For filter coffee I bought a Fellow Ode Gen 2 at the beginning of this year to replace my 10 year old Baratza Encore and I’ve been very pleased with it. Until a couple of months ago I had been looking for nearly two years for a single-dosing candidate to replace my now 11 year old Baratza Vario+ that I’ve mostly used for espresso and just felt I could never find quite the right replacement with the appropriate tradeoffs. I was drawn to the Niche but being in Canada results in the final price after shipping, tax and duty being uncomfortably expensive. I largely agree with your observations about the original DF64 and had long ago ruled it out; even the DF83 too. However, the preliminary reviews of the DF64 Gen 2 had me doing enough head-scratching to think that I might’ve found my solution. Accordingly, I’ve had it for about three weeks now and gotta say, I’m very pleased so far. Like you, it made a decent shot of espresso from its first grind and it is just getting better as I get familiar with it. My only gripe is its sound (well louder than the old Vario+). Nice review and well done. Thanks.

3:35 I think the exposed set screw is actually a useful feature because (and I dont mean to nitpick but I saw it in this video too) its used to set your true zero on the grinder. for me, positioning the arrow over the spout gives me an inaccurate reading for where the true zero actually is. I can find the point just before the before the burrs chirp and then move the arrow to where the zero on the dial currently is. the exposed setscrew makes it easy to clean the grinder and reset that true zero, and is useful for the different tolerances in manufacturing that may cause different people to have different true zeros. I will say that my burrs were pretty misaligned from the factory but some aluminum foil shims fixed it nicely. I agree that bellows can be unsightly sometimes but I think someone should make a 3D printed lid of some kind, the anti-popcorn feature works really well anyways. personally i use the bellows but frankly its just for fun, it makes like a 0.05g difference since retention is so little aside from the noise IMO its hard to recommend a 64mm single dose grinder that's not the Gen 2. a consumer will end up paying SO much more money for the same exact performance from another grinder aside from the quieter function. Like the Lagom p64 for example, you can buy the Gen 2 + the Option O mizen burrs for less than or close to half of what the lagom costs for exactly the same thing - a single dose 64mm grinder that has an all-metal construction (minus the RPM control, noise, and tiny bit of plastic on the df64 but frankly rpm control isn't worth the extra $1000+ I can just use an inline AC dimmer if I really wanted it lol). For $400 you really cannot beat the value here and I think the df64 gen 2 should be the automatic recommendation for people looking to get a near-endgame grinder or a 64mm single dose grinder especially since a good flat burr grinder usually starts at like $650 and can easy clear $1000. This is people's hard earned money we're talking about and I think its very unfair for people to be suggested very expensive grinders when theres a new cheap grinder (the cheapest 64mm espresso grinder I've found too aside from modded ode 2) that gives endgame performance with all the necessary features for most home enthusiasts. I hope a gen 3 solves the noise issue but other than that I'm not sure what else they can add here, its really unbeatable for the price, build quality, and performance in the current market. AND the supply of them is rather high right now, unlike literally every other 64mm flat burr grinder thats either completely sold out for months, still in preorder, etc etc. espresso outlet is waiting for a restock but I know miicoffee has them right now and they will keep pumping them out without issue. If the noise is a dealbreaker for someone then sure they should buy another grinder but this grinder is the next niche in terms of the value and how it lowers the barrier to entry for an already expensive hobby. I upgraded from an fellow opus and that felt like it was worth $20, the df64 feels like I truly maximized my dollar
@ben2e
@ben2e 10 месяцев назад
I'm with you on the noise. It would be a deal breaker. Gen 3 ?

Chose this over the Niche Zero because I live in Canada and couldn't stomach the duty fees. I've had this grinder for about a month now, mine came with the DLC burrs installed from Coffee Addicts. Overall it's really nice, like you said it makes great coffee. You are correct that it is loud. The one area where my experience differs from the RU-vid reviews I've seen is the effectiveness of the 'plasma generator', no issue for espresso, but when we grind for filter we are still getting quite a bit of chaf. I can't compare it to the gen1 but I honestly expected it to be a little cleaner than it is. BUT considering the pricepoint I still think the Gen2 is hard to beat and we are very happy with it.
@DaddyGotCoffee
@DaddyGotCoffee 11 месяцев назад
Chaff is really tricky because it comes down to so many factors. Roast level, burrs, relative humidity - this is going to differ slightly for everyone - on the whole though it’s a huge improvement over gen 1 no matter how you slice it. Agreed - hard to beat at this price
@jcee41
@jcee41 10 месяцев назад
Chaff is on the bean so it has to come out one way or another! For filter, I stopped bellowing into the dose because it seemed to be mostly chaff.

I think in 5-10 years time, when all the dust and trauma of people being locked down during the pandemic and spending WAY too much time at home/ online/ on coffee message boards, we are going to look back on the idea of "seasoning burrs" as one of the stupidest concepts to ever take hold of the coffee world. Currently I own a Timemore C3 Pro Max that does the work for me but takes too long and effort is high so I tend to use Nesspreso more often just to not grind it manually. I'm Trying to buy a good(ish) coffee grinder, something in the 400/600 usd budget (I'm from Argentina) I'm between the Timemore 064s and this DF64 Gen2 I'm not looking to buy a grinder to change it in 1 or 2 years, I would like this to serve me for a long time and be useful, mostly for espresso/moka but from time to time for French press.

