Fun fact for Sarah of all trades: _"In 1946 the first Toyota sewing machine was constructed under the strict supervision of Kiichiro Toyoda himself, the founder of TOYOTA Motor Corporation."_ Toyota sewing machines are made by Aisin, a member of Toyota Group. 🧐

Just hilarious, I've sewn leather and vinyl for 40 years and you really took to it like everything else you tackle. Holding the bobbin thread for the first three stitches is the only advice I'd add. You're a champion at everything. 😂

Oh, gurl! I have sewing for about 50 years. I wish I were in your town to do this for you. You did a terrific job setting up that machine and bending it to your will. Well done! Congratulations! P.S. Thanks for keeping in all the advice on the machine. I have been thinking of getting one so I can make some waterproof winter shoe liners out of inner tubes or fire hose for our unhoused folks here in St. Louis.

The reason for that “double stitch” near the end was that’s where their bobbin thread ran out so they restarted a few stitches back then went in reverse then forward to lock the new thread.

I haven't sewn car upholstery since 1977, but back then my dad rented a 1/2 horsepower sewing machine with a clutch. Scary beast, but it handled multiple layers of Naugahyde with ease. Usually four layers, the two separate pieces plus the looped bead. I'm glad he rented that beast.

That’s not a messed up where it’s double stitched, they ran out and backed over there work to make a stronger ended point and then that little skip you see is where they continued. Doesn’t happen often but it does occasionally. You see it a lot more on clothing.

I bought a Sailrite machine. They are oringally designed to be portable so you can fix sails while at sea, including a case that makes it easy to store and lug around. You can plug them in but you can also use some of the models manually. Compact, but you can still work on something as big as a main sail with some creativity. Love the machine. It will stitch through layers of heavy materials like it's any Tuesday and mend a sock if you need to do that. The customer service is so awsome, they will help you with anything. They have tons of how-to videos, you can call them with questions. They will even make new videos to show you something specific if they don't already have one. I can't say enough positive things about them and their machines. I don't know anyone that is disappointed with a Sailrite machine unless they didn't buy enough machine trying to be a cheap-ass.
