My diesel heater setup is a little different. After camping in a blizzard on one of my first outings with the heater, I was comfy and warm in subzero temps but parked in a windy area. So, I insulated the GFC side panels with frost king insulation. I did drill holes in the bed and cut out the bed rug for a Hcalory diesel heater unit on the passenger side rear of the bed. I tore out my double cab bench seat and made it into a jump seat couch in the GFC. I sleep on it more so than up in the tent. Having the dry air directed at the couch I can dry my feet and clothing etc. I did wrap my exhaust in manifold heat wrap tape. It can get really hot. It’s hard wired into my Renogy system and I use an app to turn on/off/adjust and monitor temp. Also with the air duct low in the camper I can use the modular cushions to block off the downstairs while sitting on the ‘couch’. I’ll create a small opening for air and run a fan with a tent window slightly ajar. It’s less space to heat when it gets really cold like -20F. At that level it’s been 73F in the camper without the diesel smell.

That sounds like an amazing setup! I've been thinking about getting some kind of insulation for the GFC panels so the Frost king insulation sounds like a good solution! Thats cool you re-purposed the cab bench for a couch in the GFC! I'm still debating on whether to do some kind of build in the back but a bench seat may be the first thing I do. I believe this diesel heater has bluetooth capability so i'll have to look into that for if I forget my remote or something. Thanks for the info ! Giving me more to think about with this ever growing setup, thanks for watching John!!

You only need to prime it if the tank was run dry, once primed it's good to go, just turn it on. The reason it smokes in the beginning is because you are flooding the burn chamber with fuel. Also, this will end up coking the burn chamber with excess soot. Just turn it on and let it rip.

Thank you! I realized that over the weekend when i used it, I didnt have to prime it just turned it on from the remote and it started up which was great! Thanks for the info and thanks for watching!

Nice Video. One thing you will find out, in very cold weather the shorter heat hose you use will allow more heat into the area you are trying to heat. Longer distance from the heater (the longer the heat tube) will have heat loss when more tube is exposed and will not heat well during really cold weather or wind. Just FYI Nice work with your videos.

Thank you so much for the shout out and the link. We really appreciate it! Note: This is a long comment only because we enjoy all you do and hope you might find some of these helpful or that you tweak some. So you can share with others! I don't think you've caved! You just realized, just like with those desserts, as we age we have different values and tastes. We just got back this weekend from camping in the snow on a mountain top. Everyone had different heating solutions. One woman had her electric blanket and hand warmers. Another woman had her Mr. Buddy Heater which she ran out of little green bottles. Another fellow had just picked up an Eco Flow along with the Wave2. He said 3 mins in it had a overheated code. So who knows what happened there. Our diesel heater set on low was like a sweat lodge 96f by morning it was 78f thanks to the GFC front windows being open. 🤣 The diesel heater is definitely one of the best values for the money. Not to mention amazing to have dry heat to keep the condensation at bay. Perfect for RTT or wedge campers. I have a few suggestions. Please replace your slinky hose with a traditional car heater hose. You can now buy 2 of the 6ft (2 meters - 76mm caliper) pipes with a coupler. You can see all the parts in one of our last videos diesel heater heating 2 vehicles. The slinky hose I do not recommend for 2 main reasons. 1) Limits Air Flow 2) Not rated or designed or intended for the heat output the diesel heaters put out. (Regarless what every RU-vidr says) Causing them to off gas. (Stinky!) The way you had it hanging in the morning is the best way to go off the spot where you fan was hanging. The towel trick for the window flap. Take a small towel or tiny blanket. Put it on top the hose then put each tail and cross over just like a ribbon 🎗 keeping the tails zipped out side. I've found this to be the simplest solution. The air hose you mentioned don’t bother doing anything with. People get confused the heat exchanger doesn't suck in any fumes and mix in the combuster. I'll see if I can share a good link. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zPCBTs4Fkp4.htmlsi=ocR6fsHDo0d2MfMx The longer exhaust is great we've actually picked up a smaller section but like to keeping it way from the GFC. Exhaust fumes can easly be moved by the wind. With your exhaust pipes for travel put a piece of paper towel in all ends. The black powdery soot is a nightmare when it gets on stuff or your hands. Or do sandwich bags and rubber bands. Traveling with the heater. Place in a contractor trash bag to avoid spills. Matt from Ozark Overland Adventures suggests tape on the vent hole of the fuel cap. Then he just loosens the cap when in use. LfBros makes the first NON spill gas cap set up with their diesel heater. Brilliant! While we loved the vertical diesel heater we don't miss having to put the exhaust pipe on every time at camp. We've since moved to the Hcalory (raising the bar) all in one in a case. Which has been growing on us with each use. I really like the box design they now have. We too got lots of great tips from YT Oxfoot. We still enjoy using the tire step for 2 reasons 1) Rain 2) Snow. Conclusion it keeps it off the ground. As much as we hate carrying one more thing it's totally worth it to US! The fellow with the Green Traction Boards and GFC. Two reasons not to put a Diesel heater on the roof. 1) Filling it up for fuel..if you camp more then one night! 2) Exhaust fumes at the same level as all your window on the GFC. I'll leave it at that! Last notes you normally find based on outside temps and the unit 2k, 5K, 8K. That typically you can use 1/2 gallon and 250 watts as a general base line for 7-8 hours run time for a 5k heater. I'd also put in my vote for a BedRug which has a R4 insulation and very comfy on your feet. Best money spent. We really love your channel! Keep doing what you're doing! The reduction in condensation is one of the biggest pros of this setup! It will definitely open the doors to more winter camping locations so i'm stoked to continue using this! Thank you for taking the time and writing all the tips above! I will definitely be upgrading the exhaust hose (I saw your other comment regarding links not posting, not sure why RU-vid does that but ill keep an eye on IG for links to it along with the other diesel heater hose into the tent. I was looking on the links on your Diesel heater video and the item doesnt seem available anymore to purchase? This is the one I grabbed from your video showing the Y splitter - amzn.to/3GgTBv5) Our last trip I already forgot a flathead to attach the exhaust hose lol! luckily someone had an spare flathead I could use to connect the hose, I'd love to travel with it already attached. The unit attached to the step isnt bad to travel with though, its not awkward at all so its been an easy item to throw into the back of the truck so i'm pretty happy with the step setup plus it keeps it off the ground to snow/rain etc like you said! Thanks again for all the information and tips! Much appreciated. And thanks for watching Mark & Teresa! Safe Travels and I hope you guys have a great start to the New Year!

