Dan can order a Tent that would be much better than that Turft one and he is informed that they will build it for him . Knowing how slow these French people have been in the past . I would order one of those Air Pump Tents . He could get it in the mail alot faster .
I have to admit I love that kind of stuff too... Living vicariously through your fines and watching you discover all the hidden interesting things. F.Y.I. I don't want anybody getting the wrong idea that I'm crushing on you or anything like that. I'm old enough to be your grandmother. I just really enjoy watching something that old, that dilapidated coming back to life that has so much history and the joy that is associated with restoring it.
Agreed. He worked so hard and well the last time he was there. I hope Dan can get some sort of temporary roof on the two side wings so that the lower levels are not drenched if it rains.
That basement was a dirty job, but now that it's almost done, it looks great! I doubt any of those "secret" rooms have anything valuable in them. They would have gone up in the fire. But, here's to hoping ! Thanks for sharing your day! 😀
I can see why you were excited to get more work done cleaning out the basement. You can really see the progress and get some satisfaction from it.😊 Good job!
I love your ambition. I hope the masonry can be rescued. It is very crumbly. Looks to lack any structural integrity. Love the rescue aspect of the project. The best of luck going forward.
I am truly amazed by the tiles looking so good when uncovered. It's like finding gold! For some reason Dan I have a feeling you drove your Mom crazy when you were a kid, going on adventures! LOL 😂 That area under the stairs could have been a coal chute or wood storage for heating. It's great seeing the real look of the basement with so much cleared.
My best guess would be the ground level around the chateau was raised considerably during the build and they didn't bother backfilling underneath the stairs but if there's actually a cobbled floor down there that guess doesn't make all that much sense.
Very cool, but please be careful. With no one there to even call for assistance, try not to take too many risks. I understand exactly how interesting and exciting hidden chambers can be but please wait on going inside until you have someone with you.
I appreciate your enthusiasm, Dan. And I'm glad you are wearing a respirator. But where did the hard hat and safety boots go? Safety first, especially since you're out there alone.
One thing about you Dan. You are not afraid to get dirty. Next thing you need is to find a well and set up an outdoor shower to get the dust off before your 2 hour drive home. Hugs
I agree Dan, it is soooo satisfying seeing all that debris cleared away. Being only for a basement, those floors are beautifully done and makes me imagine how more beautiful the living parts of this Chateau must have been. Obviously it was built by someone with a sense of pride for every room to be so neatly done, no matter how trivial the room may be in the great scheme of things?👏🔦📹❤️
Once you begin rebuilding the collapsed cellar walls, it might be interesting to add a cupboard style door to those hidden spaces, if anything just for a bit of extra storage. It'd be a shame to block them back up again, and they might make good utilities closets too, for battery storage, or anything really. If The Pethericks are anything to go by, you'll need all of those regular cellar rooms for storing building materials and furniture when you get into rebuilding the upper floors :P
My thoughts went .to .wondering if those childrent that were housed there during the War ..were maybe hidden there if anyone came searching for them ???
This is so exciting. The basement already looks good. I think the space is great and the walls are beautiful. Great job Dan, No one work harder than you
OMG Dan! Stop taking crazy risks when you’re at the chateau on your own! By the way, brilliant filming, camera placement, music choices and editing today. You’re very talented. But crazy as anything! 😊
I was thinking the exact, same thing, don't do this stuff without someone there to back you up!. But also telling myself "he got out alive, or we wouldn't be seeing the footage'.
@@amysbees6686steel toed is actually a bad idea. Carbon can take bigger impacts without cutting your toes off. Only place steel toed is still good are glassfactory’s
Good job, Dan! It is hard work but we all know you aren’t afraid of a little thing like that! The smile on your face just keeps getting bigger and bigger with each passing day! 😎
so much of those walls with the odd shaped stones and mortor are the older 'fortress' that you are standing in- the difference in the ages and styles of construction are very obvious- they clearly used old spaces in the 'new constructions' - fascinating to see
The basement areas do indeed look so much better after the massive clean you did down there. Great work, Dan! It was impossible to work out a plan until you cleared up and assessed what was sound and restorable, and what would need rebuilding. It’s exciting that you are almost at that point!👍🏻
I was happy to see you made a ramp that wasn’t so unsteady but then you shimmied into a hole in the floor. 😳 you are making great progress and keeping us on edge in the process!
