There's a sneaky hidden value that stems from not having the funds to buy a ready to go sailboat, having courage to be a beginner moving forward anyhow taking on such a daunting project. It is the education and skills you will build out of necessity along the way that you will carry for the rest of your life. Not to mention the fortitude gained through experience to take on other intimidating ventures.

doing a extra day filling and sanding and a dry test fit of the rail really shows how far your craftmanship has come , correct me if im wrong, but i think mark from 12 months ago would of tried to rush it and then do it a second time. Great to see such growth in a single project.

Kia Ora lad. A pal of mine was restoring a 40ft boat in a huge shed, a chap started to build a 45ft boat alongside. The new build was finished and in the water way ahead of my pals. Professional boat builders tell me it’s always cheaper, easier, quicker to build new! I know you don’t want to hear this so please carry on entertaining those of us watching. Rog

Next time you put tape on a drill simply fold one short length around the drill so it looks like a flag. The spinning flag will sweep the swarf away when you reach the required depth. Much easier to see.

After squeezing filler into the screw holes you can poke a wooden cooking skewer in to remove air bubbles, then press it all the way in and snip it flush...
@basilbrushbooshieboosh5302
@basilbrushbooshieboosh5302 4 месяца назад
A way to fill the holes deeper is to be ready with needled syringe, plaster on your epoxy, syringe air out from the hole spot, plaster again, syringe again, plaster again, etc till you can't suck any more air out with he syringe. Having a large width needle, comparatively to medical size ones, on it is essential though.

Plane with the plank, always, to avoid all the chipouts. A belt sander or disc sander works well for grinding out scarf joints.... I know there's a formula for scarf joints but I usually apply 2x the width or more is better.
@grahamlongley8298
@grahamlongley8298 4 месяца назад
Instead of buying an expensive thick piece of timber then spending ages machining the middle out & turning it into chips may I suggest an alternative. buy a thinner timber. Then cut the old rail into 2 thin strips which you pin & glue on to the sides of the new wood. Actually if your new plank was wide enough you could have cut the strips from the extra width. But with the 2 strips fitted you automatically have the groove. No wear & tear on the tools. Quicker to do. You have everything encased in epoxy so no problem with the joints.

Nice work mate, you’ll really thank yourself down the track for taking the time to get things right as you seem to be doing. For what it’s worth a “toe rail” (ie not" tow rear”) is a rail around a deck that quite literally gives you something to hang onto with your toes, particularly on a monohull when the boat is heeling.

A trick to get the air out from behind an area your filling is to use a stirring straw and a syringe to suck the air out. You can do it while filling if you have help, but it works wonders for holes need filing.

Just a suggestion but I would consider tightening your spring lines and the bow and stern lines. Keep these lines long and tight. Consider also making the lines fixed at the dock and controlling them, tightening and loosening, on the boat. This will keep your yacht from moving side to side and away from the dock while working on the boat.