My setup is a little different, but some things you can do to improve efficiency. I use insulated ducting, like you can get for a clothes dryer...not sure if you have the ability to add ducting to the intake of the heater (some don't have a lip for ducting for the intake, but you can make one so you can draw the warmer air from inside your truck back through the heater. It keeps the air in your truck circulating better (btw, since the diesel heater passes air over heated coils and not a flame you don't need to open windows, it's perfectly safe, but if you're skeptical, just put a CO2 monitor in the tent). If you make that false tail gate, I'd put two vent holes, one on each side. The short run from the heater make it the hot, and the long run back to the heater for the intake. Adding that intake to pull air from inside your truck and adding insulated ducting will make the entire system more efficient and comfortable since the air will circulate better, and you will use a lot less fuel.

And careful with your power cubes. Most 12v outlets are capped at 10amps so you can blow the fuse on heater start up. Usually they need 15 amps for glow plug then drop down to 1-2 amps running. Condensation won’t happen provided you are not keeping the units intake inside your tent. People do it cause they think it’s more efficient. It’s not that much more that it’s worth condensation. Just bring in fresh air and crack a window tiny bit.
@Kadenventures
@Kadenventures 4 месяца назад
Thanks for the tip! This power bank seems to be fine, i've used it with the diesel heater now about 3 times with no issue. So fingers crossed it doesnt blow a fuse anytime soon lol I plan on keeping the unit outside so the air intake always gets fresh air, i've had zero condensation issues thus far, super stoked with this setup! Great video coving your new heater. I have an all in one diesel heater also and have made a few mods. Purchased a 90 deg attachment for the exhaust pipe. Bending that pipe a few times may crack it and I wrapped the pipe with high temp tape. That pipe gets very hot to be around. Also purchased a metal attachment for the insulated tube. Works great. Good luck and enjoy hard work.

@Kadenventures 4 месяца назад
That 90 degree attachment is a great idea! I've been bending this pipe now a few times and I can tell I will definitely break it eventually especially when its cold out lol I was with a buddy camping over the weekend and he accidently had his exhaust next to the plastic flap behind his truck tire and it ended up melting a piece of it so i'm definitely paying attention to where i'm playing that thing with how hot it gets! I swapped out the cig plug on the heater and spliced in a DC5521 (4mm)end to use on the bluetti so you can use both the blanket and heater. Easy to do and works great for us. The smell is from attaching the hose directly to the heater which causes it to get too hot and gas off the smell from the inside of the hose. Use the more rigid pipe that came with the unit then use an adapter and attach the longer hose. to it. Smell goes away atleast it did for us.
@Popcornbeetle
@Popcornbeetle 4 месяца назад
Good idea! Does the dc5521 trip anything on the bluetti. I have an ecoflow that trips when using 12v so it’s useless with startup watt pull over 150.

