I mean I assume you guys have looked this up already but pearls are actually impurities like grains of sand that enter an oyster's body, at which point the oyster produces a white substance that encases the impurity and hardens to protect the insides of the oyster. That is a pearl.

pearls IRL are grains of sand that the oysters coat in the same stuff they coat their shells in. since the oysters cant dislodge the grain of sand and it's annoying them the best next thing is to make it smooth and not itchy. To defend itself the clam incases it in a white substance that later hardens to create a pearl.
