I needed to juice up in Koppang so I could reach Elverum supercharger. But unfortunately, the frunk couldn't be opened. I tried all the tricks to open it, including emergency release in the bumper. All my cables and adapters were in the frunk.
The problem was that I had 145 km of range and was 90 km away from supercharger. Because I was pulling a trailer, I needed at least 200 km of range.
I had some options:
1. Leave the trailer. Drive 90 km to supercharger. Charge to 90 %. Drive 90 km back and drive with the trailer to the supercharger.
2. Ask if someone has a CHAdeMO adapter or Type 2 cable and juice up on the way to the supercharger.
3. Hypermile with the trailer to save energy.
You can get free supercharging when buying a Tesla Model S or X by using my referral link:

I had a similar experience once. 60 miles to go to supercharger, and 52 miles range. Hyper in slow lane and got there with 4 miles left. But only decided to hyper mile after being shut out by Hilton at a destination charger. They would not let me charge since I was not staying there even after offering to pay them to just charge for a half hour.

Check in the front passenger foot well at the base of the dashboard, for an emergency lever release. I saw that secret in a RU-vid video.
@leesweet9
@leesweet9 6 лет назад
Mitchell Barnow For what car? The emergency release is in the bumper and he tried that. Looked like the actual latch had a problem. As we saw in the video, the car thought the latch was triggered. It showed the frunk was ‘open’ but the latch was still not actually released.

@popscottica
@popscottica 6 лет назад
evtrekker13 it’s for first responders in case of a crash, the battery emergency disconnect is in the frunk.
@CrazyRoadblockisbae
@CrazyRoadblockisbae 6 лет назад
Scott Fultz That doesn't make sense either because why would a first responder go under a potentially dangerous car to push a button while they could go in the cabin and pull a simple lever.
@popscottica
@popscottica 6 лет назад
CrazyRoadblock it’s to prevent shock when cutting into the cabin in case the door won’t open in severe crashes. They pop the frunk open with the latch on the outside, cut the battery connections, then they can safely pry open the cabin. It’s for safety purposes and I’m fairly sure mandated by law.

Cool video. Always enjoy your clear and realistic videos. Re the "frunk"... 1: We here in Oz - wher you wont see any Teslas if out 1950's Government has their way, we dont use the term "trunk". It's a "boot". So what you call a "Frunk" is actually a "Froot"! Much nicer. 2: I note you tried to bump it to release the catch, but you held it down until after the release motor had cycled, so it was still locked. You need to press the froot lid down, hit the release button but then let the lid go before the release motor has completed its cycle. Ie, open the lid while the catch is released.

The Tesla hood is so delicate that they tell you to push down with two hands. Maybe if you sat on the hood and bounced a bit until you feel the hood come off the latch, then click your remote or pull the emergency ripcord (unless you have the 12v emergency release which only works with a dead 12v battery. Every car I owned had mechanical hood release, and when you feel it getting stiff, you know you need to lubricate the mechanism. With electric release you might not know it’s time to do PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE, until it’s too late and you need CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE”. These so called “zero maintenance” EVs are going to be someone’s big headache when they are 10 years old, just like these ICE vehicles with too many bells and whistles. The problem is nobody will pay $20,000 for an electric GEO Metro. But once battery prices come down per “pass through megawatt-hours”, I think a basic car with manual steering, manual windows, manual door and hood latches, simple gauge package and 200 mile range with 20 minutes charging to 80%, EVs will be bought by the masses. I was perfectly happy with an ICE Geo Metro, and it being electric wouldn’t bother me if I can charge fast. I don’t need it to wipe my butt, just get me to work.

+IMHO Hell naw. Sit on the hood and bend it?
@imho7250
@imho7250 6 лет назад
Bjørn Nyland, yes, I was trying to say if the hood wasn’t as weak as an empty beer can, you could sit on it. But even as weak as it is, you could put a pillow or blanket on it and GENTLY sit, applying force over a greater area than your hands can do, but being careful not to buckle the hood. In the US it’s easy to find someone who has 1 sq meter of butt that weighs only 70kg. LOL
@andywoof7360
@andywoof7360 6 лет назад
+IMHO Yep, I run old vehicles and sooner or later all the needlessly overcomplicated electric gadgets stop working. If you want reliability and cheap running costs, then go for the vehicle with the fewest unnecessary gadgets. There's a lot to be said for the simplicity of a low component count, I remember hearing an old engineer's mantra " Perfection is reached, not when there's nothing left to add, but when there's nothing left to remove"

I guess the problem with the frunk was that the rubber seal that seals the compartment was moist and froze. You should apply silicone on all rubber seals (trunk, frunk and all doors) at winter time. then you don't get that problem again. As you mentioned the first click was different from the second one. That's because the lock released. The type of click you got after is typical for a released lock trying to release again. I guess you could have got it open if you had yanked hard enough, but that could have damaged the seal.

This is a particular situation and nothing that will happen to you all the time, don't take this has a example of what owning a electric car is always like, because is not. Also you don't have to charge your electric car only on super chargers, those are for long trips or for people on a hurry, you can charge a electric car in any normal electric car charger or even in a simple electric home socket available, if we really think about it, electric cars have more "fueling" options then ICE cars have. Btw for most electric car drivers, charging at home is enough for their day trip to work and back, because the average work place is less then 60 miles or 100 km from their home.

Sit on the hood to push the lock closed again, it looks like it's 'released' but there is a secondary release after the first one, that you're trying to operate. Then the body lines will be tight again. Now try it, but push down on the hood as you activate the release to prevent it from coming up too fast.
