I skipped through the video and only watched parts but my literal thought process is I've never seen an African Auntie look so sad in all my life. Usually the ones I know are so full of life.

I know, it's so awful. Janet is super depressed and unable to talk or show love to her daughter. Her short hushed speech is heartbreaking. They haven't even mentioned the family photos showing 2 additional children. What happened to the family? It's good to clear the clutter but she needs real therapy to deal with her trauma but in her Nigerian language so she's comfortable to speak. It's all so impossible and devastating.

@@lemon1657 I almost cried when they first introduced Janet. Her depression is so palpable. I too hope she got some therapy in her language. In the beginning of the video Jasmine said Janet lived there with Vicky and her brother. The brother probably didn’t want to be on camera and the other brother probably moved out.

Teri Looney yes absolutely and we all have a choice as to how we deal with difficulties. We can see them as opportunities to grow better to help others or consume us to be angry and miserable. It's all a choice. Being bitter about things doesn't help anyone and in order to find any happiness you have to let that burning coal go otherwise you'll always be miserable. It's great Jasmine has decided to help others with their hoarding problems so she's used her experience as an opportunity to serve. Fantastic.

I just love that she knows what it's like on a personal level and it shows and helps how she deals with others less judgment. Unlike others that might try to deal with situations like this

I think the hoarding, the suitcases were meant originally to take all that stuff back to her country were they have nothing. She finally realize she will never go back.

Her hypothetical kids would likely have had her shoved in an old folks home where she'd have hated it. A person's value isn't measure by their marital and reproductive status.

Both of my grandmother's were taken care of by my family for YEARS until they passed away,by their CHILDREN and grandchildren. I know many families who care for their old ones AT HOME,within their family home where they're loved and are happiest until they pass, and are missed. And an uncle who died of cancer,was cared for at home too,so NO Mr.Negativity, you kinda triggered my family loyalty button here.😤😠👿😡 Th ones who do dump the old ones off,SHAME on them if they have th means to care for them and choose NOT to do th right thing. It's not convenient at all, NO WAY! But so what,my family managed our old folks even when they became completely bedridden,my one Gramy even had a stomach tube at th end!!

Oh, she may have never loved another man but she has a heart of gold. She is so full of love - there is such a gentleness about her she could be an awesome foster grandma to any child! Such a dear... I hope she is still doing great and has found away to clear out all that stuff to the point where she could go sit at that table her dad used to make her sit at and do homework. :) Such sweet memories deserve space!

She has a BIG home in one of the nicest seaside towns in all of Great Britain, while the majority of her fellow, elderly, native Brits lives in a tiny, dreary flat in rundown areas of London. If she had truly wanted to be married and have a whooping 7 children, then rest assured she would have gotten married and done precisely that.

Being a single woman in a big beautiful house doesn't make up for the loss of the most important person in your life. You can hoard as much wealth and objects as you want, but it will never take the place of the love of a family.

Absolutely but to treat the depression the space needs to be cleared, help is needed, and also thinking of others happiness will bring you happiness. When we are depressed it's easy to just think of our own happiness and how bad you feel but when you think of others it will help eliminate those kind of feelings. But being cooped up in a hoarded house may be a comfort to the depressed person but it's the opposite that will reverse it.

I think hoarding behaviours start younger. For instance my friend used to collect empty crisp packets she found on the street and hide them under her bed and when she talks about her parents finding out and throwing them away you can tell she's still a bit heartbroken. I think it is the traumas that push it into the extreme levels required for diagnosis though.

She's foreign shes African she probably misses her home misses her culture her own people lot's of time emigrants gets homesick and that makes then very depressed. I had that too. Especially if something else happens in life like maybe her husband left or died who knows. That just makes you fall even deeper. And pills don't always help some pills makes it worse had my own share with that. Worse is getting free psychological help is very hard in London again my own experience GPS would rather prescribe you hundreds of pills. Also mental illness is more common in black woman this is scientifically proven read about it. And for you to say this is awful. She is not pathetic!

It reminds me of a photo from Humans of New York. An old woman lost her soulmate, and before he died he told her to “take the love you have for me and spread it around” Olive is so generous and loving to others but unfortunately cannot show that same love to herself. All the best to her ..

