levels it has; if you have a gear knob on your right side you can switch it to your left side , (on some gear knobs).... that way you have room for your trottle on right side...... the bag that comes with your controller box , it sucks at the end you will end up using zip ties around your bag cause the zipper handle broke or the zipper came off from its teeth.....once you decide your like and your keeping it ,, you can cut off the wires that you will never going to use... for connections and get those out of your way and make room for : find a plastic box container that will fitfor your controller so that it can be water proof and find or make brackets to hold the container.....better than the bag it came with.......

Nice bike as for the odd watt reading this is because the sw 900 is a pretty crap display though it does work, the wat counter only goes up to 999 as it only had 3 digits and when you go over 1000 it takes of the first digit so 1200w becomes 200w and the Voilamart kit even though its stated as 1000w it can easily hit 1300w at times this is why you where seeing 300w while full throttle as it was really 1300w but only displaying the last 3 digits.

The reason the battery level seemingly drops when giving it the beans is because of something called voltage sag which happens under load.
@heatherwhite9630

How to fix that?
@TheGrayWolf81
@TheGrayWolf81 4 года назад
@@heatherwhite9630 It's not something you can "fix", it's just a characteristic of lithium ion batteries. The lower the internal resistance of the cells in the battery pack, the less sag there is. LiPo batteries typically don't have as much voltage sag. Either way, the voltage goes back up after you decrease the load.
@TheGrayWolf81

A more precise way to measure battery charge though is by using a separate display that measures current rather than voltage, also known as a "coulomb counter". This is how battery level is measured in your laptop or phone.
