I changed my mind about this set of plastic toy soldiers. Airfix WW2 Russian Infantry.

Sometimes you have re-evaluate the way you look at and feel about a set of toy soldiers.
In 1969 Airfix released their brown boxes of 1/32 scale toy soldiers.
They were by far better then anything available at the time.
1969 saw the release of 5 sets.
-German Infantry
-US Infantry
-Russian Infantry
-British Commandos
-British Paratroops (which was the only set released in 1968)
The next few years saw the release of 4 more sets.
-British 8th Army
-German Afrika Korps
-Japanese Infantry
-Australian Infantry

This is a classic "Shooter Guys" set. These guys are putting lead down range, not doing disco steps as they throw a small grenade! The Australians are similar in this way, lots of weapons pointing in the direction of the enemy. A great set, I have many of them in two colors.

Hello because of you and your channel I’ve taken the plunge . I went to the model shop near my house the other day and saw the ones that were made only last year Rubbish I’m bidding on four boxes on eBay. German infantry. British Gurkhas , a box of Japanese 🇯🇵 infantry , one box of British paratroopers , I had them as a child. My favourite was the German infantry which were grey. I’m quietly confident I’m going to win the bid so thank you to you. I’ve started a new hobby the ones that I made today Rubbish the ones from the 1970s are the best. They’re not as expensive as I thought. Regards DSM UK 🇬🇧

The only thing i found unrealistic about these russian figures as a kid back in the 70s and 80s was their equipment being a little minimal.aside from one ammo pouch they had nothing hanging from their belts. And they are all wearing summer uniforms so its hard to play in a winter setting. 🥶
@Roberto-tu5re
@Roberto-tu5re 19 дней назад
I always thought the Russian set had so much detail such as the guy laying down feeding the round drum on the machine gun. But then looking back now and based on war time films the Russian troops carried more kit, like a blanket roll over the shoulder, maybe one or two should have a forage cap. Still as a child they put up a fight against the Germans on my bedroom floor, great video.

Beautifully sculpted figures, the only thing I would fault them for is the weapons look a trifle small to me. I've seen a PPSh first hand and it wasn't exactly small. The prone guy throwing the grenade was my fave as a kid, I thought that was really interesting.

I recall having the russians in a dark reddish brown colour in the late 80s, but that might have been one of those unlicensed Hong Kong copy sets. Many of the Airfix figures showed up in those (German infantry, 8th Army, US infantry, UK paras, russians) which were sold in plastic bags in supermarkets, usually with some flags and vehicles thrown in.

@Twirlyhead
@Twirlyhead 5 месяцев назад
@@I_Don_t_want_a_handle Of their early 1/32 scale sets I think they went down to 1/72 with German Infantry, Afrika Korps, Eighth Army and British Commandos. The WW2 ones they didn't do but would have been great were Japanese Infantry, American Infantry, Russian Infantry and British Paratroops. The later sets I think were developed concurrently in both scales. Bit of trivia: they did shrink just the prone machine-gunner from the 1/32 Japanese Infantry and add it to the old 1/72 set and had also done the same with 2x submachine-gunners in the Afrika Korps set prior to release of the complete new set.
@Verdunveteran
@Verdunveteran 5 месяцев назад
well they did. I had an Airfix 1/72 scale Russian infantry set as a teen in the late 1990's. I probably still have the figures somewere, but I doubt I still have the box. I had most off the Airfix Second World War 1/72 sets back then: German, British, Russian, Japanese infantry, Brittish commandos and paratroopers, US Marines, German Fallschirmjägers, British 8th Army, German Afrika Korps, German Gebirgsjäger and the US paratroopers. Some were good and accurate sets, while some were really shitty in terms of historical accuracy. But atleast none of Second World War sets were as horrible ass ALL the Airfix First World War 1/72 scale figures. Man, they were so bad both in terms of poses but especially when it came to historical accuracy that one could puke!

@@Verdunveteran No, they never shrunk the 1/32 Russians to 1/72. Just kept the old 1/72 set which has even been reissued despite its weakness. As for the WW1 sets, the French come out a little better as the helmets are more consistent with beyond early war.

I also had the 1973 target box. The Airfix soldiers were generally good figures, I had the Aussies and Japanese too for a good rumble in the jungle, but no Germans as a counterpart for the Red army. But I loved those russians with their hard mugs, intimidating pose with the machine-guns and that dull grey tone. Oddly enough, I saw them as enforcers of a futuristic totalitarian regime in the vein of Orwell's 1984. Can't remember where did I get that notion, as I was just 6-8 years old. Some comics I read, probably. Nothing to do with the Soviet Union, which I didn't know back then, it was just a weird idea.

What a great memories about those Airfix soldiers here in Finland. I had many sets of those, also Russian Infantry soldiers, but no one liked them. As a Swede you know why😂. However I saved them years, until they came so brittle, that they distroyed in the box. The gun you asked is light machinegun DP 28 Degtaryav or Degtaryev. It also got nickname Emma here in Finland. I liked it, it was one of may first sets, as was the 1/72 (which was good as well with totaly different poses. similar to some other sets). i played them a lot, they were usuable for a lot of east block armies and episodes. Box art was good. I woukld have prefered 15 different Poses. The lying Machine gunner does't neeed an ammo loader this time. The lying grenade throwing soldier is good in this case, similar to the german Fallschirmjäger Para. They are almost all in action and or shooting, this is what I liked. Some better appaeling sets to me like the british paras lose on too many marching guarding patroling poses. Soviets are not Russians, Russsians are not Soviets. I had ressentiments, too. The Germans were the good guys, by the way. They must be, there are four german sets alone, 🙂 The officer is good but, in contrast to all other figures here, not in motion. I would have, as with all other kits, preferred an officer like the german or the us army ranger marine set. Leading the front troops. There is a famous fotography, you know?? They don't quite fit to the early war germans set, which is not their fault.

Great in-depth look at these figures! Since I prefer only the German soldiers in my own collection to be grey, I actually really like the look of the ‘86 dark orange/brown Russians! The machine gun is a DP-27, though many also refer to it as a DP-28. The “DP” standing for the “dinner plate” shape of the magazine lol.

Degtyaryova Pekhotny (DP) means literally: "Degtyaryov's infantry machine gun" Red Army soldiers nicknamed it the 'record player'

Some of the airfix have some questionable choices of weapon, for example: the us standing rifle man has m1 carbine instead of the more iconic m1 garand, and in this case, the svt 40 instead of the mosin nagant. But anyways, nice figures

Hur många olika "targetboxes" släpptes i Sverige? Jag har hittat 18 olika arméer när det kommer till 1/32 skalan. Fanns det fler? mvh/Mr.V
