I Can't Believe I've Made This Mistake AGAIN | Allotment Gardening For Beginners

I can't believe I've made a terrible mistake, again! The bean (and tomato) plants at the allotment have severe symptoms of aminopyralid herbicide damage from the horse manure.
We had minor signs of it last year in a couple of tomato plants, but in the end I shrugged it off as it was very minor... then decided to just use it again this year as normal. I've used horse manure for 5 years now without any issues... up to now!
The question is, can we save the beans? I've had to move the entire bamboo support over to a new bed and transplant all the beans. Lesson learnt now.
This isn't really the video I wanted to make this week, but I still hope you found it useful/informative nonetheless.
If you did, press the like button and show your support. It means a lot. If you haven't already subscribed, and want to learn and grow with me, then you may want to consider subscribing to my channel and clicking the 'bell' icon too, and you'll never miss any new videos!
Cheers!

I make my own liquid fertilisers from nettles, Dandy lions,lawn grass cuttings and I get wrotten bannans from my wholesaler with some sea weed, I have great results with the potatoes but don't have enough for all my crops so it's something I'll be hoping to scale up this autumn.

Oh Jim. So sorry you got contaminated manure. I think you can grow brassicas in that soil (don't take my word for it but I think you can). It s a testament to your building prowess that the bean support didn't fall to bits when you relocated it. Might the potatoes roots come through through the drainage holes of the pots into the soil? Just a thought. All the best. Mags

@downtoearthwithjim 3 месяца назад
Thanks Mags. Definitely a bummer. You'd have thought some thought And consideration would be taken as whoever is supplying it knows we are growing food and must know about the herbicide, surely. There's even equestrian runner in some batches of it! I was thinking that too as some others have said the same thing about the roots coming out the bottoms of the containers. I may work around this by applying a mulch beneath the containers like wood chip

@@downtoearthwithjim depends how much area you covered with it, Corn and onions will grow OK in it (but would you want to eat them!) you can remidiate with plants known to take it up, sudan grass, wheat, barley and bin the plants, then test with peas before commiting a crop to it; expensive option is to dig it all out and bin it, one of the US channels got a mycologist in to help with remidiation, lots of straw seeded with oyster mushies then bin the mushies, not sure how well it worked, add more OM and keep it wet to speed up the chemical breakdown and dilute it seems to be the most common solution, I ended up selling the land after 4yrs so not completely sure it was completely gone. It did encourage me to become a composting expert and become totally self sufficient in compost tho.

Shame, how disappointing, hope they recover in their new bed, at least you have back ups in. I dont have a problem with slugs, but black ants are everywhere on my plot, I'm uncovering new nests all over the place, I was weeding beds today and uncovering nests under the soil, even have a large one in my compost bin! Never had so many as I have this year. I'm using a red fine granulated killer, containing sugar which, apparently the ants take back to the nest. Can't remember the name of the stuff off hand - anyone else know if its any good, or have tips on how to get rid of them?
@downtoearthwithjim

I wish the ants I had were black. They're red ones on my plot, and the nests are everywhere too. Literally. In and under pots, in corners of beds.. they sting real bad. Seem to be getting worse every year! I've started using diatomaceous earth which is a time consuming way but organic

I first heard about this troubling issue on another channel of a London allotment. She said she only had one 'bad' bag, so I really hope you have the same luck. Even so, I think it's smart to find another way of beefing up your soil until the trouble is sorted out. Got any comfrey?? And can you lay down some chopped autumn leaves? Either way, your rescue is just about the most optimistic thing I've seen in a long time and I really hope it does the trick.
@downtoearthwithjim
@downtoearthwithjim 3 месяца назад
Thank you! I really do hope it's just one batch. As I said in the video, it's this bean bed and one raised bed in the polytunnel with the tomatoes in. I think I'll have a harder time clearing the polytunnel bed of the stuff. Time will tell, but it looks like I'll be limited to what I can grow in these affected beds for the next couple of years

maybe try find a horse stables a local one what has just its own from cleaning out the stables that might be a way sorting it. my mums allotment her partner uses horse poo and not having issues but that in wales where a lot more sheep farming than crops and he gets his from a local stables for very cheap. this year im using a SHREDDED HORSE MANURE compost COUNTRY MANOR what is not so bad but using it in pots and deeper in to the pots so no weeds, but had the odd mushroom hat not that bad, what they say horse manure is composted for at least 16 weeks at a temperature that will kill seeds, pathogens and fly larva. and so far it seems good and no woodchippings. as i got no farm / horse stables close by and most crop fields i need to order elsewhere but that stuff was only £15 for 60l so not bad for online but my mums partner he pay few £ for that. depends where you can get it i feel issue, but if you can get chicken poo and it works just as well why not, but keep soil good a bit horse manure is great every now and again if you can get it from a good reliable place

@@downtoearthwithjim its not a good thing with herbicide and as it in i guess one big pile you prob have to start over with a new pile if you started getting it without, but over time wont' it be washed out and start to compost because that may be a solution to use it later down the line. i might even try chicken poo next time because its far less weight that 60 l bag can get box pellets 2.5kg for a £10 im pretty sure that box will go a log way so it work out cheaper, for me it cutting the costs down so reason i move from liquid to horse what huge saving but if other option reducing costs why not i try that and for now most my things are very large pots chicken poo might just be more easy that having to make a mix, when i finally get an allotment im sure go to use the cheapest way, but i will sure make my own compost and that should be full of goodness so if it stays cheap chicken poo might also be a good option , trying to get back in the allotment my granddad worked for decades and its only around 100 meter from my house so it be easy to work and short walk most tools can stay at home but as bad health im looking at options to make it a tad more easy so prob do a lot more under cover and a good section for roots but unsure at the mo, but the tape seeds you can get that make life more easy as they already spaced out so just lay out the tape and cover after you loosened the soil up

The spuds in buckets will put their roots through the holes in the bottom of those tubs into the contaminated ground (some people bury them a couple of inches deep specifically for that). I read a while ago it only takes one part in a billion of that weedkiller to kill your plants. You can always grow Sweetcorn in the ex-bean bed, but it's probably worth checking if you can compost that, or if that in turn will also become contaminated.

I’ve had similar issues and I’ve not manured that bed in years as I don’t grow legumes in manured soil. I think it’s the cold weather, especially at night. Although if there are any herbicides in your manure it would definitely make the issue worse.
