=============================
This is a video of me coming into the break, to then land a Navy C-2A Greyhound on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, somewhere over the Persian Gulf a few years back. Pay special attention to my eyes once I roll out on short final and am behind the boat.
This video was actually recorded while I was on deployment and at a time in my flying career when I really started to feel comfortable behind the boat. So much so, that we were definitely pushing the envelope on this particular pass (for as much as you can in a C-2, ha!) by coming in fast and breaking extremely early.
Typically for a carrier break in an E-2 or C-2, you turn about one mile past the ship. For this pass though, it might have been 1/5 that distance. This is why I’m repeatedly looking out the window, as I’m trying to gauge just how far abeam we are from the boat and making sure that we are setting ourselves up to intercept a typical approach turn portfolio, which finally occurs just before I get on glide slope and start flying the ball.
Also, the co-pilot in this video is an incredibly skilled pilot who was senior to me at the time. He backed me up throughout the entire approach and I absolutely could not have successfully attempted this pass without him. And it’s been a few years since this video was recorded, but I miss flying on and off of aircraft carriers every day.

I think what a lot of non-Naval/Marine aviators don't appreciate is this: You're not just trying to land on a short, moving runway. You're trying to land on a short, moving runway that's moving diagonally to the right, while fighting a diagonal crosswind, constantly moving while you're trying to land on a tiny strip of that runway. And you still caught the 3-wire, I bet.

I was a quartermaster/navigator for an aircraft carrier, we follow the wind when doing this. We also keep the speed of the ship around the speed of the wind to make it easier. USS Harry S Truman CVN 75. I've been on planes that land on carriers and it's terrifying, the way the pilot keeps making 100 adjustments per second and dropping height/speed every second. Not mention the seats are backwards in the back so when the plane grabs the cable your head doesn't snap forward but instead pushes against your headrest with so much g force. Will never forget it

@@chriskeel3096 Well, I think that repeated practice is a normal thing to perfect an activity. There is nothing wrong with that. I understand your comment. @Markevans36301
@Markevans36301 3 года назад
@@camillof17 Okay, pilot but not Navy/military pilot but I have to answer to both: the thumb thing is called trim and it is so the pilot doesn't have to exert a lot of pressure on the yoke to keep the plane pitched the way they want it. You can always tell a good pilot, well one sign anyway, in that they use trim a lot instead of fighting the plane. The "ball" is a set of lights that give the pilot visual cues on how well they are lined up for landing, both glideslope (too high, too low, just right), and horizontal.

When I was in the NAVY as an electrician. We were in the Indian Ocean. I was chosen for some R&R to the island Diego Garcia. I got to fly off the USS America on a C-2A and then back on I think an s-3. It was some jet. It was amazing being launched off. Landing and going through getting into the glide scope was fun. Feeling small g’s in the turn 😂 not really any g’s but you could feel your face move. Once in a lifetime event for me. R.I.P Dale Snodgrass my CO at the time.

Want to watch a guy flying his ass off? Watch a B52 pilot air refueling. No ailerons...just spoilers on that bird. Crazy.