Its so very satisfying to see those floors get cleared in the basement and prepped for storage of materials when you start getting to the ground floor clearing and repairs. I wish I could be there to help you out. Stay safe Dan and Happy Spring!
An incredible accomplishment, Dan! I can't believe how much you've done in such a short period of time. Never thought you'd have a coffee machine there by now!
Hi Dan! As someone who’s been married to a cameraman/video editor/ documentary producer for 43years, I can certainly appreciate the production of your vlogs. I’ve been following from the very beginning and your progress is great (video recording). It makes viewing so much more interesting. Well done! I’m full of admiration for you. You try your hand at anything and you do it so well. Good luck as you continue on this venture.
I am sure after a couple of years your Chateau will have given up a few more secrets about its life. While you were shoveling debris I could almost see the kids running around and hiding in different places, there's probably more hiding places yet to find. Yay for you to start your day with a cup of coffee, hope you are taking more coffee breaks and resting your back between breaks.
Hello Dan! I have a wheels barrow . I use it for heavy loads. It has 2 wheels in the front. This helps to keep the load from tipping over. It might make your life a little easier. Love the videos.❤
I bet you can just feel the time when you will be complete and having that cuppa Coffee on the terrace looking out at all you have accomplished. so proud of you Dan. I would be giggling too, at the hidden rooms and what they might hold.
That empty space under the entrance steps is surprising. Looks like a paved floor. Perhaps what is now the basement was originally the ground floor, suggesting that has always been the grand entrance. Very glad to see you building your own ramps as you go. Here's the But: what happened to keeping your back straight and bending your knees to lift big stones and chunks of concrete? Ahem. A great day's progress. Tantalising too. Knowing you were going into new spaces as you pointed them out, I finally landed on the single word that describes you. Irrepressible. 😅
Your work ethic is as awesome as your enthusiasm! So inspiring and so exciting. I realize it’s all ‘one day at a time’ but looking forward to seeing where you’ll be this time next year!!! So thrilling, especially to all the DIY folks. TBC……❤
What a great job! I can't wait to see when you and Calvin get the first floor debris cleared the rest of the way. And Nick gets in there after the tree trunk!
The amount of satisfaction i get seeing each bit cleared. Seeing you work from the literal ground up... makes me want to just go buy my own ruin and spend my days bringing it back to life!
I am enjoying watching you turn a pile of rubbish into an historic building. You're a magician. Thanks for sharing your adventure with me. You have a fan in Portland, Oregon USA. I think you're great.
You are definitely getting your workouts in cleaning up those floors! They look so great! You may want to invest in some good ramps so you don't struggle so much. The scaffolding was worth it, I think some ramps would be, too!
Liking this ramp much better... no board to flip up or over. That's using the resources wisely to your advanyage! 👏👏👏 I hope you do find a treasure hidden or buried. That would be magnificent!
When you discovered that this chateau was built on top of an older chateau, well that just took this project to a whole new level for me. That's so cool. Well done in noticing the different styles in the walls, once you said it, it was obvious. Just a thought: would you consider making a peep hole in the wall that faces the stairs, so you can still see the flagstones in the hollow under the staircase? It would be so cool to have a window into a part of that older pre existing structure that became the base of the newer one. I'm loving this journey!!
