I Cracked Rare BGS Graded Cards And Sent Them To PSA-Was It Worth It?

Cracking baseball cards out of a companies slab is common. A lot of us get nervous doing this however since you do not want to damage the card while cracking, and it is expensive to get cards graded. Recently, I decided to crack some of my PC cards out of BGS slabs and send them to PSA. The cost finally made sense, and I wanted to see how PSA would grade compared to BGS. I also break down my thoughts about cracking these cards and where I think PSA and BGS are headed in the future.

You know what doesn't get a lot of love? SGC? I love their slabs in vintage baseball. I can understand how they don't translate well to modern, but I think SGC does real well with vintage baseball. Also, the black and white makes the card look like it's dressed in a tuxedo :) Secondly, what do you suggest doing with vintage cards that are a little more arbitrary with grading? I have a 1986 Fleer MJ as a BGS 7, but I want to go over to PSA. Is that too risky to crack and re submit? Or should I use the crossover service?

@arkrazor354
@arkrazor354 4 месяца назад
Agree with a lot of this. Like BGS slabs better- sturdier. Subgrades are also nice. BGS has gone downhill for a lot of reasons. 1. Their advent of the BCCG and BVG brands in effect creates 3 different grading standards which leads to confusion (and perhaps inconsistency). 2. The Pristine fiascos they've dealt with and possible payola to certain vendors. 3. Their lack of presence in the marketplace (as you said). I've cracked 4 BGS cards to submit and not one of them came back as high as PSA. 2-9.5's, an 8.5, and a 9. They came back a 9, a 5.5 and a 9. The other one? MIN SIZE. I'm at a point now where I don't trust BGS slabs or standards.

The BGS 9.5 currently sells for more at around 800-1000 the psa 9 goes for around 650-700. I thought about trying to straight crossover it at first, but the odds of success on those are so low that I wanted to try it this way. This was just a test run for if I wanted to do it again.

Scottie, would you not consider just submitting cards like that still in slab to PSA for crossover? If not trying to get a bump in the grade it seems to be worth doing. I sent 3 BGS 9.5s with attempt to get 10s and got 1/3. PSA will allow you to set a minimum grade you will accept, and they do not crack your slab if they do not meet your criteria.

I’ve been considering cracking a few BGS slabs myself. The only thing holding me back is the possibility that BGS makes a comeback in the hobby. I’ve noticed that a ton of the things that were popular in the pandemic boom are starting to fade back towards the traditional hobby ways. I’m glad. There were some insane things happing that made no sense to collectors with decades in the hobby. At the peak, I remember seeing PSA 10 base Topps RCs selling for more in some cases than BGS 9.5 Bowman Chrome 1st autos. Made absolutely no sense.
@Spazza42
@Spazza42 9 месяцев назад
It’s the basic supply and demand problem at play. Pandemic hits = people stuck indoors - find old/new hobbies - demand skyrockets because people have a ton of spare time - prices go up. Pandemic ends and people return to their old hobbies - the ones that stay repopulate the supply by getting cards graded/buying and selling online. Prices tank because supply is up and demand is lower than 2020. It’s not just cards, stocks are down, entertainment is down and inflation is high (partially paying for the pandemic). It’s a good time to be in the hobby tbh, prices got stupid for no reason and dozens of YT channels popped up claiming to be mega collectors the whole time when they hadn’t been. The real surge was after Logan Paul’s PR on a Charizard card - where’s he now?

Buy the card not the grade or in this case the grader. I personally would rather have the Trout in that True Gem slab. A PSA 9 is basically an average or common grade for most modern cards. 10 or 20 years from now will PSA still be the leader? Where as a Gem Mint is a Gem Mint regardless if its PSA, Beckett or SGC. My question is why “crack” the true gem BGS case and not just send the whole thing to PSA and let them exam the card with you setting the minimum grade at a 10? I get the thought that you don’t want to influence the grader(“fresh eyes”) but it really goes both ways. It also influences the grader too lean towards a 10 grade if it’s at least a True Gem. I sent a Trout true gem BGS RC 9.5 in the slab with minimum grade set at a 10 and got a PSA 10 back. I currently have 3 True Gem BGS cards I’m going to send to PSA in the slabs and take my chances as the cards all look perfect to me. I also think the card community underestimates the fact that PSA WANTS THE POP COUNT CONTROL. It’s in there best interest to have the 10’s in their Pop not BGS. Thoughts??
@smizu1442
@smizu1442 Год назад
I did that twice because I had the same rationale as you did....twice the card got returned as min grade. I cracked out both and sent back to PSA...both came back 10s. I know different graders have different criteria, but I think if PSA converts too many BGS 9.5s to PSA 10s, they're essentially saying those grades are equal which I'm sure PSA doesn't believe so. Also, I have a bunch of big cards that I would love to cross, but because of PSAs value tiers, it would cost over a 1000 dollars to do each one, way too risky for me.
@ColemanSpecial
@ColemanSpecial Год назад
Totally agree with this, especially when you're working with BGS 9.5 true gem mint. I've had BGS 9's come back as 8's and but the only times I've sent in the 9.5s, they've come back as a 10, provided all the subgrades were also 9.5's. I also don't like cracking the cards myself. I just do the cross-over. As long as I feel confident that the card has a near flawless look and is correctly assessed by BGS, I see no reason why PSA would want to downgrade it to "control the population". All this conjecture about PSA doing population control is just sour grapes because their cards didn't grade out at a 10. There is no conspiracy here, they're just grading the cards. Are they holding a higher standard today? Perhaps. Is it difficult to tell the difference between a 9 and 10? Yes. Does it matter to collectors? Probably not. Does it matter to investors and flippers and dealers? Hell yes. But a 10 has to be scarce and difficult, otherwise, every card would be a Gem Mint 10, and then why bother even grading cards. For me, it's about being able to protect my collection and enjoy showing my cards off. But who doesn't love a PSA 10 right?