She's not kind or generous if she won't give the neighbors the quality of life they deserve. I can't imagine the smell and the vermin!

SHes a real gem.,, im ashamed to say, she initially irritated me quite a bit because she wouldnt let people get in and clear stuff...but she's a really beautiful soul,.. stubborn, but beautiful!

One of my subscribers is a hoarder, I don’t know how to help her... she sends me packages, she’d sent me 5 or 6 packages full of brand new craft supplies before I ever found out she was a hoarder. I don’t want to accept them anymore but she already knows my mailing address & I don’t want to insult her.. the first few packages were immaculate, you’d have no clue anything was wrong with her. The third last package had random things in it, 30 or so packages of fake money, like the kind kids play with.. as well as SO many children’s stickers & random things but like multiple of the same item, like all the same pack of stickers not different ones. 10 pairs of special nail clippers for trimming long fake nails (no she does not wear fake nails). Then a few months went by & she sent me another package, but this time when I opened it everything in the package was covered with little hairs!! & little white crumbs or specs?!?! 😭😭 I pulled out a few items before I noticed then screamed threw the item in my hand back into the box & kicked the box away 😭 my husband took the box out to shed to go through it & sanitize everything with Lysol & I ended up donating most of it. I’m a bit of an uncontrollable germaphobic & receiving that package really messed with my head. I actually stopped doing fan Mail videos because of it, it made me feel guilty (& nervous!) to accept things from people & I had never been that way in the past. The beads & things were in little resealable bags but even the little bags had “crumbs” & hairs in them 😭 oh so many hairs.. 😩😭 I feel SO guilty just saying all this 😣guilty that I told a few of my close friends, guilty that I accepted anything from the women, guilty I can’t be the friend she wants/needs. I swear I’m not trying to gossip about the poor lady, it’s just the situation had/has me shook .. I don’t understand why she keeps buying stuff? She hasn’t admitted to being a hoarder, I figured it out myself. She posted a few haul videos & I just couldn’t believe it, the background, the state of the house. So I put out some bait in a conversation (casually mentioning my craft room was “a mess”) she bit & I found out she cant get into/access at least one room where she lives. Shes in dept & I just found out she lives in a trailer. HOW CAN SHE SHOP THAT MUCH BUT LIVE IN A TRAILER?!?! She is in such a state but despite that she’s started posting “wish granting” videos!! Where you comment what you want & she sends it to you!! Thank god her channel is so tiny nobody has seen the videos!!! But that only depressed her more 🤦🏼‍♀️😒 I don’t know what to do to help her... all she wants to do is give yet she refuses to help herself.. anytime I reach out or am willing to be a friend she goes WAY overboard, like almost obsessive behaviour towards me. It’s very unsettling. I’m sure most people would have blocked her, but I worry if I did that it might be extremely harmful to her mental health. @@MissEddieBlueKawaiiKrafts That's such a rough situation you're in. Don't feel guilty, that would freak anyone out. The person sounds like they need mental help. Maybe you could make mental awareness and mental health videos? You could give advice on keeping your hobbies organized and how to budget, not go overboard, maybe do a craft room tour, etc.

@@povyi9394 Are you planning on doing something about it as her mom? I hated it when my mom threw my things out without my permission when I was a kid. She would, however, only throw out (or give away) stuff I didn't use and had forgotten - it would be months later that I would figure out it was gone. However, as I have become older I understod why she did it and I'm really grateful for it.

If a 9 year old daughter is a hoarder, I would blame the parents. Teach your kids that materialism isn't _that_ important.

Yes...it really hits you hard, doesn't it? Thank goodness that there are nations willing to shelter these people, who are terrified and fearing for their lives. They have no home to go back to anymore. It's gotta be so scary, living in a country where you don't even have a good command of the native language, all to provide your children the safety and prosperity you never had.

when you can't get to what has hurt you... betrayed you. For some reason you hurt the ppl who are around. She's so torn and broken and she is making her daughter pay for her inability to cope. I feel for the woman because my grandmother does this to me and my mother. But my heart goes out to her daughter. Because I've seen my mother's heart ache when her mother is an ass. It's such a difficult and heart wrenching situation. My prayers go out to them all.