Hi Dan, Congratulations 🎉🎉 on clearing all the cellars/basement. You have made a phenomenal improvement in such a short time. It was super-amazing to see the light coming in along the corridors. Have your boots got steel toe tips? I don't know the proper name but to protect your feet. Where is your safety head gear as well? And no gloves. You must be health and safety aware, nag, nag but we care about you. Good to see a really protective face mask. Make sure someone is with you if you explore potentially dodgy places as well. I think you will become a millionaire and no one deserves this more. Go Dan! Xxx🤗👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟
Lord, please air up or replace that wheel barrow tire.😄 It will make your work so much easier, my friend. I'm absolutely loving seeing this place come together bit by bit. Keep truckin, it's coming along great so far!
The basement looks wonderful...those floors!! Perhaps your Chateau was built upon the structure of a former building. It's going to be super cool to find out! Well done on all fronts Dan! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Oh Dan, this is getting better! I can't wait to see what you unearth down in the depths! Just be careful you don't take something out and have the whole thing come down on top of you! Where are your gloves?
Thanks for taking us down into the dungeon(s) ! Great camerawork 🎥. Relocating the camera that often takes a lot of time.. Thank you for sharing Dan! Brigitte 🌷
So much more done today so well done Dan. Its exciting finding those hidded spaces, it will all make sense as you progress maybe hidden tunnel entrances leading off from cellar. What would we do without our first cup of coffee in the morning. 💕🇦🇺
Well done..... The basement level complete!!! Wow!!!! And a good start on what is left of the main floor. You are on a roll!!! At Easter time, the Chateau is coming back to life... Who would have thought??? Happy Easter!
Wow Dan, that's a crazy amount of work each time you go there. Its so exciting to see each of the rooms get cleared, but even more exciting to see the Chateau's secrets. Thanks for bringing us along 😊
It does make such a difference now you have cleared those floors! It must help you feel so much more positive (you are positive anyway we can see, but even more) as you can now see the wood for the trees. I really hope you find something fantastic in that gap! You are right though about us not approving of you going under there on your own! But I think I would have done the same! Just make sure someone else is around when you dig it all out, for safeties' sake. Thank you for this video, taking us on your life's journey with you. xxx
Don’t know full story how you so optimistic to work alone on this mammoth project how many years and energy gone take to finish.Wishing you the best very brave man … granny from Canada you example of human perseverance all the luck to you brave men
WoW! What progress on the clearing out! You are amazing. I too felt your excitement in finding unique spaces you hadn't seen before. Treasure hunting with architecture. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant job Dan! 👏👏 👏 Just one thing Ive been thinking about but which you probably do. I hope you always tell someone where you are and when you expect to be back just because you are always alone there.
Imagine if Dan had a utility van (or as the Brits call it a caravan) rather than yet another junker car. Could hold all his tools. The EcoFlow permanently installed and secure. A fridge. Small water tank. Portable toilet. A single bed. Large roof rack. A toe hitch with a small trailer. Wonder if that would be a good investment? Guess it's just me.
Many chateau are built on pre-existing ruins. It makes sense there’s loads of old moats or caverns underneath them. It’s France, so wine cellars/cold cellars/root cellars all underground.
I'm just cathcing up on videos so don't mind my 4 months later comment: This video was fun to watch the inspection on the empty space. I could never do it because I'm a scaredy cat, but I'm glad you went down to check it out. The mom in me was thinking though, "I hope he at least texted Amuary and said,' i'm going down a hole, if I don't text in 30 minutes I need help'" Haha
I wonder if you have tunnels from the chateaux to elsewhere in your land? I wonder if there's blueprints or if there's a local archaeologist that could do scan the ground for you.
The archeologist in you is driving you forward, looking for all treasures, so exciting, I used to volunteer for an archeology dig so I know what you mean, looking for treasures. Loving it!!!! Such hard work for you but you are driven by your passion.
Just a square space under the stairs less debris when the camera went in the space. Wow👌all of that cleanup has make a huge difference !! Well done it looks so much better. I am looking forward to you rebuilding. So thrilled you have help coming!!!😊❤
I don't know if you noticed, but that block you put down for your ramp was part of the arch of the door right above your head as you come out of the basement. 😊