I'm staring at my gorgeous, black Ascaso Steel Duo and I don't even have a grinder yet. You know what grinds my beans? Trying to make a decision on a grinder, that's what. Those decibel levels when my day started with a caffeine withdrawal headache - hard pass. Bellows that look like the black-water drain hose on a RV... for the love of all that's good and holy - WHY? (Talk about signaling retention issues.) And, I cant remember if I'm supposed to spend 3x my monthly salary on a setup or if that's for engagement rings - feels like a huge commitment regardless. What does an espresso and latte-loving person in the PNW do? What grinder is under a grand, under 85 decibels, not underwhelming in form and function, and doesn't put me at the mercy of waitlists, limited edition ferver, and hype-beast drop dates? Am I hunting for a Sasquatch out here? #CryForHelp Can I just jam pods in my portafilter? smh

@nittygritty7434
@nittygritty7434 9 месяцев назад
I've wondered about this as well and received some feedback over the months. P64 great build quality, low retention etc.. but expensive. Yet one tester noted how consistent it was to get same results across different beans/roasts. They also noted that a grinder like DF64 with same burrs aligned and dialed in would probably give similar if not almost exact taste in cup. Can say the tolerances in P64 allows one to 'eke' out a little more consistent results in the cup (seemingly) as well as better user experience-less hassle with retention etc.. Also from everything I've found out from user reviews is burr geometry matters the most. For instance smaller burrs with 'interesting'-good geometry can practically match larger burrs in more expensive grinders, especially with certain types of beans/roasts. The other key thing I come across often is one grinder/burr tastes great w/ a select type of bean/roast but another grinder/burr tastes better w/a different bean/roast so it's all a trade-off unless have 2+ grinders. Example a med. roast leaning toward dark cherry and semi-sweet chocolate tastes better on stock burr or a 'trad.' Italian grinder-burr vs. a more unimodal burr but then performs-tastes "worse" on a lighter roast w/ leans more toward 'fruit' want balanced acidity.

I think I may plummet for the Niche Zero, being based in the UK.I know its been around a while, and isnt super rated for Filter/Pour Overs, however.... NZ Pro's for me are Quietness, Style, Espresso shots review well - Cons: Burrs not upgradable, filter/pour over capability considered "Good", price. There is a limit to how good my coffee is going to taste at home, and I appreciate good cafe's with better rigs... so why am I still typing? Because... this Gen 2 DF64 provides a cheaper price point, Burr upgrade potential and could prob grind more than a single dose if i'm doing a larger Pour Over one day... it's just the sound. As a musician and producer my ears are rather sensitive to whining and irregular lurching motors... and at the end of the day, using it every day I think the smile of a calmer grind might just be worth it. #rambleover What did you buy?

Espresso machine Silvia V6 Grinder Eureka Silenzio 1 year old Both 1 year old Silenzio is unusable right now thats why I am going to get something else. I drink 90% espresso and 10% Turkish. My Silnenzio probably had some very bad quality check because since the first day it produced many fines, tried to shim him but nothing got fixed. Overmore the 3rd time I removed the bottom burr 1 of the 3 holes of the carrier got damaged. While getting it out 1 screw ruined the threads and now I will have to somehow fix it with a helicoil. I am in Europe How is the build quality on these things? Should I get 750E the DF83 v2 for 750E? In my mind I believe that getting a commercial grinder would be the best but I think they have high retention. (Fiorenzato F64E) Do you have any suggestions?

I’m doing my first setup with a Bambino and either this or the Timemore 064s - any thoughts? Obviously now this guy has the price advantage, but the noise difference isn’t something I can gauge before trying it out. Espresso only!

The “ugly part” that you dont want its not only for getting the left over coffee out, its also mean to help cleaning the grinder and covering it from little insects like cockroaches oa any little things can accidentally drop in there, not sure if he puts it back to cover when hes done grinding and take it off when needed i dont think so seen hes like short cut, if so, why cant just leave it in there, for the look???? 😂

We were just interacting on another video, but I’ll ask a more general question here. 😊 I drink milk drinks and can’t pick out tasting notes. I do like it savory, sweet, and roasty. When I say savory, what I mean is that what I taste in my favorite espresso blend usually seems more nutty to me than what I would call chocolate. I’d also really appreciate a forgiving dial-in that won’t require too many test shots in the morning (I love my morning routine, but I’m also helping our two little girls get ready). Everything about that says Niche Zero to me. Do you think this DF64 v2 is something I should explore? Or the Niche Duo? Right now I have the Mignon Specialita, but I’ve been struggling a bit with it and want to try something new.