I disagree. I understand she's got an illness, but she's trying to keep animals in that awful state, and there's just no excuse for that. It's actually a relief she never married and has no children, because to be forced to grow up in that environment is nothing short of child abuse. That poor cat needs to be removed from her care. Not only that, but when the cameras aren't pointed at her she turns extremely nasty, as the help she was offered can attest. I mean, she IS a baby boomer, after all. I'm just hesitant to believe that she's as saintly as she comes off in front of the camera, you know?

Obviously the cat is fine. Olive is not an animal horder. Just things. And the things doesn't bother Toby. He can go outside, and a pile of old news papers is a cosy bed for him. Not for an old lady, but for a cat, it is.

@@slantos2668; I believe that was her mother's way of retaining control. Her disapproval keeps her daughter off balance not knowing whether her actions and responses are met with approval or disapproval which creates floating anxiety. Keeping her daughter unhappy keeps the mother in control.

Her obituary said that she died in 2018 and was 93 years old. I doubt that it's Olive that you're seeing, unless you're imagining things.

My Granny passed away last year at 97, and she was lucid and coherent until her last breath. In fact, despite being in hospice care, she was laughing and joking with us just a few hours before she passed away. I worked in a mall with a lot of older customers. I had many customers in their 80's and 90's who had absolutely no symptoms of dementia, who were very active, went hiking and swimming, went on a couple holidays a year. Meeting so many people like that started to make me feel positively young, and I'm in my 50's. 😁

Olive is more aware of her situation and understands the need to change. She has lived like this for so long,alone. I wish they could move Olive and Janet and Vicki someplace else. Clean.out the house and then teach them how to keep it neat. Vicky has accepted her mother's hoarding. She will need serious help,to cope. Janet has severe mental disorder She has something, much more than. Depression. Janet acts like she is on medication that is making her almost catatonic I wish they could have cleared, Olives bed or made a place downstairs. Was there a follow up. What happened to Olive, Janet and vicki.

The "not looking anyone in the eye" may simply be cultural.

@@billwilson5341 This is true, I live in South Africa and for cultral reasons looking and talking to someone with direct eye contact is considered rude by many especially the elders. I can not speak for other African countries but where I live this does apply.

@@mobutter2879 I noticed her coat was filthy too. They mentioned in the programme that she gets her food from a community centre and she showers somewhere locally too.

Janet's case touched me so deep. I feel so much for her. I cried when she saw Victoria singing. I really hope she gets help from a mental health professional. The one shown here didn't seem qualified to handle the severity of Janet's condition.

I was a huge and genuine smile though. The effect of that will help change at a cellular level for months and even years to come. It takes a bit of processing , when you've been stuck, but that moment really will make a difference for more than just the time of the expression 💓

He was like a little guide for her throughout the whole thing, standing by her, no judgement...just love and companionship.

Yes! They're each others Only. A pets love is unconditional because they could care less about what mood you're in or how you look or how unattractive you might think you look when you're sick or how you are mentally (depressed, sick, etc.) &/or physically. They just want to be with by your side no matter what ❤

Wow, that's great. My mom is a hoarder, she asked me to help her about a year ago.. when I went over one day to get started, she didn't want to start that day, and hasn't asked again... I don't want to be pushy but she's never going to want to "get started". And would never allow me to do it myself! Just be strong, follow through, and I'm sure you'll be happier for it. Cheers.

That's great you've got a friend who is wanting to help you out with it. I guess videos like this must show you the reality of where it will and can end up. I've always been fascinated by these programs I've had addiction problems in my life and it seems like the person hoarding is 100% addicted to hoarding there possessions. I'm glad it's being professionally regognised now a proper disorder so people can get the help they need. Much love to you. X

@Annette Thomas People ask where is the family? Sometimes the family is met with so much resistance that they have to back off and love from a distance to protect their own mental health. You can't help everyone and I would try but I would not subject my kids to this. If we just simply throw their stuff away, y'all are the same people that would say that it's cruel and not good for them. Be realistic people

@Thornback: Easier said than done. Depression will put you into a catatonic state. Moving is impossible. It feels as if you are under anesthesia and for all intents and purposes, you are.