I love that sunrise! I like using the electric blanket. Plus I have the innusalation for my RTT. My nose gets cold, but other than that I'm happy with the electric blanket. I did end up buying one more battery during pre-Christmas sales so that I could have one designated just for the blanket.
@Kadenventures

i've been thinking of adding some insulation for the RRT! That would definitely help with keeping the space a bit warmer for these cooler temps. The electric blanket is still one of the best ways to stay warm when winter camping outside of the diesel heater, a designated battery for it is definitely key though so that's a great choice. Cool vid. I've made some modifications to my CDH (Chinese Diesel Heater) which looks like an identical set-up as yours. I moved the fuel pump outside of the provided case and free suspended it in it's own insulated box to keep it quiet. I also took the cover and glued in some insulation leftover from some vinyl floor install to stop the "drum" effect the case had. Very quiet now. Edit: I also run it on high altitude mode at anything over 3k elevation and it works well, cuts fuel in half without cutting fan/air intake, and still plenty warm in the uninsulated Tepui tent in mid 20° temps.

That heater will open up a lot more winter camping for you. Nothing worse than waking up to a winter tequila sunrise after a cold, sleepless night. Funny, but if you wake up rested the desert is beautiful; if you wake up tired the desert is just sad dirt. I use a pipe-vented propane stove designed for ice fishing shacks. To get heat up to the penthouse I sleep on the long floor panel running fore and aft and then use only one of smaller square floor panels set mid way in the remaining open so heat can rise into the penthouse and so I don't fall through! You got it goin' on with that 6.5% under-the-bridge PBR!

It will definitely open up a low more winter camping, I took the wifey out this weekend and it dipped into the 30s and we kept really warm (she was skeptical but survived the night lol). So true about a sleepless night, I think that may be why a lot of people end up not liking camping is due to being uncomfortable. That sounds like a great setup! Is the heater buddy safer to use and more practical than diesel heater?
@Kadenventures
@Kadenventures 4 месяца назад
I don’t know if I would say the buddy is safer, the only safety concern I have for the buddy heater is accidentally tipping it over and burning whatever it falls into (it has a built in anti tip where it’ll shut off if it falls over). I haven’t done any research between the two in terms of safety but I’d say the diesel heater is safer compared to the open flame of a buddy, PLUS there is no condensation produced by the diesel so that alone id choose the diesel any day

Hey bro I live in Las Vegas also just camp in Lovell canyon this weekend it was cold I have a jumping jack trailer was thinking about this heater what tips do u have for me?
@Kadenventures
@Kadenventures 2 месяца назад
I think this setup would work well for a trailer if u want the flexibility to take it off and on, or id definitely consider a full diesel I stall so u don’t have to carry the extra gear around for the heater it would just be all encompassing.

Been on the fence as well and seeing all the prices come down has been nudging me towards. I seen the wheel step setup as well and already have a barely used wheel step so it would be a natural conversion. Did you hear the heater at all while in the tent? In the vid is was barely noticeable, but i know that's different in person. Where did you get the hoses? I think your vid has definitely convinced me. Thanks for the vid.
@Kadenventures
@Kadenventures 4 месяца назад
I barely heard the heater in the tent while it was running, the only thing i heard was the clicking from the fuel pump but it really wasnt noticeable. This particular heater is pretty quiet luckily, I camped with 2 other guys over the weekend both had diesel heaters (different ones) and mine was pretty quiet compared to theirs (one of their diesel heaters was also double the price lol) He's also been having a few issues with their more expensive diesel heater, its been giving an error and stopped working halfway through the night when we camped. This unit I got has been solid, runs everytime with no issues or errors that I've encountered so overall i'm pretty happy with this particular unit. I got the hose from Amazon ($12) - this one here: amzn.to/3SchGJW And this is the diesel heater unit - LDTHOPI Diesel Heater: amzn.to/3RNQlN0 Glad it was helpful, thanks man!

Does it make that constant " wash machine " noise all the time when it is running?
@Kadenventures
@Kadenventures 4 месяца назад
Yes, it does run a low hum while its running (its a bit loud at the beginning but then calms down after the heater warms up) but its honestly not that noisy from within the tent, you'll hear a clicking noise from the fuel pump as well which isnt bad either.

Thank you! I've been saying that for some time on our channel. Not to mention, it slows down air flow. If folks actually used a gauge for all the off gassing, they'd be shocked! We use traditional car heater hose 6ft, 2 sections with a couple. You get a bit of the off gassing from the coupler. I like to set them out in the sun for some time before using them. 😊
