Unfortunately, if you don't know what your are doing in the first place, all the advice is meaningless and the shoddy work will be tiled over before you know it. It's my understanding that, in Victoria, there is no requirement for waterproofing to be inspected before tiling is done and there was no waterproofing licence requirement until maybe recently. .

@@jg7038 the issues comes down to whether this guy claimed he knew how to do this job. Or if the guy hiring him didn't care to check if he knew. He could have literally just done what his guy did and told him in 5 minutes exactly how it needed doing. What surprises me is good builders are absolutely pedantic about waterproofing. I've had two bathrooms done and both builders wanted to employ high quality water proofers so they wouldn't have issues down the track. Builders don't want to have replace bathrooms due to dodgy water proofing. Im shocked builders aren't supervising the waterproofing. In my two jobs both builders checked the water proofing thoroughly. Similarly although I didn't know what to look for the water proofing looked really well done. Its not rocket science you need to form a tub like structure with the waterproofing so the water has nowhere to go.

Fantastic to see a building inspection done the way they should be done, it was really good and professional the way you showed the water proofing guy the fault he needed to fix and why it needed to be done now rather that latter when there would be huge amounts of costs if it isn't fixed up now. I hope you never loose the passion for doing the right thing for your customers. God bless you

Scary that a "specialist waterproofer" is being schooled at basics. Cleaning a surface to stick anything to it is about as basic as it gets. Everyone should know that. This is simply bottom dollar getting the lazy quick job by someone who did a few hours of basic classes and is "qualified". Probably gets away with it by phoenixing companies every few years before his poor work becomes obvious. Really need to start naming and shaming these people with a national register.

My son is literally getting his bathroom done next week, we’ve done the demolition and the reason it has to be redone is because the shower leaked. The bathroom was there when they bought the house 6 months ago and the bathroom was only a couple of years old but someone didn’t do the wet seal properly. Thanks so much. Cheers Stuart, Canberra.

Genuinly curious and don't want to sound insensitive, but was this guy trained in Australia? He doesn't seem to know how to do his job and he's been left unsupervised. If you weren't there, the owner would be in a world of trouble once that home is built. I'm guessing this is not uncommon as well. How do these guys get their trade licences and who is checking their work is up to standard? I look at some of the homes in other countries and the workmanship here is so bad, I'm almost considering moving somewhere else. We are a wealthy and educated country, but there seems to be a real lack of care across several trades and industries. People take no pride in their work and don't care if they ruin someones home. It's pretty disgusting tbh.

I assume the builder has hired a contractor with a trade license for waterproofing. If so then the licence should be revoked and further training before reissuing. Mind you I wonder about the training!!

Having been a waterproofer / ceramic Tiler for 30 years over 10 years ago , this guy cannot be licensed, no primer looks like one coat , and doesn’t even know how to apply properly, maybe he needs to go do a course and buy a vacuum as well. That’s a disgrace. The builders need to do better when hiring these people they always go for the cheapest rather than the best, no comebacks is the only way to waterproof,

The QLD gov trains waterproofers in QLD. They don’t get refresher courses, check ups or updated standards. It causes so much damage and unnecessary cost. Of all the trades waterproofing needs the most attention.

I lived in an apartment in an inner suburb of Brisbane Australia. One evening there was a large bang from the bathroom. A water line had exploded under the sink. The water filled the bathroom with 200mm of water before I could even open the door. The water then filled the ceiling of the apartment underneath. The neighbour rang my doorbell and asked me to come look. Her whole living room ceiling had formed a gigantic balloon. I poked it with my finger and it popped. Hundreds of litres of water dropped into her living room floor and destroyed everything. It was because my bathroom wasn't waterproofed. The repairs ran over $75,000. The builder had to pay. Moral of the story....just do the waterproofing properly.

I get the impression theyre totally aware of the non compliant defects theyre leaving at sights. In order to fulfil their work to a compliant level it must just be an extrapain in the arse or cost them a lot more in labour. So they leave it until theyre caught and face zero consequences as per usual

Let the lesson commence... Reminds me with junior developers and showing them how many ways their code is insecure and not fault tolerant... Reminds me of the old saying, if builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilisation.. Although, from what your finding, Australia might be the first to go....

Lack of skill and knowledge is the future of building/manufacturing in this country. "Aussie made" will be as good as "China made", you can already see the signs. You reap what you sow, and we have sown bad seed, in poor ground, with little or no pest control. The education system is broken and unrepairable, under the current "two-party" system.

Why aren't home owners/builders doing their job? If you tell each contractor that an inspection will be carried out on their work and any work that doesn't meet the standards will be redone at their cost, including a penalty for holding the job up. This will also encourage other contractors, like tilers for example, not to tile over non-compliant work. The tradies themselves will push others not to cut corners. Consequences for actions, that's all that is required here.

A bit unrelated, but I found that my house HVAC ducts have large cut out holes facing up toward the floor joists. The installer used scrap pices or made mistakes so they just faced these pices upward, out of eye sight. The fuckers
