I am a 30 year welder. Just a little helpful advice. If you weld an a dirty bucket, before welding the seam, burn the joint to glowing red with a torch and let it cool. If you need to close a gap in metal, first tack weld the gap, then hit it with a hammer when it is still hot (glowing red). It’s a technique called hot tacking. And when welding thick material, pre heat the metal to help it penetrate. I have fixed hundreds of buckets. Have a great day.

when i was a grease monkey in the 70s, i had to rebuild the swing cylinders on a ford backhoe twice the size of that toy. each cylinder was 6 inches in diameter and about 4 feet long. it was not easy as i had very few tools to work with. i had to pin the cylinder to a truck bumper and use another vehicle to pull the piston. i am jealous of your shop and tools, stuff i could not even dream about! i pulled the engine head off the tractor with a hoist to replace a bad valve seat. the oil pan was cast iron an inch thick and weighed more than me! no power tools or air compressor or hydraulic jack. just a piece of greasy wood on wheels! ahhh, good old days!

Also pause on the sides as you cross the middle twice for each weave. I hope this helps.

Back when my father-in-law was a maintenance supervisor for a strip mine, the drag line used to strip the coal had a bucket large enough to park two school buses side by side in it and they would take such a beating they had two and one was always being rebuilt at any one time by two people. The rebuild cycle was 6 months so one was working while the other was being rebuilt. Any ground engagement tool takes a beating and stress cracks are common.

tks for posting another great vid. 18:44 is the moaning wail of a dry pivot point. not my equipment but from looks it would benefit from a full grease job. nice little rig but like comparable models, they're intended for light duty only. unfortunately, rentals get thoroughly abused. that's a load of stress cracks. now that it's really clean you can park it outside and alternately wet down and "exercise" it for a few days, then watch for orange streaks from otherwise invisible cracks. once identified would probably be a good idea to drill at end of each crack and then add a gusset to the repairs. also - current battery is a size or too larger than it should be. looks like the hold down stud will contact and wear through case.

The Terramite Backhoes came in both diesel and gasoline engines. I bought a new one about 1995. I still have it today and it still works great. Still has the same engine. I have used it to put in water lines, dug manholes, sewer lines, gas lines, underground electric lines, plus many septic tank systems. Dug out for basements, house footers, driveways, swimming pools, dug out tree stumps, plowed snow covered streets. Pulled cars and trucks out of ditches, pulled out 1/2 mile of fence posts, hauled concrete blocks on work site, drug trees to burn piles, plus many other types of jobs. This little machine is a real work horse. The only problem with it is all your buddies and neighbors want to borrow it all the time. Bought a small set of forks that attached to front bucket to load and unload clothes washers, cloth dryers, cook stoves and other appliances into and out of pickup truck beds. I paid $13,000.00 USD for it back when it was new.

the buckets I have seen were mostly made of Hardox500- which is about 50 HRC - a normal tool steel drill has about 60 HRC. not that fun to drill, not to mention the thickness on normal sized buckets is way bigger
@TheOcculus
@TheOcculus Год назад
@@olik136 The point angle makes a huge difference. Different materials call for differing point angles. HSS and nitrided Jobber drill points are typically 118° point angle. They're great for soft steel, aluminum, bronze, brass, etc. Consumer nitrided drills are usually not HSS tool steel so grinding them once they get dull is an exercise in futility. If you're drilling harder materials move to a 135° point cobalt bit and make sure it's sharp. The difference is instantly obvious. You won't walk through hardened tool steel but that bucket will drill just like he was able to drill it. Notice the step bit had a bit more difficulty. It's a nitrided bit and step bits are really only intended to drill 10ga sheet metal and thinner without deforming the edges of the hole. He got away with it and honestly I've done that too but "the right way" to drill it is to get out a larger cobalt bit but sometimes you don't have one of those. Do what works for ya and gets the job done.

Never touch a hydraulic line or fitting you expect may or may not be leaking, especially if there's any pressure in the system

Yup bit of paper towel saves you getting a hydraulic fluid shot, it's not that great in the blood stream.

I ran a grave digging business for years using this machine. Its closed down now, but I have a brand new crowd cylinder from terramite if you ever need it

Glad you were able to fabricate your own parts. I worked for Teramite a few years ago and unfortunately parts are no longer available. Actually I think the whole company decided to close. They were owned by the same family for many years. Then an overseas company bought them with no vision forward. Sad they were great machines and I had many customers with ones over 20 years old.
