Yesterday it was extremely cold in Folldal, Norway. I went there to sleep in my car. In the morning the temperature was as low as -38°C/-36°C. The car started but it had some issues...
Range at 00:15: 316 km
Range at 06:00: 241 km
Average range consumed per hour: 13 km
Average heater power: 13 km * 210 Wh/km = 2.7 kW
Outside temperature when camping: -36°C/-33°F
Temperature inside the car: 18°C/64°F
Range mode on during camping

Vitor, It's not possible to determine if a scale is linear from two data points. I'm not sure why people tend to think basing a temperature scale around waters freezing and boiling points is vastly superior to a more relate-able human based scale, but clearly you just wanted to mock Fahrenheit.

sometimes i get ice build ups on the brakes, thats pretty annoying the steering wheels just vibrates for like a good 20 min drive until the ice falls off, but that mostly happens because of snow and winds over a day or night and the car wasnt covered from it
@dmitrid8170
@dmitrid8170 5 лет назад
In Russia we have problems too in 30-40. Tyres vibrate, brake discs are frozen sometime, engine oil freezes and engine does not start.
@i64fanatic

@@dmitrid8170 AYE, in alberta, -40 would cause throttle linkage to freeze up in older cars even oiled well. About the power steering 'freezing up': the car has electric power steering and I don't think it uses any hydraulic fluid. But just like all ICE cars, most on-board systems in a Tesla work under a 12V-circuit, not directly from the high-voltage battery. If Tesla had to redevelop every system to fit its own circuitry, it would cost them billions. That's why they buy their hardware from standard automotive suppliers, which still heavily rely on 12V-networks. So my hypothesis is that the 12V-battery is suffering from the cold and therefore the car is powering down high 12V-consumers, like the power steering, the TACC (radar eats up quite a lot of electrons, too) etc. The heater for the car draws its power from the HV-battery, which is why that still works fine. But again: it's just a theory. About the tire pressure: the air inside the tires 'shrinks' due to the cold, therefore tire pressure drops. Below a certain level, the TP warning goes off, but that shouldn't alarm you too much. That's why the message went away after some driving: it creates quite a lot of heat in the tires, making the air inside expand again. For the rest: thank you very much for risking your own safety so that we can learn from your experiments!

Actually, Model Y is rumored to be the first Tesla that runs on main battery only. The 12V Battery is finally old news. Fewer problems and fewer parts that can brake. Love it.

@bjornvesterdahl9238
@bjornvesterdahl9238 6 лет назад
I’ve seen worse on ICE. In -35 my car with manual gearbox I had to use force to operate. Tire issues are normal in those conditions. Steering issues also common. Below -30 deg Celsius is extreme. Just wonder if you experienced this your self if you think no other car will suffer the same problems. Especially during a night in it you should be very happy if it will start at all.
@rzvqvb

I had an old and weak battery on my ICE car. Power steering not immediately kicking in when starting the car was usually the first sign that battery was low.
@abyssunderground
@abyssunderground 6 лет назад
@kasmo paya it'll likely still have a 12v or 24v system for lights etc, they'll just run directly from the DC-DC converter which will run all the time instead. Much simpler but keeps the safety aspect of low voltage.

@@karolakkolo123 No...we're saying that humans inhale air(oxygen+the other 80% of shit in the air) and exhale CO2. Breathe into a shopping bag for a little bit and let me know how that goes for you. I can't tell if you're joking but I guess let this be knowledge for anyone: The Avg human releases 2.3 pounds a day of CO2..6 hours of sleep and there is half a lb of CO2 recirculating in his car. 2.3lbs is based off normal activity and does not reflect physical exercise or other strenuous activity.. There is a real risk of people shrugging off the symptoms of CO2 poisoning and dying, Especially sleeping in a car as airtight as a Tesla. Symptoms of poising include headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, weakness and confusion. However, Bjorn did mention that the Tesla does automate the AC, and it brings in fresh air from the outside (not sure the frequency or if air qual. in car is monitored). The problem is also amplified if Bjorn is awake, driving, and not bringing fresh air in his cabin or stepping out for long periods of time. Quote by Dr Gisli Jenkins, University of Nottingham: "By the time that the carbon dioxide levels in the air that you breathe reach 15% you’ll effectively die. Assuming the box is about 4 cubic meters it would take about 16 hours or so. But you would actually start to feel ill and probably die a lot sooner than that. Actually it could be down to, sort of, five hours."

@@leekent414 well that depends on if the tires are actually not plyable at this temp. I imagine they are tough but not rock rigid. Rolling tires causes deformation because there is (except on really low profile sport tires) a crushed down portion at the contact area. The tire continuously folding and unfolding around the circumstance. This creates friction in amongst the molecules and heat. There are cool videos where someone puts a gopro inside the wheel and drives.

Bjørn, i adore you polar bear. You really do the crazy things in the cold. Interesting since I tried to sleep over night in my Model S in moderate cold temperature 4°C. The battery was at 130 km range. But I under-estimated the energy that was needed to heat the car inside overnight. So I ended up at the 10% battery range point. That switched off the inside heater. It gave me a warning message on the IC, saying that it is now saving battery. That was at 4:30 in the morning. So I decided to start work a little earlier and firstly rolled to the supercharger. Since my experience was only a test. I didn't want to drive home and back in back in icy conditions after working late the night before. !!! But your adventures of a far, far greater !!!

