Hey pals!
Just a short update from me! I filmed this last weekend but didn't have a chance to edit it as I've been out of town. Building this little quest editor to click through my game was a really fun break from the grant applications I've been doing and totally relieved a lot of stress that was building around managing quest content in Insignia.
I'm actually working on a steam page right now, so hopefully in future videos I can send you somewhere to wishlist it!
See you soon,
Adam

Sometimes I get more excited to design the tools to make my game than to make the game itself. The sense of completion to finish a tool and see it transform your process is so valueable when working on such long-term projects. Thanks for sharing!

This is really cool. Being able to extend tools is really awesome and is one of my favorite things to work on. Relieving that mental burden is great. Well done!

I absolutely love the new logo, Adam! You should probably make a video about Insignia's progress, people would be interested in all the enemy pixel art/animations (like the vines, dandelion spores, bees, etc.) and other stuff you made this year, like the forge and redesigning the portraits. You know, just casually talking about the new art for Insignia. Also, those thorn tiles you made for the game would make a fascinating vid. And a very useful one. Keep up the good work!

"Checking Scene Causality is Annoying" Void enters the chat with an Eclipse, likes this, and leaves. On topic: When one knows his gig, usually ends programming or creating something to simplify or automatize a repetitive and/or time-consuming task. Really cool stuff and achievement that will accelerate the workflow of your pipeline.

Great tool and video! I don't know if you already did that - I wasn't able to find it in your channel - but it would be really interesting to make a step back and see how you've designed the quests in the first place: how you structured them, how you managed all their dependencies, etc. Anyway, amazing work as usual!

Nice. I love stuff like this. It's probably worth researching how old school text adventures and point and click adventures were engineered. I suspect they solved quite a few similar issues. Especially text adventures which still are the best story games out. Mainly because you can just purely focus on story, so they ended up very complex and deep before graphics took over.

Early!! Been using your tutorials to build an isometric point and click game that hasn't really been done by anyone yet, as far as I can tell. You're going in the credits. Thanks for these.

Thats great. May I also suggest you one thing here. Maybe take a look at graph database? I personally can recommend a Neo4j to explore. Because you can scrap and build the entire game as a graph with all the quests and npc and everything easy to go over and manage! This is the datastructure you need. If you think this is a cool idea - write me, Adam. I am doing Neo4j sideprojects as a hobby (on a quite high level for a hobby haha) I built a tool that scrap C# code to build a graph of it (should match you needs). So it will be more like an experimenting here and there. Will be happy to help you with this project. Game is awesome. Pixels are amazing. Love watching your tutorials! Cheers!

Adam, Your videos have been the greatest inspiration for me throughout my pixelart/gamedev journey! they help me strive to become a better programmer, artist, and just overall better creative! Thank you always for your concise explanations, useful tips, and chipper attitude! Keep up the awesome work as always, I look forward to future videos and possibly streams, and will continue to strive to improve myself. -Digi

Brother, that is so cool. Keep up the great work. It's hard when you do a thing like this and try to explain it to a loved one and they are like "WOW that's great" and you know they have no clue how difficult, useful or mind bending what you just told them, is. Good job brother from one who knows what you did and the complexity behind it!!!!

That is quite an engineering feat. In my game I just keep an array of objects with IDs and some meta data about which ressource/chest/etc. is on which coordinate of the map, and if has been accessed by the player yet. I use the same system for NPCs and their quest. Of course, your game seems much more complex, so I'm sure you have your reasons for going this way.

Oooh, I'm going to be using this as inspiration to do the old "Secret Passcode Screen" mapping with specific save-states baked into the game. (For those repeat players that want to get to their favourite moment quick. [I may have just finished playing MegaMan X])

This is the type of situation you want a console inside your game. Assets like Quantum Consoles and such. No need to make custom files or tools at all, just pop the console, set whatever you want to set, and bam!

Congratulations, this looks so useful to you. I feel like you buried the lead and could make a whole video about the shift in attitude you shared in the last few seconds. "Could I just finish the game content now?" is a shocking thing to elicit from a tool that took 2 days (while sick) of investment to develop.
@AdamCYounis
@AdamCYounis 18 дней назад
Unfortunately "the content being far easier to manage" is only one of many challenges to releasing a game successfully, so it feels like less of a win. There's also ensuring the game is fun, marketable, secures funding, is project-managed correctly, etc!

2 days well spend. It's systems like this that makes game dev effecient and fun again. It's not "fun" when a project becomes complex and hard to figure out!

Does anyone here know how to code a game like "evil Tonight" I'm working on a big project. But first want to make a horde demo for everyone to play first before the full game gets developed I want the looting mechanics to be like resident evil 4 especially with the inventory system. I'll explain more details if you do know how to do it.