It's not just that Beckett has failed to keep up with competitors since the pandemic boom, but, the quality of their services has deteriorated in a big way in recent years. Might not be obvious since you only collect baseball, but, in soccer, they have graded so many beyond obviously trimmed high-value stickers as well as let through numerous outright counterfeits/fakes (e.g., the 2002 Panini Cristiano Ronaldo rookie sticker). Also, there have been far too many examples of blatant BGS overgrading the past few years - they are simply not running the tight ship that they used to. I recently traded away an F1 card that had been folded in half that I was sure would be a PSA 1 max (it was so bad that I thought it might even only get a PSA Auth designation). The guy I traded it to submitted it to BGS and it got...a 3.5!!! Absolutely absurd. I will still use BGS for autograph and thick cards because I like how they feel & display in the hefty cases, but, for everything else, I have switched over to other grading companies where I have more confidence in the grading.

I'm sticking with BGS. In the long term, subgrades will matter. In the long term, thick sturdy slabs will matter, In the long term, people will understand why BGS color code thier grades. " Gold is king" In the long term, people will realize a BGS 9.5 is almost just as equal to a PSA 10, because it's actuality HARDER to get a BGS 10 than it is to get a PSA 10. " Black Label is King" Only reason PSA is popular is because all the "newbies" that came into the hobby in 2019-20 were sheep following the masses, which is why many lost some value in thier cards. Sheep do sheep things.

Thank God there is someone who thinks along the lines as I do. PSA is junk t me. As a side note CSG is probably going to be the grading company to get into. They have made drastic changes to their company and they will be a strong force to be reckoned with in the future.

I have absolutely no love or affiliation for/with PSA. I believe they are probably the most corrupt grading company out there. They cater to their “Sheeple” as that one guy says a few comments before me. CSG is a grading company to get into. They are going to be making some noise in the very near future if they haven’t already. Everyone makes pointless comments about the “other” grading companies slabs. Yep, PSA is the king of all kings when it comes to having the ugliest slabs in the market. White sticker with a touch of Red and Black lettering, so beautiful that it makes the cards value increase 10 fold. They are not UV resistant, the cards flop around inside the slab and their grading is horrendous, yep all the more reason why they are the best!! Time for PSA to go down, just like that bank in Commifornia!!

BGS fell victim to the same thing that happened to American cars in the 80's. The American auto companies just assumed that people would continue to buy their vehicles. So they did little upgrade quality, models, options, etc. Then the foreign auto makers caught up, however now American made vehicles have regained a strong foothold in the market. BGS will get back on track.

cut top right corner with a pair of dykes or cutters,stick a big screwdriver in across the flip and lift up n twist, that should do it! bgs has cards come in a sleeve so tap card to bottom of sleeve and cut across the top with scissors! your goal is to crack in 2 big pieces avoid cracking little pieces

Bgs doesn't need to do anything because they are the strictest grading company because they give you a 4-tier breakdown on why the card got this grade. The only reason why PSA is king is because of celebrities and infulencers also they give out 10's easier then bgs. You can find tons of PSA 10 that are not 10. Where as bgs gives you an accurate grade and just about 99% of the time a bgs grade is legit. A bgs 10 will outsell a psa 10 all day long. Bgs have another level with a black label 10 and those are priceless. True collectors want BGS. A BGS 9.5 is gem mint just like a PSA 10 is gem mint. so why would a PSA 10 sell for a lot more when both cards are gem mint? People either don't know the difference or there just fanboys of PSA or they want the 10 whereas BGS is harder to get a 10.

@danielrosenfield9608

BGS is by far the superior grader. Too many PSA 10's out there that are obviously off center. The reason the "market" prefers PSA 10's over BGS 9.5's is because the market cannot realize that PSA 10 = BGS 9.5. Toss is the historical drama of doctored/altered/trimmed cards to get higher grades and there should be NO reason PSA is considered the top grading company. Oh yeah, they are owned by the same company that bought Goldin Auctions.......conflict of interest? I would say so. This is the reality we are in. Human's determine the market and we know human's are generally not very bright. Everyone has their preference and is entitled to their opinion (which I am doing as well). If I am shopping for graded cards, I will go SGC or BVG for Vintage. I prefer BGS for modern cards. I won't even send in a prospect or rookie card to get graded until they are established. I learned that lesson with a few "can't miss" prospects. Someday, I hope human's will realize true data, but then again, the movie Idocracy is becoming more reality as each day passes. I better start buying up stock in Gatorade.....

PSA certainly wins on value. But they are not very good otherwise. Cheap slabs, ugly labels, inconsistent grading and expensive. Imo both psa and bgs are outdated companies that dont deserve to be at the top anymore. Unfortunately people think of graded cards as investments so they have a vested interest in keeping the status quo.