I agree with everything except lonely. She isn't lonely, (well, she might be..) what she has is severe depression. So severe she is quite unresponsive. I was so surprised at how she still had access to her stove and it was clean. That shows she hasn't lost the will to live, but she is so deep in it. I feel so much for her.

This is so true.... Unfortunatly..i couldn't have said it better. And I'm ging through this at the moment... My parent recently passed away and his loss hurts me so much, but it hurts me too, to go through the stuff and throw out all the stuff that he sorted out so precisely and kept in the house. It feels like my mourning process is on hold because of all the decluttering i have to do. It feels like an ungoing process or neverending story..😢

As the wife of a hoarder, I feel that misery every day. My husband refuses to acknowledge that anything is wrong and lashes out when I do something as simple as throwing out mouse riddled cookies stashed in plastic bags in the basement. It’s exhausting, deeply painful and has effectively brought our marriage to an end. I think the heartbreak of those who love and live with someone with hoarding issues is widely unrecognized.

Yes exactly. In the American hoarder shows, they try to do a cleanup in like, 2-7 days. And they offer about a year's worth of hoarder-geared counseling afterward. But, the way they handle it seems to be another big trauma for most of the "clients". In this one, they spent MONTHS helping them, giving them space, being respectful while encouraging.

@@gloria7324: In the American Hoarder series, the clean up is urgent. Either the person is on the brink of homelessness, financial disaster, on the brink of losing their life because of disease caused by the hoard, or on the brink of losing their family or a particular member of the family like a child or husband or wife. In the English Hoarder series, you are dealing with the reason for the intervention -- the hoard itself and the effect it has on the hoarder or the family. There is no urgency here just the concern for the hoarder. Both series on both sides of the Pond are very interesting as well as heartrending.

@@rockstarofredondo no that's not an good idea. If the mom wants back home she should go. But to say her kids to go with her won't work out. They are used to the way they live in the UK. It would be traumatic for them to go back. They would get depressed in Nigeria as their mom got depressed in the UK. I speak from my own experience. My family and I moved from one country to an other when I was 6. My grandmother wants back and us to go with her. Because she thinks if she goes back everything will be as good as 17 years ago. She lives in the memory. I couldn't imagine to live there where I'm from. Starting from the language to overall style of living or to leave all people I know here and start new somewhere I don't want to. So if the mother is so homesick she should go. But her children should have a chance to decide to go with her or not. They still could help her when she moves back eg sending money.

DeathNoteKiraluver they will get upset at you...because the extreme anxiety of letting the item go can be so overbearing. You actually feel physical pain...and you don’t know how to explain it but you feel attacked by your loved one. You feel a betrayal...even though you are coming from a good place to help...it feels like the person is trying to hurt you purposely. Does it sound silly, yes it does. We’re just wired differently, but I’m currently learning to “re-wire” my mind because I don’t want to hoard anymore.

DeathNoteKiraluver indeed it leads to conflict it has some meaning to them even if you can’t understand it, so maybe try and see if you can stop judging them as bad and like Jasmine has done help them do it themselves rather than feeling you need to do it for them

I agree with you, every time I’m being lazy to clean up a little I binge watch these videos and immediately clean my room inside out top to bottom. I’ve gotten rid of 3/4 of my closet and 75% of my room decor. Clutter is painfully annoying to me now

My 93 year old mother, who was still very with it mentally, while being in almost constant pain, died this July. There were so many people who showed her compassion in almost every facet of her life. I try hard to extend that same compassion to others, to the greatest extent I can.

@@Alciato3 if it's organic material, there's no real harm. it will rot down and feed the plants around it, or a lucky critter will find it.

Your doing that isn't getting to the root of the problem, and when they realize what you've done, it will make it worse for them. Get them proper help by speaking with a mental health professional. Hoarding, depression, and addiction are symptoms of deeper underlying issues.

It would be great if these people could accept psychological help, but they are unlikely to unless threatened with loss of a home. I commend you for your efforts, though I know it is unappreciated. You may need to let it go sometime. Best wishes and blessings to you.