Not only handle the cold but handle frozen terrain. Tesla is far far superior to other cars on snow and ice. The computer monitors the wheels thousands of times a second and reacts just as quickly. You might think because it was developed in warm sunny SoCal they would overlook things but I assure you that team is smarter than the average bear.

Tip I learnt, to warm up the car quicker and more evenly use the footwell vents because hot air rises. Reverse is true in the summer, cool quicker with the top vents.
@joeKisonue
@joeKisonue 2 года назад
They are also bigger and shorter. The dash vents piping sits in the air chamber behind the dash and the small vents mix the air so quickly it feels cold. The dash air also gets cold passing through the chamber. In the summer the big battle is cooling all the interior plastic and foam. Black dash sitting in direct sunlight. I always have the windows wide open with a/c for a bit till that sweltering radiant heat stops hitting me from all angles.

While you're driving it says -38 C... damn. But it actually got down to -42 C in Norway this winter so it can get very cold indeed. I'd love for Tesla to start to implement some sort of fast battery heating system.

Amazing stuff. Would have loved to ride live with you in that kind of cold. Also very bold to put the car in range mode over night. I know why you did it, because of range the other day. But if it where my car, i wouldn't want the battery to reach the cold temperature where the snow flake appears. Its not good for the battery at all. I know it takes time to cool down the battery but as we saw -36 degrees does the trick pretty fast. Thank you for doing this to your car. I wouldn't have the balls to do it for sure.

I think cold-temperature effects on the battery are mostly temporary, as opposed to heat damage.
@kasmopaya2676
@kasmopaya2676 6 лет назад
Not sure, it destroyed my Smartphone battery very fast. But i charged it with too cold battery, that can not happen with tesla. I think too that heat is more damaging. But isn't the battery warranty void if one lets the car sit in -20degrees for about 24h without battery heater on? Or something like that?
@gr8899

User manual says don't let it sit in -30 or lower for 24 hour or more.

Probably the -60 you are getting is just the min value of the sensor.. It´s actually the sky reflected in your car which is recognized as -60°C
@TBasianeyes

Vibration could also be caused by the oil in the shock absorbers. Probably a combination of that and the tires being rock hard.
@seb.

TBasianeyes agree, I'd also suspect frozen moisture in the air suspension system that could cause such troubles

Hahaha, first time experiencing the 'square tires' thing. Happens here all the time in the winter! Just drive normally (which means slowly in extreme cold) and the ride smooths out after a while, no big deal. Even winter tires harden up under -25 or so. It's always fun to watch people experience extreme cold for the first time.

Was -41°C on wednesday or tuesday. Remeber filling diesel in -27°C , better just plugging in and getting warm inside the car. EV's can run the heater without exsost that is a hudge benefitt.

I remember driving in -33ºC with diesel that has a "cloud point" at -31ºC. It was excrusiating, was waiting for the car to stall any minute.

Maybe some F1 style weaving would help to bring tyre temps up faster? You maybe need to get a tent for the car so it doesn’t get so cold at night haha
@joeKisonue

Ha ha. Yes well F1 technique only works going 70 miles per hour. It's hard to tell they are going that fast on TV but that's what it takes. Probably hard to achieve on winter roads

Your Flir..it could be -60. Black body radiation might drop it that far. You're parked out in the open..so possible. What a testimony to the robustness of the Tesla. This is valuable info. I suspect when you were first driving things got colder with the wind and all.

I was actually waiting for what happens when you start driving with those frozen-square tires. They also make a different sound when frozen. Another curious thing which probably won't happen with this Tesla. If you park off the road so that the car is leaning to the other size and then drive back on the road, the car would be visibly tilted, just like if there was a 300kg person sitting on the passinger side. You would also have a very stiff suspension for a couple of minutes until the oil in shock absorbers heats up. Too bad you didn't test the frozen interior and the seats that turn to solid wood. There is one thing I'd like to know, some rubber grommets and seals shrink and become stiff, and if they have the wrong type of lubricant that also freezes and turns to clue, then when the rotating or moving part goes into action it can rip the rubber part in pieces. Have you checked those parts?

Typical cold weather problems like that here in Finland. Gear shifts are slow/stiff. Tyres are like square shaped. Power steering makes weird noise. I'm amazed that tesla even works on that temperature. This video seriously changes my doubts agains tesla..

Thank you, now it's a real freaking freezing cold test :) I admit you're real crazy, because we here in Siberia even try not to drive outside of a town when it's below -30, because it can be really dangerous, and every year a few people freeze to death when they drive to another town and their car brokes down and no one else is here. The police is usually cruising around and helps such people, but at the north side of our Tomsk region (Strezhevoy, Nizhnevartovsk) there are less people and less help you can get. So, it was quite thoughtlessly of you to get there without anyone covering your back. Please take care of yourself.