Happy to jump around on different vids! 😂☕️ The df64 g2 is solid at the price, with the zero you are getting an easier dial in, cleaner counter appeal, much quieter operation (seriously, I have a video of my wife using the zero while wearing a sleeping baby!) better workflow and taste profile more suited to your preferences. The df64 will give you clearer flavor separation but at the sacrifice of sweet syrupy body. For you, I’d say the only reason to take this over the zero would be price. If you can come up to the zeros price, you will be happier with it.

Nice video, I am looking for a new grinder. Performance and workflow are priorities which this grinder seems to do well with. However I almost exclusively do drip coffee with the hope to add more methods in the future. For the 200-300 price point what would you recommend for drip coffee mainly with some versatility as well?

I really like the look actually. I got one in white, which I would now consider to have been a mistake. But The only real complaint I share with you is the noise, its pretty loud. Right now I am pretty happy with the burr set, I might consider upgrading down the road, but SSP Burs are like 240€ in Germany, which is more than half what I paid for the entire grinder ,so this is definitely something I wont consider short term. Overall, really happy with my purchase. PS: I dont mind the bellows, and I like the wooden cap fot them.

Interesting you are criticizing the “industrial vibe” - I would say 8 out of 10 manual portafilter espresso machines have that vibe and it seems to be very popular in the community. I certainly love it. The DF64 Gen2 will go well with my black Gaccia Classic Pro Evo and my black normcore accessories…

Not really a critique, more an acknowledgment it’s not gonna be for everyone. It’s a very affordable grinder, but it’s not cheap. At this price point aesthetics and… ahem… spousal conversation… come into play.

I always over-research when I spend a lot of money on something. My wife says I enjoy the chase as much as the catch, but I want to make sure I put my money in the right place. So I am expecting my DF64 Gen2 in the next 4-5 days from Singapore. Really looking forward to it. We do a Moka first thing in in the morning (bought it 20 years ago - used it almost every day since), Aeropress during the day, and maybe the odd V60 so something versatile was called for. Don't have an espresso maker. Yet. The Industrial look is good for me - I'm an engineer so works well. This is my first 'proper' grinder so looking forward to the next set of rabbit holes to head down! Kids won't be put off the noise cos they've all left home now. :)

Very seriously considering this setup with a steel duo. For the last few years I've been using an aero press and Hario switch with an ode Gen 2. Do you think it's worth jumping straight to the steel duo and skipping the Bambino and gaggia phase? Totally understand the grinder is the most important thing.
@DaddyGotCoffee
@DaddyGotCoffee 11 месяцев назад
I’m a big fan of the Ascaso line. If the price doesn’t scare you off IMO the Duo is one of the very best options at the price. If milk drinks aren’t a daily thing, you can get most of the advantages with the Uno.
@JimmyTulip1
@JimmyTulip1 6 месяцев назад
@@DaddyGotCoffeeActually even for milk drinks I'd give the UNO a thought. The "problem" with the DUO is that the steam boiler is quite small compared to the single boiler of the UNO. My dealer said the power is much better on the UNO. But of course it's all a matter of preference. I was very happy with the UNO and I'm an idiot for selling it for no good reason really (tried to downgrade but now I'm back to upgrading again...).

I really like the DF64 for the price, I don't mind the looks, but my main hold-back is I'm trying to find something quieter than the Encore and this isn't in the right direction from what I'm seeing in videos. Very nice review, thank you. I'm an engineer so maybe I'm biased, but I like the look :) I like that the burr can be changed out, and I like the ability to choose a specific burr at time of purchase, but I don't foresee changing burrs just to change flavor profile. I just acknowledged what I've been trying to ignore for the past few years: most of us who grind at home are drinking reduced quality coffee, and/or are having to adjust our brews for the crappy grinders the market is flooded with. I have two nice hand grinders that supposedly produce the "cleanest cup" and "least fines" but they are nowhere near what comes in a bag of pre-ground coffee. I haven't loved coffee the same way ever since I started grinding my own. I've had to reduce extraction (lower water temp, reduced extraction time, and/or coarser grind) to overcome the ridiculous amount of fines or whatever. It's a damn shame there's so much skewed information online about these grinders.

I am on a quest to find a capable and quiet grinder for espresso. You compared this to the NZ. Thankyou for including the metered dbs for this grinder. Would a Niche-type [clear] cover knock down the dbs to an acceptable level...say 70 or so? I am leaning towards the 64V, but only if it is much much quieter. A P64 may be my only recourse. My current grinder (Eureka Mignon Classico) measures in the low 80s dbs.

I’ve been using one for a week and it’s my first “expensive” single dose grinder. Before this I had a regular conical burr OXO grinder for filter coffee only. I have enjoyed it so far. Noticed the rattling you mentioned of metal on metal when the dosing cup is not seated perfectly. I don’t think it’s too loud personally. I have noticed when grinding coarser for filter coffee that there is still quite a bit of static and chaff flying out and sticking to the outside of the chute and grinder body.

I found that not using the collar on the grind cup still has some grinds missing the cup and getting all over the machine and counter. I would definitely say you want to use the collar. I grind with the collar then remove the collar when I want to flip the grounds into my 58mm portafilter. If you are using a standard 58mm portafilter, e.g. E61 group head, then the cup is a perfect fit.
