I recently cooked and attended a month long Dzogchen silent retreat at ‪@PBCInternational‬ meditation center.
This is the recap. My priority was to cook for over 30 people, twice a day for 30 days completely plant based. Totalling over 1900 meals by the end of it. It was an honor and a pleasure to dedicate my time and efforts to support the sangha. May I continue to do meaningful things that are of benefit to others and myself.

One person. Cooking for ALL those people. No assistants. No sous chef. No prep cook. No dishwasher. Just one guy, doing it all. The ability to batch cook like that I found really mesmerizing, not to mention the execution of top-notch restaurant-quality meals in the process. The reunion with Frankie was the icing on the cake in this wonderful video. I like to call myself a Buddhist-Atheist, so this clip really resonated with me. 😃

Not taking away from this wonderful chef at all but there are a lot of places where people cook for thousands everyday at Hindu temples(the food is completely free most times).

Hi hi. Lifelong Buddhist here. Buddhism is naturally atheistic. Some of you might say wait hey Buddha talked about Devas, but none of that is a prerequisite or apart of Buddhist teaching. Buddhism has no belief in a creator. It’s naturally atheistic. So no need for mentioning haha 😂 Buddhism is human centric. First religion to exist that has no vertical connection to the divine but only a circular connection to the humane.

Matter and energy are neither created or destroyed, they merely change forms. Second .. your food looks AMAZING. My mouth was watering with every dish you made. If Mr Sarno was in the chef team at my next meditation retreat, the wholesome food would either finally help me enter the initial jhānas, or arouse wicked sense-desire about it through Māra. Whatever the consequence, now a craving aroused in me to propose him as the chef for my future Buddhist retreat in the UK. Thinking about the benefit percolated through sharing such a personal story, engaging in non-harm cooking, and promoting Buddhist spiritual values is very heart-warming. I was wrestling with my dog earlier this evening. She loves to wrestle on the bed. I'll grab her and flip her on her back and tickle her belly while she wriggles about biting on her favourite toy. Tonight she let out a scream I've never hear her make before. I must have caught her wrong or twisted something. She looked so betrayed. I hugged her and kissed her and apologised over and over. She was fine, no lasting damage and within a minute or two was leaping around like a loon again. She puts all of her trust in me and to think for even a second that I'd harm her purposefully nearly broke my heart. I don't know why I mention this, it just came up again in my mind. This is such a beautiful video and I adore the love you and Frankie share.

Derek, that moved me to tears, I was so touched by everything. I will soon be moving to an ashram in Switzerland where I'll be living from now on. so cool the loss triggered for you.. i find it so weird at funerals my family are heartbroken for the sick body we said goodbe to, but say hello to the burnt offering of what was well being maybe days before..then eat well.. i cant understand ow they dont see it! EVERything is connected. Birds outsdide are cooing becuase they want me to feed them something now.. Will give them seeds.

Grateful that you were able to film your time on this 30-day "quest" for quietness & meditation. So you filmed your time on top of everything else you did at your "retreat". Chopped all the veggies, cooked the food, & planned & cooked some of the next day's food at the same time, then washed all the pots & pans, then cleaned all the kitchen surfaces. Incredible. I would say not one person has the talent, physical strength, & mental fortitude to do that. But YOU DID IT ! I pray that time will serve you well & will be therapy & bring you clarity & even comfort you physically, mentally, emotionally, & spiritually. When I first went vegan, 12 years ago, I was so heartbroken and sad about everything I was learning about how animals are really treated that I almost didn't know what to do. It is not in my nature to be depressed and yet, it was hard dealing with other's ignorance and comments, etc. But then I met this vegan chef in Tucson, AZ - a guy who has been vegan for almost 40 years - and I asked him, "how do you handle it?" He said, "Cook with love. Make your meals full of love, and remember we have to create it for it to exist." He was so right. When I watch you, that is a truth you demonstrate so beautifully, not only in honoring your beloved but in adding that special ingredient into what you do. It's beautiful to see.
