Ep. 62 I DIDN'T WANT THIS...

This is not a RESTORATION. I went to the Habitat Restore to find some lumber for one of my next furniture projects. I was easily distracted by the large selection of vintage furniture and eventually purchased this Mid-Century Coffee Table for $6.00. How could I say no to that? The top is made of cheap laminate, which was common for furniture from this era. It is durable, but not desirable regarding resale. In this video, I will disassemble this table and re-glue the joints. I will then use Howard Restore-a-Finish to refresh the existing finish which has normal wear and tear. I will also apply Howard Feed n Wax to help polish and condition this table. In my opinion, building a new top for this table would not have been cost effective. I would expect this table to sell for $75-$100. This will help pay for some of the supplies for my next furniture project. I hope you enjoy this project, and thank you for all the support. Barry

Barry,It Turned Out Nice! I Have A Small Cabinet,I Got At Walmart,Some Decades Ago. The Corner Base Got Wet Once. I Sanded It,Applied Wax. It's Been The TV 📺 Table,Since The Mid 90's The Doors Don't Shut Flush. I Polish It,1-2X A Year!. It Came In A Box. It Was A Cheap,Quick Buy. It's "That Piece", & I Still Have It. 🤗

Hi Barry, you said, "cheap laminate top," and "not good for resale" but older "cheap" furniture will be of better material and build quantity than most of the newer furniture out there. I think it looks great!

Actually I like the laminate surface for households with children. You get the look of the 60's without the cost and the kids can still be kids. This is the type of furniture you would find in blue collar homes when I grew up. We were very poor and I always wanted this type of furniture as a kid. Lines so neat and tidy compared to the Salvation Army turn of the century (20th) pieces we had. Those "ugly" pieces I hated are worth a fortune now days.

I guess I don’t really love it, but then again, I don’t hate it either. I do love laminate as a kitchen countertop. In my opinion, it’s the best surface for a kitchen. I wish they still made it with a gloss finish, I’d like to replace my Marmoleum. It sounded like I a good idea 15 years ago, but it doesn’t play well with water or the heat of the stove.
