It’s been a long, challenging journey, but I’m excited to finally share the transformation of my grandma’s house with you. 🏡✨ This house has been a part of my family for generations-it’s where my dad grew up, and where my sister and I spent countless hours with our grandparents and great-grandparents. Though the road to completion hasn’t been easy, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made.
In this video, you’ll see the nearly finished interior of my grandma’s house. The inside is about 85% done, with the exterior and landscaping still to come. Moving from a 600 sqft apartment to this 3,100 sqft home has been an adjustment, so there’s still decorating to be done, but I wanted to share the progress so far. I also point out some of the cherished items passed down to me from my family, including my grandma’s beloved dinner bell.
While my grandma Lovie never got to see the completed house before she passed away in October 2023, she was involved in the planning and saw the design renderings before the project began. This video is being published on October 7th, 2024. Just shy of a year since her passing. It’s been one of the hardest years of my life, and the renovation was filled with its own set of challenges, which I’ll cover in a later video.
For now, join me in taking a look at what we’ve accomplished so far. This house carries so much history and emotion for me, and I’m honored to continue adding to its legacy.
🎥 What you’ll see in this video:
• A nearly completed interior renovation-about 85% finished 🛋️
• Personal items passed down through generations, like my grandma’s dinner bell 🕭
• My reflections on the challenges of this renovation and moving into a larger space 🏠
• A heartfelt tour of the place my family called home for years, now brought into the modern day with care and love 💖
Thank you for being a part of this journey. I hope this video inspires you to treasure your family homes and the memories they hold.

Beautiful! I remember from your last video that your grandma said to make it your own, and I thought that was such a sweet and loving thing to tell you. You've done a beautiful job and I love how you honor your family throughout the house. ❤

Thank you so much! Lovie was one of the greatest supporters in my life. I come from a long legacy of hardworking folks who built runways for their children to prosper, always creating a solid foundation to build upon. I owe so much of my success to them and those values, so honoring them in my home and in how I plan to raise my future children is something I take pretty seriously. I really appreciate your kindness. Thank you for watching! 🙌🏼

I love that you kept the original spirit of the house while still making it your own. Also very smart to leave yourself the option of making changes in the future as your life evolves. You still have mostly a blank canvas there. The dinner bell is the sweetest. I had a close relationship with my grandmother too, so it brought a little tear to my eye. You really have honored her. Enjoy your “new” home!

Gen X chiming in! So, while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea (taking down walls etc.) you did exactly what your grandmother said to do and made it your own! You struck a perfect balance between updating it and holding onto a lot of memories through pieces of furniture throughout the home. The MCM mixed with modern furniture is perfect too! Great job!

Pocket doors would work for the primary to give you privacy whenever you want it and hidden in the walls whenever you don’t. Nicely done renovation! Hopefully you make a garage makeover video, you can raise those door entrances and get a taller door. Look into a roll up door if you’re thinking about doing a 4 post lift, will give you extra space.

@@GavinMalm A parlor was usually a "formal living room" for when guests were over and/or for entertaining purposes. I never understood the point of them; if I had one now, the family living room would probably always be messy because no guest would ever see it lol.

Forget the pony wall. Really dates the room. And replace the old doors. Looks good!
@GavinMalm
@GavinMalm 5 дней назад
I absolutely hate the pony wall. It was supposed to be an actual bar top, and this is one of many issues I was left with to figure out after the designer and contractor wouldn’t take ownership of their mistakes and didn't quote the entire scope of work by almost 40k. I was planning on doing doors immediately when moving in but I had a mess on my hands.

I guess I was one of those that was shocked by the removal of all the walls. I see now it was a good idea. Its opened more light into the home 🏠 😮 Well you sure are a lucky guy inheriting this home they don’t build quality homes like these. Maybe we could see more of the 🏠 home towards the end you seem to give us all you like. But. I am interested in this transformation 🤷‍♀️. Hello from 🇨🇦👍🇺🇸🙌. That fan reminds me of a helicopter 🚁

Hello from Georgia! I'm a new subscriber. I'm a 75 yr old widow and I've always enjoyed home renovations. I love the bell you kept in the kitchen and I love that you share your memories & talk fondly of your grandmother . I love the backsplash in the kitchen. Maybe the ceiling fan in the living area should have been a flush mount? I agree with you about the vanities. I love you went with white walls. Love what you have done so far. how lucky you are to have such a nice garage. We had a huge garage at our last house. It would hold four cars, but it was drive under and I hated the steps. I moved after my husband passed away to a ranch house, no steps. Keep up the good work, a little at a time! Are those Belmont cabinets, metal or wood?

I look forward to seeing some color. It’s a great idea to wait until you’ve selected a majority of the furnishings before choosing colors. Although this is far from my personal taste, you’ve done a great job (and your grandmother’s dinner bell is a nice touch)!

I agree; I have the recessed lighting mainly for when I have parties. I plan on using more lamps in the bedrooms and swapping out the dining room, kitchen, and bathroom lights for something more beautiful than the halo rings and pendants for more dynamic and period-correct mid-century styles. Thank you for stopping by and providing some constructive criticism. I appreciate it. 🙌🏼

Such a great question! That’s part of why the house renovations didn’t turn out the way I had hoped. It was imperative to me that the windows be replaced with vinyl thermal double pane windows, as the house still had/has its original windows. I’ll explain it all in a video soon. Let’s just say things went well over budget, not by my choosing.

I think you did a fine job. Your choices are clean and sleek. I wouldn’t mind them at all. I don’t think the original house had that much character. Some spindled areas, but they weren’t particularly attractive. I like a mostly separate kitchen because I have a lot of appliances and cookware as I am a cook and baker, but your kitchen with the pantry would work well. The only thing I don’t care for, but appreciate your affection for, is the pool table just as you enter the house. Very frat house-ish. As long as it never smells like stale beer, you’re good. Well done. Looking forward to what changes will be made to the wrought iron outside.

@GavinMalm
@GavinMalm 6 дней назад
Agreed! I haven't decided yet on many of the rooms. I won’t add color to a room until I know the furnishings for that particular room. You can paint over white very easily, so until I decide on the furniture that’s going into a room, I won’t decide on accents or themes for a room. Give me some ideas! Thanks for watching!

@GavinMalm 6 дней назад
Great question! I initially planned to install new black vinyl thermal double-pane windows, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it didn't work out as I had hoped. I'll explain more later, but it's important to ensure that whoever is in charge of designing and managing the project accurately quotes and communicates the full scope of the job. This renovation ended up being underquoted by upwards of $40,000, so I had to make some tough decisions just to make the space livable. In addition to workmanship issues I’m still dealing with today.

How come you did not get rid of the step down to your living room from the dining room and make it one level only? Pocket doors to the bathroom in the master bedroom would be good.
@GavinMalm
@GavinMalm 4 дня назад
The front door is at the step-down level, and the house is built on a concrete slab, so raising the floor would have been cost-prohibitive. There are studs in the wall supporting the glass door to the shower, so pocket doors were not an option for the primary bath. I’ll probably just put in French doors again when I upgrade all the doors to the house next year.
